The best advice I ever got in the hobby, was something like this: you take care of the water, the fish will take care of themselfs. One take care of the water by providing water circulation and filtration.
Now, on your question. I think fungal infections are contagious to a degree. Fungus reproduce by spores. What is relevant when it comes to the possibility of the spores infecting the fish is the concentration of the spores in the water. If the water in your tank is stagnant and the filtration is inadequate, then the concentration of spores is higher and so are the chances of the fungus to infect other fish. If you have good water circulation and good filtration, the chances to have portions of the tank whit high spores concentration, become lower and so are the chances of other fish getting fungal infection. That is why, if I see a fish with fungal infection in my tank, I'm not alarmed, because I'm confident that the conditions I offer (overfiltration) not only make the infection of the other fish not likely, but also will help with the infected fish recovery. I also, never medicate the entire tank (the only exception being anti ich medication) and I tend to treat fungal or bacterian infections by increasing the frequency of water changes, no chemicals, ever.

Seen my betta bite a guppy. Now he has a bite mark on his back that is white. I use 2 external pumps with very good water circulation. I doubt the water conditions are so bad everyone else get fungal... as long they don't get hurt or open wounds....

I have a pair of gold fish. One already has a fungal infection. After a few months, the other one got it as well. I don't know how to deal with it. it is a planted tank. So chemicals are out of the equation. What should i do?

API fin and body cure will work. You can try malachite green (Ick X) too.

Fungal infections are generally secondary and opportunistic infections, infecting after an injury or other disease make a fish susceptible to fungus. Even ich or HITH for example, the tell tale signs of white pimples is from fungus. I never considered a fungus infection one that would spread to other fish. Having said that I do keep sufficient fungus meds on hand in the event there is a whole tank breakout.

If it is a new fish unquaratined can pass fungus to other fish I have had it happen just like that. I got some endlers from a name store and put them in with my guppies and other endlers which had NO fungal infectes for three years. Then within 1 week of adding the new fish. BAM 1/4 of my guppies and endler got infected by fungus, even though the new fish did not get it. It is always best to err on the side of caution than to boldly risk paying out lots og casj for medications for one or more tanks. PLUS losing loads of fish. The fungus in question was velvet.

I had a strange illness in some new rasboras I added to my tank about a month ago. The fish became slightly patchy and their fins were clamped. 4 out of 5 died. The survivor (the smallest of them) is still alive and feisty. Other fish are still OK today except yesterday I noticed white patches on another rasbora of another species that was in this tank from day one. Besides the patches, the fish seems OK so far. This time I started the whole tank treatment with salt and meds. It's a small tank with low stock, so the hospital tank doesn't really make sense especially if the entire community might be affected at this point. I'm not happy about it because my tank has great parameters and is lush with plants. I wonder if it's related to the rasboras from last month. I mean, what kind of pathogen would incubate for 30 days!

I disagree with the part about bacteria not being contagious sure there is bacteria that are opportunistic but bacterial diseases such as columinaris have the ability to wipe out entire tanks full of healthy fish .

Never had luck trying to save any small fish, some were just sick from pet store and never noticed, will check them over better next time in the pet store, a few was my fault, live and learn. Quite a dedicated hobby.

A word you're looking for is 'communicable' which applies to your athletes foot comparison - it's communicable, but you don't need to take special precautions based on its mode of tranmission under normal circumstances

Got 10 guppies from the pet store a week ago- 1 had fungus after a couple days home! I treated the tank, couple days later she died after it progressed. 4 more over 3 days got fungus. They all died one at a time. I’ve tried all types of treatment (salt/garlic, umbrella sicknesses med tabs, now pimafix for fungal infections) been slowly upping the doses while separating the ones showing signs of fungal infection yet it keeps spreading. My betta even caught it for a couple days but he looks better after a couple days of the salt&tab meds. The last few guppies are STILL catching it and 3 currently show symptoms at varying degrees (2 more today even with all the meds) I’ve spent a lot of money on extra meds and new set ups this week, what else can I do?! I believe from the hell week I’ve had with my tanks that it’s absolutely just as contagious as athletes foot for people. I’m completely at a loss right now!🤷‍♀️😞

If it is a fungal infection, the anti-fungal meds should clear it up.
Try malachite green if you can get it. (Ick-X has it as a main ingredient)

Ive never actually thought about this before. but Ive never heard of a person "catching" a fungal disease from another person! Maybe Im wrong or maybe fish are different. I look forward to hear an answer from somebody that knows more about this stuff than I do! ( That shouldnt be too hard I guess). Lol.

It must depend upon different factors. I quarantined a botia loach i bought for four weeks. I put him into my community tank and he suddenly came down with what looked like fungus around his mouth area two days later. Probably stress induced and he may have been carrying something. I thought it was columnaris because his mouth was covered in what looked like cotton. I started medicating the tank and removed him again. it wasn't long before all my cory catfish got it, too. Their mouths were covered in that cotton looking "fungus". I had ten cory's, now i have two because whatever it was killed them.
The loach is no longer with us. He never recovered nor did he start to recover. He just went downhill.
My two remaining corys are ok now, but they both had a little bit of whatever that "fungus" was and their barbels are gone. They still eat ok and seem healthy after all these months later. All my rainbow fish never had a sign of illness.
Not sure what it was, but i don't want to see any fish go through that again. It was a mess.
    Take care

I agree with what another commentator said , "the fungus is in the water" and then disagree with basically everyone else on the planet about fish health.
I don't believe that fish 'catch' illnesses in anyway like humans do. Simply because they live and have evolved in water for so much longer than any land life forms have existed . Water is different than air , viruses, bacteria and fungus can live in the water column , nothing lives in air , sure stuff gets kicked up or coughed out in the atmosphere but no disease lives in the atmosphere , fish have evolved literally moving through a surface, breathing it in , coating their bodies with it . In every drop of living water on the planet it is full of microscopic life some beneficial some less so. I think anytime anyone's fish get 'sick' I feel they were stressed and a disease 'emerged' and took advantage of a weaker organism due to stress . I know fish keepers hate hearing this because they feel more guilty , but honestly our artwork , our craft is sooooooo unnatural . Imagine a large aquarium for your average fish keeper 55-125 gallons , then place that aquarium in a lake or river or the ocean , how many fish are existing in that size space ? Zero ? One ? A small school of fry ? Just being enclosed in a glass box and being exposed to certain fish hormones is enough to induce stress , just flicking the lights on can cause stress , I'm not anti fish keeping but think this is such an overlooked perspective , especially since so much of our hobby is guided by industry , think about how many more 40 gallon breeders or 20 gallon highs there are verses 180 gallon tanks , it's no mystery , industry can pump those smaller sizes out at profitable competitive pricing , shipping a 180 gallon incurs crazy loss , glass breaking so prices stay high WAY WAY high , people in the industry want to sell you products. what is more profitable , fish meds or giant glass boxes ??

Let me ask you this: Are you an expert on fish pathology and fish diseases? If you can answer yes with a PhD. to back it up with then I will stop saying quarantine your sick fish. Stop quarantining your new fish. No one is an expert except the experts with documentation to prove it.

      "Stop quarantining your sick fish"
That is something I do not understand.
Do you have your documentation for your PhD in PDF that i can look at, so I am able to believe you?
      (Just joking around) 🥰
