I took my G9M2 to India for two weeks last week. The temperature went up to 52.8 degrees C according to the news. I took video both with my iPhone13 promax. iPhone stopped recording when G9M2 recorded as much as I needed. I think the cooling fan is not necessary for Panasonic bodies. If it wasn’t for the auto focus I would have took my GH6 though. Still I think it is better having a fan even if you don’t use it. Thanks for the great video.
wow that's insane heat! 52.8! Glad the camera worked in that scenario. I had it perform well up to 40c while in Perth and couldn't imagine a place that hot. Thanks again for the comments :)
Accurate, fan keeps temps under tight control and makes everything inside last longer. Whether a G9II will ever fail from thermal fatigue I don't know, buf my GF1 did eventually fail (probablynotthermal fatigue), long since obsolete when it did though. Also GF1 was made in Japan.
I definitely had my g9ii overheat filming a soccer match. It was probably 65f but direct sun. Lasted about 70 minutes. I was stopping and stopping as ball went in and out of play
i dont think most people who bought the G9II are gonna have buyer's remorse.. it seems perfectly fine for most users.. especially with the updated autofocus
I have the g9m2 and gh6 No remorse but I am considering getting rid of the gh6 for the gh7 for the unlimited recording but got a good deal with the s5m2
Great breakdown! For me, I'm really happy with my g9ii. As cool as the GH7 features are (they really are!) I think for my needs the g9ii is more than enough. That said, if I was still doing wedding films full time and client work, I'd be buying like 3 GH7's to run my business with exclusively. Ridiculous spec for the price! Long live Micro four thirds ☺️📷
The GH7 has a number of features over the G9-II: CFExpress, RAW-internal, the streaming functions from the GH5-II, the tilt/flip-screen, the fan, the 32bit sound option, Arri-Log. I don't need this for what I'm doing, so I can easily stay with the G9-II. What I miss a little bit is the CFExpress, the screen and the C1-C4 I used on the GH6 a lot. This one more C-setting directly on the wheel is worth a lot for me. But overall the G9-II is better for me because of the weight and size advantage.
The GH6/7 also have a lock lever. I have used this before when I had someone who wanted to be a second shooter, but didn't know enough to do much more than frame and press the button.
I am using G9 M2 for my wildlife videos here in India - am satisfied with the performance, i was in a confusion whether to replace my G9 M2 with GH7 but after seeing this video i think i need not to change the camera 😊 thanks for the video
Thanks for the info! Yeah for sure the G9II is the right choice for what you’re doing there’s no need to spend more money to get essentially the same results. 😀👍
I received my g9 ii on June 1 and then the gh7 was announced haha. I was ready to die of regret and then when I saw what the gh7 actually is, the g9 ii is much more in line with what I want. Extremely small and compact and has pretty much every feature the gh7 has and all of the features that I wanted. For me, the g9 ii is the proper successor to the gh5.
I have a G9 and a G90. I find I use the G90 more often for what I do because of the smaller size and weight which I prefer for hiking, cycling, travel. So I'm holding out for next generation of G80/G90 camera with the improved autofocus rather than going for either G9ii or GH7. 🙂
What's funny is that I decided on the G9 II a couple months ago after a few of your videos about it and I don't have buyers remorse. The G9II serves a different purpose than the GH series. It sits in my tool bag as my stills and run and gun video camera, where as the GH6 is the principal video camera for me (hopefully to be replaced with a GH7).
As a indie filmmaker who will mostly use 4k 24p, my G9II will do the job. I traded in my Gh6 for $1,000 and got the extra $500 trade in from Lumix to buy the G9II. No remorse here. If they offer that $500 again I would think about the GH7, but the G9II does the job.
Given the choice, and for a similar price, I'd pick the GH7. However... 1) When I had my GH6, I used ProPres less than 1% of the time, and I never really needed. Davinci Resolve does not accept ProRes RAW. 2) The screen is better, but not a deal breaker. 3) The fan is good to have, but my G9ii has never overheated for me 4) I am unlikely to buy another XLR interface -I rarely use the one I have 5) I paid £1440 for the G9ii new, and the GH7 is £2000. That's 39% more money.
i dont think most people who bought the G9II are gonna have buyer's remorse.. it seems perfectly fine for most users.. especially with the updated autofocus
My g9ii overheats shooting longer interviews, and at first I was super disappointed. Then I bought an AC adapter with a dummy battery, and it solved the problem outright.
