  • Insecticides are sometimes necessary in farming. But some substances, like neonicotinoids, kill not only pests but bees as well. Now the Bayer Group, one of the main manufacturers of these pesticides, is coming under pressure.
    Scientists around the world have found that neonicotinoids are the main cause of mass bee deaths. Research has shown that a number of insecticides should have been banned long ago. For years, the Bayer Group has sought to silence the critics and pressure scientists into not publishing their findings.
    For more than two decades, experts have been warning of the negative effects of neonicotinoids, with a whole range of studies published on the subject. It would appear that the industry, aided by the authorities, managed to successfully delay any ban on these substances for years. Studies show that neonicotinoids not only kill pests, but also bees and other beneficial insects. Dutch toxicologist Henk Tennekes was among the first to recognize the problem. He believes neonicotinoids are the most toxic insecticides ever produced. He discovered a study carried out by Bayer itself, back in 1991, which found that a particular neonicotinoid had a negative effect on the nervous system of a fly species. These effects were said to be "irreversible”. Tennekes then confronted the company with his findings. He was taken aback by the response: "Bayer now claims” he says, "that the binding of critical receptors in the nervous system by neonicotinoids is reversible. So they’re contradicting the results of their own study. ... If they had considered what impact this substance has, they would have had to take it off the market."
    Scientists in France also analyzed mass bee deaths and likewise identified an insecticide made by Bayer as the culprit. Toxicologist Jean-Marc Bonmatin reveals how the company then sought to prevent the results from being published. Meanwhile, toxicologists in Japan discovered that neonicotinoids also harm other creatures, such as fish and river crabs. There too, Bayer sought to suppress publication.

    As a child (born 1956) I was living close to a huge Bayer plant in North-Rhine Westphalia. From an early age, I was suffering badly from chest infections and chronic bronchitis. Over the following years, I remember my parents talking about the nasty yellow cloud that was combing our district whenever the winds allowed. It was kind of a yellow-brown and badly smelling gas-like cloud which settled down while lingering for hours if not days.
    Then, I soon began to realise that my condition worsened dramatically whenever this cloud appeared. My condition never improved for as long as I was living in Germany until 1989.
    Once during that time, my father took me for a ride in his car and showed me the production site of Bayer. I must have been about 12 years of age back then. The stench that hit me became unbearable when we came close to the site while I realised, that the whole area surrounding that dreaded site appeared in a yellow-brown colour which was left from the fumes that were produced by those incredible huge chimneys. Indeed, I not only smelled but also tasted the toxicity of their deadly chemicals. In addition to my own experiences, I later researched that area and its surroundings (the city of Krefeld, near Düsseldorf) and found out that most of the population living in close vicinity of the Bayer plant suffered from Asthma and Bronchitis.
    In addition, the river Rhine, which Bayer was using as sewage, was so intoxicated that it was declared 'biological dead in the seventies for decades to come. Again, later research brought to light that Bayer was not the only killer of biological life in our heavily industrialised area as there are Hoechst, Henkel, Thyssen and Krupp to name but just a few. The colour of the river Rhine used to be dark brown-green, and I am convinced that anybody, who would have been brought in contact with its water would have suffered from intoxication.
    As my condition never improved, I eventually gave in to my English friends in 1988 and relocated to England in 1989. Within six months of my arrival in Lancashire, my bronchitis disappeared for good. The power, these companies have over the governments and regulating bodies is frightening. Their 'killing spree' for the sakes of profit is insane, and to this date, I cannot understand, that people do not stand up to that madness.

      Real investigative journalism should be the norm and not the exception. The human race, the public, has a right to expect this; but even more important is the content, the information, that Bayer and the production of Neonicotinoids are poisonous and "they" knew it, that should be the focus of everyone who watched this documentary.
      Since 1999 and early 2000's "they" knew how toxic it was. Killing bees, other insects and larger species. Alarm bells everywhere should be going off and all governments should be banning the use of Neonicotinoids, not just France.
      No more studies, just ban the poison. Screw Bayer and other companies and their profits. Any positive discoveries that "they" have made is outweighed by purposeful denial and manufacturing of the murderous chemicals that they themselves know are poisonous to the bee population, as well as other living creatures.
      Print a list of all known Neonicotinoids and check the labels on all household products you use to protect your pets, plants, and your household🐝🌻

    I've been raised by my grandparents who lived all their lives in a little village south Romania. I remember seeing, as a child, those red seeds all over the road when the combine harvesters were going to the fields. All adults warned the children not to play with those seeds. People used to leave their ducks and geese on the road, so they could go freely to the pond, and when the harvesting of corn would start, many birds died by poisoning with those seeds. After a while, I think they stopped using that insecticide, but nowadays they still use all kinds of chemicals and it shows in the ecosystem.

