This was a really really fun listen. Thank you for taking the time to review the music of this game. This game is brought me more happiness than almost any media experience I've ever had. It's always cool to see fellow musicians also enjoying it.
4:57:24 That's precisely what is happening. The game starts mostly on Adol with visions of Dana, then it constantly switches the character you are playing from Adol to Dana and vice versa, they meet around the middle of the game, and finally at the end they have to say goodbye to each other. I do think the Violin and Cello represent them both really well.
Despite them parting ways (which is not a new thing to Adol, having to part ways with implied love interests), it doesn't feel depressing though. Given what you learn about Adol in Lacrimosa, there is an implication that they will eventually meet again, (probably in his last adventure where he goes to the North Pole and is never seen or heard from again).
I wanted to explain the premise of the Ys games incase you wanted to know without any spoilers. I’m glad to see Dan checking out a Falcom game and starting with one of their best ones too, they’ve been creating great music for decades. Hopefully we’ll be seeing some music from the Trails series soon too.
Awesome OST, appreciate the music theory analysis as always too! My favorite pieces from the OST are probably "Lacrimosa of Dana", "Sunshine Coastline" and "Next Step Toward The Unknown". Though, I really love so many of the pieces from this OST. I actually found out about the entire Ys series because I randomly bumped into Sunshine Coastline on youtube. Fast forward to now and I have played almost every game in the long running series. My favorite Ys soundtrack overall probably goes to Ys: The Oath in Felghana. Jindo did an amazing job arranging the classic tracks from Ys 3, the he game of which The Oath in Felghana is a remake of.
4:04:12 Your impression of Garden of Celen was spot on! It is a small, beautiful but ruined garden that acts like a keystone to the late-game story with so much historical significance in the in-game world. Looking around the area and hearing this track, you can immediately feel the weight of the past and the heavy emotions of those who had come to that location before. Then it transitions to the Dana leitmotif and the parallel major you talked about which gives a sense of hope.
This game had such high octane exploration and combat hah super interesting to see a critical eye applied to the musical structure of some of these tracks without all those narc monsters in the way
Literally finished the game yesterday but damn bro when i first heard A to Z and Iclucian Dance man i was amazed people dont give video game music enough attention
I cheered when the scheduled stream popped up on my front page! This game is in my Top 2 games of all time and this was so cool to see! The Ys 8 OST really stuck with me which is surprising since I don't usually vibe with the general rock style of music in games. SUNSHINE COASTLINE IS MY FAVORITE TRACK IN THE GAME AAAAAHHHHHHHH
Usually when I see a music reaction video, the youtuber is just very emotional about how 'awesome' the piece is, which is nice and all, but doesn't really add much beyond that. But your input added so much to the experience! Ys 8 is one of my favorite games and soundtracks, but your musical expertise gave me a greater appreciation for it all, even the tracks I just kind of glossed over. Thanks!
Thank you so much for reacting to this game’s soundtrack, it’s really a hidden gem. I knew nothing about music theory going into this video but your explanations were still very comprehendible so I appreciate that as well. Made me realize how much thought and care goes into making each track special.
It's really hard to say which is my favorite. Partially because the ost is amazing, but also because Falcom keeps making more arrangements and remixes of their OSTs. There was another Ys 8 super ultimate with more songs, and their latest Falcom Boss Rush album has more remixed Ys 8 tracks. Sad I couldn't catch much live, but glad to see you enjoyed it!
Another thing I’d like to mention is that indeed there is theme A “Lacrimosa of Dana” that is used in many of the tracks of this OST (with my favorite use of it being in “Volitional Decision”), but there is also what you could call theme B with it being “Dana” (you can hear it at 3:06:27 ) which can also be heard in numerous other tracks like “the sibylline road”, “Yesterday in Eternia”, “Royal Capital Aigius” and “The Leaning Tower Baja” between others.
Big Ys VIII fan here, including its soundtrack. One thing I never realized about Deadly Temptation until I listened through it on this video was the thematic material in the bassline of the chorus (15:02). The first time through, it does a chromatic descent all the way down to raised 4, and then brings it back to 5 (1 -> raised 7 -> natural 7 -> raised 6 -> natural 6 -> 5 -> raised 4 -> 5). Then it goes through that pattern again, but swaps out the ending for a iv -> V -> i progression to end out the phrase. That bassline is used all the time in Theme A, even as early as the opening theme. I've usually been able to catch the thematic material when it comes to melodies on past listens of the soundtrack, but it's fun finding other ways these themes are weaved throughout everything!
