    this is the most down to earth video i've seen about this topic. i love how you present your videos - it feels very lowkey and comfortable.

    What a beautiful face. I love mantises. The intelligence they seem to possess is astounding.

      Its quite unfortunate that humans are doing a LOT of the heavy lifting in the belief in mantid intelligence, because theyre VERY dumb. 😄🤣. Humans trust human-like faces, and these guys evolved such similar faces, necks and eyes (sort of) to us that it hijacks our brains into believing theyre smart. Front facing eyes, gets us every time. 🤣

    Ooooooooh, you knew this was coming 😆I want to say cool video but I hated it lol paradoxia are the only mantis I don't particularly like (flower mantids excluded as that's another story) - as for terrible pets...my wife has had a nice big shield mantis sat on her shoulder watching her play stupid games on her PC now for about 2 hours, and just the expression on its cute little adorable face is enough for me to wonder why cats are a thing when mantis exist! I'm livid! 😆Great video lmao. I may have to do a follow on this on my channel lol

      I will come clean -- my dislike of mantids is mostly centered around all the stupid fancy ones. I have thoroughly enjoyed Choreadodis and WILL be buying more of those. I will keep Choreas, Ghosts and hell Ill throw in a Chinese mantis or Rhombodera stalli in there but beyond that, Ive yet to find a pickier for care arthropod. BUT! Keep in mind Im comparing them to pets such as beetles (cake walk), tarantulas (essentially a pet rock), true spiders (easy as hell) and isopods. So this video is comparatively my dislike of mantids. And I agree with you completely: we should have less cats and more mantids haha

    The life span is exactly why I am into tarantulas for the most part. Was offered a couple ghost egg sacs so I'm gonna take those for the experience but not something id chase after

      Oh 100%. Ghost mantids in my opinion are the best mantis species, but I will always prefer a Tarantula pet if lifespan is my goal in a new pet.

    If mantis lived longer they will be more popular well that's my opinion

    • @juicesarthropods
      @juicesarthropods  Год назад +4

      100% agreed. If the hell they put you through also meant they'd live 3-5 years, I would 100% be on that train. But the hell you go through for a pet to die before the next season of your favorite show comes on is crap haha

    Picky eater? I had one and it ate grasshopper (just uploaded a short to proof it ;) and crickets. Also of course flies... However I dont like them so much because as they are so dark/black are hard to film/photograph. Also they are hard to feed because they are feared quite easy.
    Other mantises like Hierodula, P.wahlbergii or Creobroter are way calmer and fearless in my experience.
    With humidity it's strange to see so many different opinions- some say it's better not to spray so much other say mantises like it wet...

    • @juicesarthropods
      @juicesarthropods  Год назад +1

      Crickets and grasshoppers they take well - where I am saying theyre picky is any "non erratic' feeders that are more easily accessible, such as dubias. Out of 50 ghosts, I had less than 5 who immediately took crickets, but in time they all eventually would but its annoying to ween them onto them in my opinion. I honestly feel like the ghosts "fear" is in part what makes them better pets vs say a r.stalli who will freaking try to eat YOU 🤣. And yes mantids care guides are generally awful because they're often written by non breeders, just sellers haha

  • @meowmix4jo
    @meowmix4jo 3 месяца назад

    Omg yes these guys are so picky. They're not the only species I've had that issue with though. P. spurca has very similar behavior when it comes to eating, they just sit in one spot and wait for food to come to them. I've had success feeding species like that the grubs of dermestid beetles while they're young since you can handle them a lot easier than fruit flies plus they're free and multiply like crazy if you're already keeping crickets or roaches. It does suck how short mantid lifespan is, they're still my favorite animals to keep though.

      yeah I unfortunately had to stop breeding them just due to by the time theyre a size where you can safely sell and ship them, theyre like 9 months from death which is unfortunate.
