I was bass player for the company with Lynne and played on this track as well. Lynne was a total sweetheart... friendly, warm, a team player. I was at her and Larry's (her husband's) place a couple of times for poker nights or some such thing. This wasn't even her normal role in the show and she killed this song. That's how talented and flexible she was. Even after they moved to LA and Lynne started getting major supporting roles, she stayed real and down to earth.
Killed it is an understatement. The range, power and control on this performance is just insane. I remember her from many acting roles and of course you had the privilege of being a friend. This sticks out for me years later. And you cooked pretty hard too!
@@loadedorygun The movie didn't really do justice to the stage performances but the songs captured it pretty well. It's interesting to watch if only because of how young everyone was. I was 21 years old when I recorded this soundtrack and Lynn was just a couple of years older than that. IIRC we recorded the soundtrack for this film in four days while also performing the shows that evening... except for me. I was touring east coast cities with a duo opening for the singer, Melanie, so I'd race from the studio to LGA, catch a flight to Tampa or Atlanta, do the soundcheck and the show and then run back to the airport to catch the red eye back to NYC... long before TSA and pre-check when you could literally run from the cab to the plane a minute before they shut the door.
Lynn Thigpen's rendition of "O, Bless the Lord" inspired my own high school rendition of the song in the 1980's. She is gone, but certainly not forgotten. 💜
I was born in 1961 and my mother managed theaters so I saw pretty much everything for most of my young life. I loved this movie then and to this day Lynn Thigpen's stunning rendition of this song makes me blubber like a baby. It's that powerful and beautiful.
Lynn killed it but I know even she would agree that Delores Hall delivered the ultimate performance of this song on stage at the Promenade Theater in 1972. Delores was a veteran gospel diva with an unbelievably powerful range and voice who brought down the house every time she sang this number.
I was fifteen in 1973, an angry boy at lots of things in general, and with my own life. Adolescent, in a simple word. But really lost, being son of a divorced couple after years of heavy war at home. This movie made a turning point. It touched me deeply, and although life didn't change at once, it helped me understand its meaning, that it's not as easy as I would "demand", and mainly, that there's a Master who rules the universe, no matter how one calls Him. I thank the beauty and kindness of this production, which made me start to see the world in a different way for better.
I totally get it. I love this musical for so many reasons. God bless you and my parents who took me to see this musical in 1974, State University of New York, Fredonia. I cried so many times during the performances. I truly believe I was touched by the Holy Spirit.
Thank you for the testimony and I hope you are walking close to the Lord now. I've also had a dark past which created deep mental scars and troubles through my life. I asked Jesus into my life as a teenager but believe God had his hand on me throughout my life, in spite of my falling away God never let me go. It's taken so long but I can say with God's mercy I am walking close to him now.

I used to watch her in "Carmen Sandiego" all the time and just loved it! I'd watch it with my young niece and nephew. It was later that I found out she was in the original Godspell film. Just an amazing talent. It so broke my heart to learn she was gone from this world.
Thank you for your comment. I know that this is based on the Bible, and most of it came from the book of Matthew, but I could never find this particular section. To find out that it is a psalm is almost a Godsend. Thank you again.
Back in 1975 , in 7th and 8th grade in a middle school in San Jose, I had this fantastic choir teacher that loved Godspell. We sang all these songs. Now at 60 I am SO grateful to her. She was foundational in building my faith and I didn’t even know it. She planted seeds in many of us…. I forget her name but I know I’ll see her in Heaven.
I have to watch this about every 2 weeks to boost my serotonin levels. RIP Lynne, and I hope it's a joy in the afterlife to know how much joy you've given to us down below.
Godspell was amazing. One of my favorite pieces of music to sing in folk group in the 70s was this song! The keyboards are fantastic and ridiculously powerfully too. We really "brought it" when we presented it in Mass. we moved the congregation to their feet!. I was even lucky enough to sing the solo in Day-By-Day.. An incredibly perfect compilation of songs to mark a brilliant time in music. Thanks for this walk down memory lane ❤🙏
A friend sent me this scripture today, and immediately this song was running through my mind. My Dad brought home the Godspell soundtrack when I was about 11 years old, and I grabbed a pair of drumsticks and started air drumming to it. I knew from that moment on I wanted to be a drummer! This is my favorite track.
I hate haters. It's one beautiful masterpiece! Hands down! Perhaps, out of ALL godspell numbers delivered, THIS shines above ALL criticism! Come on, THIS sparks life and hope. I first became familiar with Lynne through her role as Grace Keefer on All My Children in the late 1980s. I had no idea she had such an amazing, powerful singing voice. Despite the fact that Godspell is a bit dated now, this video of her performance blows me away! It's also interesting to note that the tambourine playing on this is different than what's on the soundtrack album. Kinda looks like she either actually played it live and it was recorded for the film or someone went thru in foley and carefully redid the playing. You'll note that when she catches it, it's about a 16th note late, and there's a few other hits that are slightly out of time. Not badly, but enough that I noticed it. And on the album, the playing is right on in time and appears in a few different places in the song.

Oh, bless the Lord, my soul
He clothes thee with his love
Upholds thee with his truth
And like an eagle he renews
The vigor of thy youth
Then bless his holy name
Who's grace has made thee whole
Who's love and kindness crowns
Thy days
Oh, bless the Lord, my soul
Oh, bless the Lord, my soul
Oh, bless the Lord
Oh, bless the Lord, my soul
Oh, bless the Lord, my soul
Oh, bless the Lord, my soul
Oh, bless the Lord, my soul
Oh, bless the Lord, my soul
Bless the Lord
Bless the Lord
Bless the Lord
Bless the Lord, my soul
Oh, bless the Lord
Oh, bless the Lord
My soul
Oh, bless the Lord, my soul
Love Lynn

Lynn Thigpin RIP. 😭

Inri Cristo, Superstar ! :P
Man, the catch of the tambourine at 1:04!
I love Godspell!!
