      To be fair summary offences have to be dealt with within six months or they are discontinued. So it is actually absolutely a line of defence.

      Actually in a court of law the defence solicitor would be questioning why these "annonymous sources" stayed silent since October. The media are not to be trusted, they do not operate as the public views them. The idea of a "free press" is a joke

      @@ricardosmythe2548 you’re fundamentally misunderstanding how unnamed sources work in journalism. Behind the scenes they’re not anonymous. My editor and the fact checking team have to know their names so they can follow up with them to verify the claim before it appears in print / on air. If it can’t be verified, I can’t use the information the source provided. You can’t compare anonymous sources to a court of law - because they’re not anonymous behind the scenes and because that’s not how a court of law works, so they’re not comparable.

      @@kanedNunable That's very true - the West seems to have a real fixation on idolatry over policy at the moment.
      Johnson, Trump, Corbyn - all amassing cults of people prepared to overlook any sin, even if it's one they've railed against in the past.
      One of the reasons I'm so overjoyed we have Starmer and Biden at the moment isn't because they necessarily have a compelling set of policies, but just because they're boring but competent.
      And it's difficult to amass a cult around a dull person.

      If he had come out and said that yes he had said "something like that" but he was just venting frustration privately and didn't actually mean it or else he wouldn't have ordered those lockdowns" it would have been fine. (One of the witnesses did say that it sounded like venting)
      But once again, he refused to admit reality and went Trump's way of "alternative facts".
      So yeah, he said it and his refusal to admit it implies that he meant it.
      I (sadly) don't see how he could go down for this, but if he does it will be of his own doing.

    Unnamed sources doesn’t mean that the sources is anonymous to the journalists that have interviewed them and are reporting the information. Unnamed sources means that the journalists are choosing to withhold the sources’ identities from the public, for one reason or another.

      The reason is that they will never be trusted with another "secret" again. This is how it works and every journalist out there knows that they have the right to protect their sources, and that it is protected by the law.

      Exactly. It is very common practice for journalists not to disclose their sources; either because they have been asked/told not to or choose not to for some other reason.
      Unlike "studies show..." which almost certainly means "what follows has no basis in fact..." but, ironically many people take as gospel.

      Cognitive dissonance is perfectly normal. Two things in your mind are at odds in your mind so you can accept it, change your perception, alter what you attribute to be the causes or deny it and form an alterantive reality. Altering your attribution can be healthy but it can go all the way to deep deep deep self delusion.

      I'm also not quite sure why the flat is seen as the more damaging issue than the quote either.
      Sure, it's not great but the quote suggests that the man running the country who decided how and when we would lock down and for how long was quite prepared to let "the bodies pile up in the street".
      If and when we actually get this lockdown inquiry, that ought to have tremendous ramifications for questions about the decisions he made and how many deaths could have been avoided by locking down earlier.

    I listened to this one live, it is as astonishing in the replay as it was live. Brilliant performance by Eddy Mair.
    There is enormous pressure coming from No.10 to identify the source, presumably so that they can be silenced by threats or bribery.

      Hardly a scandal. Who paid for a roll of wall paper is hardly headline news. I'm just glad the tax payer didn't pay for the refurb. ALL parties have donors - who expect a bit of back scratching in return. It is the whole aspect of donors to ALL parties which should be looked at.
      Labour has the unions as their major donor - they expect their backs to be scratched.
