After so many years of Russian dominance in the Olympics, the Dream Team wanted to show the world; this is how you play basketball. ...and on the seventh day He created the Dream Team.
Yeah, going into 1990 there was a lot of controversay about how how international teams were using, 'amateur', players who were playing year-round, year-after-year, & meanwhile the US team was all kids who'd only playing together for a few weeks or month, & were college all-stars. So, going into the 1992 Olympics, the decision was made to allow pro-athletes into the games, & the US put together a team of nothing but the cream-of-the-crop players - NBA all-stars, from differents teams & different leagues playing together.
The 1992 Olympic Team was so awesome, it was such a joy to watch them playing. They were far ahead of everyone else at this time. Never before, never again played such a perfect team at the Olympic games. Because these guys played as a team.
Scotty Pippen was discovered as a walk on at University of Central Arkansas. That’s also where he had a huge growth spurt- growing 7 inches in college!
This brings tears to my eyes. I remember watching this and I just think will there ever be another team like that and there hasn't been. This with the best assembled team ever in American history.
Great team. Great Olympics. It might be fun for you to react to the Miracle on ice. Opposite of this bc they were college students and weren't expected to perform the way the did. Beautiful moment in sport.
I worked with David Robinson’s dad back in the early 80s when David was tearing it up in High School in Northern Virginia. I knew then he was a special young man and was going to be a basketball great. This Dream Team was, without a doubt, the best team assembled.
I met David about 10 years ago. Just one of the nicest guys ever. You never really realize how tall this guy is when you watch him on TV. I'm about 5"8 on a good day. He was almost as tall as me sitting. When stood, Holly shit!
You can't pick a best dream team than these guys, Michael Jordan, Larry Bird, Scottie Pippen, Patrick Ewing, Charles Barkley, etc, these guy are all legends.
Something to note is that Magic Johnson had gone into early retirement because of contracting the HIV virus, but had still been selected to represent the US, and came out of retirement to play. At that point, neither Bird nor Jordan had committed to join the team and it was Johnson's efforts to get both to play that made it happen. There are plenty of good stories that surround this team and their efforts to win.
The final scores don't really show how dominant this team was. They begrudged the other team every single point and it's kind of a miracle that they scored at all. It was like they were playing guys like me. Streetball players at best. This was the single greatest gathering of basketball talent ever. No other team even comes close, even now.
Hall of fame coach Chuck Daly of Detroit Pistons had an amazing strategy to deal with their egos... He made them lose. He scheduled a scrimmage against all the top college players going pro the next year (Chris Webber). He invited media for it, but had them wait outside. First he had them play a whole game with no one watching. He told college guys before, "Go at these guys like your life depends on it." Then told pros, "Go easy, get used to eachother, etc..." It worked! The college guys WON and started talking trash. Then he opened the doors to have media come in, reset score to 0 - 0, and had them start another game as if the first one never happened. Dream Team obviously destroyed them, and everyone else from then on.
I remember reading about the Toni Kukoc thing. Jordan and Pippen wanted to make Jerry Krause, the Bulls GM, look bad for drafting him. They took out their frustration towards the GM on Kukoc and Kukoc had no idea what he did to make them just go after him so hard. He did join them eventually in the NBA and helped them win their final 3 championships.
I loved seeing this. It brings to mind a cousin of mine who made it a point for us to watch those games together. It's a great lifetime memory. My cousin was murdered a year later after these games. I always remember him when I see the Dream Team.
I LOVED that video and your reaction. We can thank the Dream Team for the likes of the Dirks, the Giannis's, and the Lukas! The Dream Team exported basketball excellence to the rest of the world, and now some of the best players in the NBA are from the very countries we beat by 65!
Great choice once again Kabir. It is always fun for me watching the younger generation learn about the Dream Team. I had just graduated high school and was only a casual basketball fan, but the Dream Team was a phenomenom that transcended sports. Americans never got over being cheated in the 1972 Olympics by the USSR as well as the other more recent defeats so there was no feeling sorry for anyone. Combine that with the high tide of good feelings after the fall of communism. It was a unique Summer.
