Instead, I saw your video, waited, and the spots didn't spread on him or to others. I waited about 5 days, and he is spot free. He looks healthy and doing well. I'm so glad I didn't get rid of him or medicate the whole tank.

This was extremely informative, thank you, Dan! 🙂👍 I think i may be dealing with this in one of my tanks. I treat with ich-x, but after about a month, it comes back. (No new fish in that tank for over a year.) Question: if you treat the tank with erithromycin, how long should you treat for, and would you wait to treat with the erithromycin after the ich-x gets rid of the symptoms on the fish or can you do both at the same time?
@@DanHiteshew-oneandonly thanks for answering. I won't do both at the same time. I read the article, too, very interesting, thanks for the link to that! These are black neons, and it looks most like one of the goldfish pics in that article, almost like a fungus, which is actually what I thought it was the first time. I noticed it last year, it was small and almost looked like a snake tried to swallow him but let him go. It's what we assumed happened as we had been fighting a losing battle with a Northern water snake that is determined to live in this pond. The snake has the option of a larger pond just yards away with small minnows but he's just not giving up on the goldfish pond. In the last 2 days I've noticed the white clumpy spots are larger and he has become listless, staying by himself, not eating, hiding under a lily. After watching your video, I'm certain it's epistylis and not Ick but how do I handle this in an outdoor pond, with other fish, frogs, water lilies? I hope you can help me. He's a big boy/girl(?) and a beauty. Our goldfish all started out as feeder fish, are 3 or 4 yrs old and are stunning. When I add cool water from the hose, they actually leap up into the sprinkling water, come when I go out to feed them etc. Happy fish all around so this will be a sad loss if we lose this big guy.
my betta has a white patch around her eye and it spred to the other eye. it is only around the eyes.do you know anything about this.it kinda just came really fast.
It is most likely either a fungal infection, or bacterial rot. I have had this with a couple of my betta in the past, and it needs to be treated right away. It spreads very fast and if it is rot, it will eat away chunks of your fish wherever it spreads to. I know there are people who say just using salt and other natural methods will cure your fish, but I have never had luck curing this type of infection in any of my fish using natural methods. I had to turn to medication to save their lives in these cases. However, you may have luck where I didn't. So I won't tell you what you should do as far as treatment. Just in my experience, the best luck I've had was using api fungus cure, general cure, and any of that blue anti fungal medication. I truly hope you can get your fish back in good health. And I hope what little info I offered is of help in some way as well:)
Oh! I just re read your comment, and think I may have a better understanding of what you described. Could it be Popeye? If so, that can be treated with a medication, or even just salt water and repeat water changes, keeping water nice and clean. I'm so sorry for the confusion.
I was wondering if you could maybe give some help on what I might be dealing with, I think 2 of my fish died in this tank from bad amonia burns, luckily I noticed and didna good water change and vacuumed the gravel to clear out the amonia but I noticed 2 of the other fish have these white dots only on the outside of their gills and nothing else but this other fish has none but 2 spots about the same area only both sides are missing scales and are this reddish color. I'm treating for ich right now but the white dots just seem too big but they arent sticking out like the other thing so it's weird, I'm not sure if it is ich and it's really confusing me. The fish with no white dots i was talking about with the missing scales is also starting to kind of slow down and sit at the bottom of the tank but then would go up and almost gasp for air at the top (the others arent doing it). But smothering this is too, before the 2 fish died they had swim bladder and one had this bulge that grew on the last day it was alive
Treat with antibiotics asap. Kanaplex is pretty good. It sounds like the fish with the red area has hemorrhagic septicemia, and the others may have infections as well. Ick-X is a good all-around treatment for external issues too.
@@DanHiteshew-oneandonly so I just found out that the ick that I thought I saw was actually things male goldfish get when they sexually mature which is why they are only on the gills. But those 2 are pretty much perfectly fine but I am concerned about the smallest one with the missing scales, I do not think it's what you just said because it's not that red but I ment red as in the scales look like they got ripped off so it looks like theres tiny blood spots but it's still concerning why the scales are missing
I never start bombing my tank with meds. If I see it quickly multiply onto established fish I might start treating. I currently have 2 lamb chop rasboras that are fairly knew and they have specks evenly distributed over their body. They’re eating good and they’re 10 others that don’t have specks and neither do my male guppies. If it spreads at all I’ll heat or medicate the tank but my gut feeling is it’s not ich
So if I have one goldfish that had a few white sand looking spots on its body, that did not spread to any other fish, it’s probably Epistylis? It’s been a week or more, so far no other fish are sick, I did separate the sick goldfish after a few days but it was definitely in the tank with the other fish for a while. The fish itself is a Ranchu that’s never been very active, but doesn’t seem any different then normal. Still eats.
