The composer of this particular track is Yukihiro Jindo, one of Falcom's pillars in terms of music. The Ys franchise is full of amazing music, I highly recommend listening to "Genesis Beyond the Beginning" from Ys Origin which is one the greatest Ys soundtracks out there
Dana quickly turned out to be one of my favorite characters from the series, aside from Adol. Her backstory, the alternative forms, her mood (and Brianna Knickerbocker voicing her) everything flows so well. And many songs from this soundtrack are still ingrained in my mind. I just platinum the game finally after 90 hours lol. Gotta say my favorite piece of dialogue was Sahad: I nearly wet myself Ricotta & Laxia: You better Not(Laxia: Or Else!) Dana: *Nervous Laughter*
Words cannot express how much joy I have from you listening to and analyzing another Ys VIII song. As you and many others have said, the soundtracks for Ys VIII and other Falcom games are beyond outstanding, and I wish the series had more of a spotlight, given how extensive its history is in the video game world. For me, personally, Ys VIII was a video game experience that I will never forget. This and the very similar-sounding title screen track gave me this feeling like "I'm in for one of the most emotional video game experiences of my life, aren't I?" A thought which I have only had once before with the original Xenoblade Chronicles and its title screen music. I consider both to be my favorite games of all-time. Thank you once again for analyzing this track, Marco, and for all of your hard work these past many months. Your growth and your community forming is a testament to how far you've come, and how hard you're working to bring forth all of this wonderful music to others. Keep at it! We'll be with you the entire way.
From this series you can always expect Adol to crash a ship, break some hearts, lose a sword, fight some god and have amazing music. Love that you're reacting to Ys, one of my favorite series out there when it comes to music, story and gameplay.
Adol never really breaks any hearts, cause while we can clearly see from body language and the dialogue the girls are falling for him, the vast majority of them never actually confess and Adol almost never acknowledges it (in dialogue). Adol always leaves for new adventures on good terms, promising to visit again at some point.
YES MARCO FINALLY YOU REACHED UNPOPULAR GAME WITH AMAZING MUSIC. YS has many great OSTs like the Legend of Heroes and I love all of them! Ah, btw, the ending of this YS 8 series sounds more heartbreaking than the opening. Hope you can listen to their game soundtracks from The Legend of Heroes (Cold Steel), Code Vein, and God Eater, etc.
Ys series are half a year older then Final Fantasy, by the way. Also - have you heard Ys Origins and Ys Seven opening/main themes? Those games can look a bit outdated (and mechanics are old), but they are still really good. Ys Chronicles music was amazing too - it's modern sound of old MIDI melodies brought so many nostalgia. And the theme of Godesses (who are just mortals from very advanced civilisation, not really godlike) - hits much harder too, especially considering through what Adol (and we as players) came through to found all the notes for that melody, for it to be played again and fix everything.
Ys Seven really had incredible music, Vacant Interference is the music of the first boss encounter in the game and to this day i still listen to it because it is still insanely good !
You look so animated when you're listening and following the music, it's great LOL The way the simplicity of the composition and the instruments come together to create a voice you can actually pantomime (and probably make up lyrics to) is wonderful!
I played this game years ago but didn't call the music. But watching your video a memory came back of me sitting with the controller in my hands just vibing to this track. Thank you.
YES YES YES Marco finally dives into Falcom's music Can't wait for Marco to listen to Eiyuu Densetsu (The Legend of Heroes) Soundtracks Also, the main theme progression symbolize the progression story of YS VIII too It's amazing, the emotion you feel throughout the game was already spoiled from the main theme I cleared YS VIII and reached the true ending which all these different progression of the same notes makes sense to it Falcom makes great games, people should play their games and invest in how they build their world
I'm personally really hoping he'll give "Atrocious Raid" (or the Super Arrange Version" a listen. It may be the first track played in the actual game (Trails of Cold Steel 1), but it's also one of my favorite Falcom tracks in general.
