The Making Of A FrankenTama Snare Drum
Просмотров 4,2 тыс.Год назад
Like many drummers, I had an old Tama steel snare drum shell lying around, which had been stripped of parts. I didn't want to waste the perfectly good shell, so I decided to marry it with inexpensive generic lugs and other parts. The Frankenstein monster result, which I call a FrankenTama snare, came out pretty well! If you want to do something similar, this video documents the whole process.

Evans GMAD Bass Drum Head Compared With Remo Powerstroke 3

On my vintage Tama Imperialstar bass drum I've used the Remo Powerstroke 3 head for several years, but I wanted something a little more punchy. I decided to try the Evans GMAD bass head instead, and then compare the two side by side in a recording. The GMAD head has a unique foam ring muffling system. Ultimately they are both excellent heads, but which you prefer may depend on the sound charact...

    Handy tip: Use drumheads that aren't so stretched out that that the hoop is below the bearing edge, so that sticks will not smash the bearing edge you just re-cut.

    • @tinderboxartsmusic
      @tinderboxartsmusic Месяц назад

      That's not actually what was going on, if you are referring to the end. The Tama Imperialstar 6 and 8 inch concert toms from that era came with special hoops which did sit just below the bearing edge, even with new heads. I presume the idea was to allow more strike area, but it was a dumb design. I did finally source replacement hoops of the normal variety and replaced them, but the 6 inch hoop is not easy to find.

    For those wondering, this snare shell is the 1st generation King Beat snare. Great drums. No need to weld over the lug holes for 1/16th of an inch; Simply bore out the existing holes. I have the same shell and just simply bored them out and the 2" lugs went on with zero issues. Leave the extra holes as is so that it gives the drum a drier sound as it's simply an extra airhole. The drum does look sharp. Props!

      That would be okay if the shell is still solid and not out of round. But, if your shell has become out of round or the damage is significant, then the pinch blocks cut to the shell radius will keep the shell aligned while the glue cures.

    • @tinderboxartsmusic
      @tinderboxartsmusic 9 месяцев назад

      It's a little weird, but it works. I think it's a Gibraltar mini-boom bracket but with an L-arm installed instead of the normal boom arm. And the bracket is attached to the hi-hat stand with a Tama multiclamp. Basically a mish-mosh of spare parts.

      Oh, I see what you are getting at--it requires a cymbal mount. The L arm I had was for cymbals. It would not work on a tom mount L arm.

    Thanks for the video, very interesting. I plan to do the same on my toms, however I have also the reso head to deal with. I was wondering if you somehow have had experience on how it sounds with also reso head on. tks

    • @tinderboxartsmusic
      @tinderboxartsmusic 11 месяцев назад

      When you are miking this close to the batter head, it's mostly that head which comes through. It's going to be a "dry" recording without much ambience from the rest of the drum, or the room. The upside of that is that you get a fairly isolated track for each drum and you can add EQ and reverb or other affects later in your DAW. The downside is that you will not get a live room sound or much of the resonant head, which can sometimes be desirable. In your case the resonant head will still do it's job of controlling batter head tone and decay, but what you will be recording is mostly the batter head. I'd say this style of miking is appropriate for rock, fusion, electric country, and other pop styles but probably not so good for acoustic jazz or other acoustic oriented music.

    • @tinderboxartsmusic
      @tinderboxartsmusic Год назад

      Yes, this was originally sold as an entry level snare. Before you dismiss it, though, the sound quality is actually quite good for jazz and orchestra styles. The six lugs allow more resonance. I wouldn't generally use it for rock or other heavy styles, but I love it for lighter use.

    That's an interesting project! Were you worried about painting the bearing edges? I know when a wood drum gets repainted, it's important to tape over the bearing edges. But I'm not sure if that's typical for a metal shell

    • @tinderboxartsmusic
      @tinderboxartsmusic Год назад

      That's a great question, actually. I have a lot of experience with paints because I own a remodeling business and because I've done a lot of automotive work over the decades. In this case it was a metal shell, and I was using a spray enamel. As long as you give it time to cure the paint should hold up just fine on the bearing edge. I don't spray heavily there so I avoid build up, and that ensures that the paint won't affect the tone in any great way. For wood shells you could make an argument that keeping paint away from the bearing edge would provide a smoother point of contact and allow the use of waxes if desired. However, I also have been using Tama toms with the "Zola coat" finish for decades, and that is basically just paint. In fact, it's a pretty rough painted surface and it extends to the bearing edge. Yet, they sound just fine. So, I think if you want to paint wood bearing edges you still can, but I would also recommend keeping the coats light and allowing the paint to fully cure. A lot of people don't realize that standard latex paints can take weeks to fully cure, even though they may be dry in an hour. A few days is enough to build a functional cure, though.

    I'm in the process of redoing my new 12 pc. Double bass setup.never owned one B4, and it looks cool,but at 68 years old having a hard time getting around the kit,and placement of a few toms never really worked out.after trying about everything,I've decided to just make 2 kits and use my double pedal on the 22" kick with 8,10,12,13,16,18 toms,and make a little jazz kit with the 20" bass,and 12"Tom,14"floor tom. I'll have the best of both worlds I guess.Im going to miss the big double bass setup,but I think it willale me a better player in the end.When you get my age,these old legs and arms don't move like they once did.Enjoy your new configuration,they look stunning.

    • @tinderboxartsmusic
      @tinderboxartsmusic Год назад

      I played double bass for so long it didn't seem like I could do with just a single bass and a double pedal, but now it seems natural. I also started creating another (third!) set using the previous second bass drum. Believe me, the effort is worth it to get the toms better situated and your legs a little closer together. Getting old is no joke! I'm MUCH more comfortable now and my joints thank me for the minor investment in a pedal and racks.

    You might want to try putting a automotive rubber hose on the arm the mic is on. This way the clamp is grabbing on the hose and should act like a shock mount, absorbing vibrations that could transfer up the spur to the clamp and the mic. That is unless that clip you are using has a built in shockmount.
