If you’ve ever seen Elmer Fudd from Looney Toons… a FUDD is someone who embodies having a stick up their ass bout shooting. Maybe they’re 1911 Die hards. Maybe they talk shit bout dots. “I’ve never needed a dot and I used iron sights back in NAM and won the war!”

      @guy2234-v5r 9 месяцев назад +22

It started out as a reference to Elmer Fudd, and was applied to gun owners, usually older, who would say things like the 2nd Amendment is for hunting, you don't need more than XYZ rounds in your gun, 22s are the most deadly caliber, etc. Just generally wrong stuff that inexperienced shooters thought before firearms education and information became more prevalent.
These days it generally refers to that old school misguided mentality, but applied to a wider range of topics.

Oh, I can one up that. Had a DNR officer state that the reason that a friend couldn't shoot a pumpkin on a public outdoor range, which was damn near used as a disposal site for everything short of vehicles, was due to the pumpkin being able to deflect the round back at the shooter. And the fucker was serious.

Your range may be a fudd range but if you catch a pistol round on the edge of a plastic barrel, it can spin inside of it. I can’t recall one ever exiting the barrel again but it is a real thing and an unsettling thing to hear.

@@counselingpsychology I've heard that sound like twenty times now and have never once heard of it leading to an injury. There would have to be a big ass hole in the barrel for it to exit, because the path of least resistance is to keep going around in circles until friction slows it down. Exiting through another bullet hole (or creating a new one) isn't a thing that's going to happen.

Totally agree Ben on this, I normally go train alone for things I want to go work on, like shooting on the move, entries and exits, etc. You can't do this in an indoor range nor can you do this with a group of people. The things I might want to train on, might not be the things other people might want to train on, so this is why I prefer training alone.
There is a range here in the Dallas/Fort Worth area called ETTS, and I love going here because I can get a bay all to myself and just train on things I want to train on, without the dumb crazy indoor rules.

The "If you don't like it go ahead and start your own range" argument is moronic. Anyone who believes that needs to extend that argument out to everything else to see just how silly it is. Don't like the movie you just saw? Well go film your own movie. Don't like the meal in a restaurant? You should cook it yourself or open your own restaurant. Don't like a feature in your car? Well, go and start manufacturing your own cars. See how rediculous it gets? Yes the ranges can make their own rules. People are free to criticize those rules while they go elsewhere. If the fudds don't like people to express their opinions well that's just too bad. I guess they can retreat to their 'safe space' ranges. But they don't get to control whether people criticise them. Controlling personalities like that are part of the reason that USPSA is in the fix it is currently in.

Same! Same Ben! I've checked out more than a few Fudd ranges and didn't waste a second arguing with them or getting mad. Even when they had extremely condescending Fudd attitudes, as almost all Fudds tend to. I simply left and took my business elsewhere. I was able to find a much better range with far less restrictions. Oh, and guess what else. They still have rules!!!! IKR! Crazy that they still have basic safety rules and a few restrictions. However, I'm allowed to shoot my own steel. I'm allowed to conduct live fire movements and there are no caliber restrictions. The best parts are that it was a 350m range, it's rarely occupied and only cost me $60 a year. I'm a free market kind of guy and you can ask any price for a firearm or accessory you like, and you can conduct your gun shop/range any way you like. The free market will always self-correct for overpricing and crap attitudes. I don't argue about any of it. I simply let me dollars do my talking.

  • @counselingpsychology

I don’t think the problem with a fudd range is just the unflinching rigid rules, but also how they enforce them. Watching a fudd literally screaming at a guy and his 8 year old daughter for walking up to the RO and asking where to shoot instead of checking in at the office first is both ridiculous and not uncommon. I understand working at a gun range can be emotionally taxing with trying to manage idiots and safety. But the people responsible for customer service at a fudd range can be some of the most verbally unhinged people who respond to every infraction like you just pointed a muzzle at their face.

Ugh yeah I just experienced this at the new range I signed up to. I was talked to about rapid firing. I was doing bill drills. Was told I would have to inform them that I was gonna do that and it’s at the RSOs discretion. Their reasoning was just because I can do it there might be others who might feel uncomfortable or maybe hear it and start doing it too and might not be able to handle doing it.