    It’s really a shame that the agriculture minister didn’t allowed the interview to happen, that meant she knew what’s happening with the pesticide. The German taxpayers are financing a ministry that doesn’t do absolutely nothing to avoid hazardous substances for the environment, living creatures, animals and humans. It’s no reason to have an agriculture ministry at all, the country most likely would be better without it. Thanks Deutschland Welle for informing us!

      It's much worse than a corrupt agriculture ministry. Sue and see. Govt. is an elite of self-serving politicians and bureaucrats. ALL GOVT. How do they get away with it? Easily, when the public gives them a monopoly on governing. There is no competing govt., therefore no accountability. Whose to blame? Who created and keeps the govt. alive? The people. They put up with a form of govt. that is coercive, violent, immoral and inhuman. Why? The people are told any other system would result in chaos, that govt. is somehow different from the private sector that has to compete for their support. And they believe this unsupported lie despite the massive evidence (war, injustice, corruption, theft, social unrest) to the contrary. The public is exploited like a slave and remains willfully blind to it. It's as if they are deluded by a mass superstition.

If, everyone would take a little time to find out what the whole government from left to right is doing only that would make a big difference, then everyone sending messages to the politicians will make them to be concerned with whatever they are doing. Now, the very best would be to have the Congress people elected no more than twice or three times at the most. When the politicians are sitting for too long they learn all the loopholes to get elected over and over again, and the worst of all by sitting for to long they’re easily targeted by large corporations and that’s the initial or first step into corruption.

I remember when i was a child the most of the cultures was made handly and allmost no chimecals were used, every kind of culture was highly profitable. In thous days there were a huge number of birds and insects that desapeared in a couple of decades. Like 20% to 30% of the population around had bees and honey was for free ( people used to give honey to people that had no bees). Then in 1986 Portugal went to EEC ( European comunity) and pesticides started to be used all around. Bees had totally desapeared ever since, many species of birds and insects too. The variety of cultures also desapeared, and big farmers only culture is now only corn and a few rice and tomatoes. I have my own biological farm but is hard to grow fruits and veggies because there are allmost no insects to pollinate the flowers. The damage done cannot be deleted, it Will last Forever. Is time for everybody to open their eyes and close every chemical factory. Life in our planet can't wait any longer.

    The underlying issue: Bayer acquired Monsanto (the agrichemical giant) a few years ago. Monsanto has assets such as a large phosphate mine in the USA. Phosphate is an extremely valuable and uncommon to find in large quantities, so this is how phosphate based detergents and pesticides began. Glyphosate and GMO crops are sold as a bundle to farmers? Monsanto developed that, and it's worse than traditional hybridized crops for yields and food safety. It forms a monocrop as well which is why bananas became all the same species, and a new fungus is threatening this species.
    Monsanto is bad for the world. Bayer is just sanitizing the image of the Agent Orange producer, GMO/glyphosate producer, etc. by fully incorporating former Monsanto assets directly into the Bayer umbrella. Germany, please

    Not just Bees, early in their lives both of my grandparents had background contact of glyphosate. (A daughter of a farmer, as a young man he worked in lumber mills) My grandmother died in her 30s, grandpa in his 50s both died of cancer, non hodgkins lymphoma. Glyphosate which has only recently been recognized to increase your chances of getting those illnesses.

