  • Older wood toms or snares can sometimes get cracks in the shell, which mean that one or more layer is delaminating. The stress of being played or just old age can make a drum come apart in this way. If you catch the problem early the laminations can be re-glued with a lasting repair. In this video I'll demonstrate the repair steps on an old Tama Imperialstar tom that is just starting to delaminate where the mounting hardware is located.

Thank you for this! I was way overthinking how to clamp it.

Yes, that's easy to do. If you were building a new drum from your own laminations you would need a circular jig and a million clamps or straps, but when doing a repair on an existing drum it's not that complicated.

Perfect video. I have almost exactly the same issue with a Wesper snare, even with the same paint inside. Thanks.

I had this happen on my Tama Superstar 10". Got left in the cold for a season, and there might have been some issues with the wood itself, or manufacturing. I used the same type of wood glue, but used the thinnest feeler gauge I could find to work it into the crack (.0015" or .038 mm). Worked great. Basically clamped it the same way too.

Changes in humidity are what cause the most trouble, along with the stress of mounting hardware when being played.

Thank you for making this video. I would have just put a clamp or two on the drum in repairing instead of making what you did with the pine.
    Much appreciated!

That would be okay if the shell is still solid and not out of round. But, if your shell has become out of round or the damage is significant, then the pinch blocks cut to the shell radius will keep the shell aligned while the glue cures.
