RUclips has come along way. This video shows just how professional an amateur “teacher” can be in a video. Kudos to you. If you aren’t a professional teacher somewhere, you should be. It would be a waste not to be teaching in a real life, “live” classroom. You have talent plus.
Excellent tips, very well explained. Thank you. i know what my problem is. I am not leaving myself enough "room" and I am not relaxing waiting for the painting to be what I want to be. i need to slow down at the blocking stage and believe in my skills that I can get the look I want at the final stages. You are good at teaching Andrew.
Hey Jola, remember that having a DESIGN is vital to the success of your painting. Skill alone won't do it, you must plan for the road ahead. Of course, yes, believe in yourself 100% but you must know where you are going. Know what I mean? Cheers for the comment. :)
Another excellent video Andrew. I have been blocking in on my paintings, but you have opened my eyes as to why it is important to be loose and get the paint on the canvas without getting bogged down with details. Who know ??!! Thanks Andrew
Hello Andrew! Again what an incredibly detailed and helpful demonstration of technique. I went to community college and took some art classes years ago and learned barley a fraction of what I've learned from the work you've published here on YT. I must speak for many when I say this stuff is invaluable to us. I've had a lot of trouble self teaching myself with oil, esp the beginning (Block in) and middle stages of a painting, be it digital or traditional. I find myself getting discouraged after the block in stage. Not fully knowing how to build up the proper technique of establishing the mid range details. I do however feel I excel in the final detail stage... just hard for me to get there. Anyways, keep these things coming you have a cult following!!
Love your channel. Your videos are really quite informative. Years ago I always skipped blocking in and many other vital steps in the painting process that I can't imagine skipping today. Thank you for sharing your excellent talent as a teacher as well as an artist.
Thanks for the great video. Your videos have helped me move away from just painting from photos and getting more creative. I have a long way to go but am having more fun. Also, please continue adding links to the brushes you use. It's very helpful.
Thanks for putting all these great videos out! I was hoping that one day you could do a video about brush management during the painting process... i.e. when do you change your brushes in the process and how do you keep your palette from becoming mud? I love seeing the process of the paint going on canvas, but would love to see what's going on technically with the palette at the same time. I have never been able to find any good instruction about the fundamental mechanics of painting.
Andrew, I just found you and your channel. Well, you are doing a great job so far. You have done very well with the generation of the video. You do a great job on the information and the narration. I first viewed your video on the "self taught / art school". This is the second and a pleasure to view. Andrew, you are doing great. "I did subscribe so I don't miss any future videos. I will check out the past ones.
Hi Andrew. Thanks for making these videos. They're so helpful. I struggle to know what paint consistency I should be using. Thank you for saying that you're using liquin in a 2 parts paint to 1 part liquin ratio. Very useful.
Love your videos Andrew! Can you address composition in ocean paintings? What do you consider when considering how you lead your viewers eye? When using cliffs, rocks, sand and water how do you know what to put in and leave out......There is so much to look at as is in any landscape. Looking forward to more lessons.
Hey Candace, I will be making more videos about composition soon. In the meantime, check out my Painting the Southwest Seascape tutorial www.andrewtischler.com/shop/ you may find what you're looking for! :)
as always " impressed " i don't know why but these days i m really addicted to ur videos , I can't get enough of them , the quality , lighting , the way u explain it , even if i never experienced oil painting because I m still learning to sketch , but I have a question how much time does it take u to finish a painting !? more specifically oceans and portrait !
Hahah! Cheers Imane. :) much appreciated. The time it takes to finish a painting depends entirely on the subject and size. This particular painting in this video, will take around 2 - 3 weeks.
I enjoyed watching the brushstrokes in the blocking-in! I was fascinated by your color choices while referring to a b/w photo. Q: During your earlier years as a artist what helped you "see" color and their variations from life or photos and then translate them into oil paint colors to apply to canvas? I'm good with mixing to create different colors with the basics but seeing and recognizing colors in the subject (life or photos) is quite a challenge for me. Hope you understand what I mean. :) Well done again, Andrew! ;)
Andrew, I always want to 'like' your wonderful videos, but can never find the 'button'. Just letting you know that I'm following you very closely, you are so inspiring and you have improved my art enormously. Thank you, thank you, thank you. Can't wait for the next one. :-)
Thank you, Andrew, and sorry, I'd forgotten it was called an icon! Anyway, I found it. I think I'd been looking for a blue one, as on Facebook, but on my computer this icon is grey so it didn't register with me!! Not the smartest computer person on the planet - far from it!!!! No need to reply. I'll remember in future. :-)