The big differentiator for me, also makes the GH7 even heavier, and more expensive, is the 32 bit float audio, which requires the new XLR unit. According to Panasonic information that unit is only compatible with the GH7. I don't know if there is a hardware limitation that means the G9 II cannot ever use the new unit, or if it is just a marketing decision, but for now it seems, the G9 II will not be getting that audio upgrade, and for many people, myself included, it will be the audio that is the deciding factor. I will have to look closer at the slow motion issue, because slow motion is important to me, but I suspect that in practice the G9 II advantage is relatively small. I have had a savings account named G9 II for a few months now, but I have already renamed it GH7. I have no intention of selling my G9, GH5 II, and GH5s, as they are fabulous cameras that still serve me well, and mean it doesn't matter if it takes two or three years before I can finally get the GH7, but my trusty G9, I suspect, will remain my smaller travel stills shooter. I love that camera to death, and the GH5 II is no slouch either. But with the GH7, just like the GH4 in its day, just hits it for a six. It is a slam dunk home run of a camera, it will bring a wave of buyers back to the format, and that is good for both Panny boy and Olympus. I want to see Olympus get a few lens sales, because I love my Olympus lenses, and so have a vested interest in seeing the company thriving again. There is an Olympus 90mm Macro and a 75mm f1.8 somewhere in my purchasing future. And from Lumix I have the Leica 9mm f1.7, and just maybe, one day, the 10-25 and 25-50mm f1.7 zooms on my wish list. The MFT dilemma is that there is so much MFT goodness to buy, and so little money to spread around.
Being a photography focused camera person, I am very happy with the G9M2, so much that I own two G9M2 bodies, so that I can have two different lenses available without needing to change lenses in the field. The G9M2 has way more video capabilities that I need, at present, or even know how to use to best advantage. If I were aiming to be video focused, I'd buy the GH7 in a heartbeat.
Thanks. This comparison is what i was looking for. From G9, i moved to S5, 2 years back. As a traveller, I soon realised that S5 doesnt like too much movement due to its big sensor. Stabilisation wasn't as good as i had in my G9. But G9 gave me a lot of AF issues and ruined many shots so was avoiding using it. I am moving to G9ii now. Thanks for the review.
Every reason given to buy the GH7 over the G9II given was video video video... you don't need 12 mins to tell this - short n sharp. Lots of content creators who invest in the the Panny system are video geared creators... I get that. Just a pity there are not content creators out there that are Panny/Photograph geeky nerds
Of course the differences are video, that's what the GH7 does best. 12 minutes of useful information for people interested in either for video/hybrid work.
I am so grateful for your video content. I bought the G9II after watching your review, and I am so glad I did. I already own the GH5 and have used Lumix for my ranch/farm video work since the GH3. I only had to think about where 99% of my video work ends up to seal the deal for the G9II. My videos end up on online real estate websites and a link to the hosted video is sent to prospective buyers who ask for information. My videos aren’t playing at Regal Cinemas. 1080p is perfectly acceptable for most of what I do but I find myself shooting in 4K 30p most of the time just because I can. I get a kick out of the “real estate videos” that sellers pay $20K for that include actors, the shot of the Ferrari going up the drive, etc. Those are really nice videos for luxury properties but almost all of them fail to do the one thing prospective buyers want the video to do: provide information that will help them determine whether or not the prospect wants to view the property or not. Thanks again for your great content!
@@GeekyNerdyTechy what can be done better than you do already in your niche? You do the best camera comparisons and spec detailing atleast for the lumix cameras. Gerald Undone did a great video talking about the dynamic range test etc. but still wasn't as detailed of a spec to spec video. This is why you are awesome to me!
I own a G9II and GH6. It’s nice to have a dedicated photo-centric camera like the G9II and leave the video-centric camera at home. I plan to trade up my GH6 for a GH7 in the coming months
I rented the G9 ll to try it out and did not like the build quality vs the GH6 and it did not balance well with the 100-400 lens. I held off with hopes that the GH7 would release at some point and glad I did. And I did not like the camera strap loops on it either. I prefer the protruding loops as on the G9 and GH6. Glad they kept that on the GH7. Picky, yes, but those little things mean a lot when being used a ton. My GH7 is on order! Could you show how quickly the GH7 turns on? I know the GH6 takes a bit. As a wildlife enthusiast, those seconds matter. Great video!
Underrated point. Wildlife Photography or heavy lenses in general benefit from a thicker camera body. Also Underrated is the flip up screen which is very useful for low shots without the screen hanging off to the side.
Watched this video like 3 times lol I love my g9ii, looking to replace my gh6 so I had preordered the gh7. Decided it was too much camera for how I use mft and so I cancelled my preorder and just ordered a used g9ii from MPB. I’m happy with my choice. Thanks for this video man!
I was dying to buy the G9-II but I SWORE a couple of years ago to never, EVER buy any future camera that does not have a cooling fan. In other words, no fan no buy....no matter how many features it has. I'm soooooo damn GLAD that I waited for the GH7. I'm selling my GH6 and I have already ordered the GH7. The temptation for the G9-II was strong but I feel 100% justified in waiting. I would have had to sell two cameras instead of one.
