Well its Season 1 New Series to be more specific , Original series runned from 1963 - 1989 and if u add New series and its seasons you will get 61 years on AIR well minus 10 because it finished 1989 and started again 2001 . Imagine to create a show that runs for 50 years and have ideas for new episodes to keep audience captivated

I'm so glad you're loving Eccleston after seeing Tennant. Most people rank Tennant higher and he is freaking amazing, but I always put Eccleston at the top. I loved him, and if he hadn't kicked off the reboot with such charm, intensity and talent there would be no more Doctors. Bringing the show back was a gamble, and I truly believe it was Eccleston and Billie Piper who made fans fall in love with it. I know it did for me! There is so much more to come -- I know you'll have fun!!!

Doctor who had been off the air for 16 years wen this first aired (apart from the failed tv movie with a great new doctor) and it wasn't until the trailer with the doctor yelling (edited for spoilers) that we knew this was a revival not reboot. RTD did a great job of mixing his own plot breadcrumbs with bits of old show lore to introduce the character to a new audience and keep us old timers mostly on board

i will tell you by experience. i have met people who started with The Christmas Invasion (S2E1) or The Eleventh Hour (S5E1) or further, or even with the new 3 part spacial and they told me that they almost wish they started with S1. also, i've met people who started in S2 because they wanted David Tennant, and they lost so many good episodes and some lore arcs too, so don't think about David and just enjoy Eccleston for the FANTASTIC doctor that he was.
also, quick tip to enjoy it more, don't spend too much time making comparisons to the specials you started with, because that takes away a lot of fun from what you're watching. yes, the CGI and budget were only so much, but the show in this form was personally my favourite, even over the new 3 specials
    that being said.
have a good time... do that for me, Chachi... have a fantastic time...

The John F. Kennedy scene with the Ninth Doctor being present was a reference as the very first episode of Classic Who "An Unearthly Child" which stars William Hartnell as the First Doctor was broadcast on 23 November 1963 a night just after John F. Kennedy was assinated as at that time shocked the world and no one was tuning in that night so they had to repeat it a week later to get viewers watching.

I loved your responses to Good Omens and am following along on Dr. Who. I think Christopher Eccleston made a great doctor. The issues with his leaving sound like all sorts of bad behind the scenes stuff. The descriptions coming out now (hushed up then) indicate a toxic work environment that was just full of sexual harassment of women. He objected, nothing was done, and when he left the BBC said stuff about his reasons for leaving that were not true and not approved by him. The BBC put out at one point that it was because he couldn't handle the production schedule and essentially blacklisted him. He is still mad about his treatment then. Meanwhile Eccleston was voted most popular actor at the 2005 National Television Awards for his Dr. Who role. The problems had nothing to do with his acting. I am grateful that he did not try to take down the whole show at the time. Showed some class on his part, not so much on the part of the executives.

@@HuntingViolets There was some debate over if they should continue the Classic timeline or reboot the show with a brand new 1st Doctor. So, they hedged their bets and made both possible for the new show. There are no references to the 8 Doctors before 9 in series 1. Clive only shows pictures of 9 but says "this is your Doctor". Had they been more firm on this being a continuation they probably would have introduced the other regens here and told us this was a new incarnation.
      Spoilers......
The other thing is that until 2013 the 9th was the War Doctor. The Day of the Doctor was conceived with CE returning to the role. He can't have just regened if he was the one who did everything in the war. Checking himself out in the mirror seems a really odd choice in retrospect as it appears to have been just an easter egg for older fans to say maybe he's the same Doctor if they went the full reboot path.

Been waiting for you to formally dive into the Whoniverse! On behalf of the Whovians, welcome to the Doctor Who Universe! 💙
You will LOVE Nine and Rose Tyler🌹💙
Q: Have you seen the Series 14 trailer?
    Trivia time:
Doctor Who started in 1963 with William Hartnell, and his first three companions Susan, Ian, and Barbara.
Then came the next six Doctors and many many companions.
After the Seventh Doctor's last episode, the show was on hiatus since 1989, and it produced a TV movie in 1996 with Paul McGann as the Eighth Doctor.
The show produced audio dramas since then, and it officially came back in 2005 with the episode you saw now.
The mannequins are Autons, a Classic enemy from the 1970s.
    Mickey Smith is Rose's boyfriend.
The TARDIS has had different interiors since 1963. The one you saw is the 2005-2010 interior. There will be more to come...

  • @MrEvers
    @MrEvers 7 месяцев назад +5

The first episode of Doctor who was aired on the same day that Kennedy was assassinated (23rd of November 1963), thus the little nod that the Doctor was there.
The original run ("classic Who") lasted until 1989, when it was cancelled. There was a TV-movie in 1996, that was meant as a pilot, but it didn't catch on and it took another 9 years before we got a new show in 2005 ("new Who").
The villains in this episode (The Nestene) were a monster from classic Who, but the war that's being referenced is a new Who concept that will be explored more.