Hey Andrew, I am following your work for along time. In this video you use cobalt teal. I am from South Africa & can't find it here. Beautiful color! But what can I use instead of the cobalt teal? I promised myself to try a Seascape, thank you so much for all the wonderful tutorials. Anphia
No, I don't use this method. THat's not to say it's not a good way to go, I just prefer keeping to the oils. Some say it can be easier with the block in, working with acrylics, and can save on costs, because oils generally are more expensive.
Hi Andrew, I like your painting so much and every time i watch i inspired from you. I want to learn from you how to paint realistic trees . Please do a video for it . Thanks
Great stuff! Do a video where you explain composition and those vectors as you call them to lead the eye. I've read a whole lot on the subject but it's still abstract for me.
Great tutorial many thanks indeed , just a quick question you said you need to block it in before the paint dry's how come it dries so fast if it is Oil paint ?
A perfect video as always. I wish I had seen you work years ago as I would be so much better by now. I have been doing very detailed drawings on my canvas and going straight in with detail for about 20yrs. As I taught myself I didn't know any better. Now since following you I can see a big difference in my work it is more alive somehow. Even my husband who has always been ultra critical of everything I do to, - his excuse is it helps me improve- has noticed that my work has gone up a notch. Thank you.
Andrew I have purchased your lessons on painting the coastline and intend to get more. You are truly amazing and generous with your talent. One question...I would love to follow along on this painting as it is ....do you have the reference photo anywhere for this?
OK. I had not watched the modelling video and now I get what you are saying about the reference photo. Duh. Lesson learned - watch ALL the videos first.
Hi Andrew, thank you again for such wonderful videos....as always great painting! Would it be possible to make a demo in how to paint copper? Thank you :)
Aha! Yes, this could be because of a stark contrast or different texture of the subject to background. May I suggest that you take a look at my full tutorials on portraits. You will no doubt get some tips there! www.andrewtischler.com/shop/
Interesting Australian, American, English accent. Interesting video too, thanks! This is just the right sort of video to encourage beginners to have a go, like me. Hope you post one of how to finish the painting. As Bradley has mentioned your reference is black and white and looks likes like a copy of one of your paintings. Does the tonal black and white help with blocking in and would you recommend this for beginners?
Yeah, I will post the next two phases of this painting in particular soon. The drawing is a tonal study produced in photoshop, using a wacom tablet and stylus. It's just to help guide me with the composition.
Hi Andrew, since you taught everyone about blocking in, could you please produce a session on Values? This is probably the biggest hurdle for all the self-taught painters because all they get is a gray value card that doesn't help to identify the relationship between value scales on a surface (eye training I mean). Some areas become more sunk-in because an unnecessary darker color was used, whereas a very light color was applied to an area which perhaps needs a value three steps below. You already highlighted this on your color mixing video but it perhaps needs a separate chapter.
Cheers Niki! There will be loads of rewards for folks, and I am sure that people will find it beneficial, and it will help us with more ambitious productions! WIN-WIN!
Thankyou so much . I realy realy appreciate your videos and the way you explain things. The liquin I have never used before. If you are using liquin does that mean you cannot use linseed and turps. (Any fat over lean principles) I am also trying a black and white tonal value painting, so would you sepia the canvas for this too. Cheers
Hi Jenny, I was recently talking to an art restorer about this. I have not tried but according to him, you could layer over dried liquin with a layer of turps and linseed medium, but not the other way around. The idea is, that once the surface has dried, that forms the stable foundation for which to layer upon. Linseed will continue to shift and move, and if this is trapped under dried liquin, then cracking and surface crawl can occur. So you want to get that order right!
Thank you, that does make sense. I found your mediums video and been watching a few more as I am new to your subscription. Thank you for the wonderful demos, Hoping you can do one on glazing in several layers and what to use and also the paint ,medium ratios . I woud like to do some very thin layers with very little paint but not sure about mediums to use and how stable it would be. Currently using linseed and turps but takes forever to dry. Would love if you would make a video on this subject in the future. Cheers.
Your colors are amazing “ all the painting you do outside help you relate to what your actually painting? Just wondering how your color palette gets to be that precise “ lots of study in the field help that when painting landscape?
Hi Andrew, thanks so much, I love watching you work. I am just getting started in oils and wondering what ratios you of the sienna, liquin and turpentine to prime the canvas? Also, do you ever use a layer of gesso underneath?
Hi Andrew, I absolutely love your you tube channel and have learned so much from you... So from e bottom of my heart ..."thank you". Can I please ask Do you block in in oil or acrylic?