Oh hello Cliff. Nice to see you here. I’m actually renting a GH6 for my Florida trip. Very excited to try it out. If I like it, I’ll probably end up buying one! I was also looking at the G9II, but the base vlog iso of 500 seems too low for low-light use, plus as you mentioned, the lack of a fan is also a let down for people who shoot longer videos…
The G9ii can do 300 FPS, only in LongGOP. I admit I forgot the differences between S&Q, VFR, and HFR, but I think there were some practical ones as well. One of the main advantages of the GH7 (and GH6) I think is the CFe slot as well. You sure that ARRI LogC2 is coming to the G9ii?
According to the website Camera Decision(Can't Confirm), there are a couple of noteable photo differences between G9ii and GH7. No Focus Stacking or Post Focus mode on GH7. However you can take still pictures while recording on GH7 but not on G9ii. Thought I'd bring it up since I haven't seen anyone mention it. Maybe this can be confirmed or denied by people that have or had the preproduction camera.
Don’t you think ergonomics (extra rec button, more Custom settings, screen hinge mechanism), CFexpress card slot and 32-bit audio options is good reason to upgrade?
I have found the G9ii stabilisation hard to get used to, maybe I have it on the wrong settings, and when filming 4K on a sunny day have found it’s the only camera in my squad to come up with a over heating warning
Friend, you told me about manual focus on the GH5S, where you could extend the focus frame. Has this been returned to the GH6 and newer models? And I heard that Panasonic can remember 3 focus points on video, how can I use this?
Hello! I would like to ask if this g9ii is good for sports photography? How fast is the AI SERVO? Is it worth replacing the Canon 7d mark ii?? Thanks for your reply!!
Yeah honestly it is an interesting situation here. The GH7 has those pro video features like prores raw internal but the only REAL thing pulling me towards it is that Arri Log support! I think the G9 ii is still the best all rounder for most people and I hope Panasonic makes a super small compact Micro 4/3 body soon too
Well said mate! I agree, the G9II now has a good frame of reference from the GH7, which is why now - it might actually be the better choice for a lot of folks. Agreed about the smaller body type, it needs to happen at some point this year or Panasonic are blind to the requests.
Back in the days I got the GX8 and later the GH5. THERE the smaller GX8 was way worse in shoothing quality. Amazing that the G9II is so good now in comparison to the GH7. I kinda left MFT and GH5 because of the Focus. Went to sony A7c. Now the G9II at a good price could re-live my MFT lens usage - especially for quick vlogs and there having a great stab and focus. thanks for your video and greets from Austria
Hi brother Shane. I am new to camera. I dont have any experience about the camera .between gh 7 and gh9 which one you recommend brother?thank you God bless you all.
Since the GH7 is video focussed, I assume it DOESN'T have the pre-burst mode that the G9 II does? Because that's an asbolute must for me (if I'm deciding between two cameras only one of which has it). Just the idea that you can react to something after it happens and still get the shot is a dream come true.
No problems. S&Q mode is a lot easier to work with. You can shoot 120p with AF on the GH7, but it's in the main recording menu option. VFR Mode locks it back to manual focus for some reason.
I was a g9 shooter that didn’t lust after the gh5 and the tradition continues now that I have the g9ii… I hope compatibility with the 32 bit adapter is added through firmware, but have a feeling it will cause I will help sell more adapters. I guess if I’m honest, I wish the flip up screen could be added through firmware. lol.
The G9II has also a battery grip so more suited to photographers, hybrid shooters and also cheaper. The GH7 is more for the video centric shooter. What I don’t like is hearing that Lumix is discontinuing the GH6 which was selling for a lower price then the G9II. So there is no camera on m43 at that price point.
Agreed. They should keep the GH6 going at a better price and maybe kill off the GH5II if they have to do something like that. You're right. The current price of the GH6 is perfect for what it offers.
Loving my G9ii plus S5iiX combination for two camera videos. My G9ii is also a backup to an OM-1 for stills with my collection of Olympus long Pro lenses. I don't use the ProRes codecs so that is not a reason for me to get a GH7. I do like the hinged articulating screen and the fan, but I haven't had any overheating problems yet the way I use my G9ii. When I do (hour long videos in direct sunlight in up to 40C heat), I will throw a white tee shirt over the camera and see if that is enough, that's all it took to keep my OM-1 going in the same service, same conditions. Thanks for the excellent video comparing the two options. No buyers remorse here, and I may get a GH7 eventually myself, but no hurry and no current need. Great move by Panasonic/Lumix to produce the GH7!
I will definitely be draping a white tee shirt over my G9ii when in direct sunlight in the summer--finally got it to overheat this week, as expected. For now, I've moved my S5iiX to the sunny position and the G9ii to the shaded position for my two camera setup and that works great for hour long clips. I'll stick with the G9ii if all it takes is a tee shirt to keep it from shutting down when I need to use it in the sun on a tripod for an hour or two. I'll decide in August, most likely.
