  • Bob hiked to the Golden Cathedral Pothole Arches on Day 6 of the 2022 Fall Arch Rally in the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, Utah. The 4.6 mile hike started at the Egypt Trailhead and took us past the South Fence Canyon Arch as we descended toward the Escalante River. After much wading through the river, we entered Neon Canyon and reached the Golden Cathedral Pothole Arches in an amphitheater that blocked any further progress up the canyon.

Wow! The cathedral is very impressive. Looks like you had to do a lot of wading. Is autumn the best season to go? I wonder if there a drier time of year that a person could do this hike.

I'm guessing that fall is the best time. The summer can be very hot there and I think they get monsoonal thunderstorms, which leads to flash flooding. Because there's so much exposed sandstone in the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, a lot of the trails tend to settle into watercourses at the bottom of canyons to get to any branching canyons.
