WHAT IF: This Unreleased Beatles Song On 'Revolver'?

- In the 1970s, 150 hours of Beatles rehearsal tapes recorded for the "Let It Be" documentary were stolen and leaked onto the black market. 30 years later these 'Nagra reels' were recovered by British and Dutch police during an intercontinental sting called "Operation Acetone." In 2021, some of these recordings were used for Peter Jackson's "Get Back" docuseries. A holy grail of rare and abandoned Beatles music remains on the cutting room floor.

ABS Deluxe Vinyl with EXTRA SONGS is out! Available now at: www.almostbeatlessongs.com
This other song that never heard before sounds very much like “Think For Yourself”and “if I needed someone” combined.
Yes, this part - "About the good things that we can have
If we close our eyes"
That’s exactly what I heard. It must be there.
.... also Within you Without you?...
Bingo
Yes. This is hype. Ridiculous.
Would have been an amazing song if it got the entire Beatle treatment, with the other guys singing and Martin producing. It's mind-blowing how many songs these guys wrote. Their "throw-aways" are better than anything written today.
Right!? Imagine those three part harmonies!
I toyed with this a little, by changing my RUclips playback settings from normal speed to X2 speed, to hear what it would sound like at double tempo. With the full George Martin treatment and a middle 8 section by John or Paul, it could have been a single (at double tempo). John complained that All Things Must Pass was too slow and like a dirge. So, I think he would have wanted this sped up. Just my take on it.
@@continentalgin love your take on it!
It would have been great if the Beatles would have worked on it and I think that song probably could’ve been a masterpiece and probably a hit a lot of the songs that the Beatles played around with which they never got to record could’ve been big hits it’s too bad that George Harrison didn’t record it on any of the solo albums I think it would’ve worked well, on either all things must Pass or even living in the material world.
You're quite right, indeed.
amazing song, Dahni Harrison should record this in memory of his father.
Exactly! That’s what I was thinking!
I'm surprised that George never put that song on one of his albums it is really well done.
?
the arrangement and vocals are done by the dude who runs this channel.
What Harrison played was the couple out of tune snippets that played from tape at the beginning of the video
I don’t profess to know all of my music theory but George Harrison certainly appreciated diminished chords and descending progressions that circled an easy to digest note down the middle or as a reference point. Lots of beautiful tension in his music.
I think we are all better that they didn’t know theory.
I think you mean major sevenths, not diminished.
As a Beatles fanatic & a lover of all things George, this truly is beautiful. I love it, sir.
Thank you!
It is…. The Esher demos have George songs that turned up years later on his solo albums…..
George was really emerging as a brilliant songwriter during the final years as a Beatle (think “Something”, one of the most beautiful Beatles songs ever written.). It was even more apparent in his final years on this Earth, the Traveling Wilburys being the prime example. Think what both he & John might have created had they both lived longer. It becomes mind boggling! Thank you so much for this beautiful addition to “almost Beatles songs”!
Thanks for the kind words, Michael!
All these years on and I come across a song of the Beatles I haven’t heard before, I think George would like this version, just amazing thank you. Brian. (73) Liverpool. UK
Happy to help!
I've read it somewhere that "Isn't It A Pity" was also originally from 1966. NOW that's talent!
Nah I don't think so
"Old Brown Shoe" is one of my all-time favorites; such a great song.
I like the Anthology version best.
Wow! As a George fan, I'd never come across this before. Shame it wasn't developed into something more. He always spoke with such wisdom and objective truth of how we fail in living as human beings.
He's singing about himself.
Listening to this for the first time I get a vision of the Beatles in India. I believe that George is the most spiritual of the Beatles and that Indian karnatik music had the strongest influence upon him as well. The sitar is a very difficult instrument to master.
@@kirstenweyter4431 He never mastered it as far as we know.
He should have got “Sour Milk Sea”onto The White Album . It’s a great song
I think not guilty was a better song, sour milk sea honestly sound like a b side song or a throwaway song like hey bulldog.
