that's exactly what I tried explaining to the police officer, that every time I hit the brakes, it costs me money. Apparently, this excuse ain't working when you're doing almost 3 times the speed limit
One thing I would really like to see in this game (it's a minor detail) but since these trucks run on diesel, it be amazing to have to wait for glow plugs to cycle after leaving the truck off for a night, that would be amazing.
The way I see the breaks and how they are used is that Breaks are for turning/steering when entering a corner even more so when travelling at speed as a tap on the breaks will shift the weight of the vehicle allowing for more control in the corner
Thanks for telling about that "breaks are for stopping" thing. I don't have a driving license yet, but these tips made me learn other ways of slowing down. Thanks, Squirrel!
your explanation of "brakes are for stopping" is exactly how i drive IRL, always have just naturally, no one told me. Its easy to put 2 and 2 together and see that #1, you are causing unnecessary wear on components, and #2, if you slow down, you will have to speed back up. its far more efficient to, as you said, anticipate the road, and coast to reduce speed well ahead of time, etc. save brakes for emergency or actual stopping.
Hi Paul, quite agree with your comments about brake over-use. A classic demo of this was given years ago by Graham Hill who drove from BBC Broadcasting House in the West End to Shepherds Bush Green in heavy London traffic by simply using his gears effectively. He had a ring on the bonnet with an unsecured ball in it which was still there at the end of the journey. He never used the brakes once! The A28 where I live is a very 'bendy' road for the 10 miles into Ashford in Kent where drivers use their brakes on every bend. On many occasions I have driven the entire journey without any brake use. It's as you said, all down to anticipation. Keep up the great work.
I turned fines off and put a large cattle guard on my Kenworth. Now if the stupid AI gets in my way I just gently push them off the road with no damage to my truck.
When you get the loan payed if you should buy the Peterbuilt 379. It's the same idea as the Kenworth boxy and older looking more of a classic and it would be a nice change of scenery.
Paul -- I can relate to backing off the throttle to slow down; it works better than you think. If I know I'll have to stop, I ease up on the accelerator; when I get to the stop, a very light braking is all that is needed.
Back in my early days I got a job as a London Bus Driver, they teach you about advance driving skills, always thinking ahead, if your saw a car waiting to come out of a side road, you eased off the gas, because for sure they see you coming and will want to be in front of you. The most important reason also was, you had Humans on board so hitting the brakes at the last minute was a No No. I taught my wife all the skills and she like you Squirrel only uses her brakes when needed, a friend who was a Police Advance Driving Instructor praised her when he and his wife were in the car on her driving skills. As you also say your Brake Discs and Pads last longer. Loved the journey
you are 100% correct about braking especially in trucks, because you can overheat your brakes if heavy. Most trucks have 3 stage engine brakes low, medium, high, and my trainer said when you are going down a mountain, stay in a lower gear, and use low to medium engine brake to keep speed and if the truck still pushes you faster, use the high engine brake, and if it does push you faster after that it's usually not enough to overheat your brakes should you need them.
Can't wait for the prize draw of the dank Gaming PC. I was taught to drive a manual but I'm 19 and drive an RS6 Audi avant which is paddle or auto gears, fast though, 200 mph top 0-60 mph in 3.2 secs. The manual shift is really smooth but the auto is better, using the shifters gives you quick changes and If you rev it to the limiter, it crackles and pops. Good Vid Squirrel
Don't drive close to other cars in front. There is one accident that is 100% avoidable. That's the rear end. If you keep 3 seconds (1001, 1002, 1003) between you and the car ahead, regardless of speed, you will never crash into the back of a car, and you will have the room to stop the guy on your arse from crashing into you, but not having to do an emergency stop when the car in front hits the skids. The other good tip is learn defensive driving, looking ahead for signs. ie car on side of road with engine running (exhaust steam), or front wheels turning out. Little things like this will keep money in your pocket, and stop you getting hurt, and most importantly smashing up that nice car you love.
On an unrelated note Squirrel, thanks to watching some of your old streams and videos I've discovered the wonderful Bob Ross, certainly made Thursday become less stressful.
I know it might not be super realistic but one really good way to merge onto a highway is to go down the ramp and onto the road with your hazards on, all the cars on the highway behind you will stop. Works every time
If you want the trucks to feel a bit more heavy I find that mods for softer suspension help alot. They don't feel the best at high speed but when you're cornering you will make sure not to go too fast.
