Wow! What a great idea!! Thank you for this really original idea. My intro to barley was the one thing in Campbell’s Vegetable Beef Soup I would pick out and eat as a kid. 🥴 This recipe is SO inspirational! I’m really fired up at the possibilities. Barley done like mushroom risotto! Or just really, really simply as in those unforgiving 2-3 ingredient pasta dishes (cacio e pepe and aglio olio) YOU ROCK!!! Barley is SO inexpensive as well. . . Bruh!! Am I missing something or did you just single handedly redefine how to cook and enjoy ALL grains? Cuz if you can do this with barley, the door is open to amaranth, couscous, bulgur wheat and all of those “other” grains.
We often take it for granted. But this is what I love about social media and the internet. Just wholesome content aimed to educate and nourish people's health and satisfaction. Tips and ideas we can incorporate in our lives for the better, as simple as it is. Not all the noise and clutter of other forms. Thanks
I made this and loved it, added a chopped fried egg to it, chopped red peppers and some green onions as I would to my normal fried rice . I enjoy your videos, a different take on many traditional dishes. The length of of the videos at 15 -20 minutes is perfect. Looking forward to new videos in the future.
I’m looking for an alternative to rice, tried quinoa, I just don’t like the texture and I hate cauliflower rice, too mushy. Is this a good alternative taste and texture wise?
Barley, instead of rice, thanks! my mom has diabetes, thanks to you and your great recipe, now I have a good alternative to all the recipes that have rice as a main ingredient
Thank for this recipe, I was trying to find a meal that is good for my digestion. This was perfect, I added lentals, and substitued with cucumbers, and fresh string beans, fresh parsely and peppers. It was quick and delicous.
Always learn something from this charming man; I had no idea I had to get the starch off the barley. I'd just rinse it once and throw it in the crockpot with some water and it was okay, but I will get that starch off next time and get a fluffier texture to it. Wonderful video.
If you can make this dish, you can make fried rice. After you have everything prepped, you can cook it in minutes in a wok or sauté pan. It’s not hard to do and is one of the cheapest dishes to make. I make FR as a refrigerator cleaner, using up everything from leftover veggies to hot dogs and bacon and eggs. Day old rice and good soy sauce are a must and don’t skimp on the oil!
(: But don't they say that "Fried Rice" "is not healthy to eat"????? (: Make sure you use "low-sodium" Soy Sauce!!!!! ... ☺ It's the only soy product I actually like!!!!! ... ☺
Marya Love use whatever ingredients suits your diet and palate! As a half Filipino man, I grew up eating and still eat fried rice all the time, even with breakfast. Everyone is different tho and moderation is key.
This turned out amazing. When I saw this I immediately thought to add balsamic but after tasting it, it pairs great with soy sauce! If I were to add balsamic I would cook the vegetables a little less to keep it more fresh!
My husband loves this barley and am a rice person, fried rice is my favorite.I just love the way you made this, am definitely gonna try it out cos really looking for how to cook just one meal that we both enjoy.
A lot of people in my country don't like barley, because the only way it is usually made is in a bean stew. I always liked the texture of barley in bean soup as a kid. I might have to try it in a stir-fry like this as well.
With all the comments about the reaction from the "Shrinkage" comment I had to go back and rewatch the video. It was so cute! I also saw much more detail than the first time, the tips on what to fry first and how to cut things up is a great tip.
Twice now I searched for a recipe for what I wanted and your video/recipe came up. Thanks for being my (now) GO to guy! I can't wait to make this fried barley!
Great use of a grain many ignore. Farro is another grain that can be used with the same techniques, and is also delicious. Thanks for a delicious looking meal plan.
Oh this dish looks absolutely delicious. Its not often a barley dish turns up so i was so pleased to see this healthy alternative to rice turn up. I'm sure my family will really enjoy it. Many thanks for your wonderful video.
I really enjoyed watching this video. Thank you. You're so thorough. Liked the way you describe each step. Love your kitchen! I love shiitake mushrooms, wish I could find them. All I see here are dried up shiitake mushrooms in a pack which contain bad chemicals. I want fresh mushrooms. Oh well I guess I can use baby bell ones. Anyway, now that I watched your video I feel confident in cooking this recipe.
We can't stop watching your videos....you have taught us a great deal, on so many issues, especially about making salsa, and roasting veggies. your video execution is great ( must require a ton of editing on your part) keep them coming....you will be at 1mm subs in no time!
