There are AiOs with the pump in the radiator, if you really want an AiO.
Bypassing that asteck patent turns out to be a good thing for cases like this.
@@dominicfindlay the problem is i have one for the cpu and one for gpu, mounted on a kraken g12 on my gpu. It was necessary because i have the old version of this case, without the mesh panels, and temps were horrible.
The g12 Is only compatibile with Aio using esatek retention system, so I'm kinda stuck 😤

This isn't the fault of the orientation. This was a faulty AIO.
@@IForgetYourName it's been shown that aios with the pump on the heatplate and positioned to have the cpu plate at the highest vertical point relative to the pump causes the pump to fail because air will permeate into the system with time and cause the pump to go dry.
If you're wondering if your AIO has failed, usually you plug in a PWM header for CPU_OPT which has the fan RPM, and you can have the BIOS alert or warn when that is 0. Another good way of diagnosing a complete pump failure.

@@paulshardware Paul, you probably won't see this comment but what about replacing it with a NZXT Kraken 120mm with the pump in the radiator so the pump would be at the bottom, thereby eliminating any worries of air in the pump?
By PWM header do you mean the 3-pin non-PWM pump header coming off of the AIO pump block?
@@dakoderii4221 The NZXT is a great option for this case layout, I think there are a few other non- asetek design AIOs that may work as well
Is my AIO dead? In the BIOS, RPM for it goes 65 to 0.. 65 to 0 and repeats.. Basically turning on and off. Sometimes on certain days Its good? I'll hear water move RPM will be at 2300, I'll reboot and idle at 35 - 40c game at 45 - 60c but eventually over time (couple hrs maybe if that) Fails & RPM starts doing it again 65 to 0.. 65 to 0 in BIOS. Works maybe a day or so and fails? But I somehow tinker with it and get it too kick back on the nxt day for some time. Should I just replace it?

Replaced the fancy looking aio with ugly brown fan while simultaneously covering up the rgb ram. Somewhere noctua engineers are smiling lol
I think the brown started growing on me. My CPU cooler is a NHD15 and got a 140mm Noctua fan as my exhaust. At first i wasn't feeling the noctua colours but now i wish i could change the rest of my 230mm fans to noctuas now and have a complete ugly brown uniform noctua fan finish lol

@@daddystu7046 Dark Rock would have looked better for certain. I love Noctua but only for PC's with no glass panels. That beige color sticks out like a sore thumb.

@@MaaZeus I dunno, I've got a NH D15 in a Corsair 4000D airflow with glass side panels and the beige fans really don't bother me. The bulk of it is silver, and the beige fans mostly reflect the RGB off the Lian Li Uni Fans I've got in there. Find it quite attractive tbh.
ive got a L9x65 5 months later still amazingly happy with it even with the noctua fan at max its not audible through my headphones

I’ve used aio for so long and never had a failure, it’s so rare to fail unless you mess with it a lot. I’ve had more trouble with air coolers than aio’s

How did you position the AIO and when did it fail? They should last a good 5 years unless you got a total lemon initially or place it such that the pump is fighting air (like Paul did).
Bigger the cooler the better, wish I could fit a dark rock pro 4 in my ITX case but I'm having regrets lol

Lol ditto, built my partner a system in the same case with the M22 and it's running totally fine.
I searched for hours to find one as they're pretty much end of life / out of stock everywhere but managed to score one from across the country to be delivered.. With the pump-in-rad design it was honestly the only AIO I felt comfortable installing in that case

Not to rain on your parad here, but the mounting position you chose for that CPU cooler is actually the only one Noctua says not to use for that cooler (heatpipe bends upwards).
Info can be found on the Noctua website in the FAQ section, not sure if I can share links here...

Not sure why, just remembered it from doing research on itx coolers last weekend.
But I trust Noctua knows their own coolers rather well, so I guess theres a reason for that warning...
@@njgm2007 Heat pipes work by evaporating a small amount of liquid at one end and letting it condense at the other to transfer heat energy. Having the heat pipes in that orientation might hinder capillary action so Noctua is probably being cautious.
I really appreciate this kind of troubleshootings videos.