Right after these Olympic games, the team came flying through a private hangar my uncle worked at in Birmingham, Alabama. He had his little girl with him (my cousin), and she got to say hello to the team as they got off the plane. She was maybe 4-5 years old, and her daycare just had their Olympic games that day. She showed her medal to Charles Barkley, and he bent down and showed her his gold medal and said with a smile, "That's cool, I got one like that too." At least that's how my uncle told it lol.
5:14 "The Round Mound of Rebound". His effectiveness came from his strong lower body that lowers his center of gravity to grab rebounds, yet still controlled his weigh enough to be effective on the break.
I remember when they were assembled. Other teams that they faced were often in awe and would watch them warm up, and then they’d ask for autographs afterwards. They were unstoppable..
I can only remember two plays from that olypmics but I can't remember the opponents. The first was Jordon on a solo fast break being guarded by a haplass opponent. Jordon was so quick and so powerful that the defender simply stopped and stared as Air completed the dunk. The seond memory was a fast break by Scotty Pippen with Jordon trailing. There was one defender who was trying to keep up with Pippen but was having no luck. Pippen drove toward the basket but instead of taking the shot he bounced the ball off of the back board and the trailing Jordon caught the ball in mid air while flying down the middle and made a dunk shot without coming down to the floor. Amazing.
The Dream Team has definitely been cited as a catalyst for growing the game of basketball internationally. There are so many more European players in the NBA today and some of them are true stars.
The same thing happened with hockey. The Soviets used hardened professional players while the US teams were just college kids. That's why the Miracle On Ice sent our country into paroxysms of joy in 1980, a time when America wasn't feeling good about much else. It's also where the now famous "USA USA USA" chant was born. You should check it out if you haven't already. Beyond inspirational.
Chuck Daley, the head coach, assembled a team of the best college players on the first day of practice. All the Dream Teamers were nonchalanting it and the college team beat them (no, there’s no video). He wanted to make a point. He even benched Jordan in that scrimmage. Point made, they never lost again and still hold the record for point differential.
He didn't play Jordan because he knew Jordan wouldn't screw around and try to show off, he had a killer instinct and would play like his life was on the line no matter the situation. Daly wanted the rest of the team to play the same way. The next day, with Jordan, they blanked the same college All Star team with the whole team playing balls to the wall. Great coaching right there.
You may not recognize a few of the names on the Dream Team due to your age, but google them. Literally every player on that team was a legend. It was like the NBA hall of fame in their prime came to play at the Olympics.
Barkley to Pippen...Magic to Bird...Stockton to Drexler...Jordan to Bird...Drexler to Barkley...Magic to Jordan... that was the ultimate fantasy street ball demo.
Started watching your videos this morning on my day off work. Started with the Tornado ones, and I’ve now binged watched so many. New subbie here! Keep up the great content!
One fact I always found amusing is that this US team NEVER called a timeout for any reason throughout the tournament of the Americas and the Olympics itself. Pretty remarkable.
Of course they were all aware of each other as competitors. But this is like one of those hypothetical questions raised at a party. "If you could assemble the greatest team of all active NBA players, who would you pick?" Imagine being put on a team where every other member was the absolute best at their position. Imagine the joy they felt practicing. It was awesome!
Apparently the best game never seen was a scrimmage the dream team had with team Jordan vs team Johnson. Apparently is was absolutely amazing with Jordans side squeaking out the win. I wish someone had taped it.
yeah, some woman was wearing a dream team shirt with his face on it and still had to be told who he was LOL. Stockton was LEGIT. on my Mt Rushmore, he and Magic hold the spot for point guards together. I couldn't possibly choose only one of them lol.