It's hard to say, but it doesn't sound like Ick. Is the water cooler? Ick slows down as the temp drops. If they are in room temp of 70 degrees, the Ick will be slower to spread. If it's Epistylis, then putting the affected fish in clean water for a few days or so should clear it up. It will have no bacteria to feed on. a liitle aquarium salt wouldn't hurt either.
@@DanHiteshew-oneandonly I have fancy goldfish so I keep them around 72-74. The separated fish I was treating for Ick- he is in a 10gal that’s set closer to 80 with salt. The white spots seem to have dissipated except for some that are hanging on via a clear stringy string…. ? Not sure what to call it. It’s not a worm or anything, I’ve had anchor worms I know what they look like. It’s just the little grains of salt with a clear string that floats that’s attached to the fish. It’s hard to see all the Ick/whatever it is because it was only in his wen and he’s fairly white there to begin with plus against the texture it’s hard to see. Maybe I will dose with antibiotics just to be safe? I was having a random Nitrate spike in the big tank, so I wonder if that caused whatever issues this one fish has.
Thank you I’ve lose 8 so far 8 left know I know I was treating the wrong thing I change the water ,got the temp down got the right medicine fish when from swimming on there side to schooling almost in minutes your awesome dude!

I haven't taken a close look yet at the white spots I have on my Angelfish, but I will in a few minutes to determine which problem I have. My question is this, will Ich-x harm my Cory Catfish? I have read many articles. Some say it will not, then others say it can. I really want to know for sure before I treat my tank. Thank you all.
Had Ick once when i had no medication. Turned up the heat until it reached 87 and back down the moment it hit there. in 2 days the spots where gone...j.s.
im doing like 7 table spoon of salt in my tank for 14 dayfor my 10 gallon till the ick dyhydrate and then ill slowly water chaange the salt out over time
@@melissas2173 I'm sorry. I can't remember everything i've said in all my videos. You can mix Kanaplex or other meds into gelatin in order to make medicated food. If you think you have Ick or epistylis, just use the Ick-X. It'll work.
Epistylis and ich are both caused by ciliates, little creatures that live in water; there are thousands of species. As others have suggsted a clean tank with good media, and adequate circulation are important. Also, salt kills them, but remember the salt you put in your tank does not go away without water changes to dilute it. These kind of maladies usually infect fish through the gills, because that is their most sensitive spot, similar to human nostrils. A poorly maintained tank will often have high nitrate levels, and that harms the fish's respiratory system, and when weakened they are much more susceptible to the various kinds of cilia.

I hope so. Remember, if it's epistylis, don't turn your temperature up. Keep the water as cool as is safe for the fish. Do plenty of water changes to remove the free floating bacteria too. good luck!

Oh! I just re read your comment, and think I may have a better understanding of what you described. Could it be Popeye? If so, that can be treated with a medication, or even just salt water and repeat water changes, keeping water nice and clean. I'm so sorry for the confusion.
I'm sorry, but I've never seen anything like that. Fungal infections usually grow over the eyes.
Well i dunno if its ich too but i put my temperature around 87f for few days then turn slowly to 80.. ich hate warm water
but epistylis absolutely thrives in warm water, so be sure you know what you're treating before turning he temperature up.
Will this epistylist live in saltwater tanks.cuz I’ve treated my tank for ich and it’s not getting better and only my tang has it
I don't think so. Not too knowledgeable about saltwater, sorry.
Thank you so much! This was so helpful!!
Glad it was helpful!
Very informative! Excellent video!
For real people always mix them up.. and I’ve never been successful with dealing with epistylis
It was the malachite green that cleared it up for me.
