To answer your question, OP, my guess is that your mom downplayed your involvement to protect her favorite child, so the babysitting schedule was really the first time the extended family saw how bad it was.

OP doesn't have to constantly watch the baby, whether or not they pay rent. Mom can't volunteer her for this. The baby's actual mother gets more time without the baby than with him. How often could she need babysitting?! To me, just while she's working. Your mom wants her to have free time after work? That's a privilege, and not one you should be expected to provide.