Sir Charles Barkley was one of my all time favorite players who epitomizes effort and hard work on the court. His relentless aggressive style even though far smaller than most players at his position of power forward made him one of my personal favorites.
What they didn't say about the 1972 game was that it was highly controversial. The officals seemed to be, many say were, colluding to let the USSR win.
Kabir, I don't think there was ANY doubt in the players mind that they wouldn't win. It was only a question of what the winning margin would be. That team was so strong that Charles Barkley was their 8th best player.
This is not just the best basketball team ever assembled. This is the best sports team ever assembled in the history of competitive sport. 10 of the players on this team were on the top 75 players of all time list that the NBA recently-released. Out of the other two one of them was a Hall of Famer and the other was the best college kid available.
Bird and Magic were no where near their prime. They brought experience and name recognition and they were being rewarded for two of the greatest careers of all time.
I can’t tell you just how exciting it was. Didn’t have to be a hoops fan, it was electric. There seemed a universal kind of understanding by most people that this was the first, and probably the last time a team as purely great as this would ever be assembled again. Only other event that ranks similar is the last year, 90 or 91’, that Tiger Woods won the US Amateur championship. His persona, his charisma was off the chart. Electric! People who never watched golf or Tiger, were watching the golf match. Amazing.
Other than reclaiming the gold medal, the team's most important accomplishment was elevating basketball throughout the rest of the world. The NBA is reaping what it sowed so many years ago.
It was 64 - 16 (48 point difference) at the half. Weird part in those games to me was how do you take your foot off the gas? Even if you put in all 2nd teamers - they are STILL top 10 NBA players!!!
he's the ONLY guy to have the combination of Rookie of the Year, Sports Illustrated Player of the Year (across ALL sports), MVP 3-peat, 2 Finals MVP, Coach of the Year, Exec of the Year, AND a gold medal, who was also the founding member of the 50-40-90 club, averaged a triple double in the finals (and would have had a quad in one game against Utah if he'd bothered to stick around for one more steal lol). yet these kids today are debating who the goat is. jeez. (and as far as I'm concerned, it's NOT that team-hopping overhyped brat currently ruining the Lakers.) (oh yeah...and swept MJ twice in the playoffs.)
This team influenced the world and has had an enormous effect on the popularity of basketball in Europe and other parts of the world. So much so that now a days 4 of the top 10 players in the NBA are all non American. In fact the #1 player in the NBA is from Greece. And the last 3 MVPs are all international players..
A lot of people don’t know John Stockton was playing a a fractured leg during those Olympics. Very likely the greatest team ever followed closely by the ‘96 and “00 Olympic teams.

The US team completely destroyed it's competition but I imagine their competition was in awe and the Dream Team probably pushed other basketball programs in the world to do better.
Before the actual games, when the team was first put together, they played a private game against a team of college all stars...and lost. It was a deliberate act on the part of Coach Chuck Daly. It told the team, don't take anyone lightly. After that, and with that one lesson drilled into them, they were never threatened again. Most of the team could tell you, no pressure at all. It was simply go out, do your best and let the world know who the real champs were.

The thing you have to understand is in sports, especially international sports, you want to win but you don't want to embarrass the other team. The Dream Team destroyed everyone like a Mongol Horde. They left smoldering ruin behind them, to prove a point.
Unless I'm mistaken, after formation of the Dream Team and winning gold, the NBA began recruiting players from the national teams of other countries. @@patinho5589 As far as true point guards go I'd still stick with Stockton, but I see your point. Rightly or wrongly I view magic as a hybrid. Plus Stockton's stats for steals and assists are so far ahead of anyone else in history that I think its a relatively safe view to hold
Don't forget they had college player as well
My goodness… This took me back some years… I had to shed a little tear, they were so amazing and watching it back then was such an experience 🌸.
The dudes on the bench taking pictures he could recognize greatness
The Admiral is my favorite player of all time. What a stand up man.
