Juice's Arthropods
Добавлен 29 окт 2021
The goal of this channel is two fold: To provide care sheets, facts, and information regarding the care of all species that we breed, but secondly and MOST importantly to destigmatize the wonderful Arthropods we interact with daily, or may see in the future. Through hopefully entertaining videos, we hope to help those with fears come out of their shells, and see this wonderful world through a whole new lens.

200$??? I get my giant African millipedes for 10-20$ each idk where people buy them 😅
Well in the states they JUST NOW lowered to $75. Because I lowered my prices to that haha
So theyre like lazy Mogwai except they can eat after midnight? Awesome. I was wondering why my little spring doesnt move much. It (just chills in one spot unless I disturb). I noticed they misted her at the pet store,I let them know I saw/read that theyre a dry species, so I just let that dry out when I got it home, and havent misted since. I got one of the first two they ever have had, but I have researched prior because I almost ordered one online a few months ago. I didnt want one immediately but went in to buy more shrimp, saw the two velvet springs and got one of those instead! Im excited!! 🖤🕷🕸🖤
A very apt and accurate description yes 😂😂😂. A little water won't kill them immediately but it's just one of those things that people are NOT good at properly monitoring so it's safer to say no vs yes. And congrats!!
I so enjoyed this video! Thank you! Looking to adopt my first Regal 💗💖
You are so very welcome and thank YOU for enjoying it!
I love the cons section😂
😂😂♥️♥️
What is ideal temperature for them?
So I keep them between 72-80 degrees and they seem to thrive. I am unsure of the place they lived climate range off the top of my head though
My Grammastola Pulchra sling went underground for 7 months, I was starting to doubt she was ok when one day I saw a spider shaped hole in the dirt. She was back and she's been out and about ever since!
Its always a little scary but they always seem to come out fine! Glad yours is back!
~ 8:00 - new worlds are slower than old worlds- disagree- psalmopoeus and tapinauchenius sp. are faster than nearly every arboreal old world I have worked with. I'd much rather be chasing a pokie or omothymus than a psalmopoeus, P. Irmina is the only spider I have seen telep
I don't disagree - and obviously there will be SOME deviations but Psalmopoeus and Tapis faster than POKIES? I disagree 😂😂
If we took speeds of all new worlds vs all old worlds and averaged it out, I think we can BOTH agree that the average by far would be old worlds. For every say Tapi is an Aphonopelma. For every Psalmopoeus is a Brachypelma. But I can think of MAYBE three old worlds that wont make my heart drop a beat if it decides to bolt 😂
bros kinda smart but that shirt is goofy why u gotta be makin goofy things look cute
I can always recognize a true lover of fine artisanal clothing. ♥️♥️♥️
OK, I get the dry part but how much ventilation do they need? I have an enclosure that does not have a lot of airflow. It’s a 10 gallon standing up with a door on the front. The door has holes in it. It’s one of those modification things from iHeart geckos. Would an enclosure like that work for these guys? I have several of these enclosures and I’ve been trying to figure out what I want to put in them. Since they are taller than they are wide, and they don’t have that much ventilation it’s challenging. Thanks
DM me on Instagram or send me an email to Juicesarthropods@gmail.com with picture of the enclosures. Lets see if we cant help you out!
exactly 😂 i’m like, i have tarantulas and they’re boring but i love them!! i do get dirty when working with tarantulas so i’m going to get a millipede!!
You totally should!
What about handling them do you wait till they are big? Or start when tiny?
So spiders never enjoy being handled ever so thats entirely up to you. Theyre more like fish - watch them, and you can enjoy them and hell, you can hold them to your enjoyment, but they wont ever get used to it, more like tolerate at best. But you are protecting them from birds and they get to live a safe life with you and you will love them and thats all that matters. 🥰
amazing video :3 im getting one of these guys soon
Thank you and CONGRATULATIONS!!
Just picked up a spider from you at the Lodi expo. I want to say thanks you. what a great buying experience.
You are so so welcome!!! And thank you again!
She is precious!
RIGHT? I love her so much
New subscriber
THANK YOU!
I’m confused you said something about a 37 x 37 x 37” container but then later you said a 37 gallon? 37 gallons is not very big? Your soil is 3 foot deep???How the heck do you ever find them? Sorry for the questions just trying confirm and learn as much as I can.
3x their length on all sides is considered the "baseline" by most millipede people, which is technically the CORRECT way to do things, the 37 gallon home depot bin is essentially the "ballin on a budget" option. My soil depth IS around 1.5ft deep and you find them because they hang out on TOP about 80% of the time to be honest! Hope this clarifies!
Thank you. I just subscribed to your channel, I found it very recently and I have been enjoying your videos!
Great video. Did you do simulate a rainy season beforehand?