I'm wary of fan less cameras. I own the A74 and I watched many reviews saying it wouldn't over heat and it has overheated in crucial moments but like your friend said I use a hdmi monitor never realized it effects. If your doing paid work I wouldn't recommend a fanless camera. It's hard to predict under what circumstances will cause it to overheat. If you're running unmanned cameras or doing a live event like a wedding it's not something additionally you want to worry about.
Great video. I am still sitting tight with my Old Olympus OM 1 MKii and MKiii. I do mostly photography and seek the most indestructible body and lenses that will stand up to severe heat, cold, and wet. I carry a camera in Alaska where it reaches -40 and in South East Asia where the temp can be in the upper 90s with typhoon water trauma. In order of weakness I have damaged and destroyed my Sonys, Canon’s, Nikon’s and haven’t dared test my Leicas in harshness. My old Olympus cameras and lenses have stood most strong and I haven’t felt the need to move over to the OM systems. Seems to me that Panasonic has been riding the wave of photographic evolution. There is nothing that catches my eye more than Leica glass. OM glass is good, but not a pretty as Leica.
I love how some RUclipsrs, names wont be mentioned, worship the full frame stating its the best, yet here we are, shooting TV shows on TV camera with a 2/3 sensor. Kinda funny, its 4k and we use a lot of lighting even outside with massive reflectors and mood lights. Just like, uh, Hollywood does with their Arri Alexa, at the end of the day, the set and location matters vastly more than a camera does for pro productions. Cameras have been so capable for such a long time I feel sorry for manufacturers, what are they gonna improve LOL? Each new generation is just gonna be more and more expensive because of all the insane video features they need to cram in there to satisfy the spec nerds.
I know this feature is not new to GH7 but I prefer CFexpress over SD card. It has faster write/read speeds, and also supports S.M.A.R.T feature. With S.M.A.R.T feature, you can find out percent of wear of the CFexpress card using software such as DiskInfo64. As you know, flash storage such as CFexpress does not last forever so this tool allows me to find out when to replace the storage card. In addition, GH7 has flip up (in addition to flip out) display screen. This feature is handy for quick run-and-gun video shoots. When display is flip-up, it disables proximity sensor (for auto switch between EVF & main display) which comes in handy when I'm in a hurry rather than tapping the EVF button 3-times.
One more thing about 4K 120fps slow motion on the GH7. I shoot all the time at 4K 120fps with auto focus on my GH6 which I assume is the same on GH7. There is no need to record using VFR at 4K 120fps since you mentioned there is no auto-focus and no audio. Just set camera to record at 4K 120fps in regular mode that records audio and with continuous auto focus then slow it down in post.
he is right i bought the g9m2 because i was nedded pic first but the g9m2 have all video i need right now so the g9m2 is my new real baby gh7 looks good i wonder about the battary how long is takes on gh7 ?
Ive said for a while the G9ii seems more like the GH5mkiii we talked about a while back than a G9ii just in terms of its place in the lineup in some ways.
I would have felt buyer's remorse if I had bought the G9ii before the GH7 for sure. But, since I'm still shooting with my Sony FX30, I'm in good shape. But, the new features of the GH7 are fantastic for filmmakers. Personally, I don't shoot slow motion hardly if ever. But, the internal raw, the 32-bit audio, the LUMIX Lab app, and of course newly added PDAF, the GH7 is definitely a no-brainer. And I've wanted to go back to Panasonic for its skin tones. Sony always requires work on the skin tones more often than not. I'm not ready to jump to LUMIX, yet. But, when I am, the GH7 is in my sights.
Love the G9 mk2 but wish it had autofocus at 240-300fps. One correction, the G9 mk2 is able to achieve 300fps in HD. If your camera only say 240fps, you need to go to "Image Quality 1", go to "synchro scan" and turn it off. Then go back to "Slow & Quick" setting and it should now say 300fps.
I own the G9ii and I shot several times slo-mo 300 fps, 1080p, no problem, excellent results. what's frustrating about my G9ii is that the montor often shows the preview/image upside down when it's tilted out. I have to take the batteri out and in several times before it correct itself...and that's kind of frustrating.
I’m photo first shooter, who is trying to get into video. No remorse getting the G9ii when I did. I actually prefer the smaller GX/GM bodies, but having a larger body for longer tele lenses or when using OCF is really nice ergonomically. Still any new m43 camera is a good thing, now just give us a smaller body!
I have GH6 and GH5S as well as two Ninja's so can record ProRes or ProRes RAW from both of them. Would be nice to have 32bit float audio in the video file so no sync afterwards but have a Zoom F3 now so that is covered. I like features of both and for any new camera would want something better. Not sure the GH7 offers much more than I already have now. Have thought of upgrading the GH5S to the S5IIX better low light , maybe, but since I shoot 60P the full frame of S5IiX is now an APS-C camera !!. Don't now use continuous AF so not likely to change with what I shoot. Will see what LUMIX do for the S1H update.
Excellent video as always. I own 5 gh6 cameras and just purchased the RS4Pro and Lidar pro to use for my main camera. I think I will wait for the GH8. Do you think the GH7 stabilization is close to a gimbal?