I'd like to provide my analysis for the themes heard in 5:06:48 (Riddles of the Labyrinth). 5:07:41 You said "We've heard these themes before." These themes seem to be from 1:48:17 (Yesterday in Eternia, AKA the town theme), which is an important theme also heard in 3:06:59 (Dana). It's possible I'm wrong and the theme from the next track mentioned is heard instead. 5:08:18 is the theme from A Footprint in the Wet Sand 55:29. Context for the track Riddles of the Labyrinth. Like with A Footprint in the Wet Sand, you are diving deep in exploration when Riddles of the Labyrinth plays, except instead of roaming sandy beaches, you are navigating and fighting your way through dungeons. It's also important to mention that you are playing as Dana solo, and that's why it makes sense that we hear one of her themes (Yesterday in Eternia/Dana). Now I'm going to talk a bit about 3:06:27 (Dana). 1:51:43 (Sibylline Road) and 1:48:17 (Yesterday in Eternia) each have one of the important themes of Dana. It's cool to mention that in the game, you actually hear the former two tracks before the track Dana plays. So by the time Dana is played, you are already familiar with the themes it's comprised of. And, finally, I don't need to talk about theme A because it's heard in many places in the OST and you were excellent at identifying the theme when it was heard. But I will point out the coolest instance of it which is heard at 4:20:29. Anyway, that's enough of my raving.
I love all these tracks a *LOT* so it's practically impossible to select one song that rise above all else, and that literally includes ALL of Falcom's games, not just Ys series. But from this game, and probably best of all Ys tracks, I must say Red Line -021- it's just absolutely off the charts! The only way I could describe that track is *relentless!* Because that's what it is. Pure awesomeness that never gives you a moment of break. Absolutely loving it. This also gave me a whole new perspective to many of these songs and watching your reactions to them was amazing. It's my first time watching any of your content too, but certainly not the last one! These games and the music especially has been created with so love, passion and care. And it really shows. And it's literally just as amazing in all Ys games. Oh! And if I could recommend another OST for you to react to, try Dark Cloud for PS2! 😊
The "You'll see out the end of tales" actually has something evil in the end, maybe the viewer didnt remember, but this song is literally the area for the final boss, (SPOILERS) where we are trying to someway unlock them/ freeing whatever the name of the hopes of past eras are, and you can see from afar that giant beast of a final boss. When i saw the giant boss there, i got so excited to fight it, and its funny how this exact part played right at the time.
It’s nice how the ”hidden” plot of Maia’s dream is not said out loud in the game’s script itself, but there’s a music piece called ”One Dream, One Reality” that is kind of on the nose. Spoilers follow. … There is just one reality, from where Adol comes from, and one dream (Maia’s), where Dana comes from. The isle of Seiren is where the dream overlaps into reality, being Maia’s physical domain. When Adol and Dana slap down the creature holding the dream up, Adol wakes up and Dana no longer exists since the dream is gone. The reality is fine, though. There’s also no real time travel despite the appearance of it, because the dream’s entire timeline exists simultaneously with reality and Maia just retroactively changes the entire dream timeline every time Adol or Dana interact with it.
Adol isn't the one who dreams, it's Maia. The twist reveal at the end of the game is that the whole world of Ys is actually a dream, and us breaking the Tree of Origins woke Maia up so she basically erased everything. Then Dana wills herself to keep existing so hard that Maia actually notices her and decides to remake the whole world again the way it was before.
@ The reveal is that Ys exists without Maia. Her dream is a layer over it. The dream is just very real when you’re trapped in it. Adol had to travel all the way to Seiren to get caught in the dream. It doesn’t even cover the entire world. Maybe it used to.
I love how with A Footprint in the Wet Sand, you play the chord progression i-VI-VII-v, then i-VI- ??-??. Very entertaining to see you react to this track, my personal fav from Ys VIII.
As much as I'd personally love that with his "one game" rule in place I don't think he will. HOWEVER, we can probably convince him to do FC and SC together since they're basically one big game... hooray for loopholes xD
@@Cyrus_Bright when Trails in the Sky comes up in voting, if enough people ask Dan to do the trilogy and explain that that’s the best way to experience it musically, he’ll probably make an exception and do all 3.