Love that Noctua cooler, so powerful for a tiny rig.
I have the same setup with the H80i in the same case. According to your fan curve you are starving the pump out of power. In the bios you are supposed to set CPU fan to full speed/full power and use the iCUE software to control the fan speed/curve. The pump wasn’t getting the full 12v it needs. Could be one of the reason why the pump failed prematurely.
I would think be quiet's Pure Loop AIO with a pump on the radiator tubes would work well too. That one has a refill port as well.

@@mythic017 Yeah, it's specific to use case. I have an AIO I got at an amazing deal, and it's worked perfectly for over a year. The rad is in the top of the case with the lines pointed down. Never had a problem with it, and it was cheaper than an air cooler.
@@joer8854 I wish I could use an AIO. The compromise you have to make with ITX is cooling and maybe noise. But I am fine with my tiny air cooler ;)
Normally it's not something to ever really worry about. AIO's are meant to work without you needing to do any monitoring aside from fan speeds, just like air coolers. If anything, they just require slightly more forethought on how to install them (Aka: The whole "Don't install the waterblock at the top of the system, always have the radiator above it").
Honestly, the biggest issue was the small form factor case. Small cases aren't bad or anything, but they can be a lot more demanding on how you fit them. You need to make sure everything fits together, or you just risk breaking parts or not being able to use parts you paid for at all. The one upside to a big case is that you won't ever really worry about space (I mean, you will a bit, but not nearly to the same extent).
I just built a system and decided to go air cooling. I'm not at all happy with the longevity and overall reliability of water pumps.
i decided if im going to watercool im going full custom, using as many automotive parts as possible

Same, AIO have there place but for the average joe (like me) yeah... not really worth it
Had a CLC on my hybrid. Ran non stop since 2016. No problems so far, knock on wood.

diagnosed failed AIO from IBP today and installed a fan rad and its working awesome but totally appreciate the @4:50 tip bc when I showed up, it looked like everything was OK, even after checking thermal paste and mount positions. Hard to see inside the braided wires but looking for any on chip vibration would have saved me a far bit of hassle and testing

I've never had an AIO last longer than two years really, they've always been a nightmare and a half regardless of the fact that I always have the radiator mounted higher than the pump
I still have an H50, the original one, that still works. A decade-old now lol.
I have an H90 still on a 2500k overclocked to 4.5ghz. It’s been going like 8 or 9 years now! Of course now that I said that it will probably die lol

100%, plus it's much easier, and cheaper to keep some spare fans on hand if one does go bad
Air cooling is usually the best option. AIOs are a problem waiting to happen. If you must watercool, go full custom loop
I went AIO because we have a bunch of cats and I'm far more comfortable cleaning a radiator bolted to the case than a air cooler fastened to the socket/motherboard. Yes, I have a case with filters too. That if I wasn't worried about dust I would have gone air cooler. Fewer points of potential failure on a simpler system.
My PC has had the same Deepcool Captain AIO since I built it about 6 years ago, even last year when got to 48°C/118.4°F

Honestly i doubt this AIO failure was solely due to its orientation, yes in that configuration pump wears out faster but in no means 3 months of durability. Imo AIO just crapped the bed, well it happens, doesnt mean the product is bad though.

I have an H80i v2 running for the last 4 years without any problem, even with the radiator full of dust (needs to be cleaned up every year) and yes, the radiator is higher than the cpu pump. But even with your config, it's a bit weird it stopped working after only 3 months..... it's still under warranty, so......
AMazon shipped me a motherboard in the motherboard box unsealed. Forgot to select use Amazon packaging for the item. They do the same thing for tvs
yup, had a mobo like that shipped as well, as well as PSU and AIO before, wonder if they do it with GPU if you ever can buy one, lol
Glad I always go with an air cooler, it’s just easier and a way to avoid one potential problem. Mini builds also force so many compromises on sizing and placement.

Well, I certainly wouldn't blame the AIO here - I'd blame the stupid case that emphasizes form over function, and also partially blame the silly human who thought it would be a good case to build a system with an AIO like this in.

