  • When you approach retiring your brain is full of all kinds of wonderful adventures and projects and plans... Then, after a bit -- the honeymoon wears off and... who the hell are you anymore? Why is that!?

yes to do nothing is ok - but after a while you will feel very empty and lost. Library, coffee, trips, meals, meeting freinds....yeah all rigt...but gets very luke warm after a while. No time to find your passion - your inner fire....

I retired 8 years ago. Right away I moved to a city with beaches, nature, hiking, everything outdoors & beautiful weather. I fell right into volunteering & helping others. It came naturally as I came from a career of public service. I filled my home with rescue pets & it's been so fulfilling and my life feels complete and enjoyable for a single senior woman.

I retired early two years ago. At first I tried to stay just as busy as I was when working. I got burned out on this. Now I realized my God, I am retired I don't need to rush or do anything. I do go to the gym three days a week and run my errands, clean the house and paint some walls. I try not to stress about it anymore. People are so frantically busy all the time I am glad I am not there anymore.

I'm 88. Started work at 15, worked for 44 years and have now been pleasantly active in my 29 years of retirement. What to do? Be serious and ask yourself "What am I?" Book into a meditation retreat. Start to find out 'what you are not.' Cease the seeking without. For, as it's been said, in the case of happiness, go within. "If you don't go within you go without." You really were born for a purpose. Let IT seek you out.

We do whatever we want to do. Nothing is boring because we are good with each others company. We seldom take out the car we share because we walk everywhere. We live in a quiet neighborhood but walking distance to grocery, coffee, bank, library, etc. We don't have to worry about money as our house and car is paid off. We travel when we want to and can go anywhere we please but it seems the older we get the less we want to travel far. Sounds boring to some, but we have no gardener, no housecleaner so we put on the music and work in the garden or house. At the moment we are painting part of the house and getting the garden ready. We can afford to have all of this hired out but we have the time to do it ourselves. We declutter as we go and give away so much that does not bring us joy or that we need. Life is good.

For women, it's hard to figure out what to do in retirement because they've been working double days for their entire adult lives. When suddenly, all that social-instilled pressure to be everything to everyone is off, they find they have no acceptable model for their post-productive existences. It's hard for men, also, who have not cultivated hobbies and non-work interests/relationships. Loneliness is a biggie.

I lost over $70k when everything started to tank. Not because I was in an exchange that went belly up. I was just stupid to hold and because that's what everyone said. I'm still responsible. It just taught me to be a better investor now that I understand more of what could go wrong. It took me over two years of being in the market, I'm really grateful I found one source to recover my money, at least $10k profits weekly. Thanks Gloria Robinson

Great video. I tried to plan ahead as much as possible. I joined a local church and made some new friends, scheduled activities with some of my friends from previous workplaces (breakfast dates), etc. before I actually retired. Husband is 11 years older than me and was retired 10 years before me. The first 2 years were occupied with finishing up all the things on the To Do List I never had time to get around to as well as enjoying my grandson's last few years of high school and sports. But then it happened... a sudden stop and boredom (winter is the worst) My husband has had some health issues and he is pretty sedentary and I also found myself sitting around the house in front of the TV way too much and pretty much going "crazy". LOL. After a lot of thought and self-examination I've set some goals for this year. Traveling (even if it's just smaller trips or solo trips), I live 5 miles from a State Park and started hiking and will be adding swimming in the Summer months. In the winter I started adult paint by numbers and found it very relaxing. I schedule one Old Gals breakfast a month and go to a Women's Club meeting once a month at my church. Currently I'm looking into free online courses or local college courses and I'm going to start going to our Old Fashioned movie theater to watch a movie occasionally. This will most likely be a solo adventure as well. It's important to keep your mind and body active. Most of the things I do are inexpensive.

It takes so long because we were so focused on just getting to the finish line of working. We figured we would sleep in, walk more, eat better, read, have naps - all the things you think about while working. Then after the first few months goes by you realize you just needed that temporarily and now it’s boring. You think you will fall into or discover something that will fulfill you that didn’t avail itself to you previously. Then you realize it’s because you were sleeping and reading 😂. You gotta get out in the world with people in order to discover new things for the most part. Now get out there!

I've searched my mind, many places, and my heart, have continued to take courses as I have my whole life, worked the tax season, and traveled abroad a bit, and I'm bored.

Vary interesting - born 1957 in Sweden and retired since 2022. Yes - to retire is leave the old system. That is difficult. You need to dare to live in not to know until you know. Buddist men leave their family at the end of the life and enter the temple. To be a servant of society. So that is it be of service to society - in your own way - don not be tricked to follow the old...

I'm 59 and I find it difficult to understand why you'd have trouble figuring yourself out in retirement. I guess if you don't know who you are or what you want in life that would be the case, but by retirement I would have thought most people who know that. Maybe they don't. Do you not spend more time doing the things you already love-for me, gardening, hiking, camping, cooking, going to the beach, writing, learning.

Yes, @missmayflower says it very well. We all have different experiences and those of who focused on who we had to be and what we had to do in order to achieve conventional success may have a difficult time even knowing how to tell what it is WE want or who WE are because our lives have been lived through the perspective of meeting certain external standards. We have to now determine OUR standards.

I retired in May of '22 and have been busy learning to trade stock options since. Thankfully, I've gotten pretty decent at it. My hope is to start traveling more starting this summer or fall. Like another poster said, I wouldn't trade my learning curve for anything. It's been fun figuring myself out now that I don't have to please others to earn a living anymore. I'm not looking for anything to do as far as part-time work or volunteering... I've spent my whole life "doing". I just want to experience and learn about whatever catches my curiosity at any given time. I am interested in receiving your link for the conversation.

I have found this to be ahuge issue. I have now found Impro - comedy improvisation. Its full of younger people, a new skill, affordable etc but i am scared of what happens in 7 to 10 years time when i am not fit enough....
Also in the UK you become invisible. No status unless you have grandchildren. Its hard

I feel you and understand what you're experiencing. My suggestion is to not DWELL on what may or may not happen in the future, but envision what you want, plan and take action today needed to get there. But, do NOT give your present time to what may or may not happen. When you do, you are envisioning - which is in part, how your future comes into being. Only envision what you want. It's like a radar/GPS.

My retirement from 45 yrs in healthcare coincided with pandemic lockdown..that was challenging! 4 yrs later I am loving my life. I first had to shed my identity of what I did working..that is not who I am. Then create a healthy non stressful daily routine.
Volunteer @ something you LOVE. I work in a town barn 2 mornings a week...a whole new experience. Not rushing is great. Back to exercise @ ymca. Expect the first year to be tough if you were in a demanding profession. Very hard switching gears.
