      No it's not defective because VMD (RAID controller) is enabled in the BIOS, therefore, it can't see any SSD during Windows installation. You need to download and install F6 VMD driver during installation so it can see the SSD. It's been working this way since Windows NT and Windows 2000.

    Good review
    I agree the paste job is bad on that unit. However, the i9-13980HX runs hot period. I have yet to see an i9-13980HX from any manufacture NOT hit 100c momentarily. My Scar 16 will hit 100c for a brief moment when loading games, but usually settles in the 82/90c range... Cinebench 97c max... With a BIOS undervolt of -80 (max allowed by ASUS) my idol temps are around 42-52c. So yeah, 100c is high, but this is every factory i9-13980HX. The coil whine is a thing with 2023 Asus laptops. I have slight CPU coil whine with the fans at 5000rpm or higher... At 5000rpm you're in headphone territory anyway.. The coil isn't notable or absent during normal use.

    • @Olibelus
      @Olibelus Год назад +2

      Agreed, I have the 18 inch G834JZ with a 4080 and i9 13980HX. It's honestly fantastic so far, after 12 days of everyday use and gaming I have no complaints, however some of the CPU's 'P' cores do hit 100c sometimes during gaming for long periods of time or during stress tests, whilst the package as a whole is usually around 80c-85c. On idle the CPU usually runs at 50c and the GPU 45c. As you said, it's likely every i9-13980HX, they just run hot.

    • @Olibelus
      @Olibelus Год назад +2

      I've also tried undervolting it in BIOS but ASUS only allows an undervolt of -30mV whilst it states that it can go up to a maximum of -80mV but any value above -30mV doesn't work. Also Intel XTU doesn't work currently, so I hope they fix this eventually and allow us to undervolt it a bit more!

    • @GenTechPC

      i9-13980HX doesn't run hot, it's only poor pasting job and re-paste will fix it. MSI GE78 and GT77 with i9-13980HX don't even reach 90C under load with factory generic dry-type paste.

From your scores you gave on this video and the MSI GE78, the Asus is top in Fire Strike score, slightly higher in Time Spy, but slightly lower in all the others (You didn't do a Fire Strike Extreme for the asus, but you did for the MSI). Is it slightly lower because of the paste job? Also, is liquid metal not always better than traditional thermal paste? I watched your MSI video and the temps were insanely low for only using thermal paste. I'm guessing the fans are faster/move more air than the asus?

    Nice review, thank you! So your comment regarding liquid metal not being as good and offering service to repaste. If liquid metal is more expensive, more difficult to install and not as good for heat dissipation, why are manufacturers using it? I'm curious about this, as I might end up with the 4080 version of this laptop since that's all that seems to be in stock around here other than the Blade 18 that's 1/3 the cost more. I've repasted things before, but I can't remember a single time where it's ever given me better results than the manufacturers pre-applied paste.

    • @GenTechPC
      @GenTechPC  Год назад +1

      LM still the best for CPU but needs applied by hand, it needs to coat a thin layer and then apply the LM on the top. I think it's because Asus's manufacturing is applied by machine so don't get the best result.

      @@GenTechPC Then this was tested on stock profile not the Performance/Game profile. Hence the scores you're seeing. The Scar 18 has the same components (just a bigger cooling solution due to the larger size chassis). If you're going to show benchmarks, show them for the use case most people buy these laptops for. We should be seeing a Timespy of around 20.5k aggregate provided you do the simple step of putting the laptop in the correct fan profile (if you're running 3DMark you should be using Performance/Game profile) . Yes this laptop will be a bit hotter as it doesn't have the same size cooling solution due to chassis size but the temps are well within spec. You should also show actual temps of real world use, not just with a thermal camera or at idle. Temps after a 3DMark run would be more useful (especially if you do a 10 minute looping run to thermally saturate the cooling solution -- this will give you scores and thermals that are more indicative of real world use). There are plenty of tech RUclips reviews of the Scar 18 that use proper testing methodology and consistency in their process to make sure users get accurate data to make an informed buying decision.