It wasn't so much that the production was too much for Eccelston. It was more that the first season was kind of a nightmare shoot. So many things went wrong. And his relationship with the showrunner and producers broke down. There is a lot to it unfortunately. In any case, he was still incredible in the role. An absolute pro.

The nestene consciousness and plastic dummies is also a call back to Classic Who where they first appeared in the first of the third Doctor's adventures ( Jon Pertwee ) in 1970. That episode "Spearhead from Space" was also the first Doctor Who episode to be broadcast in colour.
Not being able to save their planet though wasn't a callback as that happened in the Time War which is something which Russell T Davies invented for the revived series. The Time war supposedly happened during the period between when the classic series ended and this revived series started. So at the start of this series both those familiar with the classic series and those new to Doctor Who were all learning about the Time war for the first time.

  • @Lenkic13

UK watcher here. Just came across your channel and saw that you’re started to react to Doctor Who, so I’ve immediately subscribed to follow you on your Whovian journey. I think you’re gonna love it. They’ll be lots of stories that will make you laugh and cry in equal measure, whilst others will surprise you in their concepts and imagination. Can’t wait to see your reactions to them. I started watching the original series in 1970 when I was 6, and my Doctor then (and still my favourite today) was the 3rd Doctor!
Fun fact 1 - The 3rd Doctor’s first story introduced the Nestene Consciousness (who invaded Earth by controlling all of the world’s plastic) and when Doctor Who came back in 2005 with this episode, writer and show runner Russell T. Davies brought these same villains back to face the 9th Doctor. The scene where the plastic dummies smashed their way out of the store windows was originally done in that first 3rd Doctor story, the only difference being that back in 1970, they couldn’t show the dummies smashing through the windows due to budget reasons.
Fun fact 2 - There’s a little in joke when Clive shows Rose the photo of the Doctor standing in the crowd at Kennedy’s assassination. The assassination took place on Friday, 22nd November 1963, and the following day, the 23rd, was the day the very first episode of Doctor Who aired in the UK. Because of the media coverage of Kennedy’s assassination that weekend, the BBC were worried that viewers might not have tuned in to watch that first episode, thus potentially hurting its ratings, so they took the unprecedented step of repeating episode one again, the following Saturday, before episode 2 aired.

The show was off the air for 16 years before this, apart from a one-off TV movie. A lot of time (way more than 16 years!) has passed for the Doctor as well, so some of the things he mentions happened in between what was shown and were a mystery to fans at the time.
The Nestene conciousness is indeed a villain from the original run. You will see more of them as the show goes on.
Donna had subconcious memories from the Doctor which were shared with her daughter Rose. She took her name from them as well as inspiration for the plushies she was making.
Mickey is Rose's bf, but they seemingly are together more out of habit than true love.

Oh, another enjoyable reactor getting into Doctor Who! So I’m sure you’ve seen all sorts of opinions but here is my ranking of modern doctors, just so you have another perspective:
    Capaldi (12th)
    Smith (11th)
    Tennant & Eccleston (10th & 9th)
    Gatwa (15th)
Whitaker (13th) (unfortunately I think she was really done wrong by bad showrunning/writing, I really liked her)
    Tennant (14th)
Not sure where to put the Other One(s?) who you will learns about later.
There isn’t a Doctor I don’t love, mind you. But there are definitely stories I’m not in love with.
So many good times ahead! I’m jealous of you: I really wish I could watch all of this again for the first time. And I will definitely be going to check out your Good Omens reactions, Tennant and Sheen are magical in that. Gaiman’s work is perfect, even if he, apparently, is starting to look like another garbage human. He also wrote for Doctor Who (one of my favorite episodes).
There are great times to be had with best doctors lists, best companions lists (Bill and 11’s first two companions are objectively the best, obviously), villains lists (12’s variant of a master villain is maybe the best in television. Ever.)
But you really need to pick up the pace with these…pretty please.