Love that Angel fish very attentive to you, lol thank you for info
But those 2 are pretty much perfectly fine but I am concerned about the smallest one with the missing scales, I do not think it's what you just said because it's not that red but I ment red as in the scales look like they got ripped off so it looks like theres tiny blood spots but it's still concerning why the scales are missing
what is the name of the giant green plant in the center behind you?
Java fern.
Ty!!! You just saved me so much time and my fish!
Sounds like just use ich x for either
Ick-X works on a wide variety of fish diseases.
Thankyou for sharing
great info! Thanks!
Can you make a video about naturally treating anchor worms. Thank you.
Fantastic video quality 👍
Thanks 👍
Thank you I’ve lose 8 so far 8 left know I know I was treating the wrong thing I change the water ,got the temp down got the right medicine fish when from swimming on there side to schooling almost in minutes your awesome dude!
Glad to hear it!
Necesito ayuda.
Metronidazol
ERITROMICINA
Praziquantel
Ciprofloxacina.
Por favor espero tu respuesta.
I don't know what you're asking, and it won't translate for me.
Very useful info, thanks.
It shouldn't harm them.
Any opinion on raising the temperature of the tank to kill ick?
I don't think it's worth it. If you're using Ick X or similar, you can raise the temp a bit, but be sure to use an air tone
Had Ick once when i had no medication. Turned up the heat until it reached 87 and back down the moment it hit there. in 2 days the spots where gone...j.s.
Thanks For Sharing ✍
Thank you
thank you for the video
So to be safe is it best just to treat with ich x so you will be treating one or the other either way?
Yes, that's what I recommend.
Soooo if I'm not sure should I use Ich X since it works on both?
Yes.
You're a life saver I got really worried but thank youuu
Awesome video. Very informative.
Can one or two fish out of10 in a tank have either of these diseases and the others do not?
It's unlikely but possible I suppose,
Its cool how you teach people this stuff. You should talk about ammonia burns.
Ok, I'll try to get in one about that.
Lost an entire tank of fish thinking it was ich, wish I watched this video.
Things get out of hand quickly when the fish are stressed and or the water quality is bad
im doing like 7 table spoon of salt in my tank for 14 dayfor my 10 gallon till the ick dyhydrate and then ill slowly water chaange the salt out over time
What is this medicated fish food?
I don't know about food, but Ick-X will treat epistylis.
@@DanHiteshew-oneandonly you mentioned medicated food in your video?
@@melissas2173 I'm sorry. I can't remember everything i've said in all my videos. You can mix Kanaplex or other meds into gelatin in order to make medicated food.
If you think you have Ick or epistylis, just use the Ick-X. It'll work.
Thank you so much for your video, you haved saved to all my 16 african cichilds
Glad it helped!
You should eally read up on Ich and epistylis.
@@DanHiteshew-oneandonly I don't have to, there are infallible experts like you at hand, that have never made a mistake and know everything about everything.
@@nobrainsnoheadache2434 Well good.
Wow had no idea 😮
Very helpful dan . I luckily have only faced ick a couple of times. In 45 years of keeping fish . I seem to be suffering from Aquarium fatigue at the moment where I just can not be bothered, it’s almost like fish keeping depression where the motivation just goes. I do think when you are in the hobby years you go through ups and down . But you clearly can’t just get rid of lots of established tanks . I’m hoping my enthusiasm will return watching some of your vids. 👍 Do you ever get fed up with it or stay enthusiastic?
Oh no. I don't always stay enthusiastic about it. Some days it's all I can do just to turn the lights on and feed everyone. Just ride it out. Keep the fish in good enough conditions so they stay healthy, and it'll pass. Just don't force it, or it'll never be fun again.
@@DanHiteshew-oneandonly cheers dan I just feeling a bit flat about the hobby I suppose we all focus on fish etc but no so much on the mental side of an ongoing long term daily Hobby and motivation needed and ups and down . Thanks for the encouragement and advice 👍 as I don’t know many Into what we do over here in the uk who gets it . Luckily I only have three tanks but they are big tanks so it’s like you say riding out the lows 👍 and at the mo I just can’t seem to find enjoyment I don’t hate it there is just no fun . It’s like it’s become irritating having to do stuff . Can’t put my finger on why . Hopefully things will pick up. I had covid recently so it could be that
@@jefffleet9546 Yeah, I get it. It becomes a chore like taking out the trash (or should I say rubbish lol). Not a big deal, but definitely not something you're enjoying.