Falcom is one of my favourite game developers and the Ys and Trails soundtracks are absolutely amazing! I hope you will have the time to check out the Trails series aswell, as there are also some absolutely beautiful tracks, from slow paced, melancholy to epic boss theme movements!
Ys 8 was the beginning of my love for the Ys series. After finishing it, I wound up playing the remaining games in for the most part release order. However, feel free to do some research to decide which other Ys games you want to play. The best thing about Ys games is that except for Ys 1 & 2 and Origins, the games are stand-alone in terms of story. They do sprinkle in references/cameos from previous games but that is about it.
Lacrimosa of Dana, ah yes, i remember the first time i played through the Y's VIII. finally getting through to the end and it made me tear up. For me, it seems to represent life in its never ending cycle, the life that encompasses all Just, one same life seen in different eyes, emotional states, aspects of it. And then in one version of it from focusing on life in a grand scale, it suddenly focuses on just one person each. Suddenly it's personal, miniscule. Then suddenly it's just Dana, you start to process her thoughts, emotions, her duty, her vulnerabilities, both her power and helplessness, what you want to happen vs what needs to happen. This piece and its variants is a roller coaster of emotions but it always ends with one thing for me, a bittersweet and wholly grateful "Thank you" .
The soundtrack to Ys VIII is just spectacular. It's the only video game soundtrack I even went out of my way to purchase on vinyl. So many of the tracks are really well-composed and memorable, spanning a wide range of genres and styles, from the classically inspired main theme to the obviously Heavy Metal-inspired "Gens D'Armes"
I didn't know you played the Ys series, you just made my day Marco. As if you weren't enough of a legend already. Ys 8 is still my favorite to this day, and I'm very much looking forward to 10 coming out soon in Japan for which I have very high expectations based on trailers. This track is very special to me ;w; glad to see it on the channel.
Oh god yes, I love the Ys games. They have such great soundtracks, lots of j-rock themes and high energy stuff in there too. And I feel you on YsVIII, it became my favorite one of them.
Ys VIII is such a wonderful game through and through. I can listen to the whole OST from start to end and not want to skip anything. Always love to see some Falcom love, would love more.
You might enjoy listening to the Ys 1&2 soundtracks across the dozens of systems it has been released on. They're a great showcase of the evolution of sound hardware and music in games from the original Japanese PC-88, PC-98, Sharp X1, and Fujitsu FM-7 computers in 1987 to the first CD games console, the TurboGrafx-CD in 1989 using Redbook audio for the music, all the way to the modern releases on Sony PSP and Windows PC with Ys 1&2 Chronicles
I discovered Ys on a whim w. Ys VIII and after finishing that game and Ys IX I found a new favorite game series. The music definitely does the game justice when it comes to setting the tone of the game
Just finished the game after 105 hrs cause i did all the side content and wow.. i feel absolutely destroyed after the true ending, the music is perfect, can't wait to get into YS 9.
Ys VIII was the first of the Ys series I’ve ever played and I gotta say the music is phenomenal. I’ve finished Ys IX since then, and I’m excited for the next game in the series.
I first played a ys game when I was probably way too young. A lot of the story flew over my head, but I remember it made me cry. I never touched the series again after finishing the game.
My friend introduced me to this game and even though I knew about 1/3-2/3 of the story before starting I still loved it amd was able to make it my own game.
Ys will be a major gateway into Falcom's other music, especially the Legend of Heroes: Trails series. A lot of great gems, especially in the Trails in the Sky trilogy. You are in for a wild ride if you get into those. Also, there are two versions to the main Lacrimosa theme in this game. The other version doesn't have the same explosive elements as this version and is more somber.
I first found out about the Ys series back in 2007 or 2008 when I downloaded Ys Book 1 and 2 for the Nintendo Wii Virtual Console back in the day. Most people know of Squaresoft for Final Fantasy, Enix for Dragon Quest, Nintendo for Legend of Zelda, a fair few would know SEGA for Phantasy Star but Falcom with Ys series have been around almost as far back as that same time period yet their JRPGs never get mentioned by most gamers and only a few JRPG fans know of how important that series is for Japanese Games. I have got Ys 8 on the PS Vita so I know how epic that opening theme is.
