- Shadowlands 9.2.5 Retribution Paladin mythic+ guide to make it look like you aren't getting carried every week. Retribution paladin is a very simple spec but that does not mean mistakes are impossible, attack before the tank gets threat can immediately end your entire pull wasting all your CDs so be careful. Also the more you play Retribution, the more you'll discover new ways to make the best out of low utility kit. Just keep at it and have fun!

As someone who has played ret for years and have watched many a ret guide in my time, somehow this is the best one? I would without a doubt recommend this to anyone learning ret. Definitely subbing and coming back to look for any guides for new classes/specs I might pick up in the future!

New subscriber! Thank you for the info, I main holy, and have been since BC. I’ve recently found myself trying out the Ret spec and this is the only explanation that has made sense! I realize I’m “doing it wrong”. But the way you’ve highlighted and broken it down I think will help me feel confident in the group and not like they’re carrying me. I’m KSM as holy and last season was really close as Ret. I think with the small tweaks I’ve learned in your video, I’ll be able to achieve KSM as Ret as well. Thank you!

Blinding light is also huge against the mask ads in DOS. You can "kill" a bunch by timing it right :)
Yep, that's a great use for blinding light, however wake of ashes will also stun the masks as they're undead :D. So in your burst you clear a cone of safety in of you on the spirit pulls
Very beginner friendly guide! Now I understand a lot more on how a ret pally can be played. Do you have a fury warrior guide or do you plan on making one?
I do not yet have a fury warrior guide, its actually one of only 2 classes I have not played at all this patch, the other being mage. The odds of a warrior guide before dragonflight is very very low. I recommend checking out Danwarr, he plays for method and is the best warrior I know who is open to helping on his stream. I do believe his guides are written only tho

Thank you so much for the awesome guide! As a new pally player it's helped me a lot. Quick question though: you mention a nuisance between discerning when to build to 5 or spend at 3 HP, but don't mention what discerns it. Every guide I see says build to 5 but no one says why. Could you shed some light (pun intended) on that matter? Why should I be building to 5 instead of just spending at 3?
So I intentionally leave out a lot of min/max nuance in these because I think that a brand new player shouldn’t consider those smaller things as they tend to promote tunnelling/bad habits and makes it much more overwhelming.
The simple reason you build (but don’t over cap) to 5 over spending at 3 is just cuz your builders have cooldowns and your spenders don’t. So it’s better to use cooldowns - on cooldown - than spend since you’re not wasting damage by building 2 extra holy power to 5. But you would be wasting damage by letting certain things sit off cooldown.
Furthermore, the tier set complicates this because you want to Wake/Blade on cooldown ASAP so if you build to 5 religiously you could catch yourself using judgement/crusader strike to get to the 5th, then Wake resets and now you have to spend however because you just had to ignore Wake for one GCD now you’ve risked the tier set proc’ing again and wasting a charge of Wake and missing 1-3 seconds of Wake cooldown will net up to like 10-12 fewer casts over a dungeon, which is 30+ holy power.
So yea it’s a slippery slope to over sell the building to 5 *always* for new players. I think it’s much more effective that people discover this nuance (or just ignore it) once they get super comfortable with the rest of the kit.

Hey this UI is not made by me, but the key addons are:
ElvUI for overall look/blizzard ui elements replaced, AddonSkins to make everything darker, omni CD for party members cooldown tracking, Clique for healing and utility mouseover, a Weakaura package for all the spells you see in the middle and around my hp bar and then BigWigs + LittleWigs for dungeon timers.
I also used SavedInstances and Altholic for tracking all different characters, transmogrifyResize to make the transmog screen gigantic and Handynotes for questing/rares/treasures.

If ret has aggro issues, thoughts on opening up with a conc each pull to just pad out the time for threat b4 u burst?
Yea I mean do anything you can to not immediately die. But realistically if the tank isn't blasting, or you don't have a good potent misdirect in the group, you will still rip tons of agro when you burst. Especially on pulls where you lust/have a damage amp.
However as your tank gets more skilled/you play with better tanks you will have to worry about agro much less. You never are free from the worry but your tank has to be on top of their game. It also varies on what tank you're playing with. With a DH for example, once you see them drop kyrian sigil and it pulses the 2nd time, you should be safe. Or a prot pala using divine toll also would mean you're safe for the most part. But a blood DK will need a few seconds while they get their stuff rolling.

The wowhead and IV guides confused the heck out of me. This video is super clear! Exactly what i needed!!! Only question is - should i play ret! I feel like it's going to be impossible to get invited in to pugs.
You definitely shouldn't feel bogged down about people inviting you or not due to your class. The reality is your acceptance rate for applying to keys is very low regardless because there are SOOOO many applicants and so few groups. My advice is to make your own group, but more solidly my advice would be to remember the people that perform well in your pug keys and add them or message them and ask if they wanna play together, and withinn a week or two you'll have at least a dozen homies to blast keys with

OPC is excellent just hold it for wings, it and a mythic Old Warrior’s Soul will be one of your best pairings. However if you don’t have access to Mythic SOD, soleah’s is excellent passive option make sure to sim yourself to determine which stat you want from Soleah. Ticking is ok but main stat benefits you much more than mastery.
So apparently I’m not playing my pally correctly, but on the action bar what’s the best set up that you can put?
Binds and hotkeys are purely personal preference. Just make sure your fingers aren't hurting and nothing is too far away. my primary rotation binds are
1 2 3 4 5 F R T V
and the shift modifiers of all of them plus 6 more numpad binds that are on my mouse and the ctrl and shift modifiers of that too. But yea its totally personal preference :-)

at 8:04 you talk about art of war resetting cd of blade of wrath. You meant blade of justice i assume? I'm new so ended up googling this.
Yea sorry, there’s a note in the description. I always call the ability blade of wrath. So many blades and so many wraths. Blade of wrath is the talent with the same icon