Thank you very much for the work and 2 important questions: 1° Do you think that the G9 MKII can last 5H/6H in 4K 50p non-stop (sports show) especially with an external power supply and at a temperature below 26° maximum? 2° What power supply should we use with the DMW-DCC18 GH7 coupler if we want to record on an SSD with the GH7..? Nobody talks about it And the G9MKII has a grip to double the autonomy, not GH7.. you didn't say it here. Also the G9 MKII does not need CFexpress and therefore has 2 identical SD slots = less expensive Thank you for your reply
One of the features of the GH7 I’m really attracted to is the CF Express slot. I have a GH6 and initially I tried an external hard drive to capture video. This worked fine; however, I needed to power the camera with the USB port as I shoot for long periods of time. Now I use a 2 TB card which allows me to record over 3 hours in ProRes 5.7 K. I also record 4K on my Ninja V. This gives me a backup and will allow me to punch in even more.
I have a G9 and a bunch (ten) of very good MFT lenses. I have a 5DIII when I need FF DOF for stills. I bought a lumix 50mm f1.8 lens because I thought I’d buy a S5II or S5II next. I’m an enthusiast not a pro. What are then things that make you think, when filing with your G9II that you wish you had your FF S5IIX and vice versa? Is it for example just low light?
Does the GH7 have the pre burst mode? My GH6 doesn't have it but my G7 did. I miss it on the GH6 and I miss the 2x/4x digital zoom. Ex tele is nice but the drop in megapixel is unfortunate. 90 pct of my shots are still images with some 30 to 60 second video clips of wildlife. Can't decide which is a better upgrade for me g9II or GH7.
GH line and G line are for separate purposes, so the photo burst modes will primarily be on the G line, video features will primarily be on the GH line :). If you're more into photography then stick with the G line, not GH line would be my advice. Best wishes.
Thanks. It's a tough call honestly. Where I shoot it's hot, like 105 to 110f and I've overheated my GH6. I also have a bunch of CFxpress cards @@iangrant3615
If I'm not wrong, you only can shoot raw to an ssd. The g9ii can do the same. (to a ninja) And nobody has reported heating issues with the g9ii. (except for continuous 120p). So besides he 32 bit (I'd prefer an external recorder for that)... what's the main reason to buy the gh7?
I made a video about it overheating, but it's very infrequent. Most people will only get the camera to overheat if they are using it in specific situations.
@@GeekyNerdyTechyyes, i saw it. It could even took direct summer sun if it was not right into the back of the camera. So, i don't see the difference between them both. Same codecs, same resolutions, same sensor... Why exactly should one spend the extra 700 dollars? (1200 with the extra sound gadget that allows 32 bit)
i wish they'd do fewer models and focus on refinement with all the features instead of crippling every segment with "almost-perfect" and forcing upgrades just to have a specific function. like 3 form factors and a pro and budget line would be perfect. The market is too crowded with junk. Its also ridiculous that its $1000 more than an S5iiX...and just as heavy. The whole pont of MFT is weight saving, otherwise just get FF.
Hi, thanks for the video. I've had the G9M2 for half a year now and I'm satisfied. I previously owned a GH5M2. Sometimes I make videos for clients, but it's more of a hobby. I spend a lot of time filming my family. For me, weight, consistency and, above all, excellent automatic focusing are important, because there is often no time to prepare shots in advance or repeat them. I don't even need a long shoot with cooling. So I'm happy with my camera G9M2 and I don't need to switch (honestly, I couldn't do it at home either :)
Excellent video! you were very objective and insightful. Simple question: if budget is important, and if I need the maximum resolution at 60 fps to take a vertical crop out of a horizontal set up ( can nit change gimbal), do they make a difference between the G9ii vs GH7? Thanks in advance for your point of view.
The image quality between the G9II and GH7 is basically identical to the eye test. I can't see a difference between them. You can shoot at 4.4k in open gate (full readout) or 5.7k 30p at full resolution.
Hey Shane, is it hypocritical to think Lumix does a firmware update auto detect features like the GH7? I’ll take my G9ii at this point as I shoot mainly still very little video.
Both of these cameras are almost the same internally, and both are their current top-of-the-line for m43 I am almost positive we'll see an update for it at some point. They did the same thing with their Full Frame cameras and updated them with the G9II autofocus, so it's bound to happen. (hopefully).
I have the GH5 and been shooting on that since 2018. Both shooting commercials, RUclips videos and musical productions. I am looking for a new camera and I can’t decide. I want more depth of field than I get with GH5, perfect auto focus, perfect for video and good for pictures. Would you go with Lumix or Sony? And which model?
@@GeekyNerdyTechy yeah they really marketed it as a "crash cam" to use on sets that use an alexa, as oppose to shoot in LogC with the cam on it's own. It's helpful on set for monitoring. Thats why the GH6 is getting it because they can buy used GH6 cameras and put it through its paces
They are both great. Right now, the GH7 has a more advanced AF tracking/detection system, but I think at some point they'll be both utilizing the same modes via updates.
