I love how McEnroe is staying back on the baseline so much in this match. I know he's known for his volleying, but I really like watching his groundstrokes from the baseline. He looks so effortless and elegant and he's always very tactical with his shots! He was an absolute artist!
I honestly don't know why his groundstrokes techniques aren't taught. They are short, efficient. Very little room to mis-hit the ball. For most club players I think its the way to go.
Mats was hung over after celebrating day before. When this match was played, Sweden had already won the Davis Cup 3-0. This is one of the two meaningless Sunday singles matches. Safe to say that Mats didn't really care if he won or lost.
They talk so much about the clay surface as an advantage for the Swedes. Of course it was .Wilander and Sundstrøm were experts on clay.McEnroe had problem in the 1982 Davis cup quarter final beating Wilander it took 6 hours and 22 minuts and this was in the USA. Wilander became a more and more better all around player.

Actually when you look at it Mats groundstrokes aren't overly loopy either.
I miss the days of contrasting styles. Todays tennis is all first strike, big serve big forehand. Whoever is more on that day wins

Could not agree more, tennis is so dull now. I don't know how anyone watches it.
You should see the wear on the Wimbledon Grass today compared to the 1980s and 1990s.
Very different styles of play.