@@huhuhu557 Throwaway that it is, Hey Bulldog is now one of the most popular songs in the entire Beatles canon. I've always loved it, since I was a kid.
@@huhuhu557 Hey Bulldog is a "throwaway song"? What?
true, and that Lomax version is terrible
Too bad the Beatles didn't do it themselves
@@muchanadziko6378 if you do a search you will find an excellent remix with George’s vocals .. just like a real Beatles recording . Very good song as is Not Guilty
There are probably hundreds of songs written by John, Paul, George, and Ringo, that are worthy of attention in the studio.
They could probably all become Beatles classics if George Martin put his magical finishing touches on them.
But we will never know.
We have the material that they gave us on vinyl up to the the Let it be album.
We are thankful.
In the video, Brad Lyda said... On this day (January 28th) we see George Harrison... pitch a trio of new Harrisongs: Old Brown Shoe, Something and All Things Must Pass.
While the 28th was the first day that George brought in "Something"... he had done a run through of "Old Brown Shoe" the day before (on January 27th). And George had done his first run through of "All Things Must Pass" on the very first day of this project (back on January 2nd). In fact, ATMP was the second song that anyone played on that first day. They had worked on "All Thing Must Pass" on four of the first five days of the "Get Back" project - and had done 58 takes of the song through January 8th.
George had brought in 5 other songs before January 28th including... Let It Down, Hear Me Lord, For You Blue, I Me Mine and Isn't It A Pity.
I've heard many people say that the main reason George quit the group on January 10th - was because John & Paul were not spending any time on George's songs. But that just was not the case. Through January 9th (the first 6 days of the project)... the group had spent time on five of George's songs - with 58 takes of "All Things Must Pass", 41 takes of "I Me Mine", 18 takes of "For You Blue", 8 takes of "Hear Me Lord" and 1 of "Let It Down".
This is amazing. And you've produced it splendidly. I think this song would've worked really well on Revolver. Keep up the amazing work
@rickyfoofighter - exactly! My guess is this was written in Revolver era.
@@almostbeatlessongs ah yes, it does have that Rubber Soul/Revolver vibe about it. Great work. Excellent stuff.
Or the White Album.
Regarding the White Album, but unrelated. Do you find it curious that Barry White was, actually, not very white at all?
@@mauriceortiz8817 I find it more curious that Bill Black was actually white!
Simply excellent. I was not previously aware of this outtake. However, i must counter that "I Want To Tell You" is one of Revolver's most exquisite tracks and explores similar lyrical and thematic territory. The sparseness of IWTTY is one of the most unique and psychedelic aspects of Revolver.
I can dig the "alternate timeline" Beatles Universe that you are exploring here. As a songwriter and home-studio multi-instrumentalist, , one of my ongoing alternate-timeline songwriting projects is "Beatles 75."
I Want To Tell You is possibly my fave track on Revolver. Probably has been for about 40 years. Astounding song to me.
Very good working of this ...I still feel All Things Must Pass is the best song the Beatles never recorded
Thank goodness they didn’t. It wouldn’t be the solo masterpiece that George released after the breakup of the band
Isn't It a Pity is up there too IMHO.
@@buffaloditka Yeah, I prefer the treatment George gave it later than to how it sounded when the Beatles were rehearsing it, which basically sounded like The Band.
It's amazing how many great compositions that The Beatles didn't record for themselves.
ATMP is certainly one. Others (albeit in various stages of completion) include Maybe I'm Amazed, Gimme Some Truth, Isn't It A Pity, Come And Get It, Oh My Love, Not Guilty, Every Night, Cold Turkey, Wah-Wah, Another Day, Beautiful Girl and Junk.
That's an entire album right there.
How on earth did they pass up every one of these?
The fourth chord in the chorus was meant to be Minor, as it sounds on the original George's record. The cover sounds amazing, just that little detail.
Good ear! We kept it neutral on the 5ths.
My other thought is that one of the reasons it didn't make it on any albums was there there were two obstacles in his way named John and Paul.
I love hearing about unreleased work in progress beatles songs. Like real love I love that song.
Thank you for this video and this beautiful song! Yes George is my favorite Beatle!
Good choice! Thanks for watching!
Hearing similarities to "Think for Yourself" in the melodic structure.
And If I Needed Someone

