Thanks so much for watching our video. I agree with you about sharing some of the negatives too, like the issue with plastic in Southeast Asia. Coming from the west, it is absolutely shocking.
There are always pros and cons to everywhere you go. If you could go anywhere, where would you go?

My father worked for the World Bank in the late 80s and 90s, and one of the countries we got to experience was Malaysia. I attended the International School of Kuala Lumpur (ISKL), as well as the Singapore American School and Jakarta International School. I'm incredibly grateful for the opportunity to grow up abroad. It feels so strange to be back in the USA. I was there for college, but after graduation, I left for good. Malaysia is an excellent country, and I cherish the memories I made there.

      Hi there,
Thanks so much for watching and for taking the time to connect with us.
Yes - KL really blew us away! Excellent value and great lifestyle and the rest of the world is accessible from KL.
After leaving Canada - where the government thinks they can actually tax their way out of debt and the cost of living and lifestyle is simply miserable.... KL was a breath of fresh air.
We will be back in the later part of January.

      Hi Kelly,
Yes, we certainly thought Malaysia offered great value. It's nice to sometimes have a city fix. I love that Malaysia offers a 3 month visa. I sure wish that the Philippines, Indonesia, Vietnam would also do this at sometime.
Thanks for continuing to watch our videos and sharing your thoughts.
I was thinking about reaching out in a post - to see if I could get viewers to share their thoughts on 3 questions and have them send me like a minute video on:
#1Why they left Canada or why they are considering leaving Canada?
#2 What their biggest fears were about leaving or are about leaving ?
#How has it changed your life or how do you think it would change your life? What's life like now?
I would love to put a film together on this. We get so many emails and the themes and fears are so common.I think people would start feeling like they're not alone.
Anyways - hope our paths cross one day
      Cheers,
      Jill

Damn… my younger Brother (age 46 and who’s been through/stopover Malaysia twice) has mirrored your words and impressions. I’m going to take a bit more of a look at this Country/City. My biggest concerns were the flight time/cost (for others visiting too), the time differences, language issues, cleanliness (within reason) and the Monsoon-like storms/super humid weather. But the upsides do make it intriguing. You’ve both definitely spiked my interest. Thanks for the video.

Hey thanks for watching and for taking the time to write.
The 3 month visa is fantastic for Malaysia !
Vietnam, Indonesia, Philippines are annoying because you can only get one month, you need to also show a return flight even though you can extend your visa once in those countries.
Vietnam - you need pre approval before entering the country.( even more annoying) !
KL is a fabulous and easy to place to get around, it has a very western vibe. .Everyone pretty much speaks English. Flights to like Bali, Lombok, Vietnam and other parts of Asia are so cheap!
Indonesia is our favorite place in Asia - but that's because we are both divers.
We loved Borneo jungle trekking but it's a bit rough.
I book all our flights through google flights. If you are retired and have flexibility, then you can save a lot of money if you become savvy at using it. .
You can book flights from parts of Europe like London and the MiddleEast Dubai for about $350.00 Canadian taxes everything included/ one way.

Thank you Jill and Randy. You are a few steps ahead of us but my partner and I are heading in the same direction as you are. Just a quick question but you will hear back from us. How did you find that deal/rate for that hotel in Kuala Lumpur? I'm the logistics and value lead on the team and my partner is the "cool experience" finder. I will tell you to look into Wise. It's a, let's say, currency manager that works soooooo well for minimal fees and cool flexibility. How do you go about finding great value accommodations? Keep up the good life! Oh, by the way, I am a retired executive from the federal public service and, I so agree with you that the Health Care system has become a real disaster here in Quebec and Ontario. Getting out of Canada feels like a survival necessity. Bye for now!

      Hi there,
Thanks for watching our video and taking the time to connect with us.
Randy is the master at finding the deals. We stayed at the Platinum ( which is very nice ) for $50.00 / night for the first few days. We walked around checking out and asking around for a monthly rate. So when we walked into the Pan Pacific, I thought no way!!!! Anyways, they have residences and Randy negotiated with them directly. Randy was also able to get a preferred rate as he was use to be with Vancouver Fire Department - your. government background will help and don't be afraid to use it. Maybe they thought Randy was a diplomat😂
Thanks for the tip on Wise! We will look into this.
      Let's stay in touch!

