  • Star Wars Episode 9: The Rise of Skywalker is... really bad. At least to me, anyway. Today on Quinton Reviews, we discuss my personal experiences watching the film, and my thoughts about it. Let's jump right into the adventures of Kylo Ren, Rey, Finn, Poe, and definitely no one else.

    [Spoilers]
Someone pointed out that my interpretation of the scene in TLJ isnt quite right, and that it wasnt meant to say that Ben Solo was gone and beyond reach, but that Kylo just couldnt be redeemed exactly the way Anakin was. I think some part of me did want Ben back, for him to get back to the good side, but I felt that his redemption needed to have more weight since we saw him committing such heinous crimes constantly with every chance to stop. I would compare it to how IDW handled Megatron's redemption in their comics, an admittance of guilt alongside the will to be better.
I would have liked something like that was a lot more than just "ahhh I'm vaguely good again, gonna die so I cant go to jaaaaiiiilllll"

I do get that, but at the very least he did give his life to bring back the person who actually saved the day. Would have been kind of sucky to just dander off with his life after all that.

No, I agree. It's literally the easiest solution, because any genuine attempts at a proper redemption would be too complicated to resolve in 10 minutes. Also it allows them to pair Rey with Ben for a few seconds while still allowing the potential to ship with Finn. Really contrived.

    • @mai_komagata
      @mai_komagata 4 года назад +29

As someone who feels very differently about the inevitability of ben solo's redemption I still agree it is very badly handled. Adam driver definitely sells it acting wise, but what they really should have done is taken all the materials from comics and books that show how fucked up and manipulated by Snoke (or haha secretly palpatine) and show that this character is a stand-in for an abused child not for a war criminal -- maybe by showing a marked contrast between him and the FO generals. And I'm ok with him having a life in exile or something as punishment too. I don't think this precludes him ending up with Rey (also FYI story group has confirmed Palpatine is NOT related to Anakin in any way), it's just not an easy or immediate journey. If that had been the focus of the story instead of all the other hilarious quests and reveals it would have made a politically and socially interesting movie on the nature of redemption/rehabilitation, that redemption != death, and that people can change after being abused. But yeah, other than some cool ben solo character acting moments, there is nothing redeeming about this movie.

    • @LilyoftheLake14
      @LilyoftheLake14 3 года назад +5

@@wyattpeek429 There's really good evidence that jar jar was originally intended to be a secret Sith lord and the titular "phantom menace." If you look up the theory, the video evidence is, 1, how high jar jar can jump from a still position. Just as high as jedi and sith can.
2, How jar jar can "stumble" into a dangerous situation and still stay safe, no matter how clumsy he is, even during the war. He survives so easily because he utilizes the force. Like, he ducks out of the line of fire without even seeing that he's about to be shot. Also notice how he's impossibly clumsy during the entire 1st movie but then he never acts clumsy again (during the 2nd & 3rd movies.)
3, There's a famous clip of Lucas behind the scenes saying "Jar jar's the *key* to all this, if we get Jar jar working. 'Cause he's a funnier character than we've ever had in the movies." This theory posits that Lucas was setting up a big reveal at the end of the 2nd film, just like empire, even though the Vader being Luke's father twist wasn't set up until empire was in production.
4, The smoking gun imo to this theory is during a scene in the 1st prequel when padame is talking to quigon, and she's protesting against the group doing something on tatooine. As she says something like "well I don't agree" you can see jar jar's lips mouthing the exact same words. He's pulling a mind trick on her! This isn't just an actor accidentally mouthing a line along with another actor either. Since Jar jar is completely cgi, the artists that worked on that scene had to purposely make his mouth move along with those words. I think he was originally intended to have been instructed by palpatine to make sure the jedi don't find anakin so that the sith can take him for themselves.
More evidence exists like the obvious sabotage by Jar jar when he "accidentally drops" a wrench into an engine of Anakin's podracer. Also, jar jar is very close by when Sebulba breaks off a piece of anakin's podracer. Jar jar is flailing about and could easily be pulling off a covert mind trick to make Sebulba sabotage the podracer.
I think jar jar was originally planned to be a "lovable" goofball, so that during the 2nd movie, a big reveal would happen towards the end that jar jar was a sith lord who was pulling the strings and using a goofball exterior to throw people off the scent. He would basically replace the role of count dooku. Also, notice how Jar jar gives near complete power to palpatine in space Congress. That probably would be the same, too.
Tl;dr: Anyway, if you look this theory up, there's a substantial amount of evidence to support the Darth Jar Jar theory.

To be fair, RoS isn't really the film JJ wanted to make. If the rumors/leaks about this film's production are to be believed, then what happened was Disney kept asking JJ "Will this please everyone?", JJ kept saying no, and then Disney kept forcing him to change the film until it "pleased" as many people as possible. The best example of this is the main villain, since originally it was going to be the Son of Mortis until Disney forced JJ to change it to Palpatine .

