    Thanks, HC, for another great video. I don't know why you needed what looks like an apology for including the march going by the site though. That's part of what's going on around the project.

    • @HospitalConstruction

      I wouldn't call it an apology, merely an explanation of why it is there, for those people who inevitably complain it "isn't construction". Throughout the years on this channel, when I've documented the construction projects, I've occasionally included events that happen in plain view nearby and happen to be caught on camera. For example, protests, police action, earthquakes, unusual weather, air show flyovers, people antics, etc. Thanks for your support!

    • @HospitalConstruction
      @HospitalConstruction  4 года назад +1

      I do sometimes add descriptions for certain things that show up for the first time if I know what they are (such as the "pea shooter" in this episode). But, although I have learned a few things watching them over the years, I'm not an expert by any means, and I often don't know exactly what they're doing -- might not know much more than your cat! There are some knowledgeable viewers around here, so sometimes if you ask you can get an answer. There are a lot of specialized niches on RUclips, I'm proud be one of the first in the "Construction videos for cats" niche! I have had a couple construction equipment companies inquire about sponsorships (which I've turned down), but no cat food companies yet!

      @@HospitalConstruction You have a great sense of humour. I like your music selection - especially western tune for the concrete "cowboys". I wish you add some scores from Benny Hills, but i am afraid there might be some copyright issues. But there are a lot of young composers who could write music especially for your videos - you are an international star! People from so many countries are following the construction. (by the way, if you don't read Russian, i could tell that the most of comments and questions in Russian are very professional)

    • @Bill_N_ATX
      @Bill_N_ATX 4 года назад +2

      Cancun Carpenter, one of the big advantages of reinforced concrete buildings is superior fire resistance. With exposed iron you have to insulate it to protect it from the heat of a fire. Think WTC towers. In a residential setting for seniors and the disabled you want the best fire safety you can design since many of them would have difficulty self evacuating from a multistory building in the event of a fire. These types of buildings have their own set of codes in the NFPA Life Safety Code 101 and they are very strict.

    I am curious about the concrete enclosed core. The edge was poured uneven. Some men snapped chalk lines and then used lumber to make for the gap. I can't imagine that is an acceptable solution. It happens around 3:28.

    • @davehartnett2901
      @davehartnett2901 4 года назад

      From my guess, I’ve done parking garages. I’m an ironworker. That core is usually one of the last things to go up with the structure. It is probably going to get structural iron then a pour. The lumber is just temporarily covering the hole. I assume much of these levels is for parking considering the lack of structural iron. IW 67 Des Moines IA

    • @adamsonofdon2766
      @adamsonofdon2766 4 года назад +1

      The lumber pinned to the wall is a ledger for the “outside” formwork to eventually rest on.

    • @silentepsilon888
      @silentepsilon888 4 года назад +4

      the core I see is the elevator shaft. It is heavily loaded with iron and has slip forms inside that get pulled up to pour the next floor. It also has exterior forms that are stored in a rack alongside the road on the left and they get set on wooden shelf boards at the right level for the next pour. It does not matter if the concrete is slightly uneven as the next pour just continues on top of the last to eventually build a solid core tower all the way up to the top floor

    WHAT'S WITH THE BLUE SMURF?

  • @travis1555
    @travis1555 4 года назад

    Why do they put the rebar columns in upside down? The rebar should have the dog leg at the top, stirrups start 2" from bottom go to top of concrete at what ever spacing then the dog leg kicks in towards the center at top of slab. Next level same, they pick up better with the crane and are easier to set. It's really nice if they supply a smaller stirrup for the top of the dog leg just to hold the bars at the right angle and inside the cage of the next level that sits down on it, but tie wire works to.

    • @TheMula48
      @TheMula48 4 года назад +2

      the deck that there building does get removed. 20 to 30 days after they poured the concrete or when the concrete reaches full strength. When the deck set up, the beam's are also formed. See the center area down the center of the building, where they have boards laid across that they uses as walk ways. Those are the beams. Also the entire floor is acting as a beam.