Nope. But their enclosures were on the damper side prior to pairing but didnt afterwards to get a sac or anything if thats what youre asking
@@juicesarthropods Thanks! I've heard anecdotally that some species living in areas with strong rainy seasons need to have those conditions replicated before the females will be receptive. Glad that isn't the case with these! Makes my job easier.
Enough with the insults" i've lost my appetite" 😂
😂😂
Great video. New sub.
thank you!!
Why is everyone talking about how expensive they are? Here in germany they are sometimes sold at 15-20 €. Are they really that expensive outside of Europe?
Yes . Europeans are always shocked to find out our arthropods of all types are often 10x what it costs there.
I have just ordered a pr florida female, I am so excited… I think she will be i5, can she have a mini mealworm if I crush the head first? I have also ordered flightless fruit flies. So I spray mist once every 2 days on the side of the enclosure? xx
In my experience, you want to just ensure that you don't feed her TOO big of a mealworm.- try not to exceed one the size of her body for mealworms, size of her abdomen for everything else. As for when spraying, it will depend on what city and state you live in but if its similar to Hayward, CA in humidity, then thats correct!
I’m in the uk it’s kinda cold here, I have a heat pad thing n thermostat coming in the post
So I unfortunately cannot speak to how often youll spray their enclosure there but let me ask for you!
How do you prevent mold and fruit flies?
You cant prevent mold, mold is inevitable. You can FIGHT mold with springtails however. For fruit flies, feed them sparing fruit and dont add too many vegetables in my opinion and you should be good
Yak yak yak
Can confirm, no large herbivorous mammals in this video.
here in the Philippines, there are many hobbyists who want to take care of regal jumping spiders. they have a pre order from europe cost 60 bucks
Thats about what we pay for them here but is that 60 pesos or 60 euros because thats an INSANE exchange rate if so!
@@juicesarthropods 3,000php its around 50-60USD
Thaaaaaaaaaats insane to pay that much 🤣🤣. Sounds like you may have discovered a side business you should invest in 🤣🤣
@@juicesarthropods Haha yes. the price is expensive because it is imported and there is no local breeder here in the Philippines. Jumping spiders are very in demand here today. there are those who invest so they can sell for 50-60usd. white bahamas is 100USD
@@juicesarthropods where do you live and how much do you sell jumping spiders?
This video was great!!! I just got one and although I had some knowledge you had some great tips that I hadn't thought of!
Glad you enjoyed it!!
How old is he? I have one the same size
About a year and three months old
A lazy jumping spider is so ironic
I mean, like humans, if food is just GIVEN to you, why hunt for it? 🤣🤣
Im just getting into millipedes so this was interesting for me as i want to give my gaint and olive millipedes best home i can so much appreciated thankyou for making it 😊
You are so very welcome!
Bitty, Bitty 🤎🤎🤎🤎
Haha yeah just a tiny lady 🤣🤣
I love spiders❤
Theyre the best!
Its cool
Aparently "communal" does not equal social 😅
Haha correct. The worst part is theyre HER babies!
Nice !! 🩷🤎💚
♥️
The extra word is crazy💀💀
Extra word?
where do recommend getting like... baby female giant african millipedes?
So when theyre super tiny, its really hard to sex them because every time you try to lift them, they roll up and make it impossible haha
@@juicesarthropods what website do you recommend getting them from though?
A captive breed millipede here in the uk is £20 which is about $17
Yeah the U.K bugs all cost like under $20. Thank god Im not a vendor there or Id die broke 🤣🤣🤣
@@juicesarthropods why is it so expensive in the USA
A couple reasons. 1. We have about a hundred times more laws on what species we can buy or import etc. 2. 99% of the biodiversity in the world for arthropods are in the "old world" countries. 3. Importing arthropods for original breeding stock costs $3500-$5k so breeders who are attempting to breed new species have to pass the costs on to the customer. 4. Lots of countries or continents cannot even sell to the U.S. due to APHIS and USFW laws. There are so many more reasons why but the main main main one is that European laws are null for bugs essentially.
@@juicesarthropods glad I'm European
Yeah, what Im saying is Europe has no laws preventing you from owning things which would limit their breeding so everything is fair game. Google USA Aphis and Arthropod laws and you'll see why its so expensive. 🤣
I just bought a female who the breeder thinks just had her mature molt, how long can I expect her to live?
On average? A year more. Maybe 8 months
Do you still recommend Reptisoil? I am looking at getting this species as my first millipede and have a bag of reptisoil I can use for substrate. Thanks!
Ehhhh. I dont to be honest because its a solid BASE substrate, but it lacks all of the other stuff you need to add to it. You can check out on my website the Royal soil blend we designed for inverts thats packed with stuff for them (and if too expensive, you can copy our recipe on the bag!)