    • @RootsandTendrils
      @RootsandTendrils 3 года назад +10

      I have done a great deal of research concerning the toxic mechanisms of Glyphosate Based Herbicides and follow closely the work of MIT scientist Stephanie Seneff who has informed me to a large extent. I am curious, you say your grandfather was exposed to glyphosate working in lumber mills, but really I don't see the connection there with Glyphosate exposure, is there something I am missing? Glyphosate is a huge danger, more prevalent in its use than neo-nicotines, and devastatingly toxic to the human organism. There is an immense failure going on concerning how pesticides are assessed for "Safety". Outdated approaches of "Toxicology" that allow for poisons to disrupt vital biochemical functions and poison the cells of mammals. The cells are the basic engines of life, disrupting their function will degrade the well being and vitality of the whole organism. Chronic exposure may also lead to severe disease, such as cells mis-replicating and becoming cancerous. Many pesticides including Glyphosate disrupt the energy producing biochemistry in the cells, the Mitochondria and the ATP cycle, impairing the organisms energy, vitality, and endurance. According to current assessment methods that is acceptable. Many agricultural pesticides also deplete cellular Glutathione, a key peptide the body makes for vital cell protective, cell regenerative and immune functions. Again acceptable to toxicology. There is also the important issue of Endocrine Disruption from Roundup and many other pesticides; essentially impairing the normal production and function of hormones in the body. This is also acceptable. As I said a flawed and highly imprudent approach to the safety assessment of pesticides, issues not discussed here or in DW's report on now Bayer's Roundup.

She looked at me with three heads. I mentioned that with a compromised immune system and fibromyalgia it has made a huge difference to my health and that I would welcome farmers to stop using glyphosates and neonicotinoids - I got a backhanded remark that farmers could not survive without them and that city folk just don't understand. It's true that the pressure of farming there is an expectation to produce as much as possible but at what cost? What will we do 20 - 30 years from now. How do farmers expect their crops to be pollinated in the years to come when all the bees are dying off. It's like cutting your nose off to spite your face.

    • @aaronhoy3410
      @aaronhoy3410 3 года назад +3

      @Spike
      I know I've been saying this for years. To me it seems like regulatory agencies create a system for when companies want to use a new product or formulation of something where the company will go to the agencies to request testing for these things, give the agency all the money necessary for the costs of the research, & then that agency will assign the research to a randomized selection of institutions/researchers in the field throughout the country/entity [or from within the region(s) that have the environmental conditions matching those the product is meant for.] The design of the study should be made by the agency & the institution that is assigned the research, after that happens if they feel they must do so then afterwords the agency can let the company review the design that is created with a process set up for how to resolve disputes between the company & what the agency + institution want done with the agency acting as intermediary between them so there is no contact or knowledge by the company of who is doing the research.
      Obviously there would be a long list of various aspects beyond this that would be necessary, but even if there wasn't a character limit for comments there really isn't a need to go into all that stuff here. This general outline is fine for laying out the framework here, I just want to mention this for you, or more likely other people who happen to read this, to know that I am fully aware of those things being necessary & I could go into if anyone thinks this sort of thing is not really possible to do or even that it would be too unfair to the companies [while I'm sure by not being an expert in this sort of area there are things I have not considered or thought of.] But, the current system where the companies are responsible for doing the research themselves, have the ability to just not publish results, exert influence over institutions doing research with the threat of not having them do research in the future & possibly even directly interact & influence the researchers doing the work that then has the agencies responsible for oversight of these companies be completely reliant upon a system of trust in that the companies send them all the data & the correct data to make their decisions on is absolutely ridiculous & unfit for purpose.

    You are doing a fantastic job DW. That is true social responsibility. The best thing with your work is you use scientific findings to back your arguments. Great journalism. Thanks a million. Please go on.

    Well done guys! Bees and other pollinating insects are indeed in grave danger. That is the worst possible news for humanity as they are so vital to us. It is not just chemicals either. Telephone masts affect their navigation, according to recent studies. We must do everything we can to encourage insects, even if it's just a couple of 'insect hotels' in our gardens!

      Awesome, right? It carried some illness.. Like good thing they don't have to swear the hypocritic oath right?
      Only do the best to "answer" to the investors, right?

    Bayer has been around for many moons and I remember in the 70s the commercials they advertised. The prices for their products is expensive and I buy generic or on sale.

    Our current way of life is pretty much borrowing everything we use from future generations by using it all up and thus never be able to pay it back. Wonderful.

    Before seeding this year lots of bees and many birds, a week into seeding and no bees around and the birds no longer sing in the mornings. Seed treatment and air seeders.