You can shoot 4K120p on either camera in the regular menu with sound. On the G9II, the S&Q mode has PDAF where as the VFR on the GH7 is manual focus only.
Hmmmmm, I thimk I still want the float audio and AF modes. Do you know if float audio goes into MP4 and MOV files? I doubt the overheating would be an issue. I'm never going to shoot raw video of any kind, most likely. Interestingly it has 2x SD which suits me. Guessing no external SSD thiugh? Not much cheaper than the full monty camera, so only the size/weight/cost vs features will decide.
Do you have any opinion on something I keep hearing about - that the OG, non-PDAF sensor is just 'better'? People who love the GH6, S5, etc., seem to love those over the new versions.
I heard that a bit in the comments. I think PDAF uses pixels, but after comparing the S5II and S5 together, the one that's always in focus looks better, so I sold my S5 cameras off. I don't see any disadvantage to the PDAF, but that's just me. I'm sure other have had that experience or they think they've seen it.
G9 ii is a fabulous camera, I've never had overheating problems with it. If you already have one like I do, I really don't see the need in buying the GH7, but that obviously comes down to personal needs. I don't do weddings or 1 hour slow motion shootings. Bottom line is, MFT rocks!!
I think the G9II is a great B-Cam to the GH7 for a hybrid shooter. sometimes grabbing a dedicated stills cam for photos and light video work is preferable to a GH which might be overkill in some scenarios.
Very HAPPY Panasonic Customer! Been in the GH series since GH4. I loved my GH5 as my outdoor workhorse however as grown old today. Moved into the FF Panasonic S series 3 years ago and continued with building my FF system. Saying that, I totally agree Shane! LOVE my MFT highend Glass!! MUCH smaller, lighter, and less expensive. With twice the focal distance taking up half the space. Finally with Panasonic coming out with the G9II with PDAF and larger sensor, it's the PERFECT camera for my workflow in both IMAGE and FOOTAGE qualities that gives me the ability to carry more goodies up a mountain.
What do you think about the colours? I heard some people missing the GH6 colours. The GH7 and G9ii are matching fine, right? But to the S5(X)ii these are different? What would be a pity as lot of people would like use one of the latest MFTs in combination with the FF S5(X)ii. Guess Jordan from peta pixels brought that up.
That's great to know about the AF in high frame rate shooting. I'm getting into plane spotting and shooting slow motion landing videos at the airport. My current E-M1 III only does 1080p/120 with manual focus and no audio, so when I'm ready to upgrade I know the G9 II is a better fit for that application. Thanks!
I have a G9 mk1 and it's perfectly fine for my needs. I love it! I don't even see a reason to upgrade to a mk2 at all. If I was going to 'upgrade', then it would be to the S1 full frame, but that would be a choice not necessity.
My g9ii overheated twice today and I had only been filming outside for about an hour in 84 degree heat and this was the first time I used it. . I was also recording to a Ninja V which I thought would take some pressure off the G9ii. I had no intention of buying the GH7 but The G9ii cannot be used as a professional video camera if it overheats outdoors like I experienced today. I can film on my GH5S outdoors in 90+ degrees for hours without stopping, battery after battery, and it has never overheated. and I can imagine the GH7 would be the same. After today I can see that the G9ii is primarily a photo camera and cannot be used in a professional capacity for video.
The only time I had mine overheat was direct sunlight in Summer. That said, it survived fine on a 40c day in Perth on an overcast day. I think the direct sunlight hitting the back of the camera makes it cook, especially if there's no wind. ruclips.net/video/iDU7EY0-KyI/видео.html
@@GeekyNerdyTechy I think you're right. I was in direct sunlight while I was using it. Thanks for all your Panasonic videos, by the way. They are my favorite reviews and tutorials to watch about the cameras I own, or am thinking of owning and you do a really great job.
Last october, I sold my GH5 II to get a G9 II. It's IBIS is incredible and now AFC is very good. So the only thing I was looking for when the GH7 announceme't was made is Internal ND Filters... So I think I'll probably keep my current camera until GH8 offers it
Hi, I want to upgrade my G9 to the mark II and I absolutely need flawless automatic photo transfer to phone / tablet which I can't figure out with the Mk1. I can't find anywhere if this camera can do it? My dad has a nikon Z something that does it perfectly well and I need this feature for work. Apparently the S9 does it too but I want a grip on my camera and don't want to change the MFT lenses I already have. ( 12-60 ,42.5 and 100-300 ) TLDR : does the G9 II have good automatic wireless automatic photo transfer to phone / computer? Thanks for the review now I know I don't need the GH7 at least :) Edit : maybe I should keep the G9mk1 and buy the S9 specifically for my work..?
