This video inspired me to make my own about my recruitment video! Sorority rush is so different at every school I love learning about how it works at other campuses
Recruitment is so catty and completely stinks for everyone involved. I loved Greek life for the first semester but I’ve seen it’s completely ugly side. In my opinion it’s not worth the INSANE costs, crazy commitment levels, and I hated hearing this at first, but paying for fake friends. Yeah, some people get lucky in that department but you’ll hate sorority at some point... I don’t regret joining, but I wish I would have considered harder if it was right for me really without the super intense pressure by the recruitment process. Just my honest opinion as a sister... I will be taking a semester inactive this fall to really evaluate if it’s right for me. at the end of the day, not everyone is cut out for it, and that’s okay. Don’t let anybody pressure you-remember they need you more than you need them.
I went to UVA for undergrad and while I did not join a sorority while there, I appreciated that they did not let any first years go Greek until the spring. It gave them the fall to focus on academics and join other organizations so they didn’t feel as overwhelmed and left out if they didn’t get into a sorority.
I think it’s important to do your research. There are other councils besides Panhellenic for social sororities: the MGC and NPHC. There are also academic and service Greek life orgs as well. And don’t put orgs into a box: one of Alpha Phi Omega a service fraternity’s tenets is friendship, so they do social programming as well.
hey we have first a weekend with only people that are following the same classes. Than we have one week orientation, you can go to all houses and go to the party's at night. Also you sleep in one of the sorority houses. But we do not make a list of houses. We just pick one, and hope we get in. And when they have chosen to let you rush, then you will have one month you have to prove you really want it. After you survived that you are officially a member.
I would just ask what their philanthropies are straight up. I know when I asked a lot of girls were surprised that I asked and don’t be afraid to ask different girls the same question. Ask them what events they do and how often they do events throughout the week (for yourself and it shows you’re really interested in them). The sisters are probably going to ask you mostly about yourself and you’ll get the same questions over and over again. Also make sure your social media is clean! I know for my sorority we try to find every girl on Facebook/Instagram and we judge you based on your social media (I know it sounds mean, but it’s true). One or two pictures of you at a party is ok, but don’t look like a party animal on social media.
S C do REAL research... don’t just trust what they tell you, for example AXiD and Autism Speaks... otherwise just ask what events they host through the semesters to support the causes, if it’s a chapter or national philanthropy, and how much money you are expected to contribute per year (for example, we were forced to pay $50+ for raffle baskets for my philanthropy event, each semester too)
why do people think they're the shit for being in a sorority? how many sorority and fraternity members are there in the US? currently 750,000 and 9 million alumni
Nice Video ! Love it ❤ but I also have some questions If you dont mind answering . . 1) Are they strict about tattos 2) Is it true they judge you about your size ? I've heard some rumors that they usually pick the more fit people . 3) Is it true they make you do some crazy things for requirements ?
1. Depends on the chapter, 2. Depends on the chapter, 3. Rarely. Hazing is illegal and against the rules of all NPC groups. I wasn't hazed and nobody I know in any other NPC sorority was hazed, either.
It’s perfectly normal to rush when you’re not a freshman. There are girls in my pledge class that were juniors. My school also does recruitment in the spring so that means even less time in the sorority. Just go for it and you’ll find where you belong.
Why are boys and booze off topics? If you're older than 21, (other countries drinking ages vary)... I was always older than my classmates, had a boyfriend and have drinks... there's a huge difference between partying all the time and occasionally!
i'm pretty sure boys and booze are off topics because you aren't there to join a sorority for boys or for booze. the point of a sorority is to join a sisterhood and form a bond with the women based on what you like and your personality; it introduces you to new people you would've never met before and forms friendships you might not have been able to have. in America, the legal drinking age is 21, and the majority of colleges/universities let freshmen and sophomores rush (juniors and seniors are usually out of the picture for it), so no one would be able to legally drink anyways. Because of the ages that rush, talking about booze would be an illegal discussion anyways. I think the boys thing is mainly they don't wanna hear about your boyfriend, he doesn't make you, tell us who YOU are. Someone can correct me if I'm wrong, this is just how I think of it.
@@andreamulato1897 So being both a Junior and taking some time off, don't make the girls less likely to choose you when you're more than a couple years older than them ...
Depends on the campus. In some Greek systems, every chapter has a house and some or all members can live in. In others, the chapters will have a dorm floor/s in university housing, or no chapter-designated housing at all. Even the schools with housed sororities won't always have room for everyone. In virtually all circumstances, new members are not expected to give up their current housing until the following term/the end of their current housing contracts. In situations where there is plenty of room in chapter housing, everyone else is expected to live in. Seniority will determine room assignments and who gets to opt out if all beds are full.
i keep hearing 'don't talk about boys', and it kinda makes me wonder about if there are a lot of lgbt girls in a sorority. like are people okay with that? does it happen a lot?
Hi! One thing I've always wondered about sororities is how recruitment week lines up with your school schedule. I've always been someone who tries not to skip classes, and I'm worried that I would have to during rush. At my university, rush is a full week long, meaning that I would definitely have to skip class at some point or another. When does rush week happen (1st week of school, beginning of semester, etc?) Is there someone I would be able to talk to to be excused on certain days or times?
im not a huge makeup person, but do i need to wear a full face during rush? the most makeup i generally wear is mascara lol. also, our rush is one week, and they give us shirts for all the days except bid day. do i need to wear heels for any of the days?
Alayna Todd when I went through, they tell you which days you dress up. I would say just be yourself. There are plenty of girls in my chapter who don’t usually wear makeup. We don’t pick based on your makeup skills, we base off you. Most days I wore sandals because it consisted of a lot of walking. Later on in the week you get dressier which means dressier clothes and shoes. I hope this helped!
Hi Alayna, I just posted an advice video too if you want to check it out! definitely be yourself first and foremost...but they should provide you with wardrobe guidelines so keep those in mind. Feel free to ask your recruitment counselors for suggestions too!!
I know they gave you a shirt but did they send it to you? Did they just give it to you when you get there? I’m rushing in the fall and I’m trying to see what I need to bring to wear so I’m wanting to see if I should bring a shirt for my casual or if I should bring something that is cute but I could also put the other shirt over if I get it when I get there.
Kaitlyn Bocox usually there is a check in the night before the first round where you meet your recruitment group, get your shirt, and go over rules and schedules for the week
Lexi M at my school the only girls I’ve ever seen not make it are ones with really shitty attitudes! Lol almost everyone will find their forever home if you just trust the process and don’t bad mouth any other houses and stuff like that. Just put your best foot forward and remember that you will end up where you’re meant to be!
I went through rush and ended up suicide bidding on pref night, which means you only want one of the two/three houses you went to. Our system had a malfunction, and since Greek life at my school is small, and I ended up not getting a bid. My school has a rule if you have 2 chapters on pref you will get a bid from one but I didn’t want to pay thousands for a house I didn’t love the girl. So sometimes even if you do want one, there are other factors that go into it!
It depends on your school and how big their Greek life is. A lot of girls drop during recruitment at my school and a decent amount suicide vote on the first or second day (dropping every sorority except one or two). As long as you have a good attitude and show that you’re really interested you should get a bid. I only got invited back to one sorority for the second round which was disheartening, but it was my top so I was also happy. You can always rush again, because sometimes sororities can only take so many girls a semester.
There are people who end up bidless, but the vast majority of rushees will get a bid so long as they prepare efficiently, are friendly and polite during rush parties, and manage their expectations. A good chunk of people drop out of rush when they get cut by their first choice ("popular" houses can't accept everyone, even if they'd like to - there are limits on pledge class and house size), or aren't picked up because they suicide bid on pref day...I'd say the bulk of frustrated rushees fall into these two categories. There are other issues, too: 1. Sophomores and upperclassmen may not be invited back to some chapters, as they have fewer active semesters left to contribute to the orgs, 2. if you go to a really competitive Greek school (example: SEC campuses), you'll need recs from alums in every represented sorority (not those specific chapters, just the organizations) if you want to maximize your invitations back, 3. each NPC organization has set minimum GPA requirements, and if you don't meet them, you will mostly likely not get asked back. Additionally, the chapters want students that will meet or exceed their current chapter average, whatever that may be. While someone may be eligible to rush, that doesn't mean they meet the grade requirements for new members of the orgs they are rushing.
I am from a whole different country and we do not have greek life in our universities so just curious, what happens to those who choose to not go into the whole greek life thing or do not get into a sorority? Do they still live on campus? I really don't know how this works but would love to know. By the way I found this right after watching the movie "Sorority wars".
Those who don't go into greek life are just your basic college life. Sororities/frats are basically like a club but with more responsibilities within the organization. Yes, you still live on campus if you want to :)
Maria Lezama it’s a mutual voting process... so you pick the ones that you like and the sororities are also voting on girls they think will fit best in their sorority! It’s kinda confusing but they go over the whole process during recruitment orientation!
This video inspired me to make my own about my recruitment video! Sorority rush is so different at every school I love learning about how it works at other campuses
This gave me great advice about joining a sorority because I’m planning on join one for college soon and you telling your experience helped.