Amazing video! Some of my favorite parts: 1. Seeing the look on your face when THAT PART of Next Step Toward the Unknown kicked in 2. Being so confounded by the chord progression of Great Plains: Pan-Gaia that you forgot to do the actual analysis Ys VIII is my favorite game of all time and it's always so exciting to see people react to it and its incredible OST. I'm glad you liked it! And your analysis helped me have an even deeper appreciation for these songs I already love. Side note: I always saw Great Plains: Pan-Gaia to be a sort of counterpart to Sunshine Coastline. Sunshine plays in the first big open area you reach on the south side of the island, while Pan-Gaia plays on the first big open area you reach on the north side. The "hooks" of the songs sound similar, and both songs give the overall feeling of "look at all this adventure before you", though Sunshine emphasizes the more hopeful and whimsical side of that adventure, while Pan-Gaia emphasizes the danger of adventure.
I was wondering when someone would recommend falcom to you, hopefully we end up getting some more, old school falcom is goated AF and my favorite song is gens d'arms both in game and the super ultimate version
This earned a follow from me! If you want a suggestion of a vg ost that's obscure/unusual/really good, I suggest looking up Terranigma. It was released near the end of the SNES era, and the two composers put the sound chip through the wringer to get what they wanted. It shows. Some of the best tracks are the overworld themes, like Underworld.
When you get to Trails in the Sky, I hope you do the entire trilogy. The 3rd has the best soundtrack I've heard, and each Sky game is literally just different parts of the same game. You literally reacted to the entirety of Umineko, which has more tracks than all three Trails in the Sky games combined.
You REALLY need to listen to the Guilty Gear OST. Daisuke Ishiwatari is such a creative, talented person. Dude made the series, the characters, their designs, draws the box art, writes the story, makes the music, and to top it all off, man is CRACKED at guitar! Preferably Strive, but the Xrd stuff is really good, too.
Wow I didn't know the game but its soundtrack really hits hard. I recommend that you react to the Slime Rancher (1) soundtrack, I think it is one of the soundtracks that best fit the gameplay, It is relaxing but at the same time it has a charming touch. One of my favorites definitely.
Just thought I’d put it out there seeing as this is the most recent video: You should really give the soundtrack of the SNES game “Plok!” a listen. The soundtrack was done by Tim Follins, who is also behind other great game soundtracks like “Silver Surfer” and “Solstice (NES)”. In fact, the harmonica sample used in the game’s title theme had such high fidelity that Shigeru Miyamoto himself had to pry open the cartridge because he couldn’t believe the SNES could produce sound that good.
Lacrimosa of Dana (the Music Track, not the Game itself) is played on the Main Menu of the game. It is a beautiful theme. Then, once you play the game and get to the point in the game it plays, it becomes absolutely gut-wrenching. Definitely one of my favorite leitmotifs in video game music of all time.
It makes sense that a track with the word 'lacrimosa' in it would be played during a sad moment though, since the word 'lacrimosa' is Latin for weeping or tearful. Of course this game also uses it in a hopeful sense later on too (as well as in an ominous sense).
6:18:42 Oh man, it's hard to pick my favorite from the Ys 8 OST, there's so many tracks I enjoy There's In Side My Head, which is the version of Next Step Toward the Unknown with lyrics And Next Step Toward the Unknown is also one of my favorites There's Vanishing Trail Oceanos is fun You'll See Out the End of the Tales is a lot of fun (Falcom always goes ham for their final dungeon themes, and that one is no exception) A-to-Z is a lot of fun Night Survivor is so drastically different from the rest of the OST that I can't help but enjoy it Hope Alive is played during my absolute favorite boss fight in the game so that gets some brownie points from me Tangled Jungle Trick and Woods of Elevated Coral Reef and Leaning Tower Baja are fun dungeon themes For my favorite though, it's gotta be a tie between Next Step Toward the Unknown and You'll See Out the End of the Tales Yeah the Ys 8 OST is my favorite OST out of the Ys series haha As far as the pronunciations: Ys - the word "geese" without the "g" (most people use this pronunciation because the original Japanese pronunciation is "eesu") Dana - dah-na (sorta similar to donna, but not quite the same) Iclucian - yeah, it's "ick-loo-see-an" (for context, Dana's name is Dana Iclucia) Celen is actually supposed to be Seren, which is pronounced as "seh-ren" Seiren is "say-ren" Oceanos is supposed to be Oceanus, which in-game is pronounced as "oh-key-an-us" Etania is supposed to be Eternia, which is pronounced the way it looks - "ee-ter-nee-uh" Aigius is supposed to be Aegias, which is pronounced in-game as "uh-gee-us" (with the g being a softer sound)
While I'd say Monstrum Nox is clearly the weakest game in the series, it certainly has its moments. Some amazing tracks and characters. But anything that goes on for too long is eventually going to crumble in quality.