I try to remember when it was all new and fascinating. It sorta reminds me why I love it.
@@DanHiteshew-oneandonly the buzz word is recycling nowadays not trash or rubbish 😜 👍 and canoe instead of kayak that’s another I’ve noticed 🤣 only messing.
@@jefffleet9546 Lol I watched a video about a "canoe" mission in WWII and it clearly showed them in a kayak over and over. It drove me nuts. Lol
A canoe has a single head paddle and either you kneel or sit on a bench style cross bar. A kayak has a double headed paddle, and a fitted seated. Those are the only real differences between them.
Very helpful!!!
Thanks for the info! I picked up a goldfish from Petsmart this week that I thought had ick. Treated with meds and warm water for 2 days and it got worse. Watched this video and immediately took out the heater from the tank. I’ll go to the store tomorrow and get salt and malachite green.
Unrelated: I’ve never seen an angelfish be so still in the water. She/he is beautiful!
Thanks! Good luck. I hope it clears up.
“She was apparently exceptionally easy to train” 😉😉
Hey everybody!
New subscriber here, very interesting this as I've never heard of epistylist thanks for sharing
A couple of weeks ago I found a what looked like a big white head pimple on the top of my butterfly koi fin just one spot I had no idea what it was so I decided not to jump into treating something without knowing more so all I did was a 80% water change and add about a cup of salt to the tank and now I can still see where it was but it has shrunk to almost gone
Well, this is a real life horror story how depressing
Pretty sure you just helped me
I hope so. Remember, if it's epistylis, don't turn your temperature up. Keep the water as cool as is safe for the fish. Do plenty of water changes to remove the free floating bacteria too. good luck!
Lost half my 85 gallon tank thinking it was ich wish I saw this earlier still in the middle of the battle gonna get ich x
I think I have Epistylis I they have small white spots on their tails please let me know what is going on
He did
Epistylis I think is a Bacterial Parasite because it does use a host
Will salt harm my plants?
A teaspoon per gallon usually doesn't. especially if it's a short term treatment, rather than full time salted tank.
Salt actually will help cure epistylis says so in the Fish Disease Diagnosis & Treatment book. Page 155-156. Also says formalin is good for if it is resisting treatment.
I was in the fence about getting that book. You just convinced me I should.
How much salt? A salt bath, or just a teaspoon per gallon? I think I said a salt bath would probably kill it.
@@DanHiteshew-oneandonly umm yea like a medium dose, not a bath just leaving it in tank
@@DanHiteshew-oneandonly 1 teaspoon per litr or 4 for 1 gallon .
I use amoxsacilyn mixed with the food liquid way and do twice a day salt bath for 15 min and results are amazing. Had 4k female molly almost fully covered with it ,after 2 days only 20% spots were left and she was swiming happy 🙂.. Epsom salt no flavor ,does the magic !!!
i wonder if epistylis is the same as what is know as “stress ick”
I'm not sure. I only heard that term for the first time yesterday.
😭 I have my temp. raised to 84°f
If it's Ick, and you're treating with meds, that's ok. if it's Epistylis, then you need to lower the temp as much as you safely can.
Marble veil tail angel fish ❤😊
When you say heavy salt bath how much salt are ya talking about mate
About a 1/4 cup of salt (Epsom salt would work too) in a gallon of water, for 10 minutes or so.
@@DanHiteshew-oneandonly OK thanks pal gonna write that down in my book
#HeyEverybody
Thank you for pointing this out. I will definitely know to look out for this the next time my fishes get white dots 🙂
Love your channel but salt does kill ich Cory from aquarium co op explained in a video I even tried it myself and yay it does kill ich it did take awhile about a month
Epistylus… copper sulphate
Sir while you're talking my fish is dying. PLEASE just get to what I need to do
Did it work? did I talk faster after you posted this?
Learn about playback speed settings.
I see epistylis as "pre-columnaris" they happen in almost the same water conditions, I have heard people say it can be an early sign of columnaris
I lost a whole colony of black bar endlers due to secondary infections
Wouldn't it feed on columnaris?
It is a ciliate which is in the protozoa Phylum. They look interesting under a microscope.