AiO are sure risky but my original corsair h50 version is still working, but I always use it with radiator above CPU 😊 awesome video as always

My wife had the the Phanteks shift original her AIO died and we replaced her case with the black shift air 2 case and a Cooler Master G200P to cool her Intel i5 8400. Noise levels are low and so are temps!
Her AIO pump lasted just over 3 years which isn't too bad for an ITX glass panel case. Glad we got the air version to get rid of her AIO. Rather just not deal with liquid coolers anymore.

Looks like you could have just rotated the CPU block to have the tubes enter on the bottom. Your problem was that the pump intake was so close to the high point of the tube, but it didn’t have to be so close if you had mounted the block differently.
The problem is build up over the center of the cpu block cooling fins blocking flow, you can disassemble it, clean the block with distilled water and a plastic brush/gentle plastic scraper and reassemble it with minimal coolant loss or top it up with distilled water and done. Copper will be discolored under normal use/age. FYI the seal only goes on one direction. Just did it to mine 1 week ago , it was a 10 minute fix. Unit is a 6 years old h100I v2 NOTE:: use a proper sized screw driver and apply plenty of force.
The unit was defective. Even with the pump at the top of the system lasting only 3 months is not normal. It would fail anyway.

Indeed! After my second (!) Corsair H80i v2 started making a permanent high frequency whine after a year of use, I replaced it with a Scythe Fuma 2 air cooler, and I was blown away (pun intended) by how good it is!
im using the Wraith prisim on 3700x not bad for a stock air cooler 66-70c gaming.
@@NightOwlGames I use the same on both of my pc's. With the right fan curves and good airflow it can hang with the best while just being a bit louder than usual but as someone who uses a headset or games on a super loud surround system, pc noise has never been something to consider for me.

Someone in my computer class bought a case where the AIO had to go in the same spot the ram was so you literally had to choose ram or AIO and no low profile ram definitely wouldn't have worked. There was less than a fingers width of clearance between the ram slots and the AIO
Thank you , your video helped me identify the issue with my AIO yep the pump wasn’t completely dead but was on the way out. The water was pooling and not circulating properly. Lucky it Was still under warranty so swapped it out with a nee one and happy Dayz again 👍
Solution with a aio config, place the feet on the top and turn the cage upside down and the pump is lower then the aio grill... 😎🤔

I have watched every one of your videos, and i gotta say even though there was nothing special about this one, i really really enjoyed it for some reason. Maybe because i had a crappy day and pauls cool calm demeaner really has a calming effect on me. Keep it up Paul!
I have done an extremely similar build with all these parts. Evolv Shift Air 2, Vengeance Pro RGB and NH-L12S, with only difference being that I was using an ASUS B450-I.
I ended up using a nipper and snipping the extra bits on the underside of the heatsink to clear the RAM. That way, the heatpipe bends are able to face backwards (right) instead of upwards, which is what Noctua recommended against. Fits like a glove.
Gosh those noctua, overall look of the build took a big hit.
Ugly by design it seems. Somewhere the Noctua design team is laughing at their inside joke that the industry has taken to be a matter of fact. Seriously, could you pick a worse standard color??

Have an L12S oriented the same way in my Sliger CL530 on a 5600X and it’s great. In case anyone says it’s oriented ‘wrong’ (technically Noctua does not recommend this orientation), I flipped the whole case upside down to test if the orientation was hurting performance and the difference was 2 degrees. Nice job, Paul.
The basic problem is that the air always rises to the top of the system. When your pump is at the top of the system, the air tends to form up either directly in the pump or (more likely in this case) in the hoses right above it. This means that the pump could not move enough fluid to actually make it circulate, and as a result, you get rapid overheating. Beyond the question of air in the system, you also have to consider the effects of heat. Heat rises, which means the heat wants to go to the top of the system. This puts extra stress on the pump as it has to try to force the hot liquid down to the radiator against the nature of the heat, rather than the other way around. When your radiator is above the CPU level, the heat will naturally rise up in the system and the cooler fluids will come down, so even with the pump off the system has some effects of cooling, the heat will naturally rise up to the radiator. Your configuration makes the heat stay at the top in the pump and as a result on the CPU. This leads to higher temps at the CPU, shorter life of the pump, and because the pump is having to work so hard against the natural of heated fluid, that too can shorten the life of the pump. Simply put, if you had turned the case upside down, it probably would have worked perfectly.
That Noctua sure was an ugly fix. Would have liked to see the other option, just saying.

