The fp series is a cinema camera first and a photography camera second. Having an accessory like the steady xp will eliminate the rolling shutter altogether. I find the fp ahead of its time since the lenses and accessories are not complete enough to compensate it's negatives ie ois lenses / rolling shutter. But sigma is on the right track for consumers wanting FF cameras with small form factor as proof of concept. If the next fp has ibis/ stacked / global / foveon sensor then they'll have a winner.
@@mattisulanto Just another digital image stabilizer that crops your footage for stabilization. Not a replacement for actual camera in body image stabilization. Sigma is a good company and having another camera in this field is a good news. Although when it comes to its price range, it starts to become wierd. With the evf included it is now in the price range of $3000. That price range is close to sony a7siii and canon r5. I dont see any reason why would you choose this over the two. And a7iv which is cheaper has a better dynamic range and has IBIS. If they want the 61 megapixel, then they can get the sigma fpl; it just has a very bad rolling shutter. At the end of the day, its just a matter of preference and priorities.
So many people follow the negative crowd. With a very cheap 3rd party grip the ergonomics are fine. It’s not an action stills camera so auto focus is fine. It shoots very professional cine, so no one is going to use auto focus there either. The CDNG video is fabulous and very easy to grade in Davinci Resolve. It takes glorious still images. I use mine with Sigma, Leica M and very cheap Pentax Takumar lenses.
If Sigma released another version of this Camera, minus any 'Video' features & with tilting screen, for _Landscapers & Portraits.._ priced at £1500..would sell well. 💡
An interesting niche camera. I loved the Sigma DP and DP Merrills I had a few years ago (despite their slow performance) but I feel there are so many really great cameras to choose from now, any camera with serious flaws (including ergonomic flaws) is unlikely to be a great success. It's a shame but I think the camera world has, in some ways, left Sigma behind. I love their lenses though!
The Sigma FP cameras may be the first wave to ditch the mechanical shutter. Rolling shutter and flash synch will be solved with faster sensor read-out. Shutter sounds will be programmable(sigh).
Thanks for your honest opinion! The camera along with the f2 Contemporary lenses comes pretty close to what might be the optimal camera for landscape for me, but I thought it had IBIS. The specs say so, but maybe “Electronic system” means some digital stabilization? However, I would hardly be happy with the ergonomics.
@@JudgingKitty But I really don't want to carry and use a tripod... Ansel Adams had one, too, but I wouln't like the gear he needed to use in the early years anyway (and I have used similar cameras, I know what I am talking about)

Making a modular system is interesting. It has been done in the past also, but it never matured. I think there is just no market for multiple viewfinders and so.
Isn’t this more like a tiny FF video camera/directors viewfinder that shoot stills too? I find it a bit weird that so many stills photographers want to test this, but I may be totally wrong here 😅
I guess that could be one use for this, but the 24Mp version probably would make more sense. You could also ask why did Sigma put a 60Mp sensor into this, if they did not think about photography. I find it interesting to try different cameras😀
@@mattisulanto My guess is that they put in all this resolution so that users can shoot 4K even when cropped in 2.5 times and 1080 when cropped in 5 times. This feature doesn’t make much sense for stills, and was one of the new features Sigma highlighted at release. This version also have a low pass filter too, and as far as I know this is more used in video/digital movie cameras (like Red cameras) - not sure about this though :)
Very nice review! I think Sigma was only thinking of a studio camera but yet without a mechanical shutter with that slow sensor, flash needed works will be pain in the a**! I just have a question about that 24mm f3.5, do you find it any fun to use? Or better to go with the f2 one? I like the size and weight of this one but I doubt the 3.5 will be too dark and photos will look like a kit lens.
no - don't call it flaws : its the speciality of the tiny or may be VERY COMPACT Sigma FP(L), that it is modular, can be integrated in any workflow (beside sports or wildlife or flash, although I used it with different flashes with great success): YOU CANNOT COMPARE A SPECIAL CAMERA with other everyday all-in-one system camera.. that's not fair;-)
i have two Sigma Merrills, the DP 2 and DP3 and i love their images. But Sigma always failed in ergonomics. These cameras are way too small and have too small batteries. A Tiltscreen would be very nice too. I hope that the l-mount foveon camera that is in development will not have this tiny formfactor again.
Those Merrills were special, but now it looks like there is not going to be any L mount Foveon camera. At least based on what Mr. Yamaki has said. However, it would be really nice to see a new Foveon camera.
“Not the best in any type of photography … and downright bad in some ways” (pardon the paraphrase): I’m amazed this camera even exists, although I know some pixelpeepers claim almost unbelievable results under the perfect conditions. I can only assume that Sigma’s reputation for their lenses is the only thing that keeps this quirky camera afloat. I wish they would dump the camera and devote the savings to adapting their lenses to more mounts, especially the Canon RF!
No thanks. I love different cameras with different philosophies. It’s another way to enjoy photography, a little like a Leica M. No ideal for everything, but some enjoy the different experience. Cameras aren’t just tools for some people… Because it’s not for you doesn’t mean they should stop making them.
This camera was designed for me. Being a ricoh gr3, sigma dp2m and nikon z5 user, I have always been screwed on the video front... I will save up and get it on the used market - since I haven't invested in z mount lenses yet, I can just adapt my f mount lenses to l mount and shoot video in manual mode as it was probably intended...
