Why Do Lego Servo Motors Glitch? And How to Fix Them

- If you ever have a Lego servo motor that is not working correctly try this method to repair it.
If that doesn't work here is a copy of a Lego servo. It's nonproprtional but It's less than $15. amzn.to/3p3NHnk
Here is a $100 (Yes one hundred dollar )Lego servo. I guess they are getting rare. amzn.to/3yODkbH
i had the exact problem where my servo kept jittering very badly and i spent so much time trying to figure out why it was jittering and wouldent work properly. it turns out that all i had to do was pull the contacts outwards because the metal contacts on the front grey part werent properly touching the metal contacts on the circuit boards. it wouldent return to center and the motor had no clue in relation to what position the orange part was so hence the terrible jittering. well i saved my motor and having to pay crazy prices for servos. if you are having this problem then try what i did. hope this helps! 🙂
Its not suprising that you have taken a unique video for lego lovers again. Thank you very much
I have a good one coming - Max Power with relays
Some electrolytic grease might be good too. It used to be used in auto ignitions to reduce oxidation on electrical contacts.
This is a Copy Lego Servo. (it had been opened before making it easier. Official Lego stuff is hard to open). Only do this with nonworking servos. You may damage the case when opening. This fix applies to anything that has moving contacts, they oxidize.
Keep in mind that Lego's Power Functions Patents have expired. They no longer manufacture PF.
You don't know how helpful this was thanksss
I hope you get your servo working. Thanks for watching.
Thanks so much, fixed my Lego servo motor! Just really hard to take it apart but it was worth it :)
glad I could help!
howe did you take it a
part ?
@@nauthriz833 he shows you in the vid
Thank you
When i was fixing my original pf xl motor i had to damage a lot of the casing clips for me to open it. The pf servo has 2x times the clips and they are so small. I tried to just open it. No chance. The worst thing is that only the wire inside the cable is damaged.
You could destroy the clips and use glue to hold it together. Also, some screwdriver sets have a bit that is a flat driver but it is split in the middle. you can depress both tabs at the same time with it. makes it a lot easier.
looks like this servo has wiper contacts that only allow setting the position to -90, 0, and +90 degrees, and nothing in between.
i have one that looks the same, and the in-between positions cause it to twitch like crazy. are you using a remote that only makes the servo go to these positions?
The Lego IR controller will only send an on/off signal. I think I was using that. The servo does act weird with proportional control.
Super cheap copy servo nonproportional but less than $15.amzn.to/3p3NHnk
Are any other easier ways to get it open because I found difficulties to use the method on the video.
It is really hard to do. It took lots of practice, old servos, and many shots to make it look easy. If you can get help and push on both tabs it might be easier. Use a fine edge to pry open while pushing down the pins, work on both sides of the servo.
Im having a hard time trying to remove it
I have an unofficial servo and I'm having a hard time opening it but I can tape it later if it destroys the pin things, I'll edit this if it works
11 months
no edit
RIP unofficial servo
the inside of your servo motor looks different than my one. And I did bought it from official lego shop
There are several models of this servo I think mine is unofficial. The contacts work on the same principle and may have the same oxidation problem.
Cleaning the contacts and brushes is the easiest thing you can do to try to fix a bad Lego servo or controller. Good Luck!
@@MaxBrix i have learned to fix the servo with a knife or any object like that. Just clean the gaps between the contacts and the contacts themselves and the servo will be like new. the problem is that I have to clean it almost every month.
@@Michalloyd_stop-motion If you electroplate the contacts in gold they will last a lot longer.
@@Michalloyd_stop-motion $15 Copy Lego Servo (Nonproportional). amzn.to/3wJeKHf
so when my cable bends a certain way it just stops working, or just out of nowhere my servo will either glitch or will only turn one way. i also cannot pop open the pins. help plz
Sounds like a loose connection. I found a tool with 2 teeth like a flat screw driver that is cut in the center It works great, it came in an electronics screw driver set.
The mouldkings come put of the box with these problems.
I have different problem, with "train" controller. it doesn't reacts for single move of control "wheel", only after about 8 or more click it moves to end position, after we move a wheel in oposite direction, same thing: after 8 or more clicks it moves to oposite. any ideas? this is servo or controler failure?