Ah finally one of the series that successfully make me cry in the middle of the playthrough, also the version with the lyric is also good both in english version and japanese version. Love Falcom and its series of Ys and Legend of Heroes
I dont know ANYTHING about Ys and I know very little about music but listening to this track somehow made me think of Once Upon a December in both structure and just the general buildup, the notes also have this same tinge of familiarity I couldn't quite explain it. Regardless, a beautiful piece!
personally I like 8 over 9. but Memories of Celceta (IV) holds a special place for me. I actually have both that map and the world map hanging behind me.
glad you only picked it up now. If you'd seen it when they first released it in English you've probably have been as horrified by the incomprehensible translation as the rest of us. The entire game got a complete second translation after that.
Oh yeah, time for Marco to uncover the hidden gem that is Falcom and its music. Ys VIII alone has a spectacular ost as does the other Ys games, and along side the Legends of Heroes series as well there is a mountain of great music
This reminds me of how great this game is. If my gaming backlog wasn't so long I'd probably reinstall it right now. I still vividly remember running around in the night collecting flowers while being chased by a pack of dinosaurs and avoiding rocks being hurled by gorillas as Night Survivor plays in the background. Falcom games are famous for having amazing music. Hope to see more videos covering it. Not to sound like a shill but since we are on the topic of Falcom games... I believe that there's a game that gets unfairly overlooked - Tokyo Xanadu. It's not nearly as talked about as their Trails and Ys series. And of course the music is excellent, as you might expect. Moreover, it often goes on sale for around $12, which is a total steal.
If you haven't already, you should go back and check out the original soundtrack to Ys I & II (the PC Engine version is the original). For late 80s to early 90s, they were way ahead of their pack in both sound quality and emotion for a video game soundtrack.
Well, it's not just a lacrimosa. It's the Lacrimosa of Dana. And I think this track does a good job covering her story in this game. It's filled with despair and turmoil, but also hope and her own strong will.
This was my gateway game for Ys. I tried out the demo on PS4 and it made me want to play through the entire thing. So I did and got the best ending. I'm only one trophy away from getting the platinum and I don't think I'm emotionally ready to go through it again. Anyway, you should react to Iclucian Dance. That's my favorite.
This main theme is such a perfect picture of everything that constitutes Ys VIII Or Dana herself. Its sad but hopeful nonetheless, Its tragic, heroic and adventurous, powerful yet very delicate. Its full of love and tenderness. So yeah! Its Dana! Such a grandiose main theme for Falcom's Magnum Opus and my personal favorite game of all time. :D I freakin love this theme. Also shoutouts to Dana Iclusia which is IMO one of the greatest female protagonist ever made for videogames.
Have you ever looked into the works of Micheal McCann? He composed for the new Deus Ex games and XCOM Enemy Unknown. He does a lot of interesting things when it comes to layering, especially with his work on the Deus Ex games.
I am not very good at discerning the intent behind music, but this whole theme... It kind of sounds like, finding triumph and joy through sadness and despair.
Oh man, I don't know if you saw the trailers for Ys X yet, but I'm unbelievably excited for its release in the West. It probably won't happen until 2024 but they had the genius idea to give Adol a female partner in it and the whole game is played by controlling the duo seamlessly both in combat and exploration. The music looks like it will be great as well too !
The Ys games are amazing, glad you picked them up! If you're enjoying them I'd also like to Recomend the developer, Nihon Falcom's, other primary series, The Legend of Heroes: Trails (Also known as Kiseki). It's a turn based JRPG series, unlike Ys which is an action RPG, so it's a bit longer but the worldbuilding, music on par with the amazingness that is the Ys soundtracks, and character writing make it worth the length in my opinion.
Welcome to the Falcom games, some of the most underrated jrgp's of all time. Absolutely will recommend Cold Steel series, especially for story, characters and of course - music.