@@juicesarthropods sounds good thanks!
@@juicesarthropods one last follow-up: is your soil designed to be an all-in-one, stand-alone substrate, or should I mix it with something like top soil? Should I also add decaying wood/leaves as well? Thanks!
@@juicesarthropodsoh, and how much soil do I need for a 10 gallon enclosure for ivories? Is one 4lb bag sufficient?
So my substrate is a stand alone and it has the leaves and starter rotting wood already added in, but the more rotting stuff the better!
What do they run now, about 20 bucks each?
People keep trying to sell them for that much, but like for instance ours we sell a 5 pack for $35 but we are just currently out.
I’m getting over my fear right now and when I went out in the yard today a teeny tiny jumper hopped onto my lap and then jumped onto my hand and it just hung out on my hand for about 30 minutes. It would also jump back and forth between my hands like it was playing. Soooo adorable I’m trying to work up the courage to get one as a pet 🥹
Take your time, watch videos like youre doing and when youre ready to buy one, reach out to me and if I don't have them? I can point you in the direction of who is trusted who does!
repashy suplerfly is like $20 for the smallest bottle in Canada lol, hella expensive
yeah its insane. Its why I dont buy it 😂
Ok I have a question and I have no one to ask. I have what I’m 95% sure is a regal jumping spider on my porch. Reddish brown with white spots. Looks like it has white teeth but I think it’s just fur. It has been living on my porch on a witch’s broom decoration for weeks. Is it going to stay there forever? I see it everyday. Another question is we’re supposed to get a hurricane soon and I am slightly worried about it. ( this is so bizarre to say because I have such a fear of spiders. Like freeze can’t move fear. For some reason this one doesn’t scare me. ) can they survive high winds and rain?
To the broom question: They will stay until it no longer works for them. They really kind of do whatever they want. If theyre finding food and nobody wrecks their hammock area, theyll keep returning if they feel safe. As for can they survive winds and rains, yes theyll just climb to an area where there are no winds and rain
@@juicesarthropods ok! Thanks so much for the reply! It’s actually pretty cute. And the porch is covered in bugs ( it’s Florida ) try as I may to keep them away. There’s like webbing on the broom now and everything not sure if it’s from this spider or not. It’s pretty funny there’s a camera right above the broom and this spider crawls in front of it like 100 times a day setting it off. Sometimes I’ll get a screen shot of a leg lol. I’m glad it will survive the storm!
Yeah, I mean this is of course pending it can climb to higher shelter. I'm not from Florida so I don't know how suddenly hurricanes occur but it should be fine!
Hey Juice! If you've raised any Hyllus diardi, would you say caring for them is about the same as these guys?
i unfortunately have not. YET 😈 I will let you know when I do but at this time I unfortunately don't have enough data on them!
Okay, but a lot of cats are really good at making their jumps. 😅
Eh. Watch a cat long enough, they will fail more often than they succeed. Their eyes are garbage 😂
Excellent. Thank you.
You are welcome!
You missed a very important pro point. They're really really pretty in that subtle elegance way. Everyone talks about the yellow knees, but the booty spots and the faint pink hue to their hair gets me. Gives you something to admire while trying to fight them for their water dish.
You are ABSOLUTELY right - and thats my bad. I was so wrapped up in trying to seperate their beauty from that of the Grammastola pulchra, that I failed in describing the beauty they have of their own. Good catch!
They're definitely not as hardy to me in my experience. I recently got an ivory and she died in less than a month. She was doing well at first, eating and pooping, but she was overly surface-active, and never burrowed. A few days ago it got a little hotter than usual, a few degrees higher than 80F, and she was gone. My N. americanus lives in the same enclosure and he had no issues at all. He was underground during the day and was able to escape the heat. I have no idea what the true cause of death was, but I'm not getting another one. I'll just stick with N. americanus, they're the truly hardy ones.
Oh, I for the record 100% agree that a N. americanus is and always will be a hardier millipede, and 99% of the Ivorys unfortunately are nowadays wild caught. The captive bred ones are INCREDIBLY hardy, but theyre also far more expensive so most people just dont. I am truly sorry to hear the passing of your millipede 😭
@@juicesarthropods I was told that she was captive bred but I guess you never know.
Millipedes as a whole are unfortunately, aside from a couple, just very sensitive. Where you live vs where theyre from can change so much. I would hope people claiming captive bred are being factual, but yes to your point some vendors lie. I highly recommend getting to know vendors, we WANT your business but if we are worth our weight in salt, we also know our sh*t and can communicate plainly - I hope this won't turn you off from trying again with a TRULY remarkable millipede, but do recommend getting a couple at a time if possible! And if you ever have questions? I am available @juicesarthropods on Instagram, Tik Tok and at my Facebook page
