HB Vivas were sold as Holden Toranas in Australia. Unlike Britain's HC, Australia did it's own update called the LC that was still an HB underneath some new panels. When you look under the bonnet of that HB you see HOW MUCH ROOM there is for bigger engines... The LC Torana of 1970 got the Vauxhall 1600 dropped into that big hole, and the sales slogan was "Little Big Wheel". And you got a 1256 as the standard mill.

Brings back memories for me! I always walked to and back from school, but one day my dad was there waiting outside the school gates. Until this day he had a horrid Austin 1100 that I was ashamed of even back then. On this day, however he decided to meet me and surprise me with a racing car! He'd bought a 2 door Vauxhall Viva - bright red, black vinyl roof! It was awesome and we still talk about it today!
My mum learned to drive in the previous model Viva (which was quite a bit smaller) in 1964. I used to sit in the back whilst she did her lessons. Then in the late 60s, early 70s, a Catholic priest we were friendly with, had the exact same HB Viva as this in the same colour and interior. This video brought back those great memories of childhood, thank you.
My first vehicle was a Bedford HA van. My mate rolled his Dad's Viva HC so the engine out of that went into the van so i went from 40hp to 60hp!! Happy Days!
My 72 HC was bought in 77. Has been unattended in the garage for 15 years but hope to get it back on the road one day. My view, for what it’s worth, is that the HC was the best viva, but the HB was the prettiest. That pale blue machine looks an absolute cracker.
I remember going to the car wreckers yard in NZ when i was young and one of these was dumped there. It was immaculate and obviously well taken care of. Now it was going to be broken up for parts. I just figured some old lady probably owned it and looked after it before her family dumped it in the scrap yard for parts after she shuffled off her mortal coil.
I remember those starter solenoids, they had a soft rubber button on the top you could press to engage the starter while you were under the bonnet. Perfect for checking the fuel supply. Later ones had the button removed and a solid top on 'em. Really missed the ease of spinning the engine over.
I had one of these back in the day. I believe mine was a 73 or 74 model. I really loved the car. Not terribly fast, but for a young man it was a fine car. I had many an adventure in mine, and I would love to have a restored classic.

In 1975 I bought the same car in the same colour but the lower model, SL's were to aspire to! It was a 1968 1159cc and was my first car! I still dream about it! If you own MOV 637 F I will pay you a Kings ransom for it.
I had a couple of these in the early ‘70s an HA and HC estate. I would strip and rebuild it on a weekend. I lived in Luton, which at that time was the home of Vauxhall and my next door neighbour worked there. The first time I stripped he engine down I asked him if he would help me lift it out. He said no in case he hurt his back, so I lifted it out on my own. In those days there was enough room in the engine bay for me to get in there and do a straight lift onto a board that I placed across the wings and the engine was light enough for me to do it single handed. I drove Vauxhalls from then until they moved their operation to Spain. Nissans are British built so that is my car of choice now.
Nice one even the missus was impressed. i had one that was given to me back in 1983. usual faults but it ran for years even part exed it for a new car. Keep em coming and crack on

If my memory serves me well firing order was 1,3,4,2. Horrible rattling noise was from the tappets which I seem to be adjusting every couple of months. I think it was inlet valve 6 and exhaust was 10 on the feeler gauge. The good old days of motoring. What happened to the car in the finish and what happened to you after tasting vintage coolant lol. The coil should have a ballast resistor on one terminal. 12v feed in and coil runs at 9v when engine is running but starts on 12v to give it an extra boost. Technology from the 60s
I had one for my 1st car in 1983, same year and model, but this one looks to be in much better condition. Looks like original inner and outer wings judging by the original badges , plus they normally go by the hinges. Another rust area is the rear quarter but that looks fine, even the boot lid looks great. Looking at the plastic breather around the dipstick it must have the original 1159 engine in it, most of them were replaced with the HC Viva /chevette 1256. That car is very rare now in that original condition and worth thousands. I actually still work at the plant in Ellesmere port where this car was built. (Now the plant is in process of getting converted to build electric vans)

My dad had the green estate version of this when I was a kid.SVF369G.He traded it in for the newer model than this one and then traded that in for a metallic blue one with the vinyl roof.After that he went onto Astras.x

Happy memories of the early 1970,s when my dad had one of these as his company car. it was a darker blue SL90. it was a G reg and got replaced in 1973 by a HC viva estate.Mreg. wish I could remember the registration numbers, one of them may've survived. Back in 1988, my brand new car got stolen. I bought a cheap Viva HB 1970 H reg for £60 to tide me over until the insurance was settled. I instantly fell in love with it on my long drive to london each day for work. it even had an 8track player and loads of cool tapes from the 60,s and 70,s. I only sold it because I later needed a 4 door car, so bought a cool Vauxhall Magnum 2300.

Same engine more or less as in my mrs Vauxhall Nova. Good engines they are quite peppy for what they are. The one in the nova regularly takes a good amount of stick.

