Came back for a visit after twenty years away,so sad how many pubs have gone,I now know why the kids of today use internet dating because you'll never find a boyfriend or girlfriend down the pub anymore.Great shots of the ArtDeco electricity building before they knocked it down to build the Arndale.I'm a Langley lad in my sixties, great piece, great memories, thank you.

This is excellent and nostalgic for those of us who lived in Middleton from birth. I spent 25 years there and some of the photos are exactly as I remember it, with the Palace, Duckworth's the grocers and the Electricity Showrooms. Interestingly, it had hardly changed at all from the very old photos to my childhood, 60 years ago. Yes I suppose that's old but I mean very very old photos.. Now, I wouldn't recognise any of it except the Albany Mill, which set on fire in the 50s. Fortunately, the fire station was either next door to, or under, the Mill.

Thanks Ian great video but sad to see my beautiful town ruined by an uncaring council and supermarket chain. Needs restoring to its former glory especially central gardens.

Great video, brought back memories. I remember the swimming pool but Can't quite place where it was located. Was it where the Tesco petrol station is now? Also wasn't there a sports centre next to it?

I've only just moved to Middleton and one thing I've noted apart from the stunning buildings dating well over a hundred plus years old is, the military history surrounding the town. The town has for decades been rich source of manpower for HM Forces. One of the pubs was even run by a VC holder who's family still reside in Middleton and proudly display the VC on Remembrance Day. St Leonard Middleton Parish Church has a cemetery that is littered with dead from both World Wars. Middleton should be proud of its rich military history. I find it strange that the local council seem to spend more on Rochdale itself, whereas Middleton and Heywood seem to receive less. Middleton Town centre is large enough to accommodate a more cosmopolitan/European feel. Its missing good quality restaurants. It needs a wide selection of shops, big corporates should be encouraged to open or at least offer local business owners better terms to open and run a local business so that not every second shop is either a charity shop, café or pound type shop. Lastly, law and order. There is a very small sub section of the community that seem to try and ruin it for everyone else whether its to do with drink, drugs or just plain antisocial behaviour. Regardless if its kids, youths or adults, a more robust approach to stamp this out should be observed. Warnings don't work. Kicking them out of social accommodation is a start. Banning them from areas is another.