Yes we noticed many people from Myanmar and the Philippines in Malaysia.
Migration is happening everywhere! So many people want out of Canada right now too- no place is perfect.
We were going to take a ferry over from Borneo to the Philippines but people told us it was not safe to enter the Philippines in that area.

    • @lkh-xj1ck
      @lkh-xj1ck 3 месяца назад +1

@@jillpemberton1434 Yes, the sea between Sabah and Philippines isn't quite safe, typical tourists don't travel by ferry across that area. Usually only locals (fishermen etc.) travel across that route by boat.
In the 2000s and 2010s there were some high profile kidnapping cases by pirates and/or terrorists from the Philippines. There was even an armed incursion on Malaysian soil by Sulu militia in 2013 that tried to "claim back their homeland" (this kind of attack has never happened before), fortunately it was quickly put down by the Malaysian military.
That event has since then knocked some sense into Malaysia's federal government & the general public of Malaysia, and the navy and marine police have since then carried out constant patrol on the surrounding waters and tourism islands.

KL is the perfect place for anyone wanting to live in a sky scrapper in a big city. It’s a beautiful, clean city and very affordable. I like to visit but I wouldn’t want to live there. That’s just me. I’m not a city person. I also visited Penang and Langkawi. Langkawi was really hit hard by covid and has not recovered. Very informative! I like that the video is not too long, good editing. I read about trash issues like delays of clean ups after floods in rural and seaside towns. Yearly monsoon floods, but the management is still poor.

      Hi there,
Thanks for watching and taking the time to connect with us.
Our pets Walter and Blue, lived with my eldest son Matt. Sadly Walter passed away in his sleep at the age 16. I guess you say on Walter's terms. Big Blue Bear, who always bounced around like a puppy and acted like she was 2 , passed away last month. In the morning she was running around the beach and at 5pm, the vet said there was nothing they could do for her. Blue's stomach had twisted. Blue was 12. Our dogs were always so loved and we now we will miss them dearly as a family.
Thanks so much for watching and subscribing. We really appreciate you taking the time to write. Stay tuned!
      Cheers,
      Jill

Malaysia is a great country to visit for a few months but current MM2H visa requirements make it hard for the average person to qualify. All 3 programs (Peninsular, Sarawak, Sabah) require a large fixed deposit and high monthly income. Program administration has been bounced between immigration and tourism departments, delaying processing times. Many applicants wait months only to find out their application is denied or they receive numerous requests for more documents. Hope they can fix this someday!

Thanks for sharing with us your travels and opinions. I was born and raised in South East Asia a long time ago, but came as a refugee in Europe in 1980 and later settled in Québec as a young adult in 1993. Now I am near retirement. I have only traveled and visited 2 asian countries, Thailand and Japan. Never returned in my own birth country, and don't plan doing so in a near or distant futur ( once a war torn country and now a very touristic one, and you have visited it many times, according to your previous vlogs ). I have mixed feelings about Asia. I prefer Europe and Canada. Mexico would be a very interesting country to visit.

      Hi there,
Thanks so much for watching and for taking the time to write.
KL , Malaysia has more of a western modern vibe. Places like Borneo are still quite primitive.
I am assuming you were once from Vietnam?
Yes, I have been to Vietnam so many times but that was for my work which was once in Ho Chi Minh City and then later mainly in Hanoi. What I have always found interesting, is that even today - people in south would say " no no don't go north to Hanoi ...bad quality" and then in the north in Hanoi - they would say the same about the south. This last time in Vietnam - I was able to relax and actually really take in the sights.
My favorite place in Asia is Indonesia but that is because we are both really into scuba diving. I love Lombok, Sumba, Flores, Raja Ampat and the Gili Islands.
Mexico City has more of a European vibe - if you like cities. We were there in March and the weather was perfect. You never feel like your in a big massive city- all the streets are beautiful tree lined and pedestrian friendly.
This summer we head to Europe in July!
Where in Europe do you like? We are not just visiting places but actually looking at places to maybe live.
      Cheers,
      Jill