    • @docugraf
      @docugraf 4 года назад +2

      around 25:25 you can see the wooden parts are being removed by the workers

    • @Bill_N_ATX
      @Bill_N_ATX 4 года назад

      FRANK LINDSEY, yep and I was wondering why they were not putting a lot of rebar in those beams but in the coming attractions shot at the end of this weeks video you can see a shot of a lot of post tension cables being strung in the cavities. Very cost effective and a good solution since you’ll never want to cut into or modify those in the future, the only real disadvantage of post tension concrete.

    • @constructionwatcher5381
      @constructionwatcher5381 4 года назад

      I just realized that huge beam they are forming from the elevator core to the rear of the site is going to be under the north wall of the high-rise part of the building. See the renderings at handelarchitects.com/project/1001-van-ness -- especially the second and third renderings, which show the north side of the project.

    Nice blue dress the guy is wearing. Can't say the man doesn't take his safety seriously . Smock, vest, face covering, face shield, hopefully hearing protection, LOL.
    I have seen high rise buildings built before. Granted it's been a while but never one with so much steel . Is this because of earthquake codes in San Fran? It's almost like the joke where someone puts so much creamer or sugar in their coffee and someone quips "you like a little coffee with your creamer /sugar?" Only in this case it would be, "would you like a little concrete with your steel." Not complaining or criticizing just curious as I'm not an architect or builder so know nothing about high rise building requirements.
    I know it's not possible to provide a bunch of commentary explaining everything that is going on beyond the minimum provided but I admit there are times when I just wonder what the heck they are doing. Why are some of the outer columns square and some round. What are the little blue things they nail to the plywood? I'd hate to be the poor guys that have to go around marking where they all go, ekk. The list goes on and on. LOL. Sorry curiosity can be a curse at times. I'm not actually asking for answers here, just explaining how I feel sometimes when watching.

    • @Bill_N_ATX
      @Bill_N_ATX 4 года назад

      Losttoanyreason, the blue man looked to be the site safety inspector. Every major site usually has one both to check that things are being done safely and as legal, contractual, and insurance required inspector. If you are the safety guy, you have to take it to the next level.
      As for your questions, this is actually a pretty good group of viewers. There are some people with construction experience in the regular community of this channel. They’ll answer mot questions and have in the past. Just go back and read the comments on some of the older videos in this series. You’ll find answers to most of your questions, like why they are using so much rebar, what the blue things are, and other construction related questions.

      You know this is in San Francisco? The San Andreas fault and the Hayward fault are each about 10 miles from here, east and west respectively. Either of them could produce a large earthquake, more than a 7.0. When one of them kicks off any high rise buildings with normal construction, normal outside an earthquake zone, will be in serious trouble. The three floor building I worked in in Alameda had 80' piles. They acted like a keel, because there was nothing under the building except sand and mud.

      AffordBindEquipment, they are using flexible plastic conduit that comes with the conductors already in the tube. Saves a bunch of time....called smurf tube since the original vendor of the stuff colored them blue. Now they come in every color of the rainbow but white or gray being pretty common in commercial work. Anything not placed in poured concrete will have to be the usual EMT but the plastic works great especially the pre wired stuff.

    • @adamsonofdon2766
      @adamsonofdon2766 4 года назад +3

      A big response for working within 6’ for Covid-19 is face shields. A lot of companies are buying this type of helmet with the drop down eye protection. This, coupled with the face covering allows us to work. It’s a lot of people up there on that deck. Imagine we all had to maintain six foot!!
      A lot of general contractors were switching to more of an “arborist” style helmet for the ventilation and chin strap. Especially for high rise work, traditional hard hats have been known to fly away!!

    • @alanshelby5980
      @alanshelby5980 4 года назад +2

      These type hard hats are a lot cooler, safer and easier to wear that the hard hat. Old hablit die hard. You don't need to spend time picking up you hard hat.
      The Chinstrap keep you helmet on if you take a tumble.

    • @bobross3144
      @bobross3144 4 года назад +2

      Its new to the construction industry in the US. Its a European style helmet and the data shows it better protects the wearer, specifically in situations where they trip or fall. Trips, slips and falls are the leaders in workplace insurance claims and this style helmet cuts down claims. If you have less historical insurance claims, your insurance is cheaper which makes you more competitive at bidding jobs. The whole industry will eventually have this style hardhat/helmet.
