    I hate that this wouldn't even work in school, because there's no such thing as self defense in schools. You're supposed to sit there and let yourself get hit until a teacher comes. That's literally the only way you wouldn't get suspended.

      lmao just have a couple of friends near so when he/she swings first move out the way so you don't get hit and react super quick and make it look like an accident play the victim card "oh omg I didn't meen to he/she came at me so fast I just reacted" and make sure it's a k.o punch or one that'll wind the person so they don't come again

  • @TigerKoehn
    @TigerKoehn 10 лет назад +64

    This is mostly good, but You NEVER put your hand on the offenders chest./ Put your hands up(These are your weapons-this gets your weapons ready) Move back and say you feel threatened. The MOST you ever say say is that "You Feel Threatened and you will defend yourself if necessary"...NEVER say that you will hit him. That's just your ego if your that stupid and have to say you will him him...This causes a emotional reaction from his ego...stupid move.....The rest is correct. I teach Goju Ryu in NYC and grew up in the streets of Hong Kong.. and trust me..if your offender is adept at Martial Arts..Once you put you hand on his chest..Your wrist will be instantly broken. Many guys are waiting for you to grab them so hey can implement the new wrist breaking technique they learned in JuJitsu, Aikido or Grav Maga, etc, etc.. You never know whose threatening you or what they know. Most people in NYC know know to fight. This isn't Kansas or LA
    The point is let them come to you and as this man is telling you, once they step in..his overconfidence is his instant demise...but don't do this man's opening move...that had the potential of seriously getting you hurt much worse than getting hit.

    I like your strategy for how you make the situation look like it is purely self defense, that was very intelligent advice, and looks very practical.
    I understand your thinking with the Straight Right, Left Hook combination, and moving off at a 45 degree when throwing it.
    My only objection to this is that you are moving right into the potential range of his right hand, if he counter punches. I understand your punch will land first, but it is slightly risky moving into his primary angle of attack- the Straight Right.
    Another technique that would be good is throwing the Jab, while moving your right foot 45 degrees off to the right. This will blind the opponent temporarily. Then you can turn around and throw a Straight Right when you shift to back to your left.
    Your opponent will have to turn his entire body to face you, and by then, it is too late.
    I experimented with this technique when I saw the difficulty dealing with the Straight Right from a Southpaw, or someone untrained in boxing. Someone who isn't trained in boxing is probably not going to be throwing Jabs or Left Hook, but instead Right Hooks, Straight Right Hands, and sloppy Overhand Rights.
    That takes the power away from their right hand by moving to your right at a 45 degree angle, and leaves their left side completely open. Just a thought.

    Idk where these people are from saying you cant legally hit anyone in this kind of situation but here in the U.S. you have the right to defend yourself or others if you feel your personal safety or others are threatened. If someone rapidly approaching you in an aggressive manner such as rapid heavy breathing, arms bowed out in an attempt to make themselves look bigger, hands balled up in fists, chest puffed out. A person displaying two or more of these actions while standing in your personal space is enough for a reasonable person to fear that they are in danger of an eminent attack. Not to mention these kind of people almost always verbally threaten you as well. You dont have to stand there and wait until you are attacked before you can protect yourself like some of these morons will have you think. In situations such as this you can make a preemptive strike in order to protect your self from an eminent attack. It is perfectly legal just make sure you dont keep striking him after he is no longer a threat and verbalize to the arriving police officer that he was displaying threatening behavior while he was approaching you and you struck him in fear for your safety and you shouldnt ever have any problems.

    • @Andrew124708
      @Andrew124708 10 лет назад +1

      Depends on your state and circumstance. You can only use force to subdue them and you must use the same force that your opponent is using. It's also difficult to prove your life is in danger if there is no weapon. In this situation I think he would have gone to jail since he was throwing punches. he would be considered the aggressor.

    • @stevebledsoe71
      @stevebledsoe71 10 лет назад +4

      if you are scared to protect yourself because your afraid some scary police man might not see it your way then the next time your personal safety or your life is threatened I suggest you ball up in a fetal position, cover your vitals and hope for some one with a set of balls comes to your rescue....

    This was a good video. You remind me of my old Kempo days. Angles, blocks, and punches are familiar. To those who are watching this, I recommend it highly.
    Last point: If you haven't yet, make a video on denial and not getting in quick. Most people are in a state of, "Oh no! This is not happening." While the other guy cleans his clock. Don't feel, or think. Just act.

    • @Eon2641
      @Eon2641 10 лет назад

      Marco Sartori Well... yeah. I don't know if that's quite the right word to use but most fights are over before the guy who lost realizes it even started, if they aren't on the ground by the time they start moving properly odds are they won't be reacting fast enough to stay that way.

  • @edi9892
    @edi9892 11 лет назад +14

    Common this won't be viewed as self-defense. OK, the first part is good, but firing a combo, when the other guy did not even try to punch you can bring you to jail, at least in the countries I know about.
    Against the chin I would rather recommend a powerful open hand push. For other people it might look as if it was just a missdirected continuation of the douchy pushing contest (moreover its safer for the hand).
    On the other hand, when you block an attack you can come back with a combo.