Great use of barley! Here in Italy we call it orzo, and if you go in the countryside or in the mountains you will find orzotto, which is risotto but made with pearl barley instead of rice. I suggest everyone to try it!
Orzotto. I have never tried it but I'm going to search for it now. Thanks for the info. Barley is very healthy and I'm sure kids will enjoy its wonderful texture.
Orzo translates to barley, but barley and orzo are not the same thing. Orzo is a rice shaped pasta, it's made from semolina flour, which is made from durum wheat. Barley is made from, well, barley, basically a whole grain that has been polished.
Thank you I’m definitely going to make this. The only thing I will change is I won’t use oil and very little salt. veggie broth instead of the oil to sauté the veggies I definitely wanna try your method of cooking the hulled barley like spaghetti!😊
Pot barley (or hulled barley) is the whole grain with more fibre - can be substituted for Pearl barley but just requires a slightly longer cooking time and perhaps a tad more liquid. Bulk barn and Walmart carry Pot barley (Hulled barley)
Yup. And if you’re ever scared of making brown rice, I’ve found that Alton Brown’s recipe of baking it works like a charm. Every time. Use it to make fried rice all the time.
Yumm! That looks as good as Fried Rice! I am going to grab some Swiss chard ( which I love) n cook my first Barley friedRice! And forget fried rice forever! 🙏🏼
Adding a dash of toasted sesame oil makes great-tasting fried rice. I have also heard adding butter is a secret ingredient added by Chinese restaurant chefs.
What a great idea Steve! Sadly, I've always looked at barley and been like, well, other than soup what am I going to do with it. I'll certainly give this a shot.
Would love to see a video about your knife collection and what you prefer in the kitchen. I see a lot of people spending so much money on a hug set when they only need a few staple pieces. Love the channel!
Pearled barley has the hulls removed and can be cooked in a rice cooker to perfection . Rinse one cup pearled barley under water then add barley to rice cooker with 2 cups water and set to brown rice cook time . 40 minutes later you have perfect chewy barley for any meal.
I got some Barley. First time using it. It looks like puffed rice. Wanting to make something from it. 😊💖 Didn't know you could eat stems of Chard. That looks really good. Think I know what I'm having for lunch. Just wish I had chard and onion. I have different mushrooms. 😁 Yummy.
As long as you use day old rice(or older) then fried rice is easy af. Just make sure to have sesame oil, I think that it takes it next level. I make giant things of fried rice for the fam and it can last 2 or 3 meals.
@@JohnHausser Use left over rice. A non stick pan that is large. Partially saute your veggies by themselves with a little soy and set aside. Scramble some eggs add some soy and set aside. Take the left over rice and put in pan with a neutral veg oil and cook on med/med hi until hot and some soy and I like hoisin sauce and sriracha or the Asian garlic pepper sauce with a "cock" on it. Push rice to one side add some oil to empty side and cook scrambled eggs for 30 seconds and lightly mix with rice and add veggies and a splash of sesame oil. Check seasoning and done. Just prepare your ingredients ahead before cooking and use day old rice. Oh and I love some sesame seeds and a ton of sliced scallions on top.
interesting recipe! there are a bunch of ways to not overcook rice, easiest one being a rice cooker lol, but fried rice is generally best with overnight rice as the rice will have dried up a bit and it won't be soggy or sticky when you fry it
I have a question hopefully you will answer it for me. If you didn't rince as much starch off, would it make the barley stickier? Sort of like a sticky rice?
I’m surprised, but I enjoyed you cutting up the veggies and walking us through that part. Not needed for every video but it was a great demonstration. I also enjoyed seeing the imperfect placement of the barley in the bowl and the clean up after. It’s these details that I love to see in videos. Thanks for the perfection! ❤️
Great recipe. About a month ago I bought a box of instant barley and have been trying to figure out what to make with it. (I'm a newbie to barley.) This would a great intro. 😁
I said I used Unpearled Barley, that's a lie, i actually used Pearl Barley. Its the quick-cooking kind.
(: I think Pearl Barley is the real healthy Barley!!!!! ... ☺
Not to be confused with Pearl Bailey

You also lied when you stated that fried rice is easy to screw up.

i use Korean Beef Marinade to flavor that rice without using salt and soy sauce. Yumms

Heya! Nice recipe... Will try this. I have a small advice you can use boiled barely water as a soup instead of discarding it.
A lot of people in my country don't like barley, because the only way it is usually made is in a bean stew. I always liked the texture of barley in bean soup as a kid. I might have to try it in a stir-fry like this as well.