@@Thunderhawk51 That's your opinion on the weakest game in the series? There's no way Monstrum Nox is weaker than the PS2 version of Ys V Lost Kefin, which has some of the worst and most tedious dungeon design I've ever seen. Ys V on SNES wasn't so hot either, though for different reasons than the PS2 edition (SNES version has the worst implementation of magic I have ever seen in an RPG). Other than Ys V, I think Ys III Wanderers from Ys is pretty dang weak, too - especially the SNES edition that doesn't have functioning hitboxes. Ys IV Mask of the Sun (SNES) and Ys IV Mask of the Sun - A New Theory (PS2) are also very weak games. SNES one is much worse than PS2 in my opinion, but they're both pretty low on the list.
@@MusicTheoryforGamers You must be the person that goes to movie theaters and talks loudly throughout it, cause you can't just sit there and enjoy something.
@@MusicTheoryforGamersfor 5 seconds though, at 4:11:54, it was brilliant! Personally id like to see you use it more like that if you're gonna be doing on the fly accompaniments to the tunes.
I'm so happy to see you listen to and talk about this soundtrack. Ys 8 is a really beautiful game with lots of heart. I really hope you listen to more Falcom soundtracks, I feel they're so underrated. Maybe the Trails from Zero one, a personal fav of mine. I'd vote it up if I could. Have a great day Dan!

I hope this means we can see some reaction to the other games soon, they all have banger OST's
Would kill for a reaction to Ys Origins OST
Thanks for listening to this. YS 8 is incredible and so are the other OST's bv Falcom be it Legend of Heroes or Ys
One of the best soundtracks ever! One that other games have tried to replicate.
As some one who wants to be a game composer this is fun to watch
The "You'll see out the end of tales" actually has something evil in the end, maybe the viewer didnt remember, but this song is literally the area for the final boss, (SPOILERS)
where we are trying to someway unlock them/ freeing whatever the name of the hopes of past eras are, and you can see from afar that giant beast of a final boss.
…
There is just one reality, from where Adol comes from, and one dream (Maia’s), where Dana comes from.
Amazing game with an amazing soundtrack.
So darn great.
I love how with A Footprint in the Wet Sand, you play the chord progression i-VI-VII-v, then i-VI- ??-??. Very entertaining to see you react to this track, my personal fav from Ys VIII.
Finally some NIhon Falcom love, when you get to Trails in the Sky I hope you do the whole trilogy, some of best falcom music is in third game
As much as I'd personally love that with his "one game" rule in place I don't think he will. HOWEVER, we can probably convince him to do FC and SC together since they're basically one big game... hooray for loopholes xD
@@Cyrus_Brightfeels bad man, Sky the 3rd has the best soundtrack I've ever heard.
@@Demi-Joker I hear ya, Sky 3rd is my favorite as well out of the three. He'll get to it one day... hopefully xD
Masquerade of Lies is just... 👌
@@Cyrus_Bright when Trails in the Sky comes up in voting, if enough people ask Dan to do the trilogy and explain that that’s the best way to experience it musically, he’ll probably make an exception and do all 3.
@@J2ojuiced95 interesting, I guess we'll have to see what happens then
I was hoping you'd do this OST, but never expected you to!
Amazing video! Some of my favorite parts:
1. Seeing the look on your face when THAT PART of Next Step Toward the Unknown kicked in
2. Being so confounded by the chord progression of Great Plains: Pan-Gaia that you forgot to do the actual analysis
Ys VIII is my favorite game of all time and it's always so exciting to see people react to it and its incredible OST.
Hi, i never played these games (trail in the sky) , is it an action game like YS or turn based rpg?