Actually after seeing this… probably I ll of for g9 II. The price difference now is around 500 euro which u can’t call it no big deal. Seeing the prices for 1tb CF express 2 (more than 300 ) plus this XLR unit the camera goes up to 3k . it’s something to consider and ask…is it worthy? depends from what u doing and what u really need.
Great video (as always), I have 2 G9ii bodies and I am curious as to whether the buffer clears any faster on the GH7, as it has CF express. I use my G9ii's for sports shooting and I have noticed the buffer clearing time is a bit slow, even with the fastest UHS-II cards. Thanks
Yeah, at this point, most of what I do I’ve gotten used to using the AF in manual, only using the auto focus to get initial focus. But I do agree that the GH7 is what the GH6 should’ve been but at this point with an uncertain economic Future, I’m just sort of seeing it as a luxury. Now, if it’s low light capability, is a lot better then it may be worth it if some of my main clients are sure to return.
I need some clarification on the 120FPS autofocus. Are you saying GH7 can't autofocus at 120fps? What is the max FPS for autofocus? I know the GH6/7 can't autofocus at 300fps, but I would've thought that changing the GH7 to a 120FPS codec would still allow some version of autofocus...?
HFR mode behaves just like 25/30/50/60p, i.e. it doesn't slow down the footage in camera. The only differences are: - 10bit 4:2:0 instead of 4:2:2 and - AF - you do get it (both with the G9II and the GH7), however, it IS limited as you don't get any face/eye/animal/... tracking! It's unfortunate that the G9II does not offer this, and a let down that the GH7 doesn't either imo. As for VFR - all manual focus.
Happy G92 Owner ( purchased after watching your reviews) 90% stills, love the Lumix 100-400 Mk2 and the excellent 12 -60 2,8-4 Mostly wildlife Raptors and street / Landscape scenery just getting into 4k 422.mov Video @ 50 p Noise is not as bad as I expected, but the 800mm reach ON THE 100 400 is a deal breaker for me when comparing the equivalent FF and lens upgrade costs. Great channel very well done.
I'm still getting used to the G9M2 and trying to figure out how to optimize the AF (that would be a good video--how to get the best out of the hybrid AF for different scenarios). As I'm stills-centric and often use MF, I've never had much trouble with DFD, but there are cases where the G9M2 seems to produce slightly better results. The G9M1 is still a phenomenal camara and although the M2 is an upgrade (although the M1 "feels" better in hand), it really only gives you a bit better odds of getting usable shots in challenging conditions. Beautiful Mesa amp there--I'll bet it sounds as good as it looks.

Word is that the GH7 will not ship until August 2024!!! What? 8++ weeks pre-order time? A real bummer for sure.

I hope at least one person does and decides to sell their g9ii super cheap used so I can pick it up!!

Hi Emily! Thanks for your comments. The GH7 would be a great multi-camera setup for sure for that sort of work. I hope you're well. 😄
The gh7 vs v9ii remimds me of gh5 vs g9 in a way back then.
Proud G9II owner here!
I am using G9 M2 for my wildlife videos here in India - am satisfied with the performance, i was in a confusion whether to replace my G9 M2 with GH7 but after seeing this video i think i need not to change the camera 😊
thanks for the video

3) The fan is good to have, but my G9ii has never overheated for me
4) I am unlikely to buy another XLR interface -I rarely use the one I have
5) I paid £1440 for the G9ii new, and the GH7 is £2000. That's 39% more money.
Well said!
i dont think most people who bought the G9II are gonna have buyer's remorse.. it seems perfectly fine for most users.. especially with the updated autofocus
I did sell my GH6 to buy the G9ii, but I won't buy the GH7 until the price drops significantly.
Absolutely love my G9II. I would really love to get the big red border back when recording. Why did they remove it?
It’s there mate you can turn it on and off in the menu. Check the tutorial I made on the G9II it’s time stamped in the description 😊
My g9ii overheats shooting longer interviews, and at first I was super disappointed. Then I bought an AC adapter with a dummy battery, and it solved the problem outright.
I was wondering if that would help the camera not overheat.
Which AC adapter did you buy?
@@ТарасГалишко-х9ц it uses USB c, and it's by a company called Ronfen - got it off of amazon.

You knew we were waiting on this comparison Shane. This is why I subscribed
Thanks for the support man!
You are just my dream content creator. Just the video I was looking for!
Thanks for the kind words, but you definitely need higher standards than me 😂
@@GeekyNerdyTechy what can be done better than you do already in your niche? You do the best camera comparisons and spec detailing atleast for the lumix cameras.
Wow man, this was a fantastic video. Thanks for making it.
Thanks for the kind words! Cheers
I would have had to sell two cameras instead of one.
even camera with a fan has its limits as will the GH7, but it would take a lot.
Cheers! The AARI Log is coming to the GH7 and GH6, and not the G9II from what I understand. It could change though.
@@GeekyNerdyTechy Oh! Seems I misheard you completely, my bad, sorry.
