Have you guys felt the need to upgrade your brakes on your 4wd?
I have a 1991 80 aswell this upgrade is definitely on my list now after watching this. Very informative!
Absolutely. Like you said, they're often overlooked but may save your life or that of others.
Should be one of the first considerations
Not yet.
My '89 GQ can still lock the wheels, so plenty of braking power and being a manual with 4.2 diesel, I almost never need to use my brakes on decents (assuming I grab the right gear) and in fact more often need to use a little bit of accelerator.
When they are due, I will be considering larger rotators, braided lines etc.
Another thing you didn't mention about braided lines, is the bulging of the lines when braking.
Braided lines give less, thus give a firmer feeling under braking which is why most race cars like using them.
He did mention "swelling" instead of bulging@@35manning Same shit, different smell
When are we going to see Liam's car?.....I've been waiting for weeks and weeks..
We will have an episode next week 🤙
The most overlooked component is the proportioning valve.
Over the years, I have changed everything with little result.
It wasn't until I put a new proportioning valve on that I actually got good brakes. Now it pulls up like a supercar.
Awesome vid as always Patty, I feel like the 80 doesn't get as much love from the fanbase these days because of Liam's GQ makeover, but it's awesome to see the odd little updates. The 80's really turning into a proper touring rig, and that's coming from a Patrol guy!
Great video Pat, I was just watching this while having lunch and was pleasantly surprised by the shoutout! Glad we could help and keep up the awesome content 👌
No worries!! Absolutely live by your tutorials! Cheers :)
Great video as always guys, safety can be boring and is often overlooked in favour of more fun mods. That's a tangible improvement for sure.
They should make a huge difference mate..
A bit of gentle carressing with a 40 grit flap wheel and a cardboard cereal box shim for clearance testing and you can run 15 inch rims on the rear of the 80 series. The fronts clear the 15s untouched. Don't ask me how I know...
great video! I remember upgrading the brakes on my '85 L300 4x4 to 1995 pajero brake assemblies and a custom rear disk conversion. very similar results to what you've experienced!
Great video Pat, Luckily for me I'm running the bigger size on the 95 80 Series I do want to upgrade the rotors very soon. Plus I noticed one of the bearing races is a little loose inside the hub, So now looking at changing that over as well. Keep up the good work Lads. Almost at 100K 👍
Thanks bush TV! Lucky you haha! Cheers mate! Getting there!
I’m pretty sure you can tune up the rear end a bit so it splits the brake load more evenly and saves the front locking up so quickly when you stomp your foot on the brakes. Anyway, neat video. 👍🏽
Well done. Having upgraded the booster on my 76 after much delay due to the cost. I realised I should have done it sooner: the money was worth the additional safety
Great vid man. Might be worth mentioning the brakes are only as good as the grip you have available.
I did a brake upgrade on my 97" FT spec (which already has the bigger brakes) with some performance brake bits, huge difference in instant stopping power and long decents!
Even with the ABS on the 80 (which is very rudimetary), I had to pull the fuse for most road conditions. It actually causes a major increase in the stopping distance on gravel. The only benefit with keeping it would be the advantage of having steering while you run off the gravel or into some game haha
You should also consider upgrading the master cylinder to suit the new bigger calipers and just because the age of the old one as-well
Agreed, I forgot to mention this, I hadn't done alot of research on them, but agreed next thing to do for the braking system! Cheers
Unfortunately braided brake lines are a really bad idea on a 4wd that does remote travel!
The reason being……….you can’t clamp them like you can a rubber hose.
So if there’s ever an issue off road you can’t just clamp a hose to ensure you still have brake pressure to the other brakes.
Hey mate, I've blown a braided line and my vice grips clamped it off easy as. Dunno where everyone gets this from
Lovely Ep, My 1HZ - 1990 - 80 series on 265/75 x 16s has great brakes, and has a good hand brake Id never change, In fact the engineer who did my GVM upgrade said there better than a lot new 4wds out there,
Thanks Craig!
That second braking test at 11 mins, the roads wet... sure to lock up more easily.
your old man sure can craft anything mint vid
Another brilliantly done video. Superb editing and presentation. I agree with you 100% brakes are critical and often overlooked. Ive got a 1996 LC80 and already w/the bigger brakes, but they too I found lacking, so I've upgraded to the Heavy Duty dba rotors and Bendix pads. Though I'm yet to upgrade to braided lines. I"ll do them along with when I upgrade my brake booster. Great episode. 👍
Thanks Fatman! Means alot mate! Yeah makes a big difference driving know you can pull the car up a few metres quicker! Cheers
good grippy mud tires also help, I suspect with razars you won't even lock up
Great video once again, but watch you light bar. That's a defect waiting to happen. You can now get flush mounting ones that on the top bar.
Hit with a mullet 😂😂
It's a MALLET, not a MULLET.
🤣😂🤣😂
4.47 mark of video.
I mean, you could use a mullet. Just need to hose off the blood and guts afterwards.
I wanted him to hit it with a mullet
This video made my sunda🎉
Thanks ausie arvos ❤
From Tanzania.
