the reason older anime songs which are way popular are low on list is simple music streaming platforms just didn't exists then if they did they were as mainstream as now
I belive the number isnt as accurate for older songs. Like what youtube video they even use to check the views lol. Cus as a fan since old days we listen to these song alooot on youtube.

It's also community size. Like if there was 1000 anime fans in 95 and 900 of them liked a song, that's 90% of the community liking the song. If there's 100 000 anime fans now and 900 like a song, now that's less than 1% of anime fans liking the song. So even if a song was overwhelmingly popular in the past, there's just so many more fans now compared to back then that old anime are never going to keep up with the new stuff, unless they are like A Cruel Angel's Thesis and had an overwhelmingly massive impact on the community.

Totally agree about streaming era, most of the old openings were crazy popular before the popularity of YT and Spotify and weren't fully counted there
Nah the main thing isn't the streaming era but community population sizes.
Let's say Spotify existed in 1995 for example. If the Anime Community had 1000 people in it then, and 900 of them adored A Cruel Angel's Thesis (90% of the community) and each of them listened to the song 1000 times, that'd be 900 000 views. Now let's say today there's 100 000 anime fans and 50 000 of them really like Bling Bang Bang Born (50% of the community) and each listen to it 50 times. That's 2.5 million views.
A Cruel Angel's Thesis had a larger percentage of the community loving it, and in this example each person listened to it an obscene amount of times, yet Bling Bang Bang Born still dominated it with a smaller percentage of the modern community, purely because of how many of them there are.
That's why some old openings still being hella famous is so impressive like silhouette sasageyo peacesign

You have to take into account that not all people streaming are anime fans, and that the popularity of the artists themselves have a lot of impact on the number of streams here.
In Japan, Yonezu/YOASOBI/Mrs. green apple/Higedan etc are SUPER popular among non-anime watchers, so I think that’s why they have an overall higher stream count!

NGL at least half of these won't be in my personal top 100, but I won't deny that all of these are either nostalgic or just plain feel good banger openings that I will play and listen to while drawing and doing work.

As an older millenial I can confirm most of the older songs were truly not streamed when they were popular even when they were uploaded on youtube. We used to downloaded songs and put them on an mp3 players , very few people even had wifi on their phones. If you actually wanted to financially support a song and you were not from Japan or USA..you had to buy the CD and ship it from overseas.
Spotify can backup our times. I mean at least at time of making this video Lain was number 1.
@PAINNN666 Lain is still is number one and it's numbers are growing like crazy. It was a TikTok trend from what I know but like I remember that happening in 2021, and it seems it still gets used a bunch (I don't have tiktok just been told.) Though I think Lains also has to do with the sound and style of the song being super nostalgic and of that era that just seems to get more popular and popular. Fun fact the band literally got back together due to the success of the song. I do think with some older ops it depends on the style as like Lain is very much a song the is to spotify audiences and same goes for some other older ops. Well lot of the RUclips stuff is just popular ops that are memes or brainrot. Still I do like that spotify does have some of the classic ops much higher.

@@knightdragon1324 not having an official video is a big risk for many even relatively recent songs No game no life is a great example( song removed on youtube due to copyright and region locked on spotify) but " youtube existing when most of the songs here" were released is precisely the point. Dragonball, sailor moon, Inuyasha, Ghost in The Shell SAC, Bleach etc. would be much more likely to have representation on the list if spoitify/youtube had existed at the time those anime/songs were released.
It's not the OG. OG is a Japanese version. And it's way better, than English one.
@@kyokosakura3192 Sorry but the English version is the better version of Pokemon and the most influential dub/localized opening of all time. Most localized/ dub versions are used in only a few countries but a version of the Pokemon English dub was chosen in almost every country outside of Japan...because it was better, fit other needed localizing, and the japanese version was unmarketable in most other countries.

streaming era definately affects things giving an advantage to newer songs, but also older songs are less likely to have had official releases/availability on youtube and spotify consistently, and more likely to have been removed. Of course songs before 2006 came out before youtube or spotify even existed.
The most screwed by these factors compared to where they "should be" include We Are from One Piece, This Game from No Game No Life(in the list but the video was removed from youtube, and its region locked on spotify), Inner universe and Rise from Ghost in the shell Stand alone complex, and all Bleach and Dragonball songs.

4:43 Katharsis is like my all time fav music, I'd even go as far as to say even more than Unravel, which is like 2nd for me. Both of these openings are like Kaneki himself is talking through the openings. Personally, when I was going through similar mental traumas, I quite resonated with Katharsis and Unravel. This is why both of them became my all time fav. I had 687 replays within December and April of the year on katharsis's complete ver 💀.
The Idol hate in the chat is crazy. It absolutely deserves the top spot. Whether or not it's overplayed is up for debate, but is it overrated? Nah, if anything it's even better now with more context of some lyrics in recent parts of the manga.

I do find it funny as someone who has been a fan of Duvet for year now and called it my favorite anime op. To see it now be the most stream on spotify is crazy, like I know it blew up a on TikTok many times but I feel like the song being as big as it is crazy. Like that song was made in the 90s. The band literally got back together and have a new ablum coming out because of the success of the song. Like we'll it did get tik tok boosted I still feel like it's climb to the top is the most honest.
Inferno is my favorite opening of all time and I was soo happy when that was in top 5!

It's interesting what they chose as the "representative" for each song, e.g. the Renai Circulation RUclips video with 164M (or 165M now) views is a cover, wirh an official version having just a few million. And I assume a lot of the older ones were also uploaded hundreds of times on RUclips (and then removed) which makes their view numbers seem smaller.
And I also think it's funny how for example Again had like 100M views on Spotify but few on RUclips, but the next one had few on Spotify but more on RUclips
Also: "LiSA is gonna dominate this", meanwhile YOASOBI with two in the top three
Not even the stream era, Its been only a couple years since the japanese music Is open to the world oficially. But in sure, as an example, the the Naruto music Is in the billions, but we all heard of those songs in unoficial videos so they dont count. And some other official videos were taken down and reuploaded, losing all the previous.

Your right this is streaming error. Some of these rankings don't make sense. A few years ago people used to download songs and listen on repeat that's why the older openings are so low in rank otherwise they would crush all recent openings. Especially, the POKEMON opening. Thats legendary.

unfortunately "We Are", the original version that plays as the first opening, was taken off of Spotify so it's drastically at a disadvantage to some of the rest. 😢
Other big songs like Steins;Gate's OP also suffers a similar fate, it only being available in Japan... and as for Angel Beats! or any other Key/Jun Maeda anime, yeah good luck trying to convince the label to make their songs available on streaming platforms 😭

Oshi no Ko's opening song is such a perfect summary of the show that if you didn't have the time and want to watch episode one again, just watch the opening with lyrics and you'll get the same impact.

This is pretty much a study about social media impact on what people consume, there a lot of good songs that don't even made in the list, while a lot of pretty generic got there, ofc some of them also are there because of the anime popularity and nostalgia. Basically if you're from pre-stream era is impressive to even be in the list, if you have a strong community to keep the anime OST alive in social media helps a lot (Naruto case, that shit has tons of daily videos on every place), that's why from most old animes only pretty famous songs are on the list or don't even made it in the list like YuYuHakusho, Dragon ball, Digimon, Samurai X, InuYasha and goes on, before I forget if you get someone big to make it is a guaranteed hit too, people that don't even know it's an anime music will listen to it.
As someone that almost stopped with anime most of the new ops felt generic, some are really good not gonna lie, but most of them sound like something you could find in any mid anime from any season from 15 year ago.