I think the G9 ii is still the best all rounder for most people and I hope Panasonic makes a super small compact Micro 4/3 body soon too
I completely agree !!
It depends on what you're shooting. If you need a camera to record all day, or in hot conditions get the GH7, if not - the G9II is a great choice.
@GeekyNerdyTechy thank you sir. Shane
Thanks for breaking it down, and for letting me understand that the G9 II has everything I would ever need!
Thanks for the support and kind words. Glad it was helpful! 😀
Dude thanks for explaining that the G9II has autofocus in 4K 120, honestly I didn’t know!
No problems. S&Q mode is a lot easier to work with. You can shoot 120p with AF on the GH7, but it's in the main recording menu option. VFR Mode locks it back to manual focus for some reason.
It works pretty well too! I use it for soccer all the time

@@GeekyNerdyTechy Have you heard that they are killing the GH6?
Is 32 bit audio recording with xlr possible with the G9 ii or only with the GH7
Only available on GH7. The XLR2 device only works on GH7 and isn't compatible with any other camera.
Reverse for me. Panasonics were always a nightmare to fix skin tones.
What about low light performance?
I didn't see a difference. I also asked Richard Wong, he said he got the same results as well. :)
how does vertical video for shorts work on 5.8k opengate .... can you demo that and the frame markers??
It has frame markers, yep. I have a tutorial on the G9II which shows some of those features. (and my GH7 review covers how it works)
S9 or G9ii which one would you recommend to shoot sharp dance videos?
Have you by chance tested the Autofocus the the Sigma18-35 EF mount with adapter at a wide aperture? Not a lot of videos on this wide open if any...
I dont have any sigma lenses, I'd like to try them at some point.
Thank you very much for the work and 2 important questions:
1° Do you think that the G9 MKII can last 5H/6H in 4K 50p non-stop (sports show) especially with an external power supply and at a temperature below 26° maximum?
2° What power supply should we use with the DMW-DCC18 GH7 coupler if we want to record on an SSD with the GH7..? Nobody talks about it
And the G9MKII has a grip to double the autonomy, not GH7.. you didn't say it here.
Also the G9 MKII does not need CFexpress and therefore has 2 identical SD slots = less expensive
Thank you for your reply
G9II missing time code. Nobody has mentioned it, but GH6 has it so assuming GH7 does as well. Plugs in to sync port.
Right, GH7 got the sync cable in the box.
Is the G9 ii switchable between NTSC and PAL?
Or, failing that, does the G9 ii have syncroscan?
The g9ii is switchable and also has 24 cinema mode. And yes it has syncro scan
Yep, it has all of that as Chris said :)
(to a ninja)
And nobody has reported heating issues with the g9ii.
Very interesting. Are there record time limitation on G9ii?
None, just some heat restrictions in some modes like 4k120 or shooting on hot days in the sun etc.
you dont get arri colours with the logc, that is sensor dependant. v log is already close to logc's curve
Ah cool. It's got a paid certified Aari Log Profile you can install on the camera.
When Birding which one is good G9 mkii or GH7.
They are both great. Right now, the GH7 has a more advanced AF tracking/detection system, but I think at some point they'll be both utilizing the same modes via updates.
Hi,just trying to understand 4K/120 is it possible to switch trough codec or only using VFR?Thank's
The GH 7 hast a BSI Sensor and the g9 II not.Is this right?
@GeekyNerdyTechy Same sensor in GH7 and G9M2 or not? Confusing info from Panasonic.
Yes it's the same sensor. I covered that in this video and in the review.
@@GeekyNerdyTechy So when Panasonic repeatedly states its a "newly developed sensor" is is just comparing it to the older GH6? What a lot of crap.
No flash sync port on the "photographer's camera"... 🙈
So I think I'll probably keep my current camera until GH8 offers it
Hi is Dynamic Range Boost switched on automatically on the G9II, like it is on the GH7, and is it the same parameters.
Yes, it's the same.
( 12-60 ,42.5 and 100-300 )
TLDR : does the G9 II have good automatic wireless automatic photo transfer to phone / computer?
Thanks for the review now I know I don't need the GH7 at least :)
Edit : maybe I should keep the G9mk1 and buy the S9 specifically for my work..?
Thanks
The G9ii still has no shutter angle, right?
How is the low light, please do a good test
You get AF in the regular recording menu on the GH7, but not in VFR mode (where it slows it down in the camera). It locks it back to Manual Focus.
HFR mode behaves just like 25/30/50/60p, i.e. it doesn't slow down the footage in camera. The only differences are:
- 10bit 4:2:0 instead of 4:2:2 and
- AF - you do get it (both with the G9II and the GH7), however, it IS limited as you don't get any face/eye/animal/...
The problem of the g9II is the price which is the same of the S5Mark2x and non x in Canada
Does the G9II have the DR boost function of the GH7?
Yes, it works exactly the same.