Another series you should probably check out from the same developer is the trails series. Starting from trails in the sky all the way to the most recent trails of reverie
I still think Dana had the strongest story in recent Ys titles. Even though the side characters were flat, the core storyline was definitely gripping. It's reflected in this main theme too tbh.
Same. Though honestly story is really kinda weak and basic for most part in Ys. There's only 2 that really stand out. One is Ys VIII... but mostly the story centered around Dana. The other one is Ys Origin's 3rd character's story. For all the other games I think it's kinda passable or meh. Well, I do think Ys 1 & 2 have potential for a really great story, but the medium was kinda restricting. Perhaps if they receive a full blown modern remake I guess.
@@thenonexistinghero Yeah, for Falcom, their story-heavy titles are more centred around the kiseki side of things. Still, Dana gave me the same chills.
I'm not a huge fan of Falcom music, but for some reason this was one of the soundtracks that have stuck with me. My favourite Falcom OST is still Gurumin, but Ys 8 holds a special place for unexpectedly catching my ears.
Love this one. Marco please listen Castlevania and Bloodstained. I think you would love it's music too. Castlevania Symphony of the Night was my first exposure to classical music in videogames 24 years ago and why I love it to this day. I recommend Wood Carving Partita, Dance of Pales or horror wise Death Ballad from SOTN. Luxurious Overture, Bibliotheca Ex Machina, Gears of Fortune from Bloodstained. (I actually have a feeling that Fontaine from Genshin is going to sound a lot like Bloodstained too aside from french inspired).
If you haven't seen it, here is a playlist of an album that was created by the falcom sound team for this game which is basically a remaster of many songs found in game ruclips.net/video/JfBAgBvKsF8/видео.html
Man, I would love you to check out Heroes of Might and Magic music. There's even a full blown symphonic orchestra playing songs from those games - Heroes Orchestra!
Please, review the track "OCEANOS", from this soundtrack. It's like the best of both the orchestral and rock worlds. The guitars REALLY sing in that track.
Ys has great music, though I personally prefer the Oath in Felghana tracks because it's a remaster of the SNES Ys 3 music I played growing up. I'd love to see you listen to tracks and compare something like Eldam Mountains from the original Ys 3 soundtrack against "Steeling the Will to Fight" from Oath in Felghana. Complete side note, but maybe a few tracks from Grime and Alex Roe. "Cenotaph City" and the follow up track "The Final Performance" are fantastic, but most of the soundtrack is very well done.
Thanks for the video, I would like to recommend you the Main theme from super smash bros Brawl, Nobuo Uematsu is the composer, with the Soprano Oriko Takahashi and the Tenor Ken Nishikiori they did an excellent job.
I don't wanna be "That guy" but i would love to see your reaction to gothic 3 music, i personally love that game and music, and i hope that you would give a more insightful take on what's happening from your point of view. love the content and i hope to see more, cheers.
Hey you should really check out the ost from the game blasphemous like Baile de Violetas which is remixed with multiple different instruments Also highly recommend the game itself
please give a listen sometime to Fire Emblem Engage: Fell Xenologue OST - Mirrored Engage [Final Battle]! It is by far such a beautiful piece and rendition of a fire emblem song and is by far and above my favorite musical piece in all of media. Slight spoilers context: this plays in a ruined version of the somniel that used to serve as a safe haven for the player unit and now left in ruins as each platform becomes a hazard for the player if you don't get out in time. Including attacks that can and WILL one hit kill any unit in its path.
hey Marco! I thought that since you enjoy classic music you should check out PT-1x12 from the Atomic Heart soundtrack. while the song itself isn't necessarily classic its a play on it that I think you would really like :)
Hey marco! Please listen to Deep Rock Galactics Run! and Dance of the dreadnought (as well as other popular tracks) Please! the music is very good and you cant find anyone reacting to DRGs music nowdays :D
The composer of this particular track is Yukihiro Jindo, one of Falcom's pillars in terms of music. The Ys franchise is full of amazing music, I highly recommend listening to "Genesis Beyond the Beginning" from Ys Origin which is one the greatest Ys soundtracks out there
I second this!