My first car in 1976, WGO 828G, a 1969 SL peacock blue example with the 1600 OHC engine with a sunroof. Such a lovely car, though lamentably unreliable and already rusting badly under the wings. I learned to drive on the bad bendy roads on holiday in Ardnamurchan in Scotland ('if you can drive here, you can drive anywhere') during the hottest Summer of the century and passed my test in it back in London.
Wow here in Australia we had these but they were called the HB Torana .Before they worked the front and rear to put the six in it . Never realized they were so close .Ours had a different grill and headlights plus there was 2 different types of carby's. Great little car around town but out on the open road always felt like it needed another gear. And don't over rev them that engine had a habit of the valves separating and the head of the valve falling down to jam pistons . A mate of mine had one but it kept breaking down under revs so I rebuilt the carby and got it to rev .So whats he do take it out the road and it went bang. 6 Grand seemed to be a bit of a limit for these .

We had a viva like that (tho the sl90 --- had a CD Stromberg instead of Solex carb) even the same colour. amazed at how this one survived so well as Vauxhalls of this period (we had a viva hc & a victor as well) as seemed to die of terminal rusting usuall round the front end, will subscribe to see the follow up video.
I live in Manitoba Canada..and back in 1975 my first car i got was a Vauxhall Viva car to drive...think it was a 68??..Standard shift model.... it got totaled in an accident ( lady turned in front of me ).. then i got an automatic one.. it blew up - engine ( friend was using it ) ... really enjoyed the First one...cheap on gas and fun to use....the Auto one was ok but slower and less fun ..but still so cheap on fuel...lol
The inner wings are great, they used to rot, i worked on Viva's in the late 70's, they would not run well on Champion plugs but as soon as you put AC ones in they ran perfect
Yes, AC plugs are a must, I think they take a 42XLS , the equivalent of an N9Y. In fact Vauxhall electrics are critical. You can get away with CI points but ideally you need AC throughout. Those the tappet clearances set correctly that engine will idle silently, all you hear is the balance weights in the distributor.

Sorting out the mechanical issues is relatively simple, but the suspension mountings on the body will be dangerously corroded and prohibitively expensive to repair. The rust will be spreading everywhere on the car.
Brilliant. What a fab find. My Dad had one of these but I was too young to remember. I do remember the K reg HC he got in 1972. First observation was aren't those glass headlights lovely and clear. I'm going to be polishing the plastic headlights on my mums 2008 fiesta later with 40k miles on - these look like they've been in a barn.
Nice find. A great looking example. Always liked the 70s Viva. But. The track Marshall more interesting to me. The viva will be easier to get started though.
HB was a nice little car, with very good handling, The 2-litre was even better. For some reason, the small motor was very sensitive to spark-plug brand. Champions just didn't work, while ACs were fine, if memory serves me correctly.

We had a viva like that (tho the sl90 --- had a CD Stromberg instead of Solex carb) even the same colour. amazed at how this one survived so well as Vauxhalls of this period (we had a viva hc & a victor as well) as seemed to die of terminal rusting usuall round the front end, will subscribe to see the follow up video.
I live in Manitoba Canada..and back in 1975 my first car i got was a Vauxhall Viva car to drive...think it was a 68??..Standard shift model.... it got totaled in an accident ( lady turned in front of me ).. then i got an automatic one.. it blew up - engine ( friend was using it ) ... really enjoyed the First one...cheap on gas and fun to use....the Auto one was ok but slower and less fun ..but still so cheap on fuel...lol
The inner wings are great, they used to rot, i worked on Viva's in the late 70's, they would not run well on Champion plugs but as soon as you put AC ones in they ran perfect
Yes, AC plugs are a must, I think they take a 42XLS , the equivalent of an N9Y. In fact Vauxhall electrics are critical. You can get away with CI points but ideally you need AC throughout. Those the tappet clearances set correctly that engine will idle silently, all you hear is the balance weights in the distributor.
@@foxstrangler i seem to remember tappets 8thou engine running, friends dads feeler gauges always had a mangled n bent 8 thou, messy job tho oil splatter

Sorting out the mechanical issues is relatively simple, but the suspension mountings on the body will be dangerously corroded and prohibitively expensive to repair. The rust will be spreading everywhere on the car.

Brilliant. What a fab find. My Dad had one of these but I was too young to remember. I do remember the K reg HC he got in 1972. First observation was aren't those glass headlights lovely and clear. I'm going to be polishing the plastic headlights on my mums 2008 fiesta later with 40k miles on - these look like they've been in a barn.
Nice find. A great looking example. Always liked the 70s Viva. But. The track Marshall more interesting to me.

Watching this 4 months out of date which is a shame as I wouldn`t mind having this car, looks good under all the crap.
HB was a nice little car, with very good handling, The 2-litre was even better.
For some reason, the small motor was very sensitive to spark-plug brand. Champions just didn't work, while ACs were fine, if memory serves me correctly.
Vauxhalls like AC plugs.
My first car at 12 yrs old was a viva, we lived on a farm, ide love another for project purposes 👍