Thanks so much krish, means alot!! 🙏
Whenever I hit the brakes on my old XJ, I cross my fingers and hope for the best. Tiny front discs and dodgy rear drums…it’s not exactly confidence inspiring!
I did this on a mate's early Sahara 80, it actually stops now!
Check out bearing adjustment nuts from Trail Gear in the states, much better setup than the two locking nuts and lock washer.
Thanks mate! Yeah it makes a big diffrence!! thanks for that info, that looks really interesting, might have to try them out! Cheers :)
I have an 92 LandCruiser, and I can’t believe how small the brake rotors are. Landcruisers don’t like to stop accelerate or corner.
Well presenred Patrick, good job!
Thanks Allan!
Be careful with Protex 4WD pads, I put a set in my GU and they were great around town but out on the trails and on steep descents they would fade massively. I changed them out immediately after that. (I don't normally say anything negative about products but this is super critical and it needs to be said.)
Great vid.
Thanks mate! 🤙
finally another vid ive been waiting weeks ahaha
Still keen for gum boys was late today 😅was out the the kids on the mx track
great to see this important info coming out, safety will keep you and your 4X4 safer and on the roader longer :D
did you swap the rears for the fronts? when rotating tires?
Very good vid on your part Pat. Love how you made your own template to cater for the rears instead of going to toyota.
As for the brakes.. haven't heard of them but on the market for a brake upgrade for my 04 td42ti ute.
P.s was this a sponsored vid from the brake manufacturer or just an upgrade you've had your eyes on?
Just fine the same with my 105 series! Worth checking your brake portion valve if the 80’s came with them? Mine was seized
Well done, another great vid 👍
Thanks mate!
hydrobooster is the best thing i ever did to by gq wagon.
Same with gu, best brake mod you could do, doubles your line pressure. No need for bigger tb48 calipers and rotors
Doesn’t matter how good your brakes are if your tyres can’t grip the tarmac, something off-road tyres are shit at.
You should of done the handbrake shoes whilst you where there mate also an easier way to bed in brake pads find a concrete surface and rub the pads on them in a circular motion count 6-10 rotation and done.
You can improve the braking a little bit more aswell buy upgrading the booster
So going camping in the Grampians at the end of July wondering the best place to do that any ideas would be appreciated thank you
well done on making flat spots on your tyres....on next weeks episode we got new tyres fitted! 🤣🤣
😂😂 I know right
you should also rust proof under the 4wd
great job but no anti rattle springs on the front?
great video i am wondering did u mention that u should bleed the brake as well
My 93 GXL does have ABS.
First question, does the 100 Series have bigger calipers to fit the bigger pads, & do they fit the 80 series.
Secondly, I thought this video was going to be about installing a dual diaphragm brake booster. But you didn't?
how much would it cost to do everything
You definitely don’t want your tires skidding as that can be a loss of traction thus you slide further and you aren’t able to steer if you need to
Thats a better thumbnail lads.
Bleed the brakes?
The main thing to remember is that if you’re going to driving a big heavy 4WD around you wont be able to stop like a proper car - because physics. 4WD tyres have relatively poor grip, the dynamics are poor and the weight is a lot of kinetic energy to lose.
So drive slower and conservatively on public roads and try not to kill anyone - im looking at you lifted ranger drivers!
Nice upgrade. Just a question, is it viable to retrofit ABS on the 80 series?
I think the later models that abs, I know the 105 series did
105 pads have a little more surface area, they're not thicker.
Seems like a lot of work for a small upgrade. Why not get them from a 70 or something else from this century
Bruuh u forgot the drum brakes in the back of the car
The downside to braided lines is if you damage them out 4wding etc (yes a stick or branch can still puncture them) you won’t be able to crimp them off. And it’s not a race car so the effective benefit of braided lines is zero.
load of shit, braided lines lessen fade because they’re not rubber
You don't need a race car to benefit from braided lines. The main improvement over standard rubber lines is the reduced expansion of the line under braking, giving more feel and allowing greater hydraulic force to be applied to the pistons, rather than lost to expansion in the lines.
My 4x4 is a RN46. It will not stop in any kind of emergency lol
Moose?
I've smashed a few roos but never a moose.
And because the road is wet
I like watching u guys but you have a hoist why are u still sitting on the floor?
You need to learn Modulation Braking.
Hello, I am a roof tent manufacturer from China, hope to cooperate with you
plus 60km stop not 80
Anyone reading this, what ever you do, don't run bendix pads, especially the heavy duty 4wd pads, absolute rubbish, as in dangerously bad.
Also slotted rotors are not advisable, use solid units, dba 4000 series are good. If you don't CLEAN them well you will ruin them from day one with shudder that'll you will ever get rid of. Bed in pads using manufacturers instructions.
Braided brake lines are less flexible and can perform worse then new oem lines in terms of longevity, who cares if the pedal is .00052% firmer with braided lines.
Brakes are over rated. Bullbars are all you need.