Thank you for saying that, I'm 24 and have been driving since 17 I'm in US, I have been driving the way you said you drive for about 3 years now. I get so mad when people tap the brakes haha. Use momentum while driving, you really don't even have to hit the brakes while going down hill if you have a newer automatic because the car will stay around the same speed, but in a manual you just let the gear keep the speed
I'm with you on the driving; my instructor taught me the same kinda of principle of looking ahead and planning your speed and position. I always have an eye on as far as I can see. On bendy roads I've seen people's brakes lights like a flashing christmas tree, and on a dual carriageway/motorway people not planning ahead or no positional awareness and they have braked then pulled out (perhaps from behind a truck) when I'm almost on top of them rather rather taking advantage of the space before I've got there. I think of driving like playing chess, it's always better to try and plan your moves well in advance. Regarding fish, you should try river trout, one of my favourite fish to eat.
Hey squirrel, at 25:30 when you turn left into the delivery point you're supposed to use the center median before turning. Something common all across North America: if the median has a solid line and a dashed line, use it as a left turn lane. fyi
I drive for a living then come home and watch more driving... I think I like vehicles to much 😂😂 and I personally understand what you mean when people don't plan ahead because I drive buses and if I get to close to the next car and they slam on the brake a bus can't stop on a dime and I have had so many close calls with cars its ridiculous! ! but after time I've learned how much distance I need
I loved the bit about brake use - that's how I drive, as well. Not only does it save gas, but my brake pads last practically forever. It's a shame that Driver's Ed. classes in the U.S. don't teach that (At least mine didn't. Maybe others do?)
My father told me exactly the same thing about using brakes. =) I always cringe when I have to use the breaks unless I have to break. Always wanted more advanced break and tire wear in ETS and ATS. Maybe it will come one day.
I've lived near the ocean for 95% of my life and I'm not big on seafood, either. Or fish in general. There's a lot of ways to prepare seafood, but if it's smells it's usually gone bad. Fried, boiled, etc. My dad loves fried clams. You should go to New England like Maine. For crab go to Maryland. Softshell crab sandwich, anyone? ha.
I agree with you on "brakes are for stopping" I can't stand following people that are always braking every 5 seconds. Last time I got my brake pads changed the mechanic asked how many kilometres It had been since they were last changed. When I told him he said that I must use my brakes a lot less than the average driver
Aggressive driving is another HUGE problem in the US. I do fault the "get it down last week" mentality we've been programed to follow at work. it comes out in driving.
You should try out an insurance mod. There is on on the steam workshop called Co - Insurance and you can get it for ATS and ETS 2. It basically reduces the repair bill if you are a good driver for example the price will be less if you don't crash much or if you don't speed etc. Worth a check in case anything ever happens again like your Cardiff Rostock Disaster!
Your dad taught you well Paul, I share the same views on the basics of driving. Anticipate, people! I always keep my distances from the cars in front since more often than not, I swear they drive with one foot on the throttle, and the other on the brakes, and just alternatively press each at random... ^^'
Things in the distance get blurred out to save system resources. If you don't need a lot of detail, why use the resources to generate it? It's called a LOD object, "level of detail." That "blurring" is actually a really low poly 3D object or a low resolution 2D billboard. It's there to improve performance, not reduce "dancing" or aliasing.
@Squirrel I live in Michigan. the only state that requires those on the interstate to yield or move over to vehicles entering the interstate. You mentioned that it would be nice if cars did that. Let me tell you, it is!
I wish they would add some random road work so you have to look for another route or accidents.Just like they have it in Fern Bus Simulator, that would make the trips even more interesting.
thank you! thats what I tried to explain to people with them to improve their driving an that I did 9yrs ago, i learned how to drive in grand theft auto an midnight clubs games from back in the old days an also practiced my parallel parkin. it does really teach you alot on how to drive
there's another way to brake. It's with the engine, by lowering the gear box you are taking the ability of the engine to go thurder and that way you'll speed down to
The Railroad tracks next to the Ocean belongs to the Union Pacific Railroad and other railroads use it as well such as Burlington Northern Railroad, Santa Fe Railroad, BNSF Railway (Burlington Northern Santa Fe) and Canadian National Railway all use that set of tracks but once in a while the Rio Grande Railroad use it but not very often.