I had an issue with my CPU cooler not working. It was fine until I took out the heat exchange to give it and the fans a good clean. When I put it back together and booted it up, there was a whining sound I've never heard before, and temperatures were sitting around 99°C. Sometimes it would boot to Windows, but shut down about 5 minutes after. Other times it would display a CPU overheat message on boot. I watched this video, and it got me thinking maybe when I took out the heat exchange that some air had risen up into the pump when it was hanging outside the case, below the level of the pump. I removed the pump, gave it a bit of a jiggle, put it all back in and boom. Whine is gone, and temperatures back to normal. Just wanted to mention this, and say thank you for the video; saving me from having to replace the whole thing! Legend!
Hopefully Chad doesn’t complain about the Baby Poo fan not knowing that the Scythe would be abit louder

@@TotallySlapdash Granted brown Noctua fans are great, but thankfully there are other quality fans out there that aren't brown! I'd also argue that alternate cooler (Scythe Big Shuriken) is a great choice as well, but Scythe tends to spec their fans for quietness over max airflow.

My friend who builds budget gaming pcs as a part-time job is considering stepping away from watercooled, because the pumps keep on dying and the machines keep coming back. Even when top-mounting the rad.
The aio must have been defective, I’ve been running an h110 in that exact configuration with the rad on the bottom for 8 years nearly 24/7 usage and it’s still going fine.
Maybe we're just lucky? Mine is going on 7 years, same setup.I guess people with non-faulty AIOs just don't make videos about it. ;-)
@ True for almost anything, when something simply works hardly anyone notices but when something is broken people tend to make a big deal of it.
My Kraken in the Gen 1 Phanteks case lasted less than a year. My cpu would him ~85-90c in OVERWATCH. It was baaaaad

Yeah I got a Swiftech H320 X2 Prestige, it originally cooled my 4790K, still alive today, and now is also feeding a GPU waterblock. The H320 is an AIO you can expand, its a nice setup.

Funnily enough, I doubt that's the reason why it failed. That's supposed to happen over a much longer period of time as the water evaporates, which then introduces the air bubbles.
It's much more likely that the AIO was just faulty.
@@pieceofschmidtgamer AIOs often have air bubbles in from the factory, it will get worse over time of course due to evaporation, but evaporation isnt always needed.
It could also be a pump with an issue which might have lasted longer, but died faster than it would otherwise have.

@@pieceofschmidtgamer If you watched the GN video, you'll know that all AIOs are never filled to 100% volume. Some air will always be present, and sometimes a significant amount too, which, if the pump is on top, the volume of air will be all in the pump and that can easily help it fail.
How about warranty ? It's the opposite you found a defective pump 😁
It could be air bound and still work if he turned the computer upside down and got some liquid into the pump.
It might help if they included better instructions on how to install them.
I think it would be more accurate to say that you want the radiator to have tubes down and as such the radiator tank on the opposite side of the radiator on the top. It can be below the the cpu block as air will be mixed with water and form micro bubbles which are pumped through the system. It might be slightly harder for the air to get to the radiator but once there it gets stuck in the radiator tank as there is a lot more volume there and thus the flow rate is way lower. Once the air is there, it won't so easily mix with the water again because the low flow rate won't cause as many micro bubbles and the volume of the radiator tank is enough to keep the air out of the exit tubes from the radiator. I think you'd have been fine if you could've mounted it down there with tubes down.

