    It is wonderful to see a father and son have an intelligent debate over something they share a loving interest in. This is an opportunity to start a new series of videos. How about a side by side tasting: Father and Son tasting and rating together.

    There's a huge misconception with age statements in relation to quality. Most people who likes scotch think the older the better. They Look at Bourbon as less then, because it's not aged as long as their favorite Scotch. There is a reason for this; whiskey matures based on heat and temperature change. I.e. the hotter it is the faster it ages. (The barrel breaths in & out the whiskey). The reason bourbon isn't aged as long (although there are a handful aged 10 to 25 years) is because Kentucky sees very long hot summers & short cold winters. Scotland's climate is much more moist & cooler (by comparison) all year round, so the whisky takes longer to mature. Scotland also uses used casks to age their spirits (old bourbon & sherry casks) so that also adds to the misconception. Bourbon can only use new white oak casks.

      @@whynottalklikeapirat No. It can't win. It's a very subjective topic which means that everyone likes different things. There is no possible way to just decide which one is better for everyone. I personally love bourbon and think that scotch tastes pretty much the same from every distillery, BUT i know that it's only my palette that makes me think that and i have respect for people who enjoy scotch, except for whiskey elitists such as you.

  • @Alchiel
    @Alchiel 6 лет назад +7

    Old school versus new school! I love it! I definitely enjoy the complexity of scotch, although you cannot ignore bourban as an interesting contrast -- maybe they can learn from eachother! Though, I'd much rather see scotch distilleries stick to their roots because that's the foundation of their identity. Chill filtering seems nearly pointless and caramel colouring is a gimmick, for sure. Everybody knows that the taste is what matters!

    I got into whisk(e)y a little over 10 years ago - primarily single malt scotch.
    I've been a 'scotch snob' up until 8 months ago when I decided to give my fellow Americans a try (in the past I've had numerous drams of the 'usual suspects' Jack Daniels, Jim Beam, and Maker's Mark, and none have been too impressive).
    Wasn't until I purchased a bottle of Evan Williams Single Barrel from Costco for $20 that my opinion of bourbon changed...From that point I found myself enjoying the variety of Kentucky bourbon, and Tennessee whisky more so than single malt scotch for numerous reasons.
    Fresh 1st fill casks, no artificial coloring, abv usually 45% or more, there's no 'NAS' price gouging, and bourbon here in the USA is a fraction of the cost of single malts from Scotland.
    Again - nothing against whiskey from Scotland - just that now I'm seeing much of what they have to offer is vastly overrated.

    Scotch of course has a connotation with luxury and with the upper classes. So some of the fools in this comments section will choose Scotch just to prove how "classy" they are.
    With that said, the best whiskys I've tasted have been Scotches, but so too were the worst (way too rich, syrupy, unbalanced, whatever). Bourbons seems to have a higher "bottom shelf" than Scotches do. Even "bad" bourbons were decent bourbons.

      that really updated my journal - couldn't agree with you more. It's only because of pop culture that Scotch is looked at as superior (and classier) to bourbon. Obviously these naysayers haven't tried anything from Buffalo Traces Antique Line (pappy van winkle, George T Stagg, etc)

    • @subutaynoyan5372
      @subutaynoyan5372 5 лет назад +2

      Scotch is better, because overall taste is better. It really has great cheap examples as well. Like Teachers.
      The overall variations give way for bad productions, but you compare the two with good examples, not bad ones. Comparing Jack Daniel's and Bell's is pointless. When the higher end products are the issue, scotch is just better.
      I've never, tasted a bourbon like a Macallan. Or Lagavulin or Glenlivet.
      Now I'm not saying bourbon is bad, nor I'm saying I don't enjoy it. It's just not that complex.
      My favourite bourbon is Maker's Mark by the way. Great stuff. There are a lot of American bourbons around.
      But nothing beats a single malt.

    • @richardbostan4286
      @richardbostan4286 9 лет назад +1

      +Jason Lieberthal -- And at least in North America (where I am) "really good scotch" is very expensive. Bourbon and rye represent much better value for money. I know Horst has said in other videos that he prefers scotch to bourbon, but I have also noted his tendency to review old and very expensive scotch much more often than he reviews the cheaper scotch. It is easy to be a scotch snob when you can afford to stick to bottles that cost hundreds or even thousands of dollars.

    • @VoidedTea
      @VoidedTea 9 лет назад

      +Richard Bostan Highland Park 12 on Horst's table is only $50 here in Canada AB and probably even cheaper in the States. It is very good scotch, one of the best in this price range. And there are many other scotch brands that are very good and around $50 in price.

