  • In 1977, Texas was preparing to play in the Cotton Bowl against Notre Dame, with national championship aspirations on the line. However, they ran into some trouble before the game when their preferred hotel, the Marriott, had other ideas. Chaos ensued because of it

I worked at a Comfort Suites in Austin, and the moms of the UT baseball team would always stay there. They were terrific. And random aside: I have a few Earl Campbell stories from his drinking days, but the one that always sticks out was when we were out getting dinner and Earl and his brother asked to sit with us at our table. Of course, we said. And so we all sat together, having a few beers and crawfish. But then they left without throwing in. The waitress laughed and said he does this all the time. We just take his off the bill. Shoal Creek Saloon on North Lamar. Love that place.

That '77 Texas squad played half the year with their 3rd string QB, who also played in the Cotton Bowl. Their #1 and #2 QBs both got injured in the Oklahoma game.

    CSB ALERT!
So for my 21st birthday, my Mom took me to LA in early January 2010. We stayed at a Marriott. It was very difficult to find hotels. I thought it was odd since the Rose Bowl wasn't taking place then. Well as we started seeing a lot of Texas fans and some Bama fans, it hit me: oh crap, I forgot the national title game *was* the Rose Bowl. And then we realized we stayed at the same hotel as the team!
Bonus: as we were going down the elevator the day of the natty, a taller player entered. My mom asked who he was and what he did. He gave us his name and said "oh I'm just a backup." And then I turn on the game that night out of curiosity and, to my surprise, the guy I saw under center for Texas was the guy that we shared an elevator ride. Meeting Garrett Gilbert that day was probably the closest thing I've had to encountering someone remotely famous haha

    Great work as always.
That madden quote may not have applied to the 1997 Sugar Bowl where UF coach Steve Spurrier complained about the late hits against FSU prior to playing them again in January

I think Madden was referring to teams complaining about their accommodations, as opposed to anything that happened weeks beforehand.

Nowadays, the bowl committee books one hotel for each team. For instance, the Sugar Bowl books two hotels across Canal Street from each other, the Marriott and the Sheraton.

This leads to a rather speculative Butterfly Effect (then again what Butterfly Effect isn’t part speculative?). The Marriott in Dallas led to the 49ers dynasty.

Texas should be staying at an "Motel 6" because Motel 6 will leave the light on for Texas.

This is very similar to what happened 30 years later with Man United & Courtyard (which is a Marriott owned brand) in Italy before the 2nd leg of the Champions League semifinal with Milan. At the time Courtyard was relatively new to the hotel scene in Italy only having entered the country 2 years before. Unlike in the US, Courtyard in Europe is on equal footing with Marriott in terms of quality which is the reason why Man United wanted to stay there. However when Man United tried to book rooms, the Courtyard in Milan said they couldn't for two reasons: One was that the majority of the rooms had already been booked due to Milan's Fashion Week taking place that same week. Secondly, the rooms that were available for Man United to stay in were being renovated. Man United especially coach Sir Alex Ferguson were livid about this & vowed never to stay at a Marriott branded hotel ever again. They ended staying at a Best Western which unlike Courtyard is exactly the same in Europe as it is in the US & could not sleep the night before because Milan fans quickly found the location of the hotel & made noise until 3 am in the morning. Not surprisingly, Man United lost the 2nd leg 3-0 eliminating them from the Champions League since they had barely beaten Milan 3-2 in the first leg back at Old Trafford. The ironic thing about this is that in 2021, Marriott became the official hotel partner of Man United.

I'm sure Texas being blown out only deepened the bad feelings. If they stayed there that often, you can understand how everything felt different somewhere else. BTW, the Marriott chain is owned by the Mormon Church and if you stay there around Christmas, they pipe in Christmas music through the sound system but not one song that mentions Jesus or God.

I don't blame Marriott in this case. Given the logistics involved and the realistic possibility of A&M winning the SWC and likely booking a Dallas Hilton based on precedent, that Dallas Marriott had to make sure it got a Cotton Bowl Classic participant in there. Texas learned the hard way that money talks and everything else runs a 5K. I was LMAO at Texas as this video went on! I don't feel any sympathy for the Horns in this case.
