Lovely. I so love the lyrics of this. 'If thou wouldst foil thy foes with JOY, then flit not from this baby boy!' We all need joy just at the moment, and we all need this baby boy!
If thou whilst foil thy foes with joy , then flit not from this heavenly boy ! Britten’s words . I remember them , I sang them in high school . Might’ve been a long time ago, but they’re still very clear in my memory.
Gotta agree...anyone who says they've heard better might well have....recorded in a controlled environment. I say to them only this...go out and SING this piece with an ensemble LIVE and tell me how you stack up against this amazing performance. And yes, the canon is correct. I've sung this, played this, conducted this, and believe me when I say it's one of the toughest pieces of choral music snuck into one and a half minutes of time. Bravo indeed to these kids and the conductor...and harpist too!!
I have to agree with you, Dan. I sang this in college, in a choir of adult women (19-23). We struggled with this piece, despite all being native speakers and (mostly) having fully mature voices. I can't imagine what a challenge this must have been for these young singers. Considering the fact that we had to slow it down to just over 2 minutes due to running short on rehearsal time, I'm extremely impressed with their accomplishment!
@@isseirobinson1052 yes, but lyrically and rhythmically, it’s very tough. The canon parts are so close that it’s easy to be persuaded by one’s neighbor that you need to join them!
Wow, I am so impressed by how on-time their entrances are during the canon, considering that they're children. It is so easy to get lost (even for well-trained adults). When I did it with college choir, at least it was SATB, so the male voices were an octave lower, so it was easier to differentiate between different melodic lines. In this case, however, all the lines were at the same octave, making it much more challenging, Kudos to this group for flawless timing!
I uploaded this, so I can sing while I am listening :) This Little Babe This little bab so few days old Is come to rifle Satan's fold; All hell doth at his presence quake Though he himself for cold do shake; For in this week unarmed wise The gates of hell he will surprise With tears he fights and wins the field His naked breast stads for a shield His battering shot are babish cries His arrows looks of weeping eyes His martial ensigns Cold and Need And feeble flesh his warrior's steed His camp is pitched in a stall His bulwark but a broken wall; The crib his trench, haystalks his stakes Of shepherds he his muster makes And thus as sure his foe to wound The angels' trumps a larum sound My soul with Christ Join thou in fight; Stick to the tents That he hath pight Within his crib Is surest ward; This little Babe Will by thy guard If thou wilt foil thy Foes with joy, then Flit not from this Heavenly boy!
I was in a Boys Choir from age 11 - 14 and we sang this on tour when I was 12. When we were singing This Little Babe it always felt to me like we were in a race to the finish when it would break up into rounds. This brings back such vivid and amazing memories for me.
Wow. It's amazing that they manage to sing it by heart at their young age. We are an a tad bit older choir and it was difficult to get the starts right even with it in front of our noses.
We did this one in school too + it was my favourite, but we had an organ instead of a harp which I think made it more dramatic. An excellent performance even with the accent. It's a tough song.
Thank you for posting this extraordinary performance.I was moved to tears by the beauty the joy and exhilaration of these young voices. And haunted too! Enchantment!
Had to stop and hunt down my password just to log on and say how Excellent this performance is. Wonderfully sung, played, directed, and recorded. Magnifique! Thank you x1000 for posting the video!
Magnifique! Felicitations beaux enfants! Après l'année que j'ai eue en 2020, je trouve que l'idée que "le parc de Satan sera pillé" est particulièrement bonne.
In 6th grade choir we sang this as we were reached at a college level now later on many people form my choir sing often at events can’t blame my teacher for teaching us at such a high level for such s young age
nous aussi le chantons depuis trois ans avec la maîtrise de la cathédrale du puy en Velay c'est très compliqué mais nous commençons à très bien le maîtriser
Very good ! This choir sang last december in "la cathédrale de Chartres" the ceremony of carol", it was a part of thier performance. You can see it on you tube : La Maîtrise de Radio France chante Britten, "A Ceremony of Carols" à la Cathédrale de Chartres. This acoustic of this place is fabulous ! Enjoy it !
I think it's fun to hear them singing in their French accents. The funny thing is that more than likely few of them know what any of that English gibberish means. Or they might, and I just don't know about the French school systems. That's a definite possibility as well.
willje227 believe it or not that’s a child’s opera basically. My teacher had a college education and is an amazing opera singer. She thought ya how to sing like opera singers :D
It's not a school but a "Maîtrise", and they're used to give all the translation when they work on a score because it's the most important thing to do when you sing. Maybe their accent is not perfect but who knows the good prononciation of old british ? Even nativ ppl don't agreee each other..
Wow! This piece is VERY difficult! I performed it with a college concert ensemble group. It must have been REALLY difficult for these young ones. Praise to them
CalicoCat1973 it's actually not that difficult the pitch is reachable for soprano and alto and the melody is practically the same it's just that if you mess up its very noticeable but if you nail it is heavenly
It's not all about the pitch. That's the easy part. I talking about the counterpoint--the overlapping melodies in Deo Gratsias. We, as an advanced college choir, had to work extra hard on it. We had to continuously resist the urge to unify.
One advantage children have over college students and older is that they are less likely to overthink getting their thythms and pitches perfect. That might make it less ironic that college ensembles struggle to perfect this piece when children nail it.
La maîtrise de radio France réalise un travail formidable depuis plusieurs dizaines d'années. C'est vrai, je trouve qu'elle est peu connue. Jetez un oeil sur le site arte web : elle exécute le livre vermeil de Montserrat : magnifique !
Actually learning this song in choir and doing it the exact way I love my choir teacher she’s very talented and amazing I can’t even tell you how much I’ve improved in the first 3 weeks of school
I sang this for choir... it was awesome I think just as good but we are American lol! These kids are really good! I can't believe they are only kids.. when I first heard this I thought they were my age lol!
I first saw this piece a few years ago performed by the Smiffenpoofs, an a capella performance group at Smith College in Northampton Massachusetts. This is an incredibly difficult piece of music. Bravo to these kids for pulling it off so well.
A very difficult piece of work to sing particularly for young French singers singing old English ! There could have been a bit more punch in the phrasing especially towards the end but still a very good effort from young non-native speakers. Well done.
I heard the Vienna Boy choir sing this, and I have to say: this performance is quite a bit better which, in my opinion, speaks to the difficulty of this piece.
Have a look on this vidéo : "A Ceremony of Carols" (extraits) sous la direction de Mikko Franck : the " maitrise de radio France" sang some carols in december 2016 in "la maison de radio France". It's very nice. If you like this choir and Poulenc's music, there is also " litanies à la Vierge Noire" Just beautifull ! Enjoy the music !
ah, britten i hope your enjoying yourself (also, handel, did you really think your Messiah could stop me from trying to sing it?) why am i talking to old dead people aaa