    • @richardbostan4286
      @richardbostan4286 9 лет назад

      +VoidedTea -- I am in British Columbia (which is in Canada, I say for the benefit of non-Canadians reading this). Highland Park 12 sells for $71.00 here, and I don't think it is good at all. I know I am not the only person who thinks that about HP 12, because in the 2015 edition of Jim Murray's Whisky Bible he gives it a rather low rating (78). Murray gives very high grades to the HP 18 and HP 25, but in British Columbia those are priced at $174 and $460 respectively. Am I going to pay either of those prices for a single bottle of whisky? Absolutely not! To date, the whisky I have given my highest rating to (a rating of 93) is Booker's Bourbon, which is $60 in British Columbia. Even Horst likes Booker's.:) Look up the review Horst did for it, if you haven't seen it already.

      +Jack Dry guess what bourbon is...a different whiskey. not everyone likes the peat smoke in their drink. i also personally take umbridge with the fact you pay $50+ for "good" scotch and its watered down to 40% abv and pumped with caramel coloring so it less resembles all that water that just polluted it. i dont have that problem with $50+ bourbon. In this price range they are usually aged to 10+ years as well, come in at 50% abv have ZERO misleading coloring added and the taste and mouthfeel is feel wonferful and complex. mouthfeel especially. i like scotch but this deference paid to it like they are the only purveyors of fine whiskey at affordable prices is ludicrous.

    With Scotch less is more - Bourbon, plan on drinking half the bottle and you may just end up sick. I see it almost as a quality vs quantity thing in some regards. Very different spirits. Fine bourbon is nice, but a fine Scotch is much more complex and a different type of experience.

    • @matts6551
      @matts6551 7 лет назад

      C C - how Irish are you? If you drink half a bottle of anything that's high in ABV you will end up sick (or drunk). Fine bourbon is a slow sipping spirit. The premium stuff is hard to drink in mass quantity, because of the high proof (100 - 136 proof)

    very difficult in the united states to have whisky in the cask for a long time, our seasons are much more extreme than those in scottland. We are looking for ways to keep whisky in the cask longer, the scotts are looking for ways to get it out sooner, both without sacrificing quality. Just look at the color on a 5 year bourbon, and compare it to the color on a 12 year scotch.

    My opinion is this. It depends on the palate and also depending on what you are feeling taste on whatever day you decide to have a glass. Both bourbon and scotch typically have the same notes depending but it develops new flavors as it ages. You can mix bourbon with many different casks after using the white charred oak for a few years and typically when you have a bourbon aged for as long as say a scotch. In my opinion it has more complexity and flavor. Bourbon is very adaptable as is scotch. Each different type of bottle has different tastes at the end of the day so it is pretty much a draw. Depends on what you are feeling to taste

    I'm late to this discussion, as I've only gotten into tasting and collecting since July 2016. But my first whisky was in Edinburgh, the Glenfiddich 12, and even then the light peatness made me wince. Since then I've had owned non-peated Scotches (Auchentoshan, Glenmorangie, Glen Moray, Speyburn and others). And yes, I do feel there is more interesting, delicate and complex flavor varieties in Scotch. But three things: 1. I'm still too sensitive to the smoky medicinal quality of Scotch, 2. Scotch is too expensive for my budget and 3. Simply put, my taste buds have an orgasm when I taste a good bourbon. I'll buy whatever my taste is drawn to, and right now my collection is 75% bourbon. And many excellent bourbons (Wild Turkey 101, Evan Williams BiB, Weller Antique, etc. ) are under $30 don't break the bank like Scotch would. But talk to me in a couple of years, my tastes may change!

    "Do you use your tea bag twice?" Well technically to get varying flavors of tea, you do brew it 5-10 times depending on the tea. With that said, I'm a fan of the reusing of casks. It allows the flavor to mature compared to bourbon. Though I love both for two different reasons

      @Cypeq 8 лет назад +2

      +kimkishineegirl you brew teabag 5 times you have lost your mind. This only aplies to aged loose leaf tea. you definitely have good results from loose leaf at first and second brewing... after that it really depends.

    • @jdn94
      @jdn94 8 лет назад

      Cypeq First time? Best results? No way! When I talk about tea bags...I talk about my own prepared tea bags which I buy from a good friend of mine whose family in China actually makes oolongs. The first brew of tea is the worst as the flavor and the aroma has not fully bloomed. This is why we awaken the tea and throw out the first brewing. It's only by the second brewing do we actually drink it. Tea tastes better the more its brewed (for greens approx. 5, for oolongs maybe 5-10 and blacks 10-15...matcha is a totally different story). The flavors deepen as the tea gradually awakens. The true flavor of the tea comes out after the first few brews.
      And "aged loose leaf" depends. You most certainly do not want to age Japanese green teas or any green tea for that matter. Now if you're talking about pu-erh, than you can brew that shit for 10-15 times before the flavor is gone.
      You must be brewing your tea too long if the flavor goes away by the third brew.