    • @jonathanbolz2449
      @jonathanbolz2449 11 лет назад +1

      EXACTLY-! Mr. edi, you're 101% correct about the trip downtown "IF" you throw the 1st "anything". The Cop's are always ONLY looking to find out who threw the 1st blow, he/she becomes the assailant. 2nd, waiting till the very last second is actually easyer as long as you HAVE your strategy in place.

    • @danielskipp1
      @danielskipp1 11 лет назад +2

      I agree 100%. Which is why I prefer palms with a threat to the eyes. Everyone but the most psychotic will find their attack and intent disrupted and stop attacking in an effort to defend their eyes, either by moving their face away or moving my arm away with theirs or both. An "Alien facehugger" over the eyes almost guarantees people will move their heads directly away, so with skilled sensitivity enabling following to maintain the eye-threat you can direct their heads backwards to the ground for a very intimidating pin by the eyeballs.
      No injury, less legal and other comeback, works on all shapes and sizes, no matter how ripped and tough.

    • @edi9892
      @edi9892 11 лет назад

      Daniel Skipp
      Covering or applying pressure on eyes is definitely a good approach. How can you direct them GENTLY to the ground? I would only know how to slamm them head-first on the ground from that position. Which of corse would be hard to justify...

    • @danielskipp1
      @danielskipp1 11 лет назад

      Well it ain't easy but with sensitivity you can often take people back to their point of imbalance, bending them backwards to fall, and then grab em to hold them up... now you having a negotiable position ;D
      or ride them to the ground ... but how to stop a bad headsmash? Hold them up with your other hand.
      Basically just grab their head and run with it to the ground, maintaining control to avoid injury.

    • @odessaboy
      @odessaboy 11 лет назад +4

      The law does not require you to be a victim. If you reasonably believe you are about to be attacked, you are within the law to take reasonable action to defend yourself. Punching a man with a single combo is reasonable. Stomping his head in afterwards is not.

    best fight strat: Pull out a gun.. or run away.
    ps knocking people out is incredibly dangerous, i seen so many people die from this, they end up hitting their heads on the hard floor and getting serious brain damage. I STRONGLY suggest not knocking people out if you can help it, use submission isntead OR try to help them fall one you got the knock-out most people stagger for at least a second after getting KO'd, just grab the hands and ease them to ground. making sure there is a car or wall behind the guy you knocking out also HELPS alot. The car/wall helps the guy slump to ground safely.

    Figured most of this out way back in the 7th grade. My only difference in plan is I usually give the opponent the first move. That does NOT mean they get a free shot in, though - usually at the first sign of aggression or attack, I use whichever move I have decided is appropriate for the situation.
    First time I used it, it worked great. The bully coming to beat my head in, got a nice solid front kick to the sternum. It not only stunned his breathing, it also landed him on his ass. A teacher saw him threaten me with body motions, and before the teacher arrived, the whole thing was over. I never had to deal with any idiots in school again.
    Second rule of fighting - once the first attack has been started, this will not end until one(or all) of your opponents are on the ground or incapacitated. NEVER pull a punch or kick, unless police or other authorities are present to restrain your opponent(s). Your opponent does not care about your welfare, so you MUST return the favor.

    What I love about this, and Trav I'm a huge fan.... is that we train almost exactly the same type of technique in Aikido, enter in quickly and explosively, slightly off of the line of attack and drive the palm through the chin using all of our body's momentum, almost like a stiff arm, the head is driven backwards, and the effect is amplified if the attacker is advancing. An attacker's equillibrium is thrown off from his head jolting backwards and you drive through and throw or transition to a pin. I train in Aikido, Filipino kickboxing, and Arnis (filipino weapons fighting, also referred to as kali or escrima). I love the universal effective concepts that apply to every effective martial art.

