I remember many years ago when my sister was teaching in Burgeo and she brought back the family whom she was boarding with their recipe of Shipwreck. It was a can of corned beef, potato quarters and a can of tomato soup and a few veggies in the oven. It was so tasty!
My Newfie great granny had a woodstove in her kitchen, except hers was white & she would had approved of your woodstove. How I miss her baking & cooking. Food tasted so good with the wood.
My grandmother had the same stove, and you're absolutely right. The food did taste different and so much better. That's how we find cooking with this stove. It's like nothing can be compared to the taste.

You are a good man. I wish my Dad was alive. He died from brain cancer when he was 61, I was 26. I look after my Mum now. Family is the best thing, always stay in touch and love each other like they may be gone the next day.
Sorry for your loss. You're absolutely right. A lot of people put more value in material items than they do people in their lives. Actions will always speak louder than words. Material items can always be acquired tomorrow, but the one person might only be here today.
Hello, Mate, yes, my beloved grand taught me this similar awesome meal. She called it " The Farm Pot " as most of my family were farmers and or tradesmen. She would grind / cook, either beef or pork and layer the same way with what ever veggies from the cold storage under the kitchen. I carry on that tradition to this day. Just found your videos and truly love it and the traditions of our beloved family ancestors. Thanks & Cheers Mate. God Bless to you and yours, from Eastern Ontario a fellow Canuck 👍😊🍁 PS: nothing cooks and tastes better than cast iron cooking.👍❤️
You're absolutely right Paul, cast iron is the best for cooking. It's amazing the different names for the same recipe. We also call it, 7 layer dinner. I believe it's so important to keep our traditions alive, especially old recipes. This generation doesn't cook like our grandparents did many years ago, and in a few generations from now, most of our traditional recipes will be a thing of the past. It's sad to lose a part of our identity.
That is awesome! This is definitely a dish that's served almost everywhere with a few different ingredients, of course. It is amazing to see where people are from that recognizes this dish. Thanks for watching and commenting.
We grew up on this (in Michigan) and I have learned that my ancestors, on my mother’s side, came from New Brunswick. My husband and I have been to “The Rock” and loved it!
Wow, it's always nice to talk to people who have visited Newfoundland. I love New Brunswick, I spent a lot of time working there, and my sister lives there now.
The recipes I've seen call for 1/2 to 1 cup rice & after adding the tomato soup, fill the can with water & add. This liquid cooks the rice. No matter what veggies you add, I bet it tastes great.
I am from the US, Indiana. I’ve also never heard of this. It looks amazing. I can’t wait to try it for my next family meal. My kids will LOVE this! Thanks so much for sharing! 💖

That sounds delicious. Cast Iron really makes the difference to the taste of the foods. The constant heat cooks everything at a totally higher level of cooking

I make 1 pound ground beef, drain the fat, 1 can each peas, carrots, and diced white potato 1/4 sweet onion at least once a week for dinner Virginia here. Love that Browning cast iron
The stove is made in Nova Scotia, sold by Home Hardware, check their website. Its a J. A. Roby Inc stove. I thought it was made in Nova Scotia, but I think it's a Quebec company.
never knew it was a NL recipe...i love it and make it sometimes i use pork chops instead of ground beef...i dont put turnip in mine but might give it a try....i eat it with a spoon!!!
Hi, I’m a fellow Newfoundlander and I have been watch almost almost all your videos. You are a great ambassador for Newfoundland and are doing a bang up job on promoting our lifestyle and foods that are usually scoffed at by many on the mainland. I’m building a place in Hearts Delight and plan to put a wood range similar to that beautiful stove you have in your garage. Whee did you get it? One last thing, don’t stop imitating your parents, it brings me back to my youth. You are definitely a great Newfoundlander, please don’t ever change :o))
Much appreciated for the great comments. Most people can relate to their father never admitting they were wrong. Haha, dad keeps asking me where do I come up with the content for him, haha. We ordered the stove through Home Hardware. It's a J.D. Roby. It took 6 months to arrive as they usually builds the stoves as they gets orders for them. I believe there made in Nova Scotia.
@@NewfieLifestyle what’s funny is that I don’t think I have actually heard your father speak on any of your videos yet. How crazy would it be if they did an imitation video of how they see you :o))
@Fellow_Newf dad keeps asking me how do I come up with the script for him, I tells him it's yesrs of listening to him speak. He doesn't realize it's an exact copy of himself. Mother, on the other hand, is an exaggeration of her personality except for shopping and anti-aging creams 😄
Just found your channel. Very interesting. Thank you for sharing. I had a friend (died a couple years ago) from Flatrock and I always found his home area to be a place I would love to visit.
Lots of good memories watching this. True comfort food in cold weather, or even warmer weather! I would make it exactly as you’ve instructed, but add parsnips. Yummy!
We made some meat pies last fall, and we plan to make even more this fall. It's perfect frozen and taken out on days. You just don't feel like cooking.
I used to make this a lot but I always put the meat in raw on top of the veggies and that lovely beef flavour goes throughout. I also use 2 cans of soup, not just one. A family favourite.