YS8 is one of the few games where I ended up just sitting listening to the main theme for a few minutes every time before playing.
Dana quickly turned out to be one of my favorite characters from the series, aside from Adol. Her backstory, the alternative forms, her mood (and Brianna Knickerbocker voicing her) everything flows so well. And many songs from this soundtrack are still ingrained in my mind.
That, and both Hummel and Ricotta doing their high five 😂
I just platinum the game finally after 90 hours lol. Gotta say my favorite piece of dialogue was
Sahad: I nearly wet myself
Ricotta & Laxia: You better Not(Laxia: Or Else!)
Dana: *Nervous Laughter*

that violin part is soooooo strong its my most favorite piece in this god made ost
From this series you can always expect Adol to crash a ship, break some hearts, lose a sword, fight some god and have amazing music. Love that you're reacting to Ys, one of my favorite series out there when it comes to music, story and gameplay.
Ys Ix is one of the stories that Adol did not crash a ship,, 😂
@@nuhurrahman2861 He crashed a society instead. It has to count right? Adol coming in with those #LifeGoals really do be hitting different.
@@nuhurrahman2861yeah,but not that far from getting caught by local police or guard(since Ys V)

Ys 9 ending stomps any Ys track imo. Dandelion Journey is peak music
You're right ... the ending of Ys VIII was gut wrenching.
One step closer to reviewing Falcom's Trails music, I see.
Can't wait!
Trail Cold Steel 1's music was peak, cant say the same for 2,3 and 4 though

and now with a Falcom game reaction, it's time for Trails fans to flood with Kiseki series OST suggestions
YYYEEEEESSS finally you get to Ys
Try God Eater music too pls 🙏
Well, it's not just a lacrimosa. It's the Lacrimosa of Dana. And I think this track does a good job covering her story in this game. It's filled with despair and turmoil, but also hope and her own strong will.
correct!
It kind of sounds like, finding triumph and joy through sadness and despair.
my no 1 jrpg series ever
Game (and soundtrack) fun.
Soooo good...god like theme
How do you always bring such great music
Sunshine Coastline next?
You should react to the "barotrauma" music, i recommend alien syndicate as it sums the game pretty well, sonars sounds turned to music
Dreaming from Ys Chronicles is dope
May I recommend "Silver Sky" by NANO, from the Arpeggio of Blue Steel sountrack?
You should definitely check out the nusic from the legend of heroes
Ys has great music, though I personally prefer the Oath in Felghana tracks because it's a remaster of the SNES Ys 3 music I played growing up. I'd love to see you listen to tracks and compare something like Eldam Mountains from the original Ys 3 soundtrack against "Steeling the Will to Fight" from Oath in Felghana.
Complete side note, but maybe a few tracks from Grime and Alex Roe. "Cenotaph City" and the follow up track "The Final Performance" are fantastic, but most of the soundtrack is very well done.
If you like YS music definitely check out the Trails series made by Falcom aswell. Some of the best game music ever in those games
oh my dude please tell the people about vanishing trails from ys 8 PLEASE!
Have you ever tried listening to the Super Ultimate Arranged version or any other versions 😏
I recommend you listen to Type-0 from FF Type-0
Hey you should really check out the ost from the game blasphemous like Baile de Violetas which is remixed with multiple different instruments
Also highly recommend the game itself
I hope someday you'll get a chance to play or at least listen to the GRIS soundtrack, it has a very similar motif behind it as these pieces
please give a listen sometime to Fire Emblem Engage: Fell Xenologue OST - Mirrored Engage [Final Battle]!
It is by far such a beautiful piece and rendition of a fire emblem song and is by far and above my favorite musical piece in all of media.
Slight spoilers context:
this plays in a ruined version of the somniel that used to serve as a safe haven for the player unit and now left in ruins as each platform becomes a hazard for the player if you don't get out in time. Including attacks that can and WILL one hit kill any unit in its path.
I will pass on the wisdom given to me years ago: There are no bad Ys music tracks...only ones that are less awesome than the others.
