Ah yes. Here again is FO4 not having the balls to actualy cut you out of certain ways to play, even if you keep talking smack to the faction members and standing against everything they want...
Bethesda writing at its worst. Instead of immediately shooting you, he talks and talks and even keeps obeying orders even though you clearly joined a group he despise! It's as if in Fallout: New Vegas the NCR would happily work with you even though you massacred their men by order of Caesar just 30 minutes before.
The Minutemen had such great inspiration and then Bethesda just makes them one guy who makes the player do everything and then Preston acts like there is some faction of Minutemen changing the world.
The Sole Survivor burned Preston, first with threats and then with searing lasers. Preston fell, covered in blood, betrayed by his very General. His dreams dashed, life’s work a mockery. He couldn’t look at his General, now enemy and soon to be killer. Instead, he gazed at the sky.
Everything going on in this scene is just so quintessential Fallout 4 lol, the goofy outfits, the old time music, the deafening generator, all together with the serious relationship altering conversation juxtaposed immediately after by the clipping audio of generic radiant quest completion banter
Imagine if instead of this, once you sided with the raiders Preston told you off, and left the settlement. Soon, you'd get notifications that the minute men, are trying to reclaim/take over your raider settlements, and soon there is a sidequest to eventually kill Preston.
The whole “Minutemen are the failsafe” isn’t the only reason the game forces you into them. It’s because Bethesda forced this settlement system into an RPG, and so much of it hangs on what you do with the Minutemen. The BoS hardly does anything with settlements. The Institute doesn’t do a damn thing, and neither does the Railroad. What they should have done is implement the raider system into the main game from the start, rather than forcing it on you in a DLC that many would have started after being mostly done with the game.
If this was Fallout NV there would be a straight up war after that dialogue.
For someone who's supposed to be your subordinate, Preston sure does order you around a lot.

"You've crossed the line general! here I'll mark it on your map"

"I'll let you know if there are any settlements that need your help". I'm sure you will Garvey, I'm sure you will...
He just doesn't understand that you're trying to pull a Palpatine to unify the Commonwealth
YOU WERE MEANT TO BE THE CHOSEN ONE, YOU WERE SUPPOSED TO HELP THE SETTLEMENTS I MARKED ON YOUR MAP, NOT LEAVE THEM IN DARKNESS!
So uh.... How's your computer? cause I think it started melting half way through recording this.

"you've crossed the line, general. there's something I can't forgive"
Preston: I’ll follow your orders as a loyal Minuteman, but our friendship is over! 😡
"I hate you."

"At least it's not raining."