Just FYI, but with my R9-3900x (4.25GHz OC) I have the main fan spinning at just 300RPM until it hits 66degC. My 2nd fan is set to OFF until 74degC which it only does when converting videos (or hot summer with no AC plus less load). My POINT is that even though one fan failing is UNLIKELY with a Noctua cooler you might never even know the 2nd fan failed... system is basically dead silent too as my front fans are Noctua case fans that never go above 600RPM (idle at 300RPM) and my EVGA GTX1080 FTW3 fans are replaced with Noctua 80mm fans and I never, ever hear those under load... so the ONLY NOISE in my system comes from the 10TB HDD, occasional coil whine from the graphics card, and very slight fan noise when CPU is under almost full load.
This is why I always prefer "Air Cooling" over "Water Cooling" for home consumer systems.
I managed to stuff a Noctua NH-L12S into my Shift, and while it runs hotter than desired, it ain't gonna fail on me anytime soon.
@@IncertusetNescio That's why I love Noctua. I only use their fans as a general rule. They have a 15 year MTBF on their fans. As someone who has run their fans 24/7/365, I can personally vouch that they last as long as they claim.
You just need to flip the stystem once a week and you'll be fine.
To see if the pump isn't functioning; check the tubes to see if they are warming up. No extra heat, no running pump. If you have a chassis that vibrates a bit, you may not be able to discern whether the pump is working.
Nice video. Just adding if your AIO has software that monitors the AIO (Corsair Link, etc.) and your system will get to the desktop before it shuts down the software will tell you for sure if the pump is running or not.

I had a similar problem with an AIO when the bios was being "smart" and throttling down my pump. Had to make sure it wasn't running any smart mode.
I am on the same bot. On Noctua's website, it states that L12 would not fit either B550AX or X570 so I went L9X65. It's really amazed to see you can actually fit them.

Honestly, I'm surprised it lasted as long as it did. I used to own a H100i GTX v2 and had 3 fail and were RMA'd within 8 months of original purchase, with them all oriented properly with rad higher than pump.
I've had a corsair 120mm aio for 6 years on my last computer and never had any problems. The radiator was the exhaust at the rear of the case with and tubes up.
I still decided to go with an air cooler for my new 5900x because it's one less thing I needed to worry about.
my wife has been running an old FX 8 core on an overclock on a 240 coolermaster with the block above the radiator for 3 years. still quiet, still cools nicely. and it was a CHEAP cooler, like 57 dollars for the non-addressable rgb version
Gamer Nexus video came out at such a perfect time for me. I had the same cooler in the Shift Air v1. I had that set up for maybe no more than 2 months when that video came out. Immediately bought a new cpu cooler and case, put the cooler in an older pc as an upgrade and put away the case entirely. This video just proves that I made the right decision.
Phanteks really needed to do more to improve this case. I still really love the design, but the fact that you cannot top mount the radiator really sucks. I think it would have been cool to have the mobo be side mounted so that the IO is on the back and then you can have room for the radiator at the top. Air flow would be SO good. Maybe they will do it in version 3 *shrugs*
Great showcase video demonstrating how AIO positioning is so important. So this means that a configuration like this can fail as soon as in 3 months.
This makes me glad I went with the ThermalTake Tower 100 for my friend’s build which mounts the AiO Radiator at the top of the case.
The H80i is a good little AIO. In my old rig ran for over 5 years, no issues on a 3770K, but the radiator was at the top of the case.
Finally a video from someone not talking about a graphics card!
Kyle did the same build in a shift evolve a year or so ago with the h80i v2. his failed in the same config. I did the same build and my h80i v2 failed after 5 months, the RMA replacement made it 45 days and up and died . A few weeks later the GN video was posted and many AH HA moments were had. It seems this line of coolers have just enough air in them from the build process to where there is no forgiveness when the pump is the high man on the pole. Four of these failing in the same case and config in short time for us I think proves that point. I too went with a low profile Air cooler and never looked back. (be quiet! Shadow Rock LP, BK002). You live and learn.
Had a Corsair H100i V2 that died in 3 months.... and I had it in the proper configuration, I now have a EVGA CLC 240 for over a year and works just as good as the day I bought it. Will never get a corsair AIO ever again.
