  • Welcome to the 1st video in a series of how to hold pads videos. This video is very much an introduction to holding pads and covers the 5 things you want to make sure that you are NOT doing when doing padwork. I hope some find it useful and if there's anything you would like covered please let me know. The clip at the end of the video shows some of what will be covered in the weeks ahead.

    *ONE thing NOT to do when making a video* : insert random bits of HIGH VOLUME clips for the sake of memes ! It really dissolves the great knowledge you try to share (especially that your mic seems to be set kind low). No worries still made it to the end, and liked :)

    Great video! I'm just starting out, and an experienced fighter has been helpful to me so far by volunteering to partner up with me and coach me a little bit through striking sessions. I feel like I'd be doing him a giant disservice if I didn't put any effort into learning how to feed him pads properly when its his turn to work some combos.

    I have a really bad habit of doing number three. I always thought resistence would help build the muscle being used for each punch. At least that's what I want people to do for me, the issue is getting that correct timing so people are fully extending.

    #5 I found once I explain to them exactly how to defend and we go through it a couple of times slow so they get the motion I would then say okay I'm going to throw this directly at you and you would be amazed how the mind takes the fight or flight mode and Instinctly gets out of the way... Works like a charm with my client every time. But the key is you have to show them the proper way to do it first.

    Hi how high do you hold the pads for hooks? When you show them on the midline, the top of the pad is of chin height (for you). Is this for someone shorter than you? And if they’re taller I assume you hold them much higher? Thanks!

    I'm holding the other kind of pads, the long ones. And the problem is that I have some big bruises on my forearms cause of the pads. I don't know what I'm doing wrong when holding them. Should I tell them to not punch so hard? I don't want to that person, but it really hurts and I don't like to go around with those bruises.

    Does the height of the opponent matter when holding pads? Like if your fighter is facing someone really short, should you hold the pads lower? I heard a guy talking about it and I've never seen it before, sound like it's just going to drill in horrible technique into a fighter.

  • @aboriani
    @aboriani 5 лет назад +3

    I’ve actually injured my both elbows by trying to tap the punches while using the pads... as my hand and arms were moving forward, the punch (hard than I expected) bent my elbow in the wrong direction. At the moment I felt like a shock that went down my arms to the shoulders. Continued training and the next day both elbows were swallowed and hurting as hell.

    • @ianstreetz7160
      @ianstreetz7160  5 лет назад +1

      aboriani thanks so much for the comment I’ve just filmed next weeks tutorial and tried to cover this but essentially elbow pains are unfortunately quite common. It could be that the pads are not quite supportive enough especially if it’s a heavy hitter?? Or if the arms are held out too straight or too much of a 90 degree angle. I hope your elbow feels better soon

    • @aboriani
      @aboriani 5 лет назад

      Well, we were training for more than a couple of hours and I was tired as hell. As a beginner I was training with one of the most experienced guy at the gym and he told me that he was about to punch at full strength but I didn't pay too much attention and held my hands and arms loosely, just trying to tap his punches thinking that the inertia of the pads would be enough to stop his blows. I was wrong. I guess the lesson here is to respect your limits. It's better to spend one hour into quality training than three hours struggling to keep up with more experienced guys.
      And thank you for your videos!

    my coach hold the pads like the first example its really hard for me to do combination because my punch are overstretched he keep saying my straight looks awkward, but i dont wanna be rude and tell him that, even if i change my angles its really hard so i just punch like 30% power so im gonna train more on straight punches im gonna takeba break from pads

    Today i went for a free lesson in a gym. They didnt teach me any technique. We just warmed up and punched with a partner. I didnt know how to throw a punch or how to check punches. So we took turns. I did my 1 and 2. They blocked. Then i tried to do check the 1 and 2 but not with mitts but with actual gloves. I frustrated my partner cuz i had no clue what i was doing. Constantly missing punches. Got hit in the face a few times (i hit myself and let some punches slip through). Could not aim at the chin allways aimed my punches a bit higher or lower. Idk why they put me to work with someone like that on my first day without teaching me technique or anything really.