The fact that you put a key in the ignition and put it to BATT ON, already costs you money, because that voltage is gonna drop a bit, to recharge it you need the alternator, which charges the battery when the engine is running, which in turn burns gas. Thinking in such a way, you might altogether drop driving, because you realise no matter what you do, even by just owning a vehicle, it costs you money lol Every driver needs something called Pedal Discipline and that is in short: don't push the throttle to 100% in the city because there's a good probability of a red light in the next 200 meters and don't abuse your engine to 8000 rpm because it sounds so cool on 2nd gear but you move like a supermarket cart. Also don't brake on every clear intersection especially if you have the right of way because thats just SUPER annoying to the guy behind you.
paul you should see the belfast - londonderry train line if you think that was close to the coast. this one is right next to the sea and if its a rough sea the splash hits the train
Actually they DO teach you this kind of "advanced driving" in driving school. Over here in The Netherlands it's called: "The new driving" I'm an HGV driver in real life and you are amazed how far you can keep rolling with 40-50 tonnes of gross weight. Sure, you'll arive 2 seconds later at the roundabout or junction, but you'll still have to brake pretty hard when you arrive there. And when there are traffic lights you'll often arrive when they turn green and can roll on right through. Starting at 30km\h makes a huge difference instead of starting from a standstill. In time AND fuel.
You know you could've stayed on the freeway the first time you exited into Oxnard? One of the problems I've noticed more of now in 1.5 is the routing tries to find the absolute shortest route, I've had it try to route me down an exit and right back onto the freeway a couple times now, or annoying little bypasses through cities that are unnecessary and time consuming.
Your driving understanding is the same for me,Think a head watch down the road you'll be a better driver.I have rode behinde cars that hit the brake just because they going to fast when they should let off the gas and coast a little.
The "don't brake if you don't need to" or "anticipate the road" only doable in an empty road without so many cars and without traffic jam. it would never happen in the crowded city (or in my city at least - we drive like crazy here) because if you do apply that principle, you'd be dead in a car crash already.
There is an option to disable the message that pops up wen you press throtle wen parking brake is engaged. Look for it in gameplay part in the options menu. It also disables all other messages like Press E to turn of the engine to sleep. You will get a message to go to Wheight station.
i have a suggestion for a mod btw you don't have to check it out but it is called DP's realistic traffic and it makes traffic more dense and changes the ai a bit to make them a bit less careful about preserving themselves i have been using it and really enjoy it. One problem is that in big cities at least for me i have been having some FPS drops although i have settings set to high so maybe lowering them may help. Makes highways feel less empty and more like actual big city, US highways with traffic all around you and makes cities take a little bit longer to get through. Also if you wanted to start a new "challenge city" Klaas' real economy and real gas prices mods make money a lot more difficult to come by. Don't know how well of a series making 100 bucks a job starting out would be but worth a look. I know this is a long comment but i really enjoy your content keep up the good work.
I was told if you are slowing down you should lightly use the brake so that your brake light come on and that let's the car behind know you are slowing down .
I feel the need to inform you, buddy, that if you have ANY type of food from the water, and it smells fishy, then it most likely is either not very fresh, or it is bad n some way. Fresh fish does NOT smell like fish. Same goes for shellfish... no real smell if fresh and good, but it sure taste YUMMY!
you may want to check out: train mod 2.0 for ATS 1.5 open beta by Piva - it's not applied to all trains in game, but friggin 'eck, there are your long trains !!!
I agree with him about the lengths of the trains most of the time in this game however that could be a short one because it;s in a yard and just switching stuff around.