This is honestly the biggest reason I was upset about the “gay kiss” in Rise of Skywalker. The production team clearly knew what the fans wanted for a gay moment: they intentionally introduce two female romantic interests for both Poe and Finn because the actors have a natural chemistry that led fans want to see their characters together. So they tease a big gay moment, knowing we want thst, and write around it with a second long kiss between unnamed characters that can be edited out of foreign releases

32:08 Yes! Finally someone else realizes this! I gave up on this trilogy after seeing Ep. VII because I saw this coming. JJ Abrams' setups are always disappointing because his reveals are predictable, uncreative, and meaningless to the story. Several times in Mission: Impossible 3, the camera ominously hangs on Lawrence Fishburn to suggest he is the mole in IMF, which instantly tells you that he's not. In Super 8, he hides what the alien looks like, but its appearance is meaningless to the story. And how stupid is Benedict Cumberbatch revealing himself as "Khan" in Star Trek: Into Darkness? Most of these reveals don't detract from the movie too much because they don't really matter. But nearly every mystery box and plot contrivance shown in Ep. VII had greater potential ramifications on the characters and storylines of the entire Star Wars franchise. I disliked Ep. VII on its on merit, and I also saw that it left no room for the sequels to do anything but focus on opening mystery boxes.
Abrams' "mystery box" formula leaves no room for surprises. Because we have known that Vader is Luke's father for nearly forty years, people forget that the identity of Luke's father was never presented as important or in question before the reveal in Ep. V. That's what made it a surprise! The idea that Vader murdered his father was just one of many motivations for Luke to fight Vader. If Ep. IV or V had Luke's origins be his motivation like Ep. VII (and I've heard VIII) does for Rey, learning the truth would not have been as surprising or satisfying.

This. Every single other possibility for the reveal of who Rey's parents were, except the one Johnson used, was predictable and boring AF.
And the Luke stuff in TLJ was kind of character assassination, but it was JJ's fault to make his disappearance this big deal that really can't be resolved in a meaningful way without either derailing Luke's character or introducing a shitton of boring ass deux ex machina.

Every plot point that TLJ left open was absolutely exploded in this one.

The point isnt that the blood is “royal” (which i dont think quinton said) but that the ability to use the force is entirely predetermined by who your parents are. The coolness factor of the force was that supposedly anybody can use it and that very little is known about it, but now its really just about being special by association of someone who can use the force.

I think Lucas’ intent with midichlorians was that they were still everywhere and represented the microbiology of the universe as a means of permeating the force. The bloodline wasn’t so much about having midichlorians as much as an ability to control and interact with them. It would have worked better if he hadn’t written it anikan as being specifically ‘full of midichlorians’ but I think the idea of it being an everpresent quality to the universe that can be manipulated was still retained in the prequels, rather than becoming something only accessible to a specific bloodline. Yoda wasn’t related to Luke afterall and it seemed to be more of a gift of control that had to be learned and mastered rather than an inherent ability, which is where the disney movies really screwed things up further.

The thing that makes me angry about Kylo’s redemption isn’t that it happened - his story couldn’t end properly otherwise - but that this movie in particular didn’t earn it. The first two films we see him struggling with the dark side, and in this one, up until the moment his mom dies he has no real qualms about anything. It not only feels like he’s a different character than the man we saw before, it cheapens the moment when he finally does become Ben again.
Also his death scene looks patently ridiculous. Did they have to make him fall back like a puppet with his strings cut? My sister laughed at that part too.
I agree with everything else in this review, btw. The sidelining of Rose’s character, the inclusion of new ones (who seemed only to exist to remind people that the two male leads are straight), the gay kiss that felt like more of an insult than anything else... And omg, Rey being a Palpatine. Just why? Why can’t she just be a talented Force user?? Ugh. There was so much wrong with this movie. I wanted to love it. I actually quite enjoyed the first two sequels. But this just left a bad taste in my mouth.

Chewie's dead but he's not, Rey dies but no she doesn't, Ben dies but then he doesn't until he finally does, 3PO has his memory wiped but there was no consequence since he gets it back...
Kylo Ren's character took the hardest hit, because he's consistently been the best of the new cast. Last Jedi set him up for a really interesting narrative. But wow he doesn't have any development here. The film has absolutely no moral dilemmas. The way he tries to tempt Rey again to the Dark side is little beyond "your grandfather and my grandfather ... First he's actually wrong entirely, Palpatine isn't his father, but he's was most definitely his father figure since he was a little kid. His real one is dead and the first adult man in his life was his slave owner and was abusive, his first real actually good father figure was killed not too long after he rescued him from slaver, Qui-gon Gin, and later pretty much gave his life to keep him and everyone safe, and the next olde man in his life was actually not that much older than him, Obi-wan was pretty much still a student and a kid when he started training him and was his teacher but like I said he's still had too much to learn before he should have started training him. Many of the Jedi masters just treated him like another student and even belittled him for a large part of Anis life and he had to just take it, like they would call him useless trash and he had to go like "Yes master, your are right master, I have to improve myself, thank you master I will work hard to do better" and just how's. And Palpatine treated Ani life another person in a way, instead of treating him like the messiah like Qui-gon, or as a young little brother while still being young aswell and at the same time being a disciplining teacher during a war like Obi-wan. Palpatine actually treated him like he was an uncle to Ani and he showed he care allot for him (well he showed and acted) and Ani showed he cared for him and trusted him aswell, even telling him things he won't even tell his not brother.
He's not his father, Plagus was the is, and even if he was they still wouldn't be related by blood since he used the force so he would be like step parent.