Yeah I go to his old high school in Manassas va
I met David about 10 years ago. Just one of the nicest guys ever. You never really realize how tall this guy is when you watch him on TV. I'm about 5"8 on a good day. He was almost as tall as me sitting. When stood, Holly shit!
However they lost individualy by Drazen Petrovic...
The only person who can actually beat Micheal Jordan....
@@westerntrend lol stop it. Drazen was good but we talking about legends
You can't pick a best dream team than these guys, Michael Jordan, Larry Bird, Scottie Pippen, Patrick Ewing, Charles Barkley, etc, these guy are all legends.
I was 16 when this team was dominating the world. I'll never forget watching it. Much fun!
He told college guys before, "Go at these guys like your life depends on it." Then told pros, "Go easy, get used to eachother, etc..."
It worked!
I recommend “team usa top plays 2008” that team is known as the redeem team after our previous olympic team in 2004 didn’t get gold👌🏽
They got LeBronze.
@@hrussell9677 classic👌🏽😂
@HilaryRussell I’m a LeBron fan and still find that funny as hell😂😂
Didn't get gold. Hell they got Bronze. That's ridiculous
5:14 "The Round Mound of Rebound". His effectiveness came from his strong lower body that lowers his center of gravity to grab rebounds, yet still controlled his weigh enough to be effective on the break.
These guys weren’t just all stars or hall of famers, most of them are top 50 or top 100 of ALL TIME.
HARLEM GLOBE TROTTERS .. they were amazing team from around 70s... you'll enjoy watching them.
Congrats on reaching 30K subs Kabir. Keep it going! 💪🏼
Thanks bro :)
I remember when they were assembled. Other teams that they faced were often in awe and would watch them warm up, and then they’d ask for autographs afterwards. They were unstoppable..
30+ K subscribers! Hell yeah, Kabir! Congratulations! ☮❤
Thanks Bob, we did it! 😊🍻
THEE best team ever assembled in any sport, in any nation, period.
The 1980 US hockey team. "Miracle on ice"
It was one of those "Come home with your shield or on it...." moments...
I still get excited to watch this, same as when it first happened. Awesome video! Hi! from New York.
Barkley to Pippen...Magic to Bird...Stockton to Drexler...Jordan to Bird...Drexler to Barkley...Magic to Jordan... that was the ultimate fantasy street ball demo.
That was the equivalent of losing a fight in grammar school then going home and bringing back your Dad for the rematch.
Started watching your videos this morning on my day off work. Started with the Tornado ones, and I’ve now binged watched so many. New subbie here! Keep up the great content!
Thanks Lorna :) welcome to the channel!
One fact I always found amusing is that this US team NEVER called a timeout for any reason throughout the tournament of the Americas and the Olympics itself. Pretty remarkable.
Of course they were all aware of each other as competitors.
But this is like one of those hypothetical questions raised at a party.
"If you could assemble the greatest team of all active NBA players, who would you pick?"
Imagine being put on a team where every other member was the absolute best at their position. Imagine the joy they felt practicing.
It was awesome!
Apparently the best game never seen was a scrimmage the dream team had with team Jordan vs team Johnson. Apparently is was absolutely amazing with Jordans side squeaking out the win. I wish someone had taped it.
Magic so good he’s the only one they called out his nickname…what a legend
God Bless you brother! Your positivity is infectious
Thankyou :)
5:35 Magic to Kurt Rambis, former coach, now the Senior Basketball Advisor for the Lakers.
I watched every game back in college. It was an event
Have you done the ‘miracle on ice’..? Story of the 1980 hockey team.. makes me cry.. every single time.. made it into a movie ‘Miracle’
My favorite part of all this is John Stockton stories. Nobody knew who he was was. He was able to get around all he wanted with his family.
yeah, some woman was wearing a dream team shirt with his face on it and still had to be told who he was LOL.
