Airports require vast amounts of space and it is best to have runways roughly aligned with prevailing winds - of course, not every vagary can be catered for, but there are often runways in two or three directions to allow take-offs and landings into the wind. Runways may also be duplicated. Additionally, they need space for terminal buildings, hangars and maintenance, storage areas, carparks. Airports also need to be on very flat ground where possible. A runway with a gradient is not ideal for landing and taking off in difficult conditions. Runways also have to have no camber or cross-gradient. This makes drainage difficult, but makes for safer landing. Imagine landing on a tilted runway with a gusty crosswind - it might just tip the aircraft right off its undercarriage!