so salmon starts its life in fresh water, spends most of its life in the ocean, then returns to the same river to reproduce. most of the salmon fished (at last in the USA) if not farmed happens at that last part
five driving habits everyone should do 1. aim high in steering 2. get the big picture 3. keep your eyes moving 4. leave yourself a out 5. make sure they see you
In Australia if your driving a truck Bus or large vehicle and going down hill on freeway you will get a fine if caught using brake to much i think it's touch brakes more then 3 times always make sure your in the right gear for the hill
I really wish I had know that I would loose EVERYTHING with the beta thing. I had ALL of the garages, all filled with trucks/drivers, and a bit over 10 million in my account. However, a blessing in disguise, as I was at a loss as to what I should be DOING from that point on... lol! I mean, I really had no NEED to drive my self, as the girls (had a few guys driving) were bringing in the moo-lah. Other than just ending up driving, what is there to DO once you get to where I was? So, I would just drive around a lot discovering all the map, FINALLY getting 99.03%... never found the last bit. Man, I LOVE this game, and YOU for helping make it so much more with your videos. THANK YOU!
hi paul i can tell the difference when you hit the break pedal by the sound of the engine, also i like all yr vids and i mean all of them keep it up mate cant wait for the us dairies like the euro Q&A
I do that even with my normal car. I drive same road every freaking day and theres traffic camera just on when the speed limit changes (that traffic camera makes some serious money..). I of course know about it and engine break to it but most people who are behind me just drive normally. Usually I will siganal 2-3 in row with brake that they see speed limit in changing.
Actually ..., the fuel usage means nothing unless you turn on Realistic Fuel Consumption, you can run your rig hard, and it will tell you 3mpg, but you'll only use 7.35mpg once you have all the skill points.
When you were passing the Texaco plant, WHAT was going on in the parking lot on the other side of the road??? At one point it looked like 2 guys were holding another with yet another walking towards them.
I can't use the rescale because my mods don't work well with it! I'd recommend Squirrel to try hitting the Nevada deserts, but since he's this far south, I'd say he should hit the Mojave.
that's exactly what I tried explaining to the police officer, that every time I hit the brakes, it costs me money. Apparently, this excuse ain't working when you're doing almost 3 times the speed limit
daGRiPreaper 3 times the limit? How fast were you driving?
daGRiPreaper Hah
230mph ofc
Brakes? What are those? :)
One thing I would really like to see in this game (it's a minor detail) but since these trucks run on diesel, it be amazing to have to wait for glow plugs to cycle after leaving the truck off for a night, that would be amazing.
Yea I do that😂😂
Jazzycat is The Man.
Fuel/brake economy talk, great stuff.
I never hear you using the jake brake.
"save money, dont hit the brakes"
goes thru 35mph area doing 45mph....
riight, gotcha :DD
(@8:50 onwards)
Thanks for truck simulation videos squirrel..😉😉😉
The way I see the breaks and how they are used is that Breaks are for turning/steering when entering a corner even more so when travelling at speed as a tap on the breaks will shift the weight of the vehicle allowing for more control in the corner

Some people drive too fast as well, so using the brakes then makes sense as they might not be able to slow down in time.

I just started driving, thanks for the tips!
you should look at his tutorial vids
Why would you need a tutorial beyond here's the gas pedal and there's the steering wheel? :p
true
Don't drive close to other cars in front. There is one accident that is 100% avoidable. That's the rear end. If you keep 3 seconds (1001, 1002, 1003) between you and the car ahead, regardless of speed, you will never crash into the back of a car, and you will have the room to stop the guy on your arse from crashing into you, but not having to do an emergency stop when the car in front hits the skids. I was always been told never use your brakes on the highway unless you really need to
My dad always said brakes are for stopping and the gear box is for slowing down e.g. 5th gear to 3dr gear also known as engine breaking
On an unrelated note Squirrel, thanks to watching some of your old streams and videos I've discovered the wonderful Bob Ross, certainly made Thursday become less stressful.

i see your point about the braking, just watching you drive, it seems smoother and more efficient
The railway line is right by the sea on the Devon coastline at Dawlish. It got damaged by the sea in storms a few years ago.
Hey squirrel, at 25:30 when you turn left into the delivery point you're supposed to use the center median before turning. Something common all across North America: if the median has a solid line and a dashed line, use it as a left turn lane. fyi

you should download 'DP's realistic traffic' -mod
you can also adjust your rpm when you downshift so that the clutch parts wear out slower.
I learned something similar to your brake saying. "Brakes only slow you down."
There is a train line less than an hour from me that runs right on the coast. Goes past a popular beach.
Squirrel, you're supposed to turn into the nearer lane when turning onto a two lane road, so left turn into left lane, right turn into right lane.