Okay, I have something to say with that gay kiss. I saw a headline about that a few hours before I went to see the movie, and I thought they were talking about Finn and Poe. I shipped StormPilot since the beginning, so I was really excited, and my friend who I was seeing it with agreed that we were about to get our wish. The entire movie, we were jokingly and excitedly pointing out all the romantic tension between them. At the very end, there was that moment where Finn and Poe started running towards each other as the camera panned in, and we were so excited. And they hugged. Not kissed. Hugged. They pulled back, and for a second I still had hope. And then it cut to the actual kiss. Quinton said it very well, in that we shouldn’t praise Hollywood until they make actual big strides in representation. If LGBTQ romances in these major mainstream franchises are going to be constantly relegated to split second displays of affection by unknown background characters, or will-they, won’t-they gay-baiting, I think I’m done with those franchises.

The movie was disappointing except for the new robot, Dio. He’s a cutie. Thats it.

I'm sure however, that "Poe and Finn were never supposed to be a couple, they're just friends" is what came from the disney overlords and had to be pushed in this movie, and maybe it was the original intention of the characters, but if you think about it, Poe was also supposed to die in TFA, and they rewrote it, it's never impossible to add something onto a character

That's exactly what I was like when I left the theater bathroom after Force Awakens. I sat through that whole long-ass movie, my bladder fit to burst from all the water I drank, and after the most soul cleansing pee I have ever had I realized that I watched something that was basically nothing. It wasn't even a good homage to A New Hope, it was a slave to it. It was like a checklist of Star Wars elements assembled into a movie. You have this whole wider galaxy to play in and your whole goal was to create Episode IV but bigger? Don't get me wrong, there are things I like. I like Finn, and until she was an absolute Mary Sue, I liked Rey. But I've spilled enough ink on that franchise, and no I did not watch the second or third movie in the new trilogy. After The Force Awakens I just... let go.

I wonder why many fans (yes, I'm gatekeeping) don't understand this. Quinton's claim of "superior bloodlines" is bullshit. Anakin was the only one who was literally conceived by the Force and all the other Jedi didn't come from "special" families (several in the Expanded Universe did, but that was before it was established that Jedi couldn't have families). People who are very strong in the Force can come from non-Force-sensitive parents, just like a Force sensitive can have offspring that isn't strong in the Force.
I liked the scene in Dave Wolverton's book TCOPL where Luke explained to Prince Isolder that while not everyone can become a Jedi, everyone can serve the light side in their own way.

It would have revealed that Anakin wasn't the chosen one and that such dogmatic beliefs in a Messianic figure saving everyone are foolish.
I assume that was the original intent, but they shied away due to it feeling like an attack on Christianity.
Star Wars does this dumb shit where they make something happen in a movie and then create some over the top explanation for it, that isn't in a movie. Like L Jackson had a purple saber because he wanted his kids to be able to find him on the battlefield in Episode 2 when watching it, but the movie was like "WELLLL AKTUALLY he channels both the dark and the light in a unique fighting style that he'll go on to use to beat Palpatine". BUT WE WONT EVEN HINT ABOUT IT DURING HIS FIGHT WITH PALP IN THE MOVIES. It's really frustrating.
And with the constant canonizing and decanonizing I don't even know at all how to interpret certain scenes.
They basically 343 industries it before 343 even existed.

JundArbiter well, there’s a few reasons. Lloyd is not a great child actor and his lines are cringeworthy. Secondly, the most important events happen by accident. Take the end battle, Annie “accidentally” ends up flying the ship out of the hangar, then “accidentally” ends up blowing up the big ship. And then we have Jar Jar, always in frame or in the background doing something “funny”. As someone who’s an old fart and old enough to have seen the original at the theatre, I believe that the best Star Wars are the first 3. ROTS is enjoyable but not great but better than Phantom Menace or Clones.

K Bizzy I was a kid when PM came out, and found Jar Jar funny. I still like him. But comedic characters are extremely subjective so I get that he could be hateable.
I never thought any of the dialogue was good so having another character having bad dialogue didn’t bother me either. I love Star Wars so obviously the dialogue being goofy never put me off.
I always thought the point was that Anakin wasn’t accidentally doing anything. He knew he was kind of going against QG’s wishes so he’s like “oh wait how do I fly this oh oops I booted this thing up let’s go f*** some dudes” with the only accident being the autopilot taking him into space.
It’s a combination of him being unusually skilled at piloting and unusually ignorant of Naboo ships and having knowledge of space flight but not any significant experience.
I gotta say the “accidentally” part is not a criticism I have ever heard that’s very interesting. I will say I think the sequels are much worse in that regard if anything.

I get that it’s hard, but she’s one of THE main characters in all of Star Wars. That being said, it would feel even more disrespectful to just write her out completely off screen. They were put in a tough situation with her real life death. In a perfect world, if she was still alive, I think she should’ve been in this movie a lot more.