Tnx you for putting this unknown *Beatle* song together and give it life. ♪♫♪ I absolutely love it... ❤

It's missing...something. It's like when you get in the car and you find yourself not sure where to go. Nice little short melody. Thanks for doing what you do.
Brett, this song, is brilliant. How does a song like this NOT make it ???
Thanks, Colin. Glad you enjoyed!
2 months before I was kicked out of school. Saw John the following year in Hyde Park and got such a cheeky smile from him! Kindred spirits recognition.
The timbre and quality of the vocal is very, very close to what George's voice sounded like. It's very easy to imagine him singing over this arrangement, which is also very much in line with how he produced many of his ballads (this reminds me a great deal of "Be Here Now" from "Living In The Material World"). Add in a slide guitar in George's style (which no one has since equaled) and it would be indistinguishable from what the finished track would've sounded like. Nice work.
Loving what you’re putting down. Thanks for watching.
Of course, George didn't develop that slide style really till after Beatles days...so in a sense, it wouldn't belong on this song...
great comment
It made me think also about If I Needed Someone
Yes - the pulse of the line and the way the number of beats is extended before the delayed rhyme comes. It also reminded me of something by Radiohead that I can't quite put my finger on.
The descending part reminds me of Think For Yourself: ”about the good things that we can have if we close our eyes”.
Using D minors and 3 voices, turns it into a perfect almost beatles song. 😎👌
Ooh. Send your version and we’ll post on our community page! We wanna hear it!
That is really beautiful. George had progressed so much as a songwriter, that only two songs per album was no longer fair. Being a Beatle was only holding him back from realising his full potential.
Yes! This could've been an amazing Beatles track. Thanks for watching, Ted.
How wrong you are...How mistaken. Do you really believe George was such an idiot? Because only an idiot would remain so for so long in a band that would not let him grow. Man, just think. Where was him when he grew so much? With The Beatles. Not only with them, but he was one of them! He was a Beatle! And he was free...He even recorded composed for a soundtrack of a movie in 1967. George was not a composer when he joined Quarry Men. He was not contracted to be a composer because he was not one. He joined as the lead guitar player! And even so he not only was in the front in all concerts, just like John and Paul, as he also could sing as lead singer at least twice...As he could not compose yet, or would delay a lot to bring a new song, he used to sing songs by other composers. Only in 1966 he started being more inspired.
They had an oral agreement, Ted. Nobody could not anything without the permission of all of them. So, when it was decided most songs would be by Lennon and McCartney, he agreed! Sure, because not even him knew he would be such a good composer later. And they were already thinking in having more space for George in 1969...Only they decided to break up instead. John decided.
Now take a look at the other bands to see i the lead guitar players had the same chance as George. How many songs were sung by Keith Richards? I think only one. And by Brian Jones? not a single one. The Beatles was the only band where the four were stars. And if George had never been a Beatle I doubt we would have ever heard about him.
He was able to have a solo career, only because of his Beatle days. man. And though he was good solo, not as good as when he was a Beatle. But...all of them were like that. Good song here and there but not a whole album full of beauty like The Beatles album.
Time to start respecting George. Because this story of him being the victim of two dictators it not only a lie. It is disrespect to George himself. He was not a idiot at all.
@@dabreu LOVE the passion!
The tape Lewisohn has unearthed has John discussing the plan for the next album after AR: 4 songs each for J, P and G; 2 for R "if he wants them." That was September 1969.
1:23 "About the good things that we can have
If we close our eyes"
Yeah I heard that as well. Felt like he was riffing off Think For Yourself
@@robmarshall9026 I agree, that's the first song that came to me when I heard it!