If you need to zero your gun, test a load, try a new spring etc, there are plenty of places to do that. However if want to move, shoot fast, have multiple targets or even chrono in Az...good luck. Ben Avery which has a huge public range does have Practical Pistol bays for rent where you can do all those other things. Typically you have to be a member of Cactus Combat League or a dedicated firearms training business to be able to use those ranges however getting a reservation is very challenging. That really is the only place in Phoenix other than going to the desert where you can have the freedom to train for competition.

I suppose I agree. Whatever rule the range wants, the range gets. It's not worth the effort to argue about it. I go to an indoor range that's somewhat tolerant of rapid shooting. Once I get warmed up, I tend to exceed the speed limit. The worst that's happened is the RO stands behind me to make sure I'm shooting well. If I am, no harm done. They say the reason for the speed limit is to avoid running people off. I can understand that. I've been there on a couple occasions when I decided to split because the AR's, and whatnot, were intolerable. I set up, fired a few rounds, then walked out. It can get stupid.

My counter-comment to this would be that some of these "fudd" ranges are non-profits that have a board. Getting people to join, vote for new board members, then take over and change the rules is definitely a thing you can do. Everyone raves about the Iowa Sectional match, and many don't know that range used to be a fudd range. But because it's a non-profit (Izaak Walton League) some competition shooters were able to get on the board and effect change.

We have 11 pistol bays with the range depth going from 30 yards to 100 yards, depending on wgich bay you use. You can shoot rifle to pistol in these bays. If your shooting full auto there is a bay for that too.
We have the a 300 yd range and 1000 yd range.
You can shoot as fast or slow as you want at the range. Mag dumps encouraged.
We also have a full on shotgun Clays range with throw houses and competition shooting. We host many USPCA shoots as well for pistol and 3 gun.
We have a club house and heated shacks/cabins for shooting in the winter at rifle and pistol bays.
We don't have authoritarian RO's policing us. We have no problems or accidents.
Range is open to public on Sundays
All this for $175 a year.

Unfortunately range rules are based on the lowest common denominator. I have had ROs come up to me at a public range asking me to slow down my shooting when I am grouping into a 2" circle. The comment that I get is - "I can see that you are fine but if you do it, the guys in the other lanes will do the same and they will shoot up the floor and the ceiling." Is it a stupid rule? I can see the signs of floor and ceiling (and wall) hits. So it is not something that they have made up. So just because it constrains me needlessly, does not mean that it is not a needed rule. I am fortunate enough to have several venues where I can train. When time and/or weather constrains me to the places that limit my training options, I try to make the best with what I got. I will move the target further and/or make it smaller forcing me to shoot at a pace that is acceptable to the people running the range.

  • @ZizinRacing

I have a membership at a semi-fudd private range. Lots of stupid rules in the areas like the 100 yard rifle zeroing range as it's full of completely untrained people all the time. Fortunately you can mostly do anything you want in the action bays and there are enough of them that you can always get one all to yourself even if a club match is being run but the one dumb rule is no muzzles above the berm, even during reloads. You may have even noticed people who train at my range at big matches as we all have a distinctive reload haha. I do have nice wooded BLM land I can drive into to do whatever I want about equidistant from my house as well but regular training is much more convenient to do at the range as they have lots of facilities and all the stands and props I could ever want all ready to go so I usually choose the range despite the funny rule.

We aren't going to the range to take a pistol for a spin and "exercise our 2A rights."
We want and need to train specific things for a specific reason. That training involves firing quickly at multiple targets while moving, things you just can't do at most ranges. As noted, they have good reasons for the rules that they enforce, insurance and liability being high among them.
I also have good reasons for not visiting those ranges, primarily that slow fire for accuracy is mainly about grip and stance and I can do that with dry fire at home.
Ranges don't offer the training we need, so we come up with other options. What is so hard to understand?

"Required by the insurance" is not even close to true. I worked on my club's renewal in 2023, the carriers who cover gun clubs and shooting ranges don't have crazy detailed requirements. In fact their coverage requirements aren't granular enough, they are too generic. I'm not trying to pitch my services but if you know a range/club that believes they have strident rules originating in the carrier's underwriting -- well I could sure help them do better, either at understanding their coverage or understanding how to find better coverage.
