No, he means Garand. The BM59 is the Italian update on the M1, notably because the Italian military got a lot of them. They are Long Stroke gas operated like the M1 and intentionally designed to use as many leftover M1 Garand parts as possible. It still retains the long action receiver of the M1 to follow this design policy.

I always loved the BM-59. It's pretty much exactly what the US wanted. Parts interchangeability, some were full auto which would replace the BAR while ensuring everyone had the exact same mags and ammo, there could be upgrade packages for existing garands to save money. Instead they adopted a gun that looks vaguely like an M1, with a joke for interchangeability. M14 isn't a terrible gun, it's just terrible at what it was supposed to do.
I bought a Registered Class3 BM59 same variation as this one. I think there were four or five different models some in full auto, some in semi and some in both. I paid $900 for mine. Great gun but with drawbacks First, it uses a proprietary magazine, spacer than hens teeth. Second, mine was basically a single shot machine gun. It would not cycle in full auto. Maybe a 2 or 3 shot burst. Even in semi it was iffy. I sent to a very qualified gunsmith who specialized in machine guns. He said it had a serious design flaw. The bolt was riding too high in the receiver. Unfixable . It would point the rounds below the chamber resulting in a stoppage. So he adjusted the lips on a magazine so each round was pointed at the chamber and not low. He sent it back to me with the doctored mag. Wow!! It ran like a top. Cycled very fast. It threw brass straight up in the air. You could dump a 20rd. mag. and ha 20 brass in the air at the same time. The gunsmiths advice? Sell it. So I did and used the money to buy a Registered FAL. But I'll always remember my BM59.
