The Grand Rabbi's Bagleiten Ceremony | HIGH HOLIDAYS in the streets of JEWISH BROOKLYN ep 6

  • For my last video in this series, I attend a Bagleiten. A Bagleiten is a special tradition of the Satmar sect, and it takes place at the end of three major holidays: Sukkos, Shavuos and Passover. The entire congregation accompanies the grand rabbi home at the end of each of these holidays, and the Rabbi steps out on the balcony to address the congregation. Hasidic Rabbis are in a way royalty, and this ceremony is a royal procession with the presence of the New York police force and lively crowds. Due to the split in the Satmar sect, the Bagleiten is not as big as it used to be.

Your son is correct. What a wonderful series, Frieda. Your storytelling abilities are evident as you guide us through these holiday celebrations. Other than Passover-and my depth of knowledge was very superficial-I didn’t know the meaning or significance of the other holidays. I can see how documenting this world is a labor of love for you. I’ve said it before and will say it again, I hope your channel continues to grow.

I was only in Williamsburg once, around 1987-1988; I went there to put up flyers advocating for the release of Jonathan Pollard; as I was taping a flyer to a telephone pole, a Satmar man asked me who Jonathan Pollard was; then he explained to me that no one else in the community would be interested in this issue because :
1 - the flyer was in English instead of Yiddish
2 - I was wearing blue jeans and nobody would be interested in an issue being publicized by an obvious outsider to their community
When I was done putting up the flyers I got a bagel and coffee in a Satmar restaurant and I saw all the baby strollers left outside unattended with the babies in them - I thought this was very unsafe but they did this in Crown Heights also where I was living at the time
Thank you for these great videos and for bringing back memories of my visit to Williamsburg many years ago
    Happy Chanukah 🕎 !
