    Some people in the comments are confused why Orel’s parents throw him a birthday party if they’re so horrible.
    There’s two answers. One, they know that *not* throwing a party for Orel will make them look bad. And two, abusive parents can still love their kids. Ever have someone tell you “I don’t want to do this” before they hit you? They’ve been taught that they need to parent through violence and control, which overrides any affection they might have had for their kids.

    • @elleofhearts8471
      @elleofhearts8471 10 месяцев назад +67

      also notice coach stopframe is there. the birthday party couldve been an excuse for Clay to see coach Stopframe openly without being suspicious. Some parents really do put in a lot of effort for selfish reasons.

    • @randompromises1038

      I feel like people tend to forget that abusers aren't 100% abusive all of the time. The way they tend to entrap their victims by being nice at first and treating them well enough, and slowly reveal their true colors in subtle small dosages. The birthday party is probably a lovebombing attempt, as in "see? I _do_ love you! So you can't say I'm a bad parent to you or I wouldn't do this for you."

    • @rainberry2159
      @rainberry2159 3 месяца назад +9

      I think the second one is the answer- a lot of parents are emotionally and physically abusive but still “love” or feel affection for their children. I think it’s fair to say their parents are an extension of the society they live in. This is the only thought process they know. They do not know or view love in the same way we do

      I watched the episode after that. Where you see Clay drinking with a pastor, cop, and a doctor. Like over 10 times just for fun on my solo drinking parties. Watching the scene over 10 times, the dad or "Clay" makes a very good point. As a married man you do "sacrifice" a lot of things. I know because I'm still single and waiting to be taken to experience this "sacrifice" myself. One thing I noticed in REAL LIFE between my single life (so unlucky to get a girlfriend) and the majority who got lucky with a wife. I notice they don't do what I do. Play video games, watch tv or movies ANYTIME THEY WANT, or even go out, get wasted, and party. In a way, I feel bad for them a bit. Yeah they get to enjoy and nice p...n t....g. But they can't really "party" at all. Because they got wife and kids. Single guys don't give a f because they do NOT have a wife and kids to "have a game face on"

      The thing is, while Clay IS right about his observations of Potterswheel, Putty, and Papermouth are actually spot on (Not TOO sure about Potterswheel, but he did give Bloberta a deathly amount of opioids. Florence was extremely tired of Roger, and Rod(rick?) does feed off the desperation of women.) Clay is SO FUCKING WRONG about everything he said about himself.

    It's so accurate how the Figarelli's kids reenacted the fight scene between their parent bc my siblings and I used to do that as well. When your parents fight often, you learn that it's normal and even make a joke of it sometimes. But mostly you learn to copy them because that's just what you're supposed to do. I had the internet as a kid so I learned pretty quick how to actually talk to people and how toxic my parents are, but the scene does pretty accurately display how me and my siblings used to talk and fight with each other, mostly just doing and saying what my parents would do and say. Things like "You're lazy" and "I don't trust you!".

      That’s rough. My parents had their fights, or disagreements, more like, but they never abused each other. i personally believe one of the worst things ever is becoming like your parents. no one exactly wants to turn out how your parents are, it's a few people's worse nightmares. if you see them as monsters or horrible people, you should never have to follow in their path.

      Can't relate. Opposite problem. If I turned out exactly like either one of them I'd be faring a lot better in life and in general, I think. Although if I had to go back and redo some things... Some things I wouldn't undo. I'm still my own person. But if I'm being truly humble... They're simply much better people overall.

      Someone had to say it. I was looking at some (mostly) uninteresting notes I took as a teenager the other week - one that stood out was "I'm afraid I'm turning into my dad, but not a sore loser...With all due respect." My stance on that hasn't changed. I love my parents as much as anyone, but they definitely had their demons. A lot of them.

It's well established in later episodes he hates being a W.A.S.P. and having to live up to the fundamental life style of it. Now he easily could just divorce his wife and leave to greener pastures but he refuses to do so because he cares about his image to much and doesn't wanna look "Bad".

    Wow I gotta say after finishing the series and understanding how much of a narcissist clay grew up as, and the calamity it caused after, then his own fathers abuse which he was too full of himself to realize wasnt love, this show was so brilliantly structured, he grew up infantilized and now that shapey is on that similar path his detest grows, he already hates him and bloberta for the child not even being his, and now this constant reminder of his past, I believe when he kicked the lamp he was subconsciously trying to cause a domino effect to injure shapey, also "I cant believe I gave you the privilege of satisfying me every night" is hard hitting in its narcissism, but also its exposure of clays need to be viewed as a figurehead, even reiterating to himself in solitude, hes got the whole town so wrapped in his delusion of a idealistic outdated and perverse society that broke him as much as he sets out to break Orel

    If I witnessed those two fighting over standing v. sitting in a bar in real life, it would quickly turn into a 2-on-1 beat down; sitting > standing any day, and I'm not scared to go to jail OR the hospital to prove it. SITTING!!!