I've sang this in choir too
We would die all along though i loved it a lot
@Galactic It was originally composed for child singers, without tenor or bass parts.
This piece is hard, but there are much harder pieces harmonically.
@@isseirobinson1052 yes, but lyrically and rhythmically, it’s very tough. The canon parts are so close that it’s easy to be persuaded by one’s neighbor that you need to join them!
For my late Brendan, a Ceremony of Carols!!!!! 12/25/66 to 3/5/11 We love you in heaven forever

This Little Babe
This little bab so few days old
Is come to rifle Satan's fold;
All hell doth at his presence quake
Though he himself for cold do shake;
For in this week unarmed wise
The gates of hell he will surprise
With tears he fights and wins the field
His naked breast stads for a shield
His battering shot are babish cries
His arrows looks of weeping eyes
His martial ensigns Cold and Need
And feeble flesh his warrior's steed
His camp is pitched in a stall
His bulwark but a broken wall;
The crib his trench, haystalks his stakes
Of shepherds he his muster makes
And thus as sure his foe to wound
The angels' trumps a larum sound
My soul with Christ
Join thou in fight;
Stick to the tents
That he hath pight
Within his crib
Is surest ward;
This little Babe
Will by thy guard
If thou wilt foil thy
Foes with joy, then
Flit not from this
Heavenly boy!
Do you nown que it is singers french?

This is fabulous! Such wonderful allegro singing and such young voices!

performed this with my middle school choir! it was a difficult but fun performance as there were very few of us
We did this one in school too + it was my favourite, but we had an organ instead of a harp which I think made it more dramatic. An excellent performance even with the accent. It's a tough song.

J’aime trop cette musique 🎶 !!!!
i love how my choir sung this almost perfectly the first time we did it
This is sooo good. I've been listening this for like 3 hours right now. (I know that the video is only 1 minute and 36 second long :D)
Aww I can't memoriZe the song
In 6th grade choir we sang this as we were reached at a college level now later on many people form my choir sing often at events can’t blame my teacher for teaching us at such a high level for such s young age

true but most students in France can't speak English for shit

Well I was a part of this choir for 4 years. We worked a lot on phonetics and so on texts. And that’s only natural that we learn what it means.
Molto bravi, bravissimi i giovanetti.
Beautiful..

I agree, it's not the easiest thing I've ever sung! We sang it in my high school choir, and it makes your face ache to get the diction right!
Hard lmao a group of 6th 7th and 8th graders can do it why can’t a college group?

Wir haben des letztes Jahr zum Weihnachtskonzert gesungen. Ich muss es war ziemlich schwer aber wir haben es trotzdem geschafft😌

Excellent, IMO. It's a piece that you need to really focus on and they pulled it off!
Oh well done!
awesome technique
Have also a look on : arte web "le livre vermeil de Montserrat" Montpellier festival.
It's not at all the same repertoire, they are also beautifull.
Forte!
We never got this song right.

Professional : )
Good tempo!
the only choral piece with calculated delays done by the singers.....it ranks with Carl Orf.........