Does it have one yellow dial?
Ok, It looks like every lego controller works with a similar methodology as what you see here with these contacts. I believe you are having a similar problem. Clean off the contacts and there might be a metal brush that you can gently bend it toward the circuit board.
What is here shown, is not a original LEGO servo. A copy of it has exact the behaviour you described.
These servos have 3 stable states only, full-right - mid - full-left.
This is neither a controler failure nor a servo fail itself. The Servo is not exactly the same like the original.
How did you get it apart? I cant
Some models can be very difficult. Use a good hard screwdriver with a good grip that fits the tab. press the tab firmly down then push it forward by tilting the driver back. Sometimes I have to pry the gearbox off of the motor while pressing down the tabs. If the servo is unusable apply force and hope for the best. I have fixed some motors and servos others end up being scrapped for power cords and motors. The ones that did not get fixed were broken anyway and I learned by trying. Good luck!
It took a few tries to make it look easy!
My unofficial servo motor kind of rattles left and right really quickly and stops. I don’t think doing this might be worth it cuz I could break it.
This is mostly something to try before throwing it in the trash.
The pin things are pretty much destroyed but it actually works :)
Excellent!
My servo doesn't go on its original position when i release the controller button, what could be the problem? Thanks 👍
I would think this is the problem. The servo reads the resistance on different contacts. one of the contacts has oxidation causing it to read the neutral position resistance. Good luck. I mostly use Geek servo and a hobby radio these days: www.ebay.com/itm/233780774757?hash=item366e6b8765:g:ETsAAOSwMDJgPFZZ
Thanks you for the information!😊
@@MaxBrix how does it connect to the battery box? The connection looks a little different. Haha sorry im just new to power function 😅
@@jacobsphotography7511 Well it might take some learning about hobby radios and LIPO batteries. This video will show you what I mean ruclips.net/video/pD21LAk_tTk/видео.html
Thanks!
Mine just does not want to pop open i had to use a hammer to open it. I completely destroyed it
I did not realize Lego could destroy hammers!
when your book back those days are you talking about the racing cars only racetrack
Slot cars like scalectric.
What is that for a platine with a LED ?
?? I don't understand the question. sorry.
@@MaxBrix sry 2:00 to what you are connecting the motor (of course you are just connecting to the power in, anyway this is intresting)
Oh, That is a hacked up Lego IR receiver!
@@MaxBrix ah ok, thx
This looks like an lepin sevro. I have a problem with that and also lego sevros. Lego is way too hard and I almost damaged the casing of it
This is a Chinese servo. You probably wouldn't approve of my possessions either. I'm kinda impoverished(I am repairing a $15 servo).
One should only do this with a nonfunctional servo. Then if it is damaged in the process you don't loose anything. I hope you got your servo working!
@@MaxBrix Na the internals didn't. So LEGO servos costing over 100 is not the best choice. I almost broke the casing while opening it.
My servo still isn’t returning to centre
:(
Wow, 4 tha WIN
My servo is working again but its not returning to center
I wish I could give half a heart.
idk try pulling the metal contacts outwards on the grey front part of the servo and make sure they touch the circuit board so it has a connection. i fixed mine like this so try it.
After reassembling and disassemble countless times. My servo still won't recenter, even after adjusting the gear. Is there another way to solve it.
is it trying to center but going to the wrong position?
@@MaxBrix yes
@@zaikaicheng1782 It is hard to say without seeing it. it does seem that it would be the metal bit on the orange gear is making the wrong contact. If it is touching the right pads it should stop moving. I would try running it disassembled manually making connections to the electrical contacts to figure out what is wrong.
How the hell i open the servo? Im hurting my hands!
It is actually really hard. It helps if you have three hands. With one hand hold the servo. With the other jam a screw driver into the connector tab hole. With the other hand use another screw driver to pry the case apart while pressing down on both connector tabs and pulling the servo apart. You might damage the connector tabs but that is ok.
Thanks. Will try tomorrow. 😓
MaxBrix i succeded opening the case. The inner motor itself works. The circuits seen clear. Just a little of black grass. I cleaned all but when i assemble, the servo do the same. Any tip? Thanks!