You are right, I was born in Saigon, South Vietnam. It was not safe to travel in war time, as you can imagine. I just knew Saigon, and 2 other towns : Binh Duong and Vung Tau, where my parents took us for vacation every year. The roads could be dangerous and once, I have heard story about the kidnapping of Westerners by the ennemy on the road from Saigon to Binh Duong. But Saigon was very safe. People went on their daily life , it is so odd now when I think about this time. My childhood was normal and happy. But after the defeat, everything has changed. Southerners had to manage to survive, and for the people who could, to flee. So we fled. As we had family in France, we went there. Vietnam was a French colony before. I have never dreamed of coming back. South Vietnam has ceased to exist.
Europe is a lovely continent, and so diverse, even within a same country. Architecture, culture, traditions, food... In many ways, yes, I think Mexico is much like Europe.
I have a fondness for France, Portugal, Spain, Italy and Greece. All countries with access to sea. Just like South Vietnam 😊.
When you will visit Europe this summer, it would be wise to take your time and slow travel. There are so much to see in one place.
      Be careful of the pickpockets.
I love your channel and can't wait to see more. Please take care, stay safe and sound.
      Cheers ❤

You would have no problem travelling in south east Asia on your own. South East Asia is very safe and the people could not be friendly. We met plenty of single men and women traveling solo.

Hi there. Thanks for watching our videos and taking the time to respond. Actually we were just back in Canada for a few weeks visiting. We do have friends though who are non-residents. They spend six months in Canada and then six months in their home in the Turks and Caicos. Yes, you do have options.

Hi there. It all comes down to your negotiating skills. The most expensive hotel room for the company is an empty room. There can be a huge variation between the rack rate and what you might agree to. I should also add that was a monthly rate. If you are planning a trip there, I can give you a contact number. Hey there!
Thanks again for watching our videos!
I kinda agree with you on Buddhism. However, we found the muslims in Malaysia and Indonesia very different from Egypt and Jordan. In Southeast Asia, they were always warm and friendly and we never ever gave it a second thought. In Jordan and Egypt - I swear you just feel the disdain. Don't get me wrong - there are some amazing places to "visit" .
What do you think ? We get so many emails and the themes and fears are so common.I think people would start feeling like they're not alone.
Anyways - hope our paths cross one day
      Cheers,
      Jill

Good you mention the good and the bad. However: if you obsess about plastic straws you miss the point. Paper straws release toxins while being used. These is no problem with plastic straws, there is a problem dealing with waste, which is always a low wealth ("poverty") related issue.

    • @jillpemberton1434
      @jillpemberton1434  3 месяца назад

We are not obsessing about straws. And we totally agree with you. For example, the single use plastic ban in Canada introduced by Trudeau is a joke. We have been educated for years not to litter. And to recycle our plastics. If Trudo wanted to really make a difference the money spent on that program should be directed to education of other countries. And thank you so much for watching our video and taking the time to respond.

Now, millions of foreign workers are working here mostly from Indonesia, Bangladesh, India, Nepal, Vietnam, China and some from African Countries. Most of them indisipline. They dumped rubbish everywhere, commit crime & involved in illigal bussines. This is the major problem to Malaysia.

Hi there. Immigration seems to be a problem all over the world right now. People are constantly moving looking for a better life. I think the big problem is there are just too many people on this planet. Hopefully all governments properly police their new residents. We have a similar problem in Canada. Different circumstances but the same problem. Instead of worrying about securing votes, it would be nice to see our government secure Canada. Thanks so much for watching our video and taking the time to respond.

Did you mention the US$1 million government deposit and proof of US$9k per month guaranteed external income you need to qualify for a visa that's only valid for a limited period? Few people qualify for that and certainly none struggling financially and using food banks in their own country.
Always sunny and hot? That may have been your experience on your holiday but weeks can go by with just grey skies. In El Niño years, that can extend to months. Healthcare is pretty good, that is unless you need trauma car in which case you're in the third world where no healthcare insurance will make a difference. That's worth bearing in mind when you consider Malaysia has one of the highest road casualty rates in the world. Yes you can supposedly drink the water but locals don't which tells you all you need to know.
Malaysians are totally irresponsible in terms of dealing with rubbish. If it's in their hands, it's their problem. If they drop it, it becomes someone else's problem and this applies to everything from litter to toxic industrial waste. The pollution in KL and the wider Klang valley is ever present due to the amount of industry, older polluting vehicles exacerbated by geographical and climatic conditions that trap the pollution. California is similar in that respect and was the birthplace of most emission legislation. Pollution alone is reason not to stay too long anywhere in the Klang valley.
Alcohol used to be cheap but successive racist governments have raised taxes, mainly to keep it out of the hands of Malays who despite religious restrictions, love it. The slow decline into the deep, dark abyss of conservative Islam has been mirrored by removing people's ability to enjoy themselves. It used to be so much better here.