    • @Cypeq
      @Cypeq 8 лет назад

      kimkishineegirl hey lucky you. I'm a big fan of oolong myself. Of course you know they mean teabags like 'lipton' with tea powder inside.
      I also discard first brew... it's wetting the leaves I don't even put that much water when doing that. I would not count it.
      You are right I brew my oolong and and black too long but than again I like it go strong and slightly bitter. That's a preference.
      I brew green similar to what you describe, and it really can go the distance, but it's delicate flavours are not my favourite.

    I agree with a few other comments in that bourbon tends to have better cheap or 'middle of the road' offerings while scotch tends to get a lot better past the $50-$60 price point - that's when scotch really starts to shine. Bourbon does too of course but not quite as much in my opinion. Either way I've got to have at least a few bottles of both.
    I'm not a fan of Canadian or Irish whiskey and I've never tried Japanese, nor do I intend to tbh.

      TheJusnic82 - try Bookers Uncut & Unfiltered (126 proof and up). Sweet usually isn't a common bourbon characteristic, may I ask what you tried in terms of Bourbon that gave you that notion? Usually spice comes to mind with bourbon/rye.

    • @TheOriginalRaster

      Decade I hope you don't mind me adding some thoughts related to what you have written here. I'm not very experienced but I now have a varied collection of about 1/5 Peated and 4/5 Unpeated Scotch brands in bottles where I have taste tested and I can go back and pour a dram. (50 Scotch, 10 Bourbon, plus Irish Whisky, and Canadian, etc.) After initial trying peated brands, I find that I am not touching my peated bottles even though they are the best, reasonable priced products in this category (Ardbeg, Laphroig, Lagavulin, etc.).
      You can avoid all peated Scotch and you then have a vast variety of choices. I'm noting you have the choice of comparing unpeated Scotch with the Bourbon choices which you are enjoying.
      Cheers!

    • @TheOriginalRaster
      @TheOriginalRaster 8 лет назад

      OK, I'm saying Four Fifths of all Scotch has absolutely no peat.. no peat taste, no peat anything.
      Scotch is made out of malted barley.. if you cook it over a peat fueled fire, it is peated. If you dry it without burning peat, then there is no peat or smoke taste.
      So then you're tasting malted barley fermented, distilled and then aged in Oak casks for at least 4 years, and in addition some go on to be aged in other casks which previously contained a wine. That's it. That's scotch with no peat.
      Some examples of Single Malt Scotch with absolutely no peat (that I've purchased): Dalwhinnie 15 yo, The Balvenie Doublewood 12 yo,, Glenmorangie 10 yo Original (and many more).
      No peat...
      Thanks.

      Raster - but most scotch is pretty medicinal tasting, poor water quality is my guess. Bourbon uses limestone filtered water which filters out the iron & is calcium rich (i.e. Smoother taste). I've had enough Scotch to back up my claims (Glenffidich 14 single malt, Johnny Walker Blue to name 2 among others) i'm still waiting for a scotch I can appreciate a full bottle. Whereas I haven't had a bourbon I wasn't able to finish the bottle (16 so far).

    I drink bourbon because I only have experience with Johnie Walker (red) and I loved it very peaty. I can drink whiskey or bourbon because $50 a glass or $1 a glass its all snobby to buy $100 bottle of scotch or bourbon and $22 a 1.75 liter of American bourbon like Evan Williams I choose the economical version. I once ran out of bourbon because I bought Elijah Craig 750 ml fifth for $35 and I wished I bought Evan Williams 1.75 L for $22 LOL

    Well in terms of flavor profiling I feel that Scotch tend to have that very musky, aged-wood taste. The older the year it definielty tastes like butter scotch and caramel. It gets more buttery. Bourbons have a very full pallet and tend to be very diverse in different flavors (citrus nodes, spicy nodes, fruity nodes etc). This is in my experience and I haven't been drinking a lot, so I might not be completely accurate.

    • @subutaynoyan5372
      @subutaynoyan5372 5 лет назад +1

      Scotches tend to be very diverse. The taste relies on maturation process. A Lagavulin and a Talisker feels really different than a Macallan or a Glenvilet.
      Bourbon has similar aromas, way narrower so I really don't get what you're on about.
      I like bourbons caramel and vanilla taste though

    • @alysham4n4l0
      @alysham4n4l0 5 лет назад

      M Bayrak Ahh, I’m learning whiskey profiling one day at a time. I think what I was getting at was similar to what you explained. But for some reason I personally feel like Bourbons, although narrower, often has more flavor variety? I don’t know I feel like sometimes flavors in scotch can be lost in the maturing process and can generally be clumped into this one very rich flavor. If that makes sense.

    • @subutaynoyan5372
      @subutaynoyan5372 5 лет назад +1

      @@alysham4n4l0 Yeah it happens. That's why some people add in a drop of water. Because alcohol solves the aromas and when you water it down, more flavor comes to the surface.
      I like scotches myself. Save for Maker's Mark. Maker's Mark is one great, pleasant whisky.