Mom does the same thing. I cooked it first because the meat was so greasy. We normally use ground moose meat, but we were all out. I'm hoping to get our moose this fall, dad as a license.
Mate can you post your woodfired oven down to Australia please? It's a beauty. What a great way to cook. Good clip mate. Really enjoyed it. Great meal for the colder climates.
Thanks, much appreciated! Yes, this stove is amazing. It's designed like the old fashion stoves from my grandparents' days, the heat is incredible. Everything tastes different being cooked over the stove, and it's because the heat is constant and never drops. Even eggs taste better.
@@NewfieLifestyle I am down in Queensland, Australia. A mate of mine in Toronto put me onto your channel. I remember my grandmother cooking on a wood stove. On school holidays i used to chop all her firewood for her. Great memories.
Today's generation will never experience the great times we had growing up and the foods that we ate at our grandparents. In many ways, it's sad that those experiences can't be passed on to the next generation
When mom made it she never cooked the hamburger meat before she put it in the oven. And she always specified can of peas (juice included). I had a aunt who always used corn instead of peas. To each there own. I've never had a bad plate of seven layered dinner.
Yup, I did forget the green peas. If I had good ground beef or ground moose meat, I would have just put it in the pot, but this wasn't good ground beef, it was full of grease. I like some grease but I don't like my food swimming in grease hahaha
We've had sweltering heat here so I made this in the sun oven and it was very tasty. I let it cook for 8 hours with intermittent full sun. I'll make this again!
Its great to have you here from Missouri. Its a popular dish from many different places and all slightly different, but a very hardy and delicious meal. Its great during our cold winter months
Me too!! I’ve never heard of it either & hubby wouldn’t like turnips or parsnips (I do though), but I’m sure I could adapt it. My great grandfather was French Canadian and fought in the Civil War when he was 15. He got remarried and had my mom’s mother when he was a lot older after settling in Buffalo NY. My mom is dead-she was born in 1920-and she never cooked this 🤷🏻♀️ It looks great though! Thanks!! I love the stove!
Had this a lot in northern Ontario. We didn’t use parsnip or turnip, we didn’t precook the ground beef, and we mixe the tomato soup with boiling water before pouring it in. Sooo good!
Turnip is a vegetable that's very common in Newfoundland. We eat almost as much as potatoes. I forgot to add water, mom always did, and mom usually cooks everything together as well.
This is a very familiar dish to most people. That's the beauty of these kinds of recipes. You get to see the different ingredients from people all around the world.
I haven't had this meal in years. Just put it together in the slow cooker because it is way too warm and muggy to have the oven going. Will let you know how it turns out. Great job, love the videos...keep em coming. Would love to see some bottling instructions/recipes for moose, rabbit, fish, etc.
The fall is coming fast, and dad has his moose license, so hoping he will be successful and we can bottle some moose. I will be dokng some rabbit catching in October, plus we plan to bottle lots of Beets and home-made Relish.
GREAT recipe. Any combo dish like that which blends all those flavors can easily turn into feasts fit for Kings. In my recipe I've used sweet potato, roasted Brussels sprouts, and garlic (including garlic powder), and parsnips which add a certain minty flavor to the mix. Keep up the good work! Oh by the way, I enjoyed listening to your Atlantic accent. Here in the Twin Cities we have many Canadians because of our love for pro hockey. Their accents are so different from yours. 😀
Depending on where you live here in Newfoundland, the accent can be very strong and hard to understand at times. There's an area of the island that you swear you're in Ireland. Newfoundland is considered the most Irish island outside of Ireland. If you traveled the island you would notice the difference in dialect from area to area.
Yeah price of lean ground is brutal. Great job on the seven layer dinner pretty much the same way I make mine. Got me drooling here. 🤤. Hope you have a great day.
My husband and l love this reciepe, our kids not so much, sometimes when l premix the soup and water l add some chili powder just for variety. It is a comfort meal,
It's great to have you here from Michigan! To have a connection through food is amazing. We can be different counties and still have very similar tastes.
Very good! I like turnips but beloved wife subs sweet potato. Sometimes we’ll add a small can of V8, a dash of Worcestershire and couple cubes of beef bullion. So just personal tweeks
This looks delicious and I'm going to try it although I would say the canned soup is pretty processed but the vast majority of those ingredients look delicious and hearty.
Getting a few tomatoes and making a little sauce is pretty simple. Easy way to had a few spices or even some hot sauce. Its a great meal for a stormy day
My mom used to make this. Rather than tomato, she used mushroom soup and a can of evaporated milk. Unfortunately, Campbell’s soup doesn’t taste the same as it once did. Either way, that’s some right nice eats.
Nothing will ever be as good as mudders! She cooked with love that I can still taste. Miss u mom.

never knew it was a NL recipe...i love it and make it sometimes i use pork chops instead of ground beef...i dont put turnip in mine but might give it a try....i eat it with a spoon!!!
I never thought to use pork chops, that's should be delicious.
Yeah! My fam uses pork chops too. Lol. 😁👍
I definitely got to try it
I really like cooking the rice that way, and that dish has gotta b delicious.