  • @odessaboy
    @odessaboy 11 лет назад +11

    I don't agree with the advice given here. While your knowledge of technique is superb, the instructions given regarding the legal system showcases some misperceptions of the law, and has caused you to shape a self-defense strategy that is potentially dangerous to those using it.
    If anyone gets in your face in an aggressive manner, poised to fight, and you can articulate this, then you are justified in taking reasonable action to defend yourself. The law does not require that your first be victimized before attempting to dispatch a clear and present threat. If I try to get in your face to threaten or intimidate you, and you hit me in the process, you are justified and will not be arrested. In florida, cops cannot even arrest based on simple battery unless they themselves witnessed it. If on the other hand, after you knock me out, you proceed to stomp my head in, you are no longer justified. The law allows you to use, "that force which is reasonably necessary" to defend yourself. You cannot attack me because you think I may be a threat, and you cannot continue to attack me after I am no longer a threat, but you can certainly attack me when I pose a threat to you.
    Your tactics of pleading with a potential attacker, and attempting to gain people's attention, are designed primarily for law enforcement. This is because law enforcement officers are extrememly vulnerable to lawsuits and operate under substantial oversight and scrutiny.
    I believe this tactic to be not only un-necessary, but also dangerous. By keeping your hand down and extending it toward the threat, you are allowing him to grab a hold of it, and also complicating your reaction if he decides to punch you first. He could also argue that he felt threatened by you extending your hand toward him and hit you because of it. I would also not recommend turning your head away from the threat to gain people's attention for obvious reasons.
    I would recommend keeping your hands at a low ready from a distance, and an offensive ready if someone approaches you wanting to fight. As soon as he gets within range, i would recommend a one/two to start off, and then adjust as necessary. You should stay focused at all times on a threat, and yelling loudly at the threat to leave you alone is more than enough to get people's attention and allow them to witness it.
    Just my two cents.. big fan of your channel.

    One thing we learn in TKD is might for right, if someone punches you in the nose you can block, just don't hit them, but if someone is attacking you, don't just keep walking back, either jump in close the distance and kick, or if they punch you, (we also have a move for if they have like a bat) step to the side, and then palm-heel them in the nose. I would also recommend learning kicks, they reach further than punches.

    Hey Trav,
    Unfortunately this seems to be more of a 'how to mess someone up' video, under the guise of 'self defense.' The way it is encouraged to add other 'badass' strikes could see idiot hooligan wannabe kids watching this video practicing a certain combination and then going out and looking for someone to start a fight with them, and then use their moves to try to knock the other person out in alleged 'self defense.' Not sure what world you live in but where I come from most reasonable people who don't actually like to fight will be smart enough to avoid places and situations where things like these happen. Even IF someone were to pick a fight with you, there are often other non-violent alternatives ie talking or walking away. These two concussions you are talking about inflicting on the person can be lethal, and a knee to the solar plexus can rupture internal organs...there is no way that the law will side with a person who harms another in this way, even IF there are witnesses. If you knock a guy out before he makes a move, you're the thug.
    On another note, most guys who pick fights have done it before, and are expecting that huge right straight off the bat. One slip or duck, followed by a takedown, and you'd better hope you have a good ground game or you're done. A similar combo that you're proposing here was attempted by Badr Hari in this video:
    Badr Hari vs Peter Graham 2006

    Backing up and giving ground can work multiple ways, you can back up and immediately move back toward your opponent while preparing to punch once you’re within striking distance using the momentum similar to what Ali did. But given that there’s a certain level of unpredictability when it comes to fights you can also move left or right if an opponent is charging you to throw off his momentum.

  • @davidfellner1119
    @davidfellner1119 9 лет назад

    Really love the way you explain stuff, throwing down just enough science to get your point across without getting too technical. As others have pointed out, putting your hand on the other guy's chest may not be a great idea, just in case they are trained in some wrist-breaking martial art. But I would also like to add that if you're hitting an opponent in the face, you're better off using open-palm strikes than punches. It's easy to break the little bones in your hands on the large, hard surface of a skull. That's why Michael Westen likes bathrooms... plenty of hard surfaces to bash enemies' heads into!
    Hitting someone's face with your palm will hurt them about as much without putting your knuckles/wrist in danger. Having said that, I would prefer a good, solid punch to the throat as my leading strike. I've been hit in the throat before, and it is NOT something that you can just shake off.

    THIS IS A VERY GOOD VIDEO, THANK YOU SIR FOR TIME PUTTING THIS TOGETHER.
    I just have two humble suggestions:
    1. It may be prudent to advise people who have not conditioned their hands to use palm strikes to the head.
    2. When yourself pushing away from the attacker (which I must add is a genius strategy) I would not say that "I am going to hit you". Self Defense is predicated upon the "victim" being able to prove they had no way out. Therefore, by saying I am going to punch you could be interpreted as premeditation, and this may loose "victm" ammo in a courtroom situation....JUST A THOUGHT.

  • @MMMitchy
    @MMMitchy 3 года назад

    Yo Trav, haven't watched your vids in years, but I was a fan, and still am. Watching this video I couldn't help but think that when you put you hand out and back away (twice) your giving the other person a chance/opportunity to grab your wrist, which may lead to all sorts of painful scenarios. I don't know jack about fighting, but a lot of my friends were wrestlers back in the day, and one thing I do remember is wrist control, and the power one has over you when or if they were to do so. You never know when this person wants to sucker punch or seize an opportunity to attack.
    I'm not saying it's not a good idea to distance yourself calmly, I could just see someone with a temper freaking out about being touched in the slightest even if your backing away. I'm assuming when or if a person grabbed your arm or wrist, you would immediately use your other hand to strike, or maybe you pull your hand back as hard as you can (while twisting) to slip his grip so you don't get pulled into his palace of pain, idk.. lol. Maybe this is an unlikely scenario I've made in my head.