Damn I always drop consecration down first thing. It really isn’t worth the gcd even if the whole pack will be standing in it for its full duration? I usually press it 2-3 times a pack lol. I’ll try your way thanks for this guide
Np! Yea min-maxing consecrate uptime will have very little reward. As you play for a long while you’ll eventually find those moments where you can sneak in a conc drop, like let’s say you have to move away from the backstage mobs in Kara, you can drop conc and move out so it’s ticking while you’re at range but yea definitely don’t think too hard about consecrate, cheers!
@@notSachy since watching and commenting I've made it a big point to only hit consecrate when I have literally noting else to do and my dps has for sure improved because of it. thank you. It seems like I might drop it once every 60-90 seconds during a boss fight and it is usually if i get unlucky with art of war procs. i just started doing +10 mythics where i get the haste buff and that makes the rotation so smooth i love it.

Now how do you get invites into keys? I’m having an incredibly hard time getting into M 2s much less getting KSM.
At the very start of the patch it's going to be basically impossible to get into anything, try listing your own group and you'll see you get dozens of applicants immediately and obv you only take 4 out of that bunch. I ended this week at 1650 score and still, last night i was getting declined for over an hour before i got into one.
My recommendation is just list your own key, yes you will sometimes get your own key depleted but it's better running a key that gets depleted than not running keys at all. It will get easier to get into groups as your score goes up and the patch goes on. Just make it your goal to get some score every day, even if just a couple points :D
Also make sure you're prepared, mythic +2 drops 262 ilvl right now so be near that before applying or just list your own key and build yourself a team if you're below it. Make sure you also have all your tier and legendaries/soulbinds.

9:55 sorry, I don't get it, why shouldn't I BoP the tank?
all immunities cause you to drop threat, so BoP'ing the tank will make all the mobs turn and start killing people unless the tank clicks it off before the server ticks and recalculates threat. Basically everyone except the tank will die :D

You’ll never catch me saying “haste to 30 then mastery” or anything like that.
Sim yourself via link the description. We got smart robots to let us know what stats we need at any given time, anyone ripping numbers out of the air is making stuff up that won’t necessarily benefit your character specifically
3:27 thats not really the thing with ret. 90% of rets are noobs and dont use their utility but it can be pretty useful sometimes, especially in pugs when things are always messy. You can top heal your tank/healer with 1 click, you can throw huge hp heal crits with 1 click, you can give your tank 30% dmg reduction, you can give your healer immunity from psychical dmg etc.
I only play plate classes and thats why i like ret. Warrior or dk are pretty much just mongo dps
This guide was good....but.
Ret is entirely dependent on their cds. The spec can line up multiple 1 or 2 minute cds into a major or minor burst every minute. Outside of those burst windows, Ret is subpar damage. I feel like it's kind of a big deal you didn't explain how to line up the 2 minute and 1 minute bursts.
Hey, appreciate the feedback and I'll try to lean more emphasis on talking about cooldowns in the future.
However in the current patch (9.2.5) ret does not have the 1 min burst it had all expansion, once we got our tierset that build fell by the wayside as we can't hold wake of ashes for it anymore, we don't talent into seraphim, don't talent into reckoning, nor execution sentence or empyrean power, nor do we even run Pelagos. We have one singular DPS cooldown - wings - so you should not be feeling like you have to line anything up, you don't hold anything in prep for wings either.
@@notSachy Ah, thanks for the information and correcting me and sorry for making a bad assumption. I have been away for about a year and don't have tier, yet, so I didn't know I was giving bad information. When we've been playing 1 min cds for so long and dragonflight looks like that's what we'll be doing again, well...my bad.

Necro cov ability seems more better
Unfortunately it loses in every single circumstance. I could see it working if your group doesn't have a necrolord and you *need* to push Plaguefall, the ret player will lose damage by being necro in PF, but the group will gain a lot since necro is op af in PF.
The only other covenant you could argue is decent-ish is nightfae, but its another case of your damage will go down but the group's damage might maybe go up. Kyrian Mikanikos is just too strong.
@@notSachy but necro gives 2 hammers > 2 templars> 2 aoe no?.....kyrian only gives haste buff per pack yes ..I know...but that's all I can see atm....even necro gives more mastery aswel ...maybe use necro and stack a bit more haste to make it play smoother as if we're kyrian...but with more free DPS with the 2 charges of hammer
I only just started and watching all videos atm so all info is great...
Necro is 2 divine storms every 30 seconds but it’s costing you 2 templars. So you’re being forced to spend 3 holy power on single target when you could’ve spent it on aoe. So at the end of the day per spending 3 holy power you’re getting 1 divine storm.
However divine toll gives you 3-5 holy power per 45-ish seconds and then 3 more over 15 seconds so you’re getting 6-8 holy power to spend as you wish. Plus mikanikos effusive anima damage, plus the haste and then bron himself. Not to mention each divine toll judgment also increase finisher damage by 25% per target. It just completely outclasses necro in keys.

Yes and no. Haste to 25ish then mastery always. Cd management is everything separating highlord paladins from alters. Class takes commitment to own. Also consecrate helps trigger things so don't sleep on it. Honestly better cast than crusader strike. Crusader strike is almost no damage just there for hp gen. Only hit on 2 charge to maintain cd
he basically said all these things in the video, except the stats but just sim yourself, no stat is bad for ret. And no way you crusader to maintain cd it’s not important enough to press over wake/blade, just let it sit there until you get to it in prio