It's a very simple and hardy meal. It's great for our cold winters.
Love your cast iron pot. I love to cook in cast iron. I will try this recipe. Love the ingredients. Thank you for the video. Have a blessed day
Thank you for watching. I truly appreciate the kind words, you you have a blessed day as well 🙏
Hi, I’m a fellow Newfoundlander and I have been watch almost almost all your videos.
Thanks for watching. Newfoundland is a beautiful place to have a summer cottage. Life is more laid back with amazing scenery.
Lots of good memories watching this. True comfort food in cold weather, or even warmer weather! I would make it exactly as you’ve instructed, but add parsnips. Yummy!
You're absolutely right. It's a definite comfort food.
That looks really great! I'm from the south and never heard of this but what a great idea even for a slow cooker! Thank you!
Thanks for watching Jackie. It would be perfect in the slow cooker.
We have a dish of layered potatoes and onions in Texas. This looks amazing and much better. Lol. Have to try it.
I just did a video of scalloped potatoes with layered potatoes, onions, bacon, and then added a second layer, then topped with cheese.
Omg that looks so good cant wait to try it. Plus think this a good meal for when I go deer hunting. Will try this out also in the fall
It's a perfect meal for the fall. A day out hunting and coming home to this will taste even better.
Looks like a good pasty filling
We made some meat pies last fall, and we plan to make even more this fall. It's perfect frozen and taken out on days. You just don't feel like cooking.
spoon for sure. Nice video thanks Mate.
Your welcome, thanks for watching
Epic stove! Great recipe, can’t wait to try this! Thank you.
Thanks, it as the old fashion look to it and it's the best for cooking
I used to make this a lot but I always put the meat in raw on top of the veggies and that lovely beef flavour goes throughout. I also use 2 cans of soup, not just one. A family favourite.
Mom does the same thing. I cooked it first because the meat was so greasy. We normally use ground moose meat, but we were all out. I'm hoping to get our moose this fall, dad as a license.
@@NewfieLifestylenow you’re talkin’!
You have the same cookstove as I do. It's been awhile since I've made a 7 layer dinner. yummy
We call it the same thing, 7 layer dinner. It's perfect for the cold winter months or after a hard days work.
@@NewfieLifestyle Absolutely mate.
That's not a stove. THIS is a stove.
Looks great, thanks for sharing!
Thanks for watching!
Never had or heard of it, but it looks interesting.
Thats the best way to cook this dish is slow cooking.
Never heard of this before today. I'm in Missouri.
Great stuff going on there... I saw the other cast iron skillet on the stove and was waiting on some corn bread to go with that!
It's great seeing how people from other places make this dish. Thanks for watching. It was much appreciated
It looks so good !
I have had a casserole similar to this using some of the same veggies
This is a very familiar dish to most people. That's the beauty of these kinds of recipes. You get to see the different ingredients from people all around the world.
Awesome video!
Glad you enjoyed it
Good old home cooking. Norwegian much here in Oregon.
Glad to have you part of our community
Cast Iron is the BEST. Great video and well done preparing this Traditional N/L meal!
Everything tastes better from cast iron
Buddies accent is like Northern Ontario.. and yes we also make layered baked food here as well.
I was gonna say...this is the most articulate Newfie I have ever heard!
Looks delicious! Going to try this out for sure
Some people uses pork chops which I think would be even more delicious
We made a version of that for church suppers - N. Minnesota.
It's a popular dish. Obviously, people make it slightly different depending on where they live, and it's always great to see the differences.
Amazing! Looks great.
Thank you do much!
Nice stove boy,
St
John's ship wreck is alot different.
Sauge, tomato, spuds, and green peas. Onions if you like. Yours look delicious too.
GREAT meal friend!!!
Thanks
Looking forward to trying this.
Thanks! I love it after a hard day working outside. It really hits the spot.
My husband and l love this reciepe, our kids not so much, sometimes when l premix the soup and water l add some chili powder just for variety. It is a comfort meal,
It's definitely a comfort meal. Thanks for the tip!
My Mom made this for dinner all the time, I live in Southwest Michigan.
It's great to have you here from Michigan! To have a connection through food is amazing. We can be different counties and still have very similar tastes.
Very nice. Long may your big jib draw.
Many many thanks
Very good! I like turnips but beloved wife subs sweet potato. Sometimes we’ll add a small can of V8, a dash of Worcestershire and couple cubes of beef bullion. So just personal tweeks
Sounds delicious
We sometimes replace the minced meat with chickpeas and walnuts, very delicious as well.
Good idea
OMG! That looks great! Add some fresh bread with butter! SOLD HERE!
Fresh bread right from the oven, that would have topped it off for sure.
Yeah a lot of old foods have changed, I guess less real ingredients and more unhealthy additives
I agree. Campbells mushroom soup awful now. I still use the tomato for a shrimp mousse ring but it’s not the same.
They are saving on salt,Campbell's , corporate nincompoops, speaking profit over flavour.
Sounds so much better than tomato sauce..
I agree many things don’t taste like they used to