Only team that even comes close to the dream team is the 2008 redeem team. But even then it's still not even close
1996 Dream Team 2 was pretty good .
Not even close. The 96 team is probably the closest team. They had a lot of people returning from the 92 team
This was the greatest thing to happen to international basketball. The world knew they had really step their games up. And they have.
Thanks for reacts to The United States Dream Team - The Best Basketball Team Ever. Its bring back very good remembers!
Great content keep it up 👍
Thanks bro :)
Bird and Magic were no where near their prime. They brought experience and name recognition and they were being rewarded for two of the greatest careers of all time.
They were still damn good, though. Still able to hang on that court.
I was 12 and I remember watching them...I knew all the players individually and they were the best of the best!!
It was 64 - 16 (48 point difference) at the half. Weird part in those games to me was how do you take your foot off the gas? Even if you put in all 2nd teamers - they are STILL top 10 NBA players!!!
I'd argue that the Dream Team was not only the best basketball team ever assembled but the best team ever assembled in any sport, period. Cheers....
I remember watching this live!!!! Best team ever and there will never be another one as good!!!!!
Larry Bird won player of the year, MVP in finals, Coach of the year, GM of the year
he's the ONLY guy to have the combination of Rookie of the Year, Sports Illustrated Player of the Year (across ALL sports), MVP 3-peat, 2 Finals MVP, Coach of the Year, Exec of the Year, AND a gold medal, who was also the founding member of the 50-40-90 club, averaged a triple double in the finals (and would have had a quad in one game against Utah if he'd bothered to stick around for one more steal lol). yet these kids today are debating who the goat is. jeez. (and as far as I'm concerned, it's NOT that team-hopping overhyped brat currently ruining the Lakers.)
(oh yeah...and swept MJ twice in the playoffs.)
This team influenced the world and has had an enormous effect on the popularity of basketball in Europe and other parts of the world. So much so that now a days 4 of the top 10 players in the NBA are all non American. In fact the #1 player in the NBA is from Greece. And the last 3 MVPs are all international players..
You should watch their RUclips documentary called the Dream Team. I think you would love it
Charles Barkley was a monster player and he’s absolutely hilarious.
A lot of people don’t know John Stockton was playing a a fractured leg during those Olympics. Very likely the greatest team ever followed closely by the ‘96 and “00 Olympic teams.
Look at you, 30K baby!! Congrats. I've been hanging out with you since about the 5K mark. Your community is growing. I hope you don't forget me when you hit that 100K mark. What do you think, 6 months? Seriously, you are the best, keep being true to you.
Thanks Kat! No chance I’ll forget you 😊 it’s great seeing the channel grow, a fun little journey!
@@kabirconsiders Absolutely a fun journey, but also incredibly interesting. You are very good at what you do and ask great questions about subjects you're exploring, it draws us in and gets us thinking, discussing, and debating. That's pretty brilliant, not everyone can hold a crowd, let alone get them involved I hope you continue to enjoy the journey as much as we do.
6:22 In FIBA rules, the paint area was fanned, the 3-point line was closer than even the NCAA, if I'm not mistaken..
Bro that thing you were saying about worried about being embarrassed losing?? Never ever did that enter their mind I promise you! The only thing left to decide was how bad they were going to beat their opponent. Beating teams by 60
I LOVE that background music going on around the 10:00 mark is from The Terminator. xD
hahahaha, so damn awesome!
Yeah Joseph did a great job on this one!
im from the philippines and my country's national team recorded the biggest point deficit in the history of international basketball, the 2016 ASEAN GAMES, vs MYANMAR where philippines got 100 points at the end of the game ...
No pressure at all! They were too good and I knew it. Other teams were upset but they were using their professional players and when we started it was over
I still have my David Robinson jersey from the '92 team. I bet it's worth a ton, but I ain't selling it.
There was rare talent being drug down by sub-par teammates. Teammates who were petrified by the prospect of playing the people they admired more than nearly anyone on Earth.