this game is just stunning. great upload as always Dr. Squirrel
I don't believe. You are a first RUclipsr that know the basic of driving. Greetings from Poland mate.

There a good section In road craft about accelerate Sense also when a vehicle keeps breaking it's called comfort breaking 👍🏻
i have a suggestion for a mod btw you don't have to check it out but it is called DP's realistic traffic and it makes traffic more dense and changes the ai a bit to make them a bit less careful about preserving themselves i have been using it and really enjoy it.
I've been on the PCH a number of times and this looks just like it.
I hate sea food as well!
And you're absolutely right on the Depth of Field effect :D
I was told if you are slowing down you should lightly use the brake so that your brake light come on and that let's the car behind know you are slowing down .
Actually, when you use your brakes a lot instead of shifting down or using engine braking, you use more fuel.
I agree with him about the lengths of the trains most of the time in this game however that could be a short one because it;s in a yard and just switching stuff around.
so salmon starts its life in fresh water, spends most of its life in the ocean, then returns to the same river to reproduce. most of the salmon fished (at last in the USA) if not farmed happens at that last part
five driving habits everyone should do
1. aim high in steering
2. get the big picture
3. keep your eyes moving
4. leave yourself a out
5. make sure they see you
Thanks for the good tips. When i learn to drive i leran how to use the kunetic energy to my advantage.
Squirrel what you said about breaking while driving is what my dad told me. (I have a learners permit.)
Squirrel; that blurring effect i belive is Depth of field, which can be turned off in options.
THANK YOU!
Exciting 'murican trucking! Thanks a lot, Squirrel !
I also use my engine brake alongside my foot brake so it stops quicker so I use less of my foot brake to stop
at 25:00 you can use the middle yellow lane as a turn lane left both ways.
hi paul i can tell the difference when you hit the break pedal by the sound of the engine, also i like all yr vids and i mean all of them keep it up mate cant wait for the us dairies like the euro Q&A
2 good videos squirrel !! keep them comin now on 1.5
love the intro, ha your my second fav youtube and where i go on holiday the trainline
is closer but on a cliff
hey Squirrel u have inspired me as a 11 year old to buy Ats and a wheel,H shiftier to do what u do thanks i love Ur videos keep it up
It's wise to sometimes use your brake lights to signal to the vehicle behind that a sharp corner is approaching.
Kevin Solway That's a
That's a very common thing to do in the truckers world! In case the driver behind you is distracted by something else.
I don't know if it's because you're distracted by talking or something but you ignored/missed some speed limit changes and even ran a red light.
Steam Workshop has a limit of 1 GB, and Jazzycat said that it was because of the absence of ad revenue, although his mods also break the file limit.
What Jazzy mod is over 1GB?
The trailer pack is over 1GB.
AeroHydra
As so it is, never noticed before. So it's just one of his mods that go over, the rest are 200MB or less.
I believe those bridges on the 1 are new too.
Parasailing is a lot of fun I've done it!
Actually ..., the fuel usage means nothing unless you turn on Realistic Fuel Consumption, you can run your rig hard, and it will tell you 3mpg, but you'll only use 7.35mpg once you have all the skill points.
I'd just like to see acceleration and braking rocking forward and backwards of the cab......make it feel so much more real
Get more XP for an amount you are not using your breaks. That would be nice bringing into both Euro Truck and ATS.
When you were passing the Texaco plant, WHAT was going on in the parking lot on the other side of the road??? At one point it looked like 2 guys were holding another with yet another walking towards them.
They did Phoenix large for a reason, it takes forever to drive through
I can't use the rescale because my mods don't work well with it! I'd recommend Squirrel to try hitting the Nevada deserts, but since he's this far south, I'd say he should hit the Mojave.
On the subject of AI, in OMSI they respond to you flashing your lights. I wish this was in ETS2/ATS.
I'm with you on the sea food topic, I like salmon and Calamari. That's all, no matter what.
Squirrel you need to post way more of these videos
about the realism of the game, I wish they had the truck twist while accelerating, that would be cool.
Jake brake! But you have to know the route you are driving.
Love the intro! Also im surprised that squirrel dosent have a huge amount of comments and subrsribers!
Becase squirrel is the master of simulation! And i really like his content :D
Hi Paul. watching your videos from Latvia. anyway the game looks realistic