@@AnubisDark Trails is turn-based
Maybe the music from Memories of Celceta could make for a good video (sorry to pile on another recommendation).
I love this game music so much
YYYYYYYEEEEEAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
great video🔥🔥
Thanks 🔥
What the hell, whole OST?! Christmas gift
Cool what you explained. I don't plan to watch 6 hours but this 20, 30 minutes were cool!
also Ys is pronounced geese without the G
Just thought I’d put it out there seeing as this is the most recent video: You should really give the soundtrack of the SNES game “Plok!” a listen. The soundtrack was done by Tim Follins, who is also behind other great game soundtracks like “Silver Surfer” and “Solstice (NES)”. In fact, the harmonica sample used in the game’s title theme had such high fidelity that Shigeru Miyamoto himself had to pry open the cartridge because he couldn’t believe the SNES could produce sound that good.
The sunshine coastline song is one of the best first level songs I’ve ever heard
The feeling of listening these songs after playing the game just different
Lacrimosa of Dana (the Music Track, not the Game itself) is played on the Main Menu of the game. It is a beautiful theme. Then, once you play the game and get to the point in the game it plays, it becomes absolutely gut-wrenching. Definitely one of my favorite leitmotifs in video game music of all time.
It makes sense that a track with the word 'lacrimosa' in it would be played during a sad moment though, since the word 'lacrimosa' is Latin for weeping or tearful. Of course this game also uses it in a hopeful sense later on too (as well as in an ominous sense).
You hould do Ys 6, best OST in the series
6:18:42
Oh man, it's hard to pick my favorite from the Ys 8 OST, there's so many tracks I enjoy
There's In Side My Head, which is the version of Next Step Toward the Unknown with lyrics
And Next Step Toward the Unknown is also one of my favorites
There's Vanishing Trail
Oceanos is fun
You'll See Out the End of the Tales is a lot of fun (Falcom always goes ham for their final dungeon themes, and that one is no exception)
A-to-Z is a lot of fun
Night Survivor is so drastically different from the rest of the OST that I can't help but enjoy it
Hope Alive is played during my absolute favorite boss fight in the game so that gets some brownie points from me
Tangled Jungle Trick and Woods of Elevated Coral Reef and Leaning Tower Baja are fun dungeon themes
For my favorite though, it's gotta be a tie between Next Step Toward the Unknown and You'll See Out the End of the Tales
Yeah the Ys 8 OST is my favorite OST out of the Ys series haha
As far as the pronunciations:
Ys - the word "geese" without the "g" (most people use this pronunciation because the original Japanese pronunciation is "eesu")
Dana - dah-na (sorta similar to donna, but not quite the same)
Iclucian - yeah, it's "ick-loo-see-an" (for context, Dana's name is Dana Iclucia)
Celen is actually supposed to be Seren, which is pronounced as "seh-ren"
Seiren is "say-ren"
Oceanos is supposed to be Oceanus, which in-game is pronounced as "oh-key-an-us"
Etania is supposed to be Eternia, which is pronounced the way it looks - "ee-ter-nee-uh"
Aigius is supposed to be Aegias, which is pronounced in-game as "uh-gee-us" (with the g being a softer sound)
The sound of the stream/video has issues or it's me? While I play this game, OST sound fully perfectly fine!
You should do slay the spire!
They have great music!
YS 8 is by far my favorite in the series and I think it has the best overall soundtrack. Monstrom Nox really disappointed me.
Sybilline road is sooooooo goood
Everything sounds like Zelda to you Dan XD
PREACH
I'm in minute 22:20 and sounds is good, maybe was at the beginning??
You should do breath of the wild and tears of the kingdom.
He already did breath of the wild. But he should do tears of the kingdom. Sadly though its based on people who donate asking for the game.
@@ItsSean1 sadly? Trails in the Sky is high up there. Trails in the Sky the 3rd has the best soundtrack in gaming
예전처럼 ys8에 대한 음악을 리액션 해주는 영상을 올려주셨으면 하는 마음이 큽니다 크흑 ㅠㅠ
The guitar during the reactions is super annoying just pay attention to the music.
Tell me more : )
@@MusicTheoryforGamers You must be the person that goes to movie theaters and talks loudly throughout it, cause you can't just sit there and enjoy something.
Okay thanks for your feedback.
