Great video. Did you do simulate a rainy season beforehand?

Nope. But their enclosures were on the damper side prior to pairing but didnt afterwards to get a sac or anything if thats what youre asking

@@juicesarthropods Thanks! I've heard anecdotally that some species living in areas with strong rainy seasons need to have those conditions replicated before the females will be receptive. Glad that isn't the case with these! Makes my job easier.

So random query I guess? Are there studies or any sort of research about the behavioral differences of non-mature males and females. Watching your video about the male sun tigers being asshats and the offhand comment about your pulcripes not being the brightest spood in the ditch made me wonder. Anecdotally I've heard from people that their female G pulcripes are all very chill but their males are more erratic. My male is definitely a chaos child. Alternate theory is that they are the orange cats of the tarantula world sharing a limited supply of functioning nerve cells.

I was unable to find any scientific data aside from that on sexual cannibalism within female tarantula genetics, however! Anecdotally, I've identified across 50+ adult tarantulas the following and I compare it to cis males: both in adult cis gendered males and male tarantulas, the biological imperative to breed supercedes the intellectual desire to thrive beyond survival. So for male tarantulas, ALL they want to do is walk until they die - often declining food even for long periods of time just IN CASE the time taken for that meal could have been passing on their genes. This creates that "chaos" - the female on the other hand will live 2-3 times longer, but mostly because they use NEARLY NO energy whatsoever. What humans construe to be a calmness, in my hypothesis, is actually minimizing caloric using tasks and settling for instead passive behaviors (IE: moving incredibly slowly in zero rush, or not moving even at all). So in my non professional opinion, I think what youre seeing is in essence the human equivalent of older teen to 20 year old males doing irrationally stupid sh*t in hopes to pass on their genetics vs the females thinking theyre idiots and wont do the same tasks because they dont want to die 🤣

@@juicesarthropods *has a flashback to being a teenager and having male friends leave stolen hubcaps on the roof of my car in the middle of the night as gifts*
Yeah... that tracks with the risk taking behavior.
In all seriousness tho I agree with ya. The behavior in a male tarantula that feels chaotic such as slapping water dishes etc does make sense considering being more defensive and willing to wander is advantageous in even finding a mate. And for females, like you said, metabolically makes sense to be a pet rock in order to give the best chance to their egg sacks.

@@myowlhasantlers Oh, so the slapping water dish is definitely both male and female and thats because their vision is trash. Theyre reactionary screen savers essentially, so they FEEL the water hitting the dish, they go to bite it to eat it and the thing HITS them back. The AUDACITY! 🤣