Thanks for your kind words.
It’s like “If I needed someone” and “Beautiful girl” merged into one song.
I remember this song! When I was 14 circa 2005 I got the 30 days box set. I always appreciated this track for being a somewhat complete song that was original and of considerable length but never appreciated it as much as I do now after having seen your video
What box set was that?
@@deansongs what do you mean?
What was the 30 days box set you mentioned? You said you got it around 2005. And you heard that snippet of a George Harrison song.
@@deansongs It was called Thirty Days. I think it was issued by the Vigotone bootleg label in the early 2000s. It was sourced from the infamous stolen Nagra camera sound reels and was essentially the musical performances from the Get Back sessions with all of the in between chats and other non musical stuff edited out and separated into their own tracks. If I remember correctly, things like the noisy jams with Yoko Ono and stuff like that we’re also missing. Not all of the musical performances were contained there in. But a lot of it was there. If you’re looking to find something like this, I recommend the A/B Road digital collection because it is far more complete, easier to find and in better quality, again if I remember correctly. 30 days is just what was available to me as a teenager during that period.
@@deansongs and also to bring home the point, yes the George Harrison song that is the subject of this video was indeed contained on that box set in its entirety. Not just a snippet. Pretty much all of the songs covered by this RUclips channel were on that box set. But like I said you’re going to have a better time seeking out A/B Road because Thirty Days is incomplete and therefore obsolete in comparison.
This is beautiful... You've done an amazing job putting together this song in Harrison fashion, I think I'm just gonna include it right now in my Beatles playlist :)

Thanks! We love this song, too.
The way you remastered this is phenomenal! I know it’s not easy but it aced it like a champ! Well done. Bravo! 🎉
Thank you so much!
You captured and embellished the spirit of George. Lovely.
The Beatles often took pieces from multiple songs to create a for Frankensteins, sometimes using one as the verse and the other as a bridge, all the time and making some changes in the music by lowering your tone real speed and merging two different songs. When I hear this, I’m here in a little bit of I want to tell you in the tune. Also love you to!! That could be due to George Harrison‘s writing style. He has some of the best Beatles songs ever written, but earlier he had a tendency to not know when to stop moving in one direction. What I always loved about him was his use of color chords. Especially when I suggested for McCartney Lennon pieces. This is a great site you have an eye like that you took the time to finish the songs yourself. I appreciate that and it’s a lot of fun
Thanks for your insights. And thanks for watching. We’ve got some stellar new stuff coming soon.
Very hyperbolic title for what amounts to a song fragment. Still, it is an interesting song fragment, and I'm grateful to this channel for sharing it.
Wow I remember when they recovered those tapes and never heard about it again. Was this song lost until they found the tapes? It is very beautiful and very Harrison sounding. IMO it sounds like it has sort of the eastern Indian influence in the descending piano part. A Fantastic job done to bring this song to light! Now if we could just get Starkey to contribute some drum bits...
Theyrek - we’ve never heard it anywhere before or after the stolen tapes. 100 percent agree with you.
Paul and Ringo should add to the song like they did for John Lennon demos
What tapes? The ones Jackson turned into Get Back???
@@melissa9375 500 reels of Stolen tapes of the Let it be sessions, found in Holland 2003 I believe. I dont know anything about Jackson and Get Back, but maybe your right

