Sandblasting the gates is the only way to go for a lasting finish and look.

    • @karencross1964

I agree. There is such a build up of rust I don't think regular sanding is going to be enough.

And then powder coating an enamel finish to complete it.

Yeah, and if you do a lot of sanding and dont get it coated right away you'll just help the rust advance quickly.

When you first showed the broken finials, I thought just removing them would work, but I was totally wrong. The gates look unfinished without that final piece. These are going to be spectacular when you've finished them. It was nice to see the reinforcements hard at work!

Try boiling the finials in a pot of water for 15 or 20 minutes. Use an old pot you don't intend to use for food again. It breaks the bond between the paint and the metal so you can scrub it off.

The one stump by the gate that had volunteer shoots growing, I believe was a sycamore. I would have left one strong straight shoot to grow into a new tree. I would have trimmed off the dead parts of the stump with a chainsaw. Next I would decorated with some cement blocks around the beginning of the new tree and added some new soil. The gate is beautiful with its ornate trim. The workmanship of that period is outstanding. Adrian, anything that you touch and restore turns to gold. Oh, how I wish you and your family could continue living at the chateau. With time, the entire estate could be as it was when it was built!!! God has gifted you with the ability to restore anything back to its former glory. Katherine from Yakima,Washington,U.S.A.
