I joined a cultural organization at my college, which is completely different from a sorority, so it's really cool to hear your story and the process you went through. Which cultural org are you a part of? I'm a member of one of the NALFO orgs! I'm glad to see other girls who join multicultural orgs, because I feel like there aren't many videos about multicultural Greeks on YT.

I would!! You don't have to be outgoing to go through rush. There are so many different houses that if you want to be in a sorority there is one for you. Rush really helped me learn how to talk to people and despite being outgoing, I too am pretty shy. The girls are all SO nice and don't make it awkward at all you feel like you have known them forever!

When I decided to make this kind of video too, every time I did a search on youtube it was about the negative aspects of it which does not display it as it is at all! A question is what if you already know what sorority you want to join and should/can you join before school starts like in August or do you join during the week of welcome? Hopefully that makes sense I'm confused on how to you join especially if you already know which one you'd want to be in

Would you still be able to rush even if you were going to be a junior? Like for example if someone went to a junior college prior to transferring to University of Oregon....would they still be able to rush?
Ashley Buford anyone can rush no matter how old you are or what grade you’re in. Definitely more people will be freshmen but it really is available to anyone

I'm in Sigma Mu Omega at UO, it's important to remember there are other options for people who aren't as extroverted but still want to be a member of a sorority, while there are 11 big sororities, we also have a handful of small, local chapters like mine that don't participate in formal recruitment :) Love your videos, I'm a Senior at UO this year and it's honestly so weird seeing my campus on video like this :P

I'm actually a sophomore at a smaller university in Texas, and I've been considering rushing, but I'm honestly scared of not getting a bid/not fitting in. Do you have any advice or thoughts? And also, I've just heard too many horror stories of girls who joined a sorority and ended up failing their classes, but is that more of a personal problem rather than a Greek Life problem? Sorry for the silly questions, but I'd love to hear from you!
Thanks so much for this super sweet comment!! Okay failing from classes is totally a personal issue! It's sad that some girls either just throw all of their values out the window for a party, and how some school's greek life does not promote and atmosphere of support for students who are involved. At my school we pride ourselves on the fact that students in greek life have a higher GPA than those who are not. My house rewards us with better rooms and opportunities based on how many points we get and our GPA. DO NOT WORRY ABOUT NOT GETTING A BID! Go in there and be bold and try something new! If you are just your lovable self people will love you are bring you in! Worst case is that you don't like it or don't get a bid, but you still meet some really cool people! Best of luck! Believe in yourself and just try it you might love it and find your friends for life
i'm looking to rush when i'm in college (still have a few years) but i also want to continue with playing field hockey. can you do both, especially at a d1 school?
sarah hewitt you can for sure do both! It’s less common because your sport takes up so much of your time, but I know girls who do both and make it work 😊
Wow I didn't know you can get denied from a sorority. What do they base it on? GPA, E.C.'s, personality, "fitting in"?

Rush/recruitment is a mutual process - you slowly eliminate houses throughout the different rounds, and in turn, they slowly narrow down the people they want to invite back/take as new members. It's a selective process, but most people end up finding their 'home' at the end of it, even if it isn't the place they thought it'd be at the start.

I am so excited to be coming to the University of Oregon next fall!! I am all the way from Illinois, I am very excited to be going to the University of Oregon!! I will be a sophomore but I want to rush, is it harder to get a bid if you are older? Also Love your videos, I just recently found you and I am obsessed!!

2. This video made me really want to rush, but I do have a few questions. How bad is the financial commitment for rushing and being in a sorority? And how is the time commitment? Do they require you to miss class for chapter meetings and parties? And is it possible to not get into a house at all?

Thanks for your super sweet comment! The financial commitment is hard the first year as it is most expensive, but I personally think it is worth it and the are scholarships available for it. The time commitment is large too if you want to be involved, you can kinda choose your involvement and I am crazy busy with tons of activities and I still managed to get all of my requirements done, get good grades, and have time to watching netflix lol. They never require you to miss class for chapter or events, you send in your excuse and even when I had to take a make up test during chapter they are totally fine with it! My sorority is all about school first! It is possible to not get into a house at all but it is so so rare (probably the only case would be if you had TERRIBLE grades and were not involved or showed no interest during rush)! I don't know of any of my friends or anyone in my group who did not get a bid, some people are unhappy because they don't get into their "top and only perfect house" and choose to drop out even though other houses still wanted them! If you have any other questions let me know I hope that helped!

How much does it cost? If you are accepted into a house, I know there is a cost per semester, but if you live in your sorority house, do you also have to pay the housing cost from the university as if you were living in a dorm?
no you just pay for living in your sorority house and it's different for every house!