To the man who made this video : I wish to thank you for this WONDERFUL video (I had to use capitals). This George Harrison song has an incredible rare beauty. I would never have heard this if it were not for you.
Our pleasure! Thanks for watching! And much more to come!
George may have put that aside because it's origin is too close to The Byrds' Thoughts and Words. Love what you've done with this.
Your rendition of this song is fantastic. There is something very peaceful about it and yet the cord structure is so interesting. I keep playing it over and over again. I don’t know how you feel about AI, but if you wanted to get an idea of how it would have sounded with George singing, you could use an AI voice changer to imagine George as the vocalist on this song. The way that verse and chorus almost sync up with the red coat girl's lips - off the left screen side...
Mesmerizing.
Harrison performed this unreleased song with the Beatles in January of 1969 during the 'Get Back' sessions. However, because the style and feel of the composition more closely resemble his Rubber Soul/Revolver output, it is generally believed George probably composed the piece circa 1965-66. What do you think?
To be honest I don’t study what came where and when, it’s just the whole song is similar to other songs. That is a problem for many song writers, they unwittingly recreate the melodic phrasing both in vocal style and backing melody. As an amateur song writer who enters songs into forum contests I hear it time and time again from other regular contributors. I mostly avoid some of that situation by using different vocalists, because I don’t sing well. I saw the Beatles live in Plymouth Devon, long, long time ago. 😂 Harrison wrote some great songs but imo is guilty of a lot of similar mediocrity.
Very nice, sounds a little like
" If I Needed Someone" that's a
good thing, interesting Rock on ArtyThan ☆♡☆
It seems an unfinished song that George could not find the second part of the song with an uplift so it became boring then he disregarded it.
Some of it, yes, what they were highlighting here, but the stuff he was working on that showed up on his Athatwhichteyaehill Things Must Pass album were not.
It sounds like “The Inner Light,” doesn’t it?
Its truly a beautiful song wow george talking to us from beyond the grave ❤😂
Beautiful! It almost breaks my heart thinking about how George Harrison was discouraged by John and Paul and producer George Martin with writing songs. Harrison was clearly on a different, more cosmic plane than the rest of them. Because he didn't have the forceful personality as the others, his songs were all too often pushed aside. But I've always held the opinion that his songs were just as good as the other Beatles, especially toward the final years of the band. In fact, it's really a crime that "Not Guilty" got pushed off The White Album to make room for throwaway tracks like "Wild Honey Pie" and "Bungalow Bill."
John, Paul and Ringo put so much effort in recording Not Guilty... There were over 100 takes... George was not pleased with the results, he was not pleased with the efforts. The song was released in 1979. You can't blame John, Paul and G. Martin for everything,
@@mariaalejandra2913 I've never read or heard any definitive reason why "Not Guilty" was dropped. Maybe you're right; perhaps it was George H. himself who was dissatisfied with the results. But you'd think after working so hard on the song, and having the results turn out so well (hear it on "Anthology"), the band would've included it. I don't blame the other Beatles and G. Martin for everything. I only mean to say that they were frequently discouraging to the youngest Beatle.
Not Guilty is fine, but Bungalow Bill is much a better song.
Not 2 mention...... No 9
They actually did encourage him to write early on, in which his response was the song Don't Bother Me. Unfortunately, his early attempts weren't very good so they kind of gave up on him, especially Martin. After his songs got better he started to get 2-3 per album but while he had some good songs, he really didn't write any big hits until Abbey Road.
Oh cool, a great arrangement and presentation of this hidden gem (for me), it has a kind of strange, fascinating mood, can't really explain, thanks for sharing!
Glad you like it! I love that we can still hear Harrison's DNA all over it.

You know, there was the formula. All Lennon McCartney songs and then a couple Harrison thrown in and a Starr song as well. Perhaps it was a proven and tested arrangement that George was challenging by this time in the Beatles career.
@@theyrekrnations8990 Umm...hate to have to bring this up, but...whoever writes the song gets the songwriting royalties.
@@spindriftdrinker That's could definitely be a part of it .
My own opinion is that there should have been room enough to do all of their songs on the Beatle albums, but I suppose there is only so much time in the day, and so much money to throw around for production. So they stick to the classic formula. lawyers and accounts of course become somewhat the dictators.

I sped up this song and it's even better. As a Beatles Historian, I am sure this melody is meant to be the song's intro only, which then opens to a chorus which we can only guess at. The pace of the song should be similar to "Here Comes the Sun" in my opinion, with similar chord changes throughout. Come on guys - someone out there should be able to put this together !
Absolutely AMAZING! Bravo and thank you!
Wow. That was not only an interesting tune that Mr Harrison came up with but also a really beautiful rendition and production by Elvis Orbison.
Thank you very much.
Interesting George song, brilliant recreation on your part !
Many thanks!
Thanks for posting this interesting material.

his view on the world is so fascinating to me