Rose is quite the companion. Some of the companions are great, some not so much, but Rose is one of the great ones. I think my favours are Rose from the new series and Sarah Jane Smith and Ace from the classic series.
The BBC decided back in 1989 to end the show - lots of versions of why but it seems mostly some of the top execs back then didn't understand the show and thought it was stupid so they killed it. They said the viewing numbers were down, but others have shown that while it was in a bit of a slump, it was still beating several other shows. Anyway, fan letters never stopped coming and demanding they bring it back, so in the end they did in 2005 - so a 15 year break. To explain the break in the series, they created The Time War between the Time Lords and the Daleks - the Doctor was believed to be the only survivor from those two races and a lot of other races suffered greatly as well, which is what was referenced in this episode.
Also, little note, from the very start of Dr Who back in 1963, there has always been a bit of a battle between the fans and people actually producing the show on the one side and BBC executives on the other side. The show never fit the BBC view of how a show should be and while some of the executives thought it was wonderful and daring and saw the strong fan base, others felt it was an affront to the BBC and should be killed - but they couldn't get around the popularity. So every time the numbers dropped off a bit, there would be rumbles of cancelling it.
Suits vs Artists - the classic struggle. BTW - my favorite Doctor was the 4th, Tom Baker, though I gather he was not so nice in real life - never mix the human who plays the role with the character who is the role. My second favorite was the 10th, David Tennant, with the 11th, Matt Smith, a close runner up. So you will be getting 2 of my top 3 doctors. I was actually not to find of the 1st doctor, but I loved the stories so I put up with William Hartnell.

The original run of Doctor Who ended in 1989, there was a TV movie in 96, but other than that there were no televised stories for 16 years.
In the show’s absence we got a deluge of books, audio dramas, and fan films both with the actors from the show or with said fans playing original Doctors and companions, at the same time there were also a handful of ‘animated’ webcasted audio plays Death Comes to Time with the Seventh Doctor Sylvester McCoy in 2001, followed by Real Time with the Sixth Doctor in 2002, and Shada with the Eighth Doctor Paul McGann instead of Tom Baker the Fourth Doctor in 2003.
There was also Scream of the Shalka with Richard E Grant as the Ninth Doctor from 2003, plus two Children in Need stories, the first being a nonsensical crossover between EastEnders and Doctor Who known as Dimensions in Time (the 30th anniversary special from 1993,) and the other being the Curse of Fatal Death with Rowan Atkinson as the 9th Doctor, written by future show-runner Steven Moffat, which aired in 1999.

With regards to the name Rose being shared by two characters, in the briefest way possible to avoid any spoilers of things you haven’t seen yet, Rose Noble named herself after Rose Tyler after coming out as trans, because through Donna part of the Doctor and their memory of Rose Tyler lingered.
IRL it’s because Season 1 and the 2023 specials were produced by Russel T Davies, he created both Roses and named the 2023 one after the 2005 one likely because of nostalgia and how much he likes the character of Rose Tyler who he created.

The doctor being at JFK's assassination is a nod to the fact that the very first episode of Doctor Who aired the day after the assassination and got few viewers because of that. Fortunately the producers were able to persuade the BBC to reshow the episode before the second episode aired - otherwise Doctor Who might well have died before it had really started.

Nope I'm afraid we don't see Clive again he's as dead as a do-do.
The war the Doctor mentions you'll find out in due course throughtout the series.
The mannequins are called the "Autons" which are villains from Classic Who which first appeared since 1970 in The Third Doctor (Jon Pertwee's) first episode.
Classic Who ran from 1963 to 1989 it had a 26 year run before it's untimely cancellation as at the time Michael Grade an ex BBC employee deemed science fiction old hat and wanted to get rid of it fans continued to fight to keep the show going.
Then there was the 1996 TV movie which starred Paul McGann as The Eighth Doctor which was an unsuccessful attempt to bring the show back to draw at a high to an american audience but it did well in the UK but it flopped in the USA which to which sadly McGann never got his own series and we never have a regeneration scene of Paul McGann regenerating into Christopher Eccleston.
Then the show came back in 2005 ran by just the BBC on a low CGI budget until 2022 after the Jodie Whittaker era had ended then was taken over by Disney ever since then.

Donna didn't name her daughter, Donna's daughter named herself as she transitioned!
And remember, the metacrisis thing that made them fear Donna would die if she remembered the Doctor?
It got split between Donna and her daughter even before she was born. In 'The Star Beast' when they explained Donna's re-activation as The Doctor-Donna how Rose got caught up in it: "Binary. "Non-Binary" "Binary." "Non-Binary."
It made her able to help and split the metacrisis (all of the doctor's mind and memories) BETWEEN Donna... and the daughter who named herself Rose.
Sorry if that's a little over-explainy! I've been watching since this episode first came out in 2005 and the history and lore of I find fascinating. I'm definitely one of those who watches the PERSON watching something I love for the first time, excited to see their reaction!

Mickey might not be gay, but there's a plenty of LGBTQ+ representation in the show to look forward to.
Aside from a TV movie in 1996, Doctor Who was off air from 1989 through 2005. The TV movie was an attempt to relaunch the show with American money but it failed miserably. The BBC had pretty much lost confidence in the show until Russel T Davies showcased his ideas on how to bring it back, and the BBC decided to let him run with it.