Hi! I'm heading to UO next fall and I'm really excited to rush! I was wondering if you had to take a guess, how many girls would you say go through recruitment and how many don't get a bid back to any house? Also, does each house have the same amount of members or are some bigger than others?
That's so awesome!! So from what I remember close to a thousand girls go through rush and around 700 get a bid and go to a house, mainly because many girls are picky about which house they get into and they just drop out because they don't get the one house they want. Each house does have around the same number of members too! Hope that helped and best of luck this fall!
Looks like fun! I've been considering joining a sorority, but am unsure due to the fact that I am really not a big party person.
OMG that was my BIGGEST fear before joining a sorority! I don't party at all and was so so scared that I would feel the need to or be forced to but I am so glad to say that is not the case! I have met many girls in my house to feel the same way I do about partying and although I go out, I chose not to participate in the drinking at the parties. If you want to join a house do it! Stay true to yourself and your values and I promise other girls will respect you for that!

Hey!!! This just got me so pumped and I plan on attending U of O this fall
So glad it helped you out! Honestly I would just watch a ton of rush outfit videos online! But remember that the schools in the south were a lot of southern prints and really at the end of the day it's important to wear what makes you feel confident!
I signed up for recruitment this year 2017 my first year at UO and I don't really understand please help, when you showed the formal recruitment pamphlet with the costs what costs do you mean like do we have to pay to live in the houses if so is it more or less expensive than on campus housing and what are some of the other costs?
Yes you have to pay to live in the houses and you have to pay dues every term of the school year! It is actually cheaper to live in the sorority house than it is to live in the dorms, but it is cheaper to live an off campus house with roommates than it is to live in the sorority! As for other costs: like shirts you need to buy for philanthropy events, outfits for recruitment, ect. Hope that cleared things up! Let me know if you have any other questions :)

This is such a great video, thank you! I'm starting at UO this Spring, but I'm planing to wait until Fall to rush. Can I ask you honestly (for your house or others), is 22 too old to rush? I took time off from school and I'll be a junior, but I don't really "feel" older than typical college age girls. I know my big would probably be younger than me, but that doesn't really bother me since I have plenty of friends who are 19/20. I'd appreciate an honest answer since I don't want to go through the whole rush experience if my age or class standing is going to be a red flag.
I know at my school, age isn't a big deal, I can't speak for other schools though. One of my best friends my freshman year rushed Sigma Kappa sorority and she was 22 when she got in and 24 when she graduated. They picked her because she would still be there for a couple years. Same with my twin (my fraternity sister with the same big as me), she was 22 with a baby when she joined. I think usually the only time age becomes an issue is if you're going to graduate the same year you join.

I really don't remember a lot of girls getting dropped, it was more like a ton of girls dropped out bc they only wanted to be in one house! I am sure you will get in a house if you want too :)

YES!! My suite mate was iffy about it , did it, and LOVES being in a sorority! You always have the option to drop out so why not try!

I would say that generally girls wore solid colors for pref night and wore patterned dresses for sisterhood day which is more casual! Let me know if you have any other questions:)

Kendall Waldrop great question!! Houses usually have a limit to how many girls they can accept but it usually ranges from about 50-65 girls per house 😊

Up to you! Most people rush freshman you but plenty rush sophomore year too!! I think a lot if girls enjoy rushing as freshman to feel apart of something their first year :)

Fraternity rush is different than sorority rush so yes I believe that does happen here :)

You join a sorority like a club so it's optional :)
It's a selective process, especially at some of the bigger southern schools (think UGA/Ole Miss etc.). Some people do not get to be in a sorority, but the vast majority do, espeically if they keep their minds open to all of the hosues.

Did you have any problems with hazing?
No not at all! There is a zero tolerance policy for hazing and especially for sororities that is EXTREMELY serious so no there is no hazing :)
Is Greek life big at UO?
Hi! Is UO in city or near the airport? I haven’t ever been to Oregon and I want to know!
UO is right in the Heart of Eugene! About 30 minutes from the airport depending on traffic.
I cried on my pref night too! I fell in love with Chi Omega 💞

What is probably the average amount of membership in a sorority?
It's deferent at every school! My sorority has around 200 girl total in it :)
There is a possibility that even going through all this you might not get into a house right?
There is a possibly that that might occur! But if you are open to all the houses that are all great that likely wont happen!
Do all girls get excepted into a sorority?
Most girls do, it may not be the one that was on the top of your list, but there are many opportunities to get into a house :)

What is rush????? and what is big/little? Are you saying prep night or pref night? And what is that? Im so confused, why is there so many "parties"? I dont know a single thing about sororities. Ive always wanted to go to college and live in a dorm or be in a sorority but my family could never afford it and i didnt get awarded any of the scholarships i applied for. I wasnt good at school either and i never felt like i was good enough to even be able to go to school. Ive always wanted to though but now im pregnant and married and barely making ends meet and it just doesnt seem possible anymore.
But i do love your videos. Makes me wish i could go back in time and retry at high school and scholarships.

Yes most houses on my campus have a live in requirement!!