Your enthusiastic teaching is powerful, and instructive.. This is opening new horizons, bigger waves. Well done and thank you.
Andrew is the best!! Great speech patterns with this man, and, as such, an excellent educator!!
Fabulous Andrew, you're a true pro, I can see how using a tonal reference helps you block in and not get bogged down in detail, very helpful
Excellent tips, very well explained. Thank you. i know what my problem is. A valued lesson. I can do flat seas with some motion but up close intimidates. The strength of the sea cannot be fudged so…an advanced skill. Thanks

Andrew I have purchased your lessons on painting the coastline and intend to get more. You are truly amazing and generous with your talent. One question...I would love to follow along on this painting as it is ....do you have the reference photo anywhere for this?
As the tutorial states, I composed this painting from many pictures. You have the single best resource on how I made the painting.:)
Sorry I must have missed that bit. Many thanks for taking time to reply.
OK. I had not watched the modelling video and now I get what you are saying about the reference photo. Duh. Lesson learned - watch ALL the videos first.
Very nice, I would like to get around, and when the next issue of portrait painting, and whether it will be?
And I would like to thank you for the lessons you give)
Sorry I do not know English well(
More portraits are on the way soon!
Hi Andrew, thank you again for such wonderful videos....as always great painting!

It's a wonderful work.
I respect you very much.
멋진 작품입니다.

Thanks for sharing Andrew. I was wondering if you could share some ideas to prevent a cut out look when doing portraits.
Aha! Yes, this could be because of a stark contrast or different texture of the subject to background. May I suggest that you take a look at my full tutorials on portraits. You will no doubt get some tips there! www.andrewtischler.com/shop/
Softening the edges in the face sporadically has been helpful for me. Wonder how Andrew handles it. :)

Awesome Andrew does it again. Curious to know what music/bands do you listen to while you paint?
Audiobooks and podcasts mainly. Audible is the best. You can learn while you paint. I listen to stuff on business, motivation, marketing and history.
What would be a substitute for a cobalt teal? Can it be reproduced with other colors on the pallet?
great video !! thank you for sharing. I would like to know why work with a references in black and White ?
This was a digital drawing that I produced in Photoshop first, I just went for a tonal sketch, no colour.
Andrew Tischler thank you for your request. sorry for my english I'm french.
I Just want to that your work is inspiring.

Hi Andrew, I absolutely love your you tube channel and have learned so much from you... So from e bottom of my heart ..."thank you". Can I please ask Do you block in in oil or acrylic?
Hi Maria!
I work pretty much exclusively in oils. So the block in you see here is Oils.
You have a paint podcast talking about oil paints and acrylic paint and. ?
u r doing a great job 👌👍
Prabhakar Sharma פ
Whats the difference if i put oil paint as base and not acrylic ?
Do you have a video of the details of this painting? It's beautiful!
It's coming, the modeling faze is being edited now
Hi Andrew great vid.Any plans for one on clouds? Cheers.
Yes...PLANS! I just need to put the plan into action. Soon... soooooon!

Thanks!
Hey Andrew. Your works are really amazing. Your tutorials are really helpful. Thank you for all the videos you share.
Just few questions though. You layer all your canvas with burnt sienna before painting. Any difference it makes while painting? How much thick must the layer be?
Apply the sienna very thinly. It have so be dry first before you start painting too. It makes a difference to the perceived colours as you blocking, and because it's a mid-tone by nature, it helps with your light dynamic in the paintings, highlights and shadow read better by comparison. :)
Thank you so much for the help Andrew. Looking forward to your new videos. :)