I was in KKG too!!!!!! I transferred schools however to one that didn’t have kappa so sadly I am no longer in an official chapter:(
Love this vid!! Super informative. Sending adpi love!

What kind of questions could you ask about the philanthropies?? I’m rushing in the fall and I’m soo excited but also super nervous
S C I would ask about what events the sorority does to raise money for their philanthropy and let the convo go from there!
I would just ask what their philanthropies are straight up. I know when I asked a lot of girls were surprised that I asked and don’t be afraid to ask different girls the same question. Ask anything! Be like what events do you do for them or why is this philanthropy special to you or your sisters and etc
Remember to be yourself!!!
Ask what their philanthropy is, they should all know this! Ask what their major fundraiser is for the philanthropy and how they are involved?
S C do REAL research... don’t just trust what they tell you, for example AXiD and Autism Speaks... otherwise just ask what events they host through the semesters to support the causes, if it’s a chapter or national philanthropy, and how much money you are expected to contribute per year (for example, we were forced to pay $50+ for raffle baskets for my philanthropy event, each semester too)
The black dress you wore for pref is so cute! What brand is it?
this is great advice girl!

Do you have any advice for people who are not freshman and want to do recruitment? Did you see anyone or know anyone who was not a freshman?
Diamantis Datil I rushed my sophomore year at ga southern and it was fall 17 and about half of the girls maybe more were not freshman

Go for it! A lot of girls aren’t freshmen. It’s never too late to get the experience.

I’m from the UK where Greek life doesn’t exist at all. Do you actually live in the houses, like does the house become your University accommodation?

I also want to work while I join a sorority but I’m worried it’d be too much of a hassle to keep up with ☹️
I worked while in a sorority, it is totally possible!! I had many sisters who did it as well, you just have to be smart about managing your time!
Totally doable :) I posted an advice video too if you want to check it out! Best of luck with recruitment!!!

You have to pay to be in a sorority??
Yes but you also have to pay to be in clubs and sports. You pay for the house, events, and t shirts and stuff.