Get rid of those shit tyres to
More advertising crap . No thanks. Just another sponsor plug
20th view
Very lucky would make the car nice to drive being able to stop ! hopefully a cheap enough mod ! 🛻📹🤙😎
Hey mate pigs behind you
How good is partsouq, get all my genuine Mitsubishi parts from them, and cheaper then what the local dealer can!
They are mechanics best kept secret
@@AussieArvos home mechanics you mean? 😬
Simple answer is NO
Brilliantly presented and another informative episode. No doubt about your creative and editing skills. I mean, these are TV level quality segments. But not only that, they;re easy to follow and easy to understand. 👏👍 Such a cheeky thumbnail 😁
Thanks you Hammer!! that means alot mate! HAHAH i know right, cheers :)
Is fitting the bigger disc not require the 16inch rim? Ive often read guy's wanting to fit 15inch rima to the later year models
Good to see you guys back. Great idea to upgrade the brakes on your vehicle, really aids in stopping. At 4:46 I really don't think the poor mullet would be to pleased to be tapping the cap lol 😂
Just a thought if you’ve done a two inch lift, did you readjust your load sensing and proportioning bypass valve,as the valve is set to factory height, this could be putting to much into the front end brakes making them lock up .
Great video mate definitely need a good break upgrade especially while loaded up and over 3T 4wd
100%! Cheers :)
just a heads up your temperature readings probably aren't accurate, you cant measure heat visually on shiny things like brakes!
I have a 91 HDJ 81 with the very small rear rotors. The rotors are very expensive to replace and I'm considering upgrading. Not sure if the backing plate will need to be replaced.
If your fr9nt brakes are l9cking before the rears then your LSPV needs adjusting. Your rears should always lock first, just before the fronts.
Love the channel and your work boys, cracker of an episode. I've gotta say though this convinced me to stick with my stock brakes. If you're looking to shorten the braking distance, any possibility of locking up Is going against the gain. Rather put both feet into it than thinking about having ro regulate brake pedal pressure when avoiding an accident.
Thabjs Brad! yeah makes you think!, wouldn't be an issue if you had ABS but i definitily can't just slam it to the floor like i used too, have to be more controlled. i have noticed since making this that the bigger rotors have been better for more repetitive braking e.g long hills, as the caliper stays cooler.
Have you changed the Brake Load Proportioning Valve? Mine started to leak and I since changed it and I felt it helped with the stoppping
cant beat a bigger booster aswell. having drilled rotors will prevent fade caused by gases being built up from the break pads when they heat up
"Next we adjust the handbrake"
We all know Toyota handbrakes are non-existent 😅
my dad has 2 2.4L Hiluxes that crashed on the same hill because they couldn’t stop :(
You should mention that the brake rotors comes with oil so you must use brake cleaner on it to get rid of it first before installing
So I assume you’re not running 15s?
16" rims, and with the new rotors in a very close fit, no chance with 15"
Spewing I’m running 15s 😅
Hey patty, loving you're channel! Can i ask where did you find your factory service manual online?
And what were the part numbers for the new backing plates? Ive just done big brake upgrade on my 80 and bent them to clear.
keep in mind you can also fit an bigger brake booster which will require less pedal effort and make braking more predictable!
With your rear axle seals be sure you push them in past the little leading edge. Otherwise, they like to walk out and fill your bearings with oil.
Thanks Dean! Part numbers in the description! And if you google Toyota 80 factory service manual you should find it! 🤙 Thanks for the info!
Cheers
Oh and yes and I think upgrading the brake booster could be a good one too!! Just didn't get around to it this time!
Those tests showed just how good ABS is!!
Another great episode 👍🏻
I got a 4wd so i dont have to stop 😂
Very cool upgrade
LOL @ Special bearing pre-load tool. Get yourself a brass drfit punch and read-up on pre-loading.
Nah. Just get the 3 times finer bearing adjuster. Made in Adelaide. Look them up.
Bloody good job mate, well done! Like your enthusiasm, open & honest demeanour and having a good crack without Bullshit!! Like you I keep my vehicle & camping gear reasonably simple versus some other 4WD shows with all the bells & whistles, complications and massive weights their hauling around. My early BT50 just racked up 252,000 clicks of reliable trekking in pretty much most environments around OZ including working as a driving instructor, engineering work at mining & resource sites etc. Next time your in East Gippsland, would be thrilled to hook up.
Any time I pick up a spanner I'm excited if it's a mod or a general peace of maintenance. Enjoy the process of working on your car ( mechanic by trade so even after 5 days of working on cars I still love when the weekend comes and I can work on my rig)
Another great video Pat! I was looking forward to seeing you remove the cone washers because i reckon you would be one of the few that do it correctly 😅
Great video boys.
Thanks John!
brakes have always been my second mod, right after full exhaust, did it on my falcon and my paj
Great video mate. I reckon you should have given the hand brake shoes a good buff up with the wire brush.
Should have thrown some nitro axles in it while you were going man! Perfect video
And upgrade the cap screws as they shear off too easily.
Hahaha should of 😉 thanks Tristan!
the stock proportioning valve wouldnt be set up for the larger front rotor, adjusting it might get you an even better braming distance
